In this Institution will be taught, besides the usual branches, the Latin, Greek, and French Languages, the Mathema tics, Natural Philosophy, Drawing, &c. The Classical Department will be under the special care of P. J. McLaughlin, a gentleman of high literary attainments, of unexceptionable moral character, and who has had considerable experience in the instruction of youth. In this Institution the Explanatory Mmle of Instruction is pursued; which is based upon the obvious principle, that abstract terms and defi nitions are less intelligible and pleasing to chil dren than real objects; and that the instruction which is given entirely in words, can never be so interesting and profitable, as that which is communicated with the aid of visible and tangi ble things. By thus explaining and illustrating the subjects of study before the students en ter upon them, they are well understood, and their progress is thereby facilitated and much increased. The Proprietor is decidedly of the opinion that youth are more easily led than driven in j the paths of science, and that order, in general, j is more effectually secured by a system of mo ral, than physical discipline. I This Institution continues to be well support ed, is now in a flourishing condition, and ar rangements have been made for the accommo dation of an additional number of students. The Proprietor hopes that no exertions on his part, or on that of his assistants, will be neglect ed, that will tend to the moral and intellectual j improvement of his students. Alexandria, August 15, 1834—2aw6w_ AIKS. rUKTEIi S SEMINARY ILL be re-opened, at the Dwelling of the Alexandria Bank, corner of Fairfax and Cameron streets, on the 13th of September, 1831. A Gentleman of liberal education and experi ence in the art of teaching, has recently taken the charge of the classes in Arithmetic, Natural Philosophy, Chemistry, and Astronomy. This acquisition, with suitable apparatus for exhibit ing experiments, and familiar lectures, which will be given on each branch, complete the ad vantages enjoyed within the limits of this Insti tution. B. Hallo well’s course of lectures are also attended through the winter season. With the exception of a few showers the weather since this day week has been very fa vorable for harvest operations, and reaping is in active progress in every direction in th;s dis trict: more than one-half of the Wheat is cut, but very little has been carried. There has been a moderate demand for Wheat during the week at very full prices, and, in some instances, n small advance was obtained on fresh parcels of Irish. In Manchester, on Saturday, rather extensive sales of white Canada V\ heat were made at about 7s 6d per 70 lbs. esterday we had a speculative demand for the same aiticle, and, as the market is pretty well cleared, rather more money was obtained. Several large par cels of Irish Wheat also changed hands yester day. The demand for Oats has been pretty steady throughout the week at about previous rates Fresh parcels of Flour and Oatmeal have found a fair sale at our last quotations.— There has been an import ol 2600 qrs. of Wheat, and 3423 qrs Beans from the Baltic this week; and 722 qrs. of Wheat, and 10S7 brls Flour are reported from Canada. 15S0 qrs. of W heat have been entered for exportation since our last, principally for Portugal, and there contin ues a pretty regular demand for Flour, in bond, tor exportation. The best sour at 19*; old sweet at 22s; and the recent imports ol sweet Philadelphia at 26s per br). This Morning. 15th, our Market was slender ly attended. For the freshest samples of fine Irish W’heat there was a moderate retail demand at full prices. There were not many samples of really good mealing Oats offering, and they were held at full prices; secondary qualities were rather lower: Several parcels of W elch Barley were retailed at 4 s per 60 lbs. Oatmeal and Flour were held at last week’s rates, but the de mand was very limited. Choice Malt was ra ther dearer. There were a good many sam ples of farmers’ New "Wheat offering; the quali ty was but middling—the best brought about 7s 6d per 70 lbs. A few new.Irish Oats were sold at 3s 2d per 45 lbs. _ SHOT.
