You will notice that the Company has again declared the large Bonnas of £2 per Cent. (the largest ever coutir ncusly de clared by any Company) oun amouuts in sured. As it is desirable that extracts of the most striking features brought out in the Pamphlet, be inserted in *‘the Avis,” beg you will, after the insertion of tiis letter, insert Mr. Dove’s Report of 4th August 1865 which contains a lucid ex planation of the whole maiter 1 ques tion in a concise style, and af'erwards in sert the several extracts underlined by me, all at your leisure and in soch a se quence as not to tire your readers. I expect a supply of the above Pam phlet for circulation. Yours truly, 'E. MONEFELDT, 4\‘!."(‘“l. Royal Insurance Office, Christiansied, St. Croix 4th September 1865, ACTUARY’'S REPORT. TO THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE ROYAL INSURANCE COMPANY. Gentlemen, The termination of another of the periodical intervals which you have ap pointed for the investigation of the Life Branch of your Business gives me the opportunity ot again submittine my Re port of the result of the caleulations made to ascertain, with precision, the amount of the liabilities of the Company nnder its various engagemeunts 1n that particular department. It wall be remembered that at the last guinquennial period my Report was ac companied by an “Appendix,” including mioute and extended detarls of the com putations made, whicl occupied a space tar exceeding that which could with any propriety be given ina Report to be read at a meeting of the shareholders. I have adnpted the same course now. In my Statements made at that time, I expressed a confilent hope that the un hesitating disclosure thus made of your experience would bring with it an ample reward by the entire confidence in the stability of your Company as a Life As surance Establishment which would be engendered in the mind of every reader on the perusal of the unusually ample details which were then given. 'Fhis ex pectation has becn most amply tulfitted. Whether it be from the originality of the form of that exposition of your af fairs, or whether from the degree of suc cess attained in the effort to convey infor mation on a Suhje(:t gvnvrn”y considered abstruse, in language intelligible to ordi nary readers, it is ut any rate certain that the statements then made have been fol lowed by an extension in the Life De partment duaring the subsequent five years which exceeds all that could have been expected as a consequent result. Itis, of conrse, manifest, however, that the subsequent prosperity experienced could not even partially be caused by any mere elucidation, however novel or acceptable in its form, 1f it had not been for the circumstances that the facts de tailed furnished the material for the de claration of a satislactory Bouus of far more than usual maguitude. A few illustrations will sufficiently rove the large advances made by the sompany since 1859, to which I have just adverted. The total Premiums received from the commencement of the Company to the ST« CROLX AVI S date of the last quiranennial investication in 1859, being a period of lilteen yeurs, was £332,993 11s. 4d. The premiums since recoived for the lastfive years alone are £543,025 13s. 541., an advance of 63 per cent. over the total result of the form er period, including thrice the space of tiine. The following example will place the charaeter and extent of cur advance in a still mere strikivg light. The sum assured on New Policies ef fected in the last year, 1564, amounted to £1,014,897 11s. 54, and the Premiunm thereon lo £32,708 .10s. 7d., actually more than the toial sum assured and Premiam on New Policies colieeted for the entire ten years from 1845 to 1554 in clusive, L Again, The total funds accamulated, after paying all claims and expenses, during the lust five years, taking the Life, Annu ity, and Eadowment Branches, amount to £434.962—0n the average £86,992 an nually., ‘T'his amount 18 65 per cent. more than the sum colleeted on those combined Branches for the preceding fif leen years, The Appendix wili be found to contain other ¢x ""l‘l'~"“-‘ of progress rqu;\‘.?}' ¢on clusive, The total amount of funds in hand on those Branehes on the 31st December was £697,866. It was only £262,904 10 15859 —a very remarkable growth of amount for so shiort a space of time. The anrount of funds in the Life Branch alone, viz £549.615 (without reckoning the debts on half-eredit PPolicies) 1s equal in amount to 63 per cent. of the e e Preminms received from the eomnience ment of the Company’s basiners. This Fosalt 1n ilselt 1s a tesd of the t:x«)fl.{,‘:‘axi() amounts abstracted for elaims and charg ¢S Ufl\".i‘]‘\ >-‘llu'i ekl l'i“!’. The coneclusion arrived at from the se vere and ricorous ealeulations made, which have now occupicd some mouths in preparation, 1s of the most aratifying I'\.;ln.. The amonunt of profit on the last five years is £1635,9538 14s. 34 Tukine, us on the iast oceasion, an even sum, sayv .