A All advertisements appear in both papers, ana are inserted at the usual rates._ PHYSIOGNOMIES AT PARIS. Bt an Amateur. A gaming house, vulgarly called by another name, was my elysium-not from a love of play, but from the luxury of watching the play of phy siognomies. Like Van Scalpel, I rioted in wit nessing the cuttings-up perpetrated in those dens of moral slaughter. I am not unvocation ally cruel, by any means, but the swift muta tions of the table, and the consequent mutilations of the purse, furnished me with food for pow der by calling up continual myriads of menta spirits, fiendish and foul, from the ‘vasty deep of that Proteus abyss—the human heart. hat exquisite variations of passion were offered to mv favorite studv at every turn of the card and throw of the die! What a delightful choice of aeooiea had 1 lo cull from, during the progress of mv truly philantrophic pursuit in dissecting the miseries of the few Tor the advantage of the many! The gamester! care sits on his ha2gard brow, And horrid thought; uiethinks I see him now. Suspense and frenzy rolling in his eye, With trembling hand he throw’s the varient die; Wife, child, fame, fortune, hang upon the cast. He loses; keen repentance comes at last, Too late; its rending pangs he cannot bear; He dies!—a self destroyer in despair!” From the gaming-house to the morgue it is but a single stop. Alas poor L-g-y! in the year ISIS he stept out of a three pair-u-stairs window; I saw him lying dead at the Morgue, extended on the damp cold stone, where many a similar victim of the demon-vice had been ex hibited before him. In less than five years he had lost a fortune of twenty thousand pounds, crushed the heart of his young and fair wife, and stoop'd to borrow of his former menials, for the sake of indulging his incurable propen sity for play. When he first came to Paris he possessed one of the noblest physiognomies, I had ever analysed; but months before his sui cide it was impossible to look upon his altered traits without disgust, shuddering and fear.— What a host of victims passed before my pro fessional eyes during the period 1 walked those hospitals, or rather those malisions of madmen, and incurables! I only recollect a sin gle instance among my countrymen, at least of one who had resolution enough to withdraw himself at the “eleventh hour,” with the re maining fourth of his fortune in his pocket; and he «as a gallant officer with a wooden leg He had entered the notorious Golgotha, a place of skulls, ycelpt Frascati, with a full and fell determination to recover all or lose all. His whole pecuniary resources were desperately staked on a single chance; in turning the cards the odds were a hundred to one against him; till, at length, the very last card of the 0PP°s'te column produced an equal number, by uhich he neither lost or won. I o snatch up his money from the fatal table—to rush out of the infa mous den—and from thence to the letiremcnt of his own room, was but the afFair of a mo ment. He there took a solemn oath never again to display his physiognomy in a mnison de jeu: he kept his word and money too. There is still vegetating here the shadow ol an Englishman, who once was the pride of the Rue de la f aix, and is now confined in a sort of madhouse near Paris, from the effects of rouge et noir; I under stand that his only amusement is still pricking on paper ideal martingales. Who’s e’re been at Paris but must needs” have heard of S-—. Within the last eighteen years lie has paid a booty to all the tables to the amount of five hun dred thousand pound sterling, eithical reader: and though they have played booty with him to such a prodigious amount, his propensical phy sioirnomy is spldom abspnt from tht? invprtt*d Waterloo of his wealth— Fraaatic, insatiable whirlpool still sucks in a pretty considerable portion” of his little annuity of fifteen hundred francs or teupennies, per annum. It is painful to see that tall venerable form, courbed almost double, less by age than by the deteriorating re sults Ol FLAY. _ I might prolong the nrst to a paimui exurm. D i-s, the son of a baronet the gentleman par excellence, an officer of the King of England’s palace, with a fortune of forty thousand pounds sterling, became a punter at rouge et noir, to which destructive infatuation he first lost his property, then surreptitiously sold the entire pe cuniary resources of his aged mother and his sister; afterwards committed a forgery on a London banker, and only escaped from prison and an ignominious death by a successful and expensive stratagem, to further which his injui ed relations, stripped themselves bare of every thins?. He is now a common porter in Ameri ca, H-a-l-n. the once rich and prosperous print er, of U-, who, proscribed as an outlaw bankrupt, fled to Paris, with his amiable wife and interesting family. H-'s father-in-law, the celebrated engraver, H-, allowed the ex iles a sufficient income to live respectably, but such was the frenzy of H-a-l-n for the gaming table, that he was miserable, when on festival days the houses were shut up, of the hours of play contractad. After having abused the con fidence of the venerable Madame la Raronne de R-, for a good round sum, and raising the wind from petty tradesmen, and all within gripe, he took French leave, and is still living, or ra ther starving in America. The reverend au thor of Lacon’s eccentric and gaming habits are well known; and though he was lucky in regard to winning, yet his impure gains led to ruin and suicide. 