v^iriiordinary Pedes triamsm.—A German un icrtook fora bet of $300, to run, on Monday, 'savs the New York Courier,) from the corner )f Fourteenth street and Third Avenue to Ha?r iem and back in 80 minutes. He performed this extraordinary feat in 77 minutes, and ap peared afterwards but little fatigued. The dis *ance by measurement is 12 miles—6 miles out and 6 back: he is about 27 years of age, and and weighs 147 lbs.__ Strawberries were selling in the New York market, on Tuesday, at 2s. 6d. per quart. It is rumored that Com. Rogers is about to re sign his place on the Board of Navy Commis sioners, on account of ill health, and it is thought that Commodore Elliot will be appointed to the vacancy._ We will thank Mr. Bicknell when he is mak ing up his next table of Broken Banks, Corpo rations, &c., to omit the Corporation of Alex andria. The notes of the Corporation of Alex ia are now as good as the notes of any bank n the country. j Appointments to Office.—The following letter, j written by Gen. Washington, when President, in j answer to one from a very intimate friend who wanted an appointment, is characterized by those just political views and noble sentiments, by which its author was through life distinguish ed: “To you, sir, and others who know me, I be- j lieve it is unnecessary for me to say, that when 1 accepted the important trust committed to my j charge by my country, I gave up every idea of, personal gratification that l did not think was compatible with public good. Under this im pression, I plainly foresaw, that that part of my Silty which obliged me to nominate persons to jtfices, would, in many instances, be the most irksome and unpleasing; for, however strong my personal attachment might be to any one, however desirous i migni oe oi giving nim a ;iroof of my friendship, and whatever might be his expectations, grounded upon the amity which had subsisted between us, I was fully de termined to keep myself free from every en gagement that could embarrass me in dis charging this part of my administration.— 1 have, therefore, uniformly declined giving any decisive answer to the numerous applications which have been made to me, being resolved, that whenever I shall, be called upon to nomi nate persons for those offices which may be created, I will do it with a sole view to the pub lic good, and will bring forward those who, up on every consideration, and from the best in formation l can obtain, will, in my judgment, be most likely to answer that great end.” We understand, says the London Morning Chronicle, that recent letters from Mr. C. Kern- j ble in the United States make it doubtful whe- j ther he will return to this country as early as j June next. His American engagements expire on the 1st of that month; after which his daugh ter will be married to Mr. Butler, and it is said that he means to spend some time with them, and not to re-visit England until the autumn. Mrs. C. Kemble is, we believe, still in Paris su-! perintending the musical education of Her daugh ter Adelaide under the celebrated Master Bor rlogni; but it has been asserted within the last week that she will shortly sail for A*ew York to join her husband and daughter. Nothing^seems to have been yet arranged for the performance ufCharles Kemble next seasonat Covent-garden.
The following specimen of eloquence was de livered by an Indian woman over the contigu ous graves of her husband and infant: The Father of Life and Light has taken from me the apple of my eye, and the core of my heart, and hid them in these two graves. I will moist en the one with my tears, and the other with the milk of my breast, till I meet them again in that country where the sun never sets.” GOODS! GOODS!! GOODS!!! CONGRESS.
In the Senate on Thursday, Mr. Clay, in pre senting a memorial, took occasion to say that it is now more than twelve months since we had a Secretary of the Treasury appointed in the Constitutional form by the President, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, and that six months of the session had now pas sed without the Senate’s receiving the nomina tion of the gentleman who acts as Secretary of the Treasury. The resolution submitted by Mr. Wright, to inquire into the propriety of providing compen sation for the Hon. Elisha R. Potter, while at tending at the Seat of Government, to contest the right of the Hon. Asher Robbins to a seat on the lloor of the Senate, as a Senator from the State of Rhode Island, was considered and adopted. Mr. Poindexter, in pursuance of notice giv en, asked and obtained leave and introduced a bill providing for the meeting of the next ses sion of Congress prior to the lirst Monday in December next; which was read and ordered to a second reading. The bill was then, on mo tion of Mr. Poindexter, read the second time by its title, and made the special order of the day for Monday next. The Senate was yesltr'hnj principally engaged with private bills, upon one of which an unplea sant dispute occurred Detween Mr. Poindexter and Mr. Linn of Missouri. The House of Representatives was engaged with business relating to the District of CoJum i bia. The bill for the extension of the charter of 1 the Fire Insurance Company of Alexandria was passed in Committee of the Whole. The bill incorporating the Washington Mo nnment Company was debated by Messrs. Pearce, of Rhode Island, Burges, Chilton, and Chinn, and laid aside. The bill introduced by Mr. .Stoddeht, for the reliefof the Citv of Washington, fsee another column,) was opposed by Mr. Hardin, of Ken tucky, and supported by Mr. Stoddert, Mr. Mercer, and Mr. Stewart. The House then adjourned. J June 3—lin —_LfgU-iL!_U? From the Petersburg Litelligcncer of Thursday ANOTHER TORNADO. I It becomes our painful duty to record the des tructive march of a second tornado. Yester day afternoon the clouds began to gather in the northwest, and about 6 o’clock, assumed an aw ful and threatening appearance. The lightning was very vivid, and the rain fell in torrents; the wind, although strong enough to carry oft the limbs of trees, dM no damage in town; but the same roaring noise, which accompanied the late whirlwind, was distinctly heard, denoting a calamity to Chesterfield similar to that which so recently befel the neighboring counties on this side of the Appomattox. Only a few particu lars have reached us, falling far short, we fear, of the full extent of the damage. The Richmond stage did not arrive until nine o’clock, the fallen timber in the road having ob structed its passage. The passagengers state that the storm, where it crossed the turnpike, extended from Bass’s Hili to Swift Creek, a dis tance of nearly three miles, prostrating every thing within its sweep. At Swift Creek several houses were blown down. j At the plantation of Mrs. Archer, the over seer’s house, stable, barns, &c. were blown dowr —the overseer severely wounded, and one 0/ two members of his family, and a servant, in jured. The plantations of Mrs. Lynch, Mr. Walthall Hatcher, Mr. Otway P. Hare, Mr. William R. i Hill, and several others, suffered severely from the destruction of the out-houses, fences, tim 1 ber, &c. but we have not heard of any person 1 al injury except at Mrs. Archer’s. I The passengers in the Richmond stage had a very narrow escape—the wind having cross ed the road a few minutes before the stage reached the scene of its destruction. _ AUC TlblTs A L ES BY WM. D. IN that long train of diseases which seem to grow with the growth of civilized society, Consumption takes the lead in its relentless inroads upon human life; yet this dreadful disorder is easily overcome in its earlier stages. It is only when neglected that it ar rives at the terrific maturity which so often baffles the sagacity of professional science. An obstinate cough is the customary forerunner of the pulmonary con sumption Improper neglect in the timely adminis tration of simple and salutary remedies, is sure to be reproved by a dreadful succession of consumptive symptoms —oppression of the breast; greeni'-h and bloody spittle; ulcerated lungs and hectic fever; shri veiled extremeties, and general emaciation of the whole body; prostration of strength; flushed cheeks; swollen feet and legs; and at last, in ihe full pusses sionof the mental faculties, and while hope still whis pers her flattering tale—cold extremities, and a pre mature death. For the various stages of this complaint, one of the most approved remedies ever vet discovered is DR. RELFE’S ASTHMATIC PILLS. This exceedingly powerful, ana yet equally safe and innocent preparation, has effected thorough ami rapid curc9 upon patients supposed toha-e been far advanc edin a confirmed Consumption, and who have exhibit ed the appearances which usually indicate a fatal ter mination of »he disorder.
