Buelah Hinkson. came back to the island her grand father had known and loved and she and her mother turn ed Clover Crest into the d lightful spot it is now. Hod Z Norrie Hunter fell in love with a house that had teen a° monastery under the Frenc%x in the.l7th centery, and made it Cruzana Club. Business week wrote them up, and the island forgave them. TheE Eric Lawaetz had an idea, and out of it St. Croix—the-Sea was created in such a fashion that Jim Weber his friends from Condado could take 1y over on lease. The Flemings from La Grange decided to try a Christiansted operation as well in Richmond House. And now this year (this articie was writen in 1956) D.ck and Tl Richards, starting out, with relics of those tourists, the Caribs, have ended in per suading their friends to help them build and open Estate Carlton, now being operated by Hugh and Louise Leighton partners in the venture. It is as gracious and lovely a hotel as the first Estate Carlton; on whole site they built. Numerous small guest houses are around the island, where tourists stay who wish to live more informaelly (and have more money left over to spend in thé shops) may stay. And a few lucky people can find a house to rent. It was indeed unfortunate that this action was _~not taken sooner. The news of the closing was unfortunate,! indeed. s THE FARMERS HOME Administration has been one of those federal agencies which has made a most favorable im pression on the community. “Tts functions reached into the areas of farms and of homes, giving individuals an opportun-- ity to improve their economic status. L OLDER HEADS WILL recall that the Farmers Home Administration grew out of the Farm Security Administra tion, which operated here for many years during and follow ing World War IL. That agency, a part of the Department ‘of Agriculture, had as its purpose the improvement of smiall farmers, which it did through loans for crops, animals ,and{ other development, and through careful planning of farm and home programs. As the situation on the mainland changed, this program was-withdrawn, but certain phases were continu ed under the FHA. e ONE OF THE unfortunate aspects of the FSA was that it was administered from one of its southern states headquerJ ters. s executive personnel, strangers to local ways and cus toms stuck strictly to what might have been applicable some-- where else. Yet, despite this, the agency carried on and helped o considersble tmber of small farmers. Now that the FSA has gone, and the Farmers Home Administration is no longet ‘with us, it might be well if the would fll o gap, As a starter it has competent, cipable per ogguehapmgx'amr e e e THE INDIVIDUAL farmer is still the backbone of any some thought ought to be given to carrying on such an office: THE ST.