1 shall only refer to his com portment in Paris. Colton arrived in this coun try from the United States, whither he had se cretly fled to “hide his diminished head'’ from the pursuits of his creditors. His habits were of the most eccentrically irregular order; now he practised as a horse-dealer, then figured as a wine merchant; then, again, as a picture-dealer, in which last commerce, he shipwrecked nearly all his hoarded gains. Gifted with a wonderful memory—always ready with an apt and ample store of anecdotes—full of classical and poeti cal talent, bis supreme delight was to shine king of low company; avaricious, and distrustful of every body, he was often the dupe of his thirst of making money by loans to needy persons, either on effects or valueless bills at an immense interest. Feeling himself fallen from his high esteem” in public opinion, he too frequently had recourse to acts unw*orthy of his former station In life, and his profession. The gaming-tables were his daily haunts. And fortune seemed mi raculously to favor him, as an exception to th Paris, Nov m Hon. II. For you, we felt n0 15 sonal devotion. We come not to fawn aron s you as th£ base parasites of power. For v public services we entertain a grateful recoil? tion. There is nothing next to an approving cnn. science) which so encourages a man amid the arduous duties and toils of official station as the applauding voice of his fellow citizens. Bt this known principle of our nation, we are guid ed, when we invite you to partake of a dinner to be prepared at Capt. II. Bridges’ Hotel in this place, at such time as may suit your conve nience. Gentlemen:—I have duly received youroblig. ing letter, dated yesterday, inviting me to a pub lie dinner, at Capt. II. Bridges’ Hotel, in Paris, on my way to the eastward. It is true that 1 shall pass through Paris in a day or two, and no where could I enjoy more satisfaction atsucha festival, for no where shall I find better friend* or better principles; but. gentlemen, as my tar ry in Paris will be short, and I am anxious to avail myself of the Indian summer, now pre vailing, to prosecute the long journey before me, 1 hope you will attribute to the right motive* the necessity I feel myself under of declining the acceptance of your invitation. I concur entirely with you, gentlemen, in the justness of the distinction between an attach ment to principles and an attachment to men. And the testimony which you are pleased to render in my behalf is more highly esteemed by me, because you place it on the ground of pub lic principles and public services. 1 believe with you, that the present contest in the U. States is one against power in behalf of the liberties of the country. I will add an ex pression of my conviction that it involves also the existence both of the constitution and the union of the States. The inequality of the con dition of the parties to this contest, in the parti culars mentioned by you, is very great; but the goodness of the cause of the Whigs should sti mulate their energy and perseverance. Nor should they be discouraged by occasional or local defeats. The tories in England have sometimes maintained the ascendency for long periods of time. And history demonstrate* that, nlthongh Scylla, Marius,Caesar,Cromwell, Napoleon, and the whole tribe of military hr roes bad trampled upon the liberties of the peo ple, and, under the forms of law, had long violated all law, they respectively, in the end, received what they merited, the execrations of mankind. The virtues of our Chief Magistrate, which should make him an exception from the fate of his class, are yet to be developed. I am, gentlemen, with great respect, Your friend and obedient servant, II. CLAY. Messrs. John L. Hickman, dec. From the It a leigh flegixter. Election of Governor—We have the gra tification of announcing the re-election, onyes j terday, of David L. Swain, as governor of the Stale for the ensuing year, after a most violent effort to defeat him. He was opposed by liam D. Moseley, Ksq. Speaker of the Senate, the strongest member of his party in the Legisla ture, and the individual whom w-e should have preferred, had defeat awaited us. There were i three ballotings, as follows: ]*t. 2d. 3 Swain 9.3 93 97 Mosely 85 89 S9 Scattering 10 6 This attempt to beat Governor Swain in the j Inst year of his Constitutional term, to say noth ing of the debt which the State owes him for hi* unwavering devotion to her best interest*, i* a practical commentary on the principles of the party that are now rallying in support of Van Boren for the Presidency. Chained tot e car of their idol, driven bv a blind enthusiasm, i and regardless of every thing but the advance ment of party purposes, they rush on with tm petuosity and desperation as “the horse rushet to the battle.” _ From Georgia, we learn that John r. s (now Senator) has been chosen a Senatoro the United States for six years from the J day of March next, when his present term expire; and that Alfred Cuthbert has been elec ed a Senator from the same State, to fill the va* caricy occasioned by the resignation of Jo Forsyth, (now Secretary of State.) Singular Circumstance.—Two juries, who were impanelled in two criminal cases, (I 7 and Ferris.) during the past week, and w could not affree on a verdict, being kept toge>o as is customary, attended Christ Church on Sunday last in custody of the Sheriff, and near the valedictory address of Dr. Ducachf.t. rto bably this case is without a parallel. The poor sweeps naving been gagged, it is now proposed to get rid of the dustman’s bell, the muffin bell, and the post bell, and finally the crying of sprats, and salmon, and strawberries, ending in the muffling of the horses’ feet and cart wheels!_ Political Stock Gambling of the 6panish Mi. item.—The Americans have been called a stock-jobbing, trafficking, huckstering people— a nation of shopkeepers, devoured with the pas sion lor lucre—perfectly absorbed with the love of gold, Ac.; but we doubt—corrupt as our pre sent administration is, and suspected as they areofhaving gambled in the public funds—w he th**r it be possible to find a parallel on record to the extensive fraud of this kind, of which the Spanish Ministry stand accused. Our readers are acquainted with the extent to which these speculations in Spanish stocks were carried on at Paris, London, Ac., predicated on the infor mation from day to day communicated by tele graph. and which ended in a loss of something like 20 millions sterling, and total ruin to nume rous persons, suicide, Ac. It appears that the project of the law for the recognition of the Cortez and Guebhard loans must have been introduced for the purpose of speculating probably on previous large pur chases by the ministers, and that they then gave it the go-by in the Procuradores, even Santa Fe, to keep up the farce going over from the ministers to the opposition. The London He rald describes the scene in the Chamber as painfully ludicrous.— N. V. Star. “Toreno made a very weak reply to the ob wrvations against the total recognition. Mar tinei did not say a word, and so sure was the victory that Moscoso did not even come down to vote. The Procuradores themselves seemed to be tired to death of the discussion, and it was f»r .some minutes undecided whether the vote be taken by acclamation or by nominal votation. For regularity sake the latter was adopted, anil so useles did it appear that the Secretaries began to yawn as they counted over toe names of the membtrs present, and Toreno anJ Martinez sat in a kirn’ of easy tooth-pick as if to say—‘ What a o.'re! when every ",h|y thinks that the chamber is w ith ns.’ The '"reign speculators took their hats in hand, each »Mious to be the first to start his comier with ,he confirmation of all his anticipated iiitelli P^nce. and the correspondents of the London Papery tanging on for punctuality sake, in or der that tktir own ears should confirm a fact of 'hich.uut doubt could be entertained. Tire Owl to her mate is culling, The River his hoarse song sings, But the Oak is matked for falling, That lias stood for a hundred springs. Hark! a blow,—and a dull sound follows; A second,— he bows his head, A third,—and the Wood’s dark hollows Now know that their King is dead. His arms from the trunk are riven,— His body all barked and squared,— And he’s now, like a felon, driven, In chains, to the dock yard, lie’s sawn through the middle and turned, For the ribs of a frigate free, And he’s caulked, and pitched, and burned, And now—he is fit for the sea! Old now—with his wings outspread Like a ghost (if a ghost may be) He will triumph again, though dead, And be dreaded in every sea. The lightning will blaze about, And wrap him in flaming pride, And the thunder-loud cannon will shout In the light, from his bold broadside. And when he has fought,—and won, And honored from shore to shore, And his journey on earth is done,— Why what can he ask for more? IN that long train of diseases which seem to grow with the growth of civilized society, Consumption takes the lead in its relentless inroads upon human life; yet 'his dreadful disorder is easily overcome in its earlier stages. It is only when neglected that it ar rives at the terrific maturity whLh so often baffles the sagacity of professional science. An obstinate cough is the customary forerunner of the pulmonary con sumption Improper neglect in the timely adminis tration of simple and salutary remedies, is sure to be reproved by a dreadful succession of consumptive symptoms —oppression of the hreas'; grerni-h and bloody spittle; ulcerated lungs and hectic fever; shri veiled extreme-ties, and general emaciation of the whole bod/; prostration of strength; flushed cheeks; swollen feet and legs; and at last, in the lull posses don of the mental faculties, and while hope still wliis pers her flattering tale—void extremities, and a pre mature death. For the various stages of this complaint, one of the most approvi d remedies ever \et discovered is DR. RRLFE’S ASTHMATIC PILLS. This exceedingly powerful, and vet equally safe and innocent preparation, lias elfected thorough and rapid curis upon patients supposed to have been far advanc ed i i a confirmed Consumption, and who have exhibit, ed the appearances which usually inJicate a fatal ter mutation of he di .order. As the Tills require in ordinary cases no confine meut, they ivav be administered with confidence and safety to all ages and classes of people.