£165 000, and appropri ating one-thitd thereof (£55.000) to the credit of the proprictors, I find the ve maining amount to be suflicient, even though the iunterest of money shounld on ly be three per cent., to provide a Rever sionary Bouus of £2 per cent. per annum to be added to the orizinal sum Assured of every Participating Policy est cted pre viously to the Ist Junuary, 1863, and ex isting on the Ist January, 1865, for cach entire year that it had been in existence siuce the last Appropriation of Bonas. It is difficalt to moderate the expres sion of my satisfaction and thankfulness in having had the rare opportunity of announcing now on three successive oc casions, as the result of my computations, so large a Bonus as is represented by the above figures. The total number of Assurances now on the Company’s books is as under No. 10,041. sum assured £4,655,033, premiuni £152.159. Many of these Assurances are, howev er, on the non-profit scale, and on Parti cipating Policy shares in the present di vision of surplus unless eff-cted more than two years on the Ist of January of the present year; the amount assured, which will benefit by the Bonus now de clared, is, therefore, considerably less than Three Millions sterling. The Appendix will be found to con tain many arguments and explanations bearing on the conservative principles adopted in the processes of valuation es tablished, which give security to the transactions of the Lite Branch, and whicl, at the same time, apply the mate rials of that scenrity for the ultimate ad vantage of cach of the parties engaged in the contracts—the assured as well as the ASSUrer. Y These comprise matters referring to the toading on the pure premium, the opera tion of realised interest for a succession of years above the rate used in the com putation and the maintenance of a high standard of eligibiiity. Oa the latter subjeet, I am happy to announece that I have suceeeded, as far as eould reasonably be expeeted, consi dering the difficultres in my way, in con tinuing the investigation into the morta lity prevailing among our declined lives. The correspoudence neeessary to obtain information- for this purpose was very ex'ensive, and the inquiries needful in all parts of the world were of such a kind as only to stop stort of the semblanee of a system of espiounge, but the effort was singularly su-cessful. Out of 2381 lives rejected in the last twenty years, 1914 have been distinetly traced. The tabulating this collected informa tion, aftev undergoing all the processes applied to the aceepted Policies, has re sulted in displavine clearly the widely reparate points, indicating respectively ruin and entire suceess, which may, one or other, be approached by an Assuranece Company, in propetion to its neglect or adeption of stiiet investigation iuto the state of healih of the lives proposed TOF asstranec::, In my last report of this kind, I point ed with much satisfietion to the elements of prosperity which I discerned in ihe “Royai” as on'y waiting to be developed into a successful expansion. That anti cipated (h'vviupt‘.::-i:t has since beea so rapid and so great, that the Company may be more than content if the new busi ness for the next quinquennial period ap proximates to, yet does not reach, the magnitude attained in the last five years. ROYAL INSURANGE COMPANY e— EXTRACT FROM THE REPORT FOR THE YEAR 1863, e Fire Branch. In the FIRE BrRANCH an increase of Business has been realized, exceeding in amount that of any one year hitherto. The Premiums of the Year reach the sum of £341,668 3s. 2d., being an advance of £40,977 7s. 3d. over the preceding year. The Premiums have been enhanced in four years by «£113,353 155.11 d., the largest amount of increase having been obtained in thelast year. Duty. The test provided by the amount of Duty paid to Government furnishes corresponding evidence of the progress of the RovaL INSUR ANCE CompPany. The increase, by the pay ments made for the year 1863, is far larger than at any former period. The amount of Duty paid by the Company in 1862 was ..£75,992 19 0 SR 88,966 6 2 Showing an increase of ....£12,973 7 2 Among the incidents which have tended to the advancement of the “Rovar’ within the last few months may be reckoned lits action with respect to the losses sustained by the ex plosion of the “Lotty Sleigh,” which attracted attention and public favour by its unhesitating promptness. The publication, under Parliamentary sanc tion, of the Balance sheets of Insurance Com panies, has proved another source of advantago to this Establishment. The analysis of these accounts, which has been completed apparently bv an accomplished hand, places the RoyaL IN surRaNCE CoMPANY in the highest position, both 29 a Fire and a Life Establishment, and exhihits its comparative prominency wiih respect to all the other Companies established under the Act of 7th and Bth Vict, in an equally favourable light, whether its Accumulated Capital, its Premiums, or the ratio of its Expenditure be made the subject of inquiry. As the largest total of revenue and the larg est ratio of progression have heen obtained in the present year, so it happens that the largest Profit which it has ever fallen to the Directors to record has likewise on this occasion to be announced. Life Branch. The advances made year by year, in the amount of New Insurances effected show clearly the estimation in which the Company is held. "The following is the statemeni for the last five yearsi— Net sum assured on new Policies after deducting Net Premiums. Guarantees. 1859 £434,4701110 £13,086 0 6 $a00:- sadllß 2 150191710 L FRLIeLiY 0 1782718 O 1862 701,42715 3 22,33313 2 1863 752,5451810 2406912 8 The half-year of 1864, however, far outstrips the orati of increase indicated by the figures just quoted, as the Sum Assured for that period of six months only, ACTUALLY EXCEEDS HALF- A-MILLION STERLING. The rate of Mortality, likewise, still presents highly favourable features, and augurs well for the result to be shown by the quinquennial in vestigation, which is to take place when the present year is concluded. The Life and Annuity Funds are augmented qy the large Sum of £106,052 4s. 3d. in the limit of a single year. British Branches and Agencies. In the UniTen KiNngpom, the progress made has been this year beyond anticipation. ST. CROLX A VI S BRISTOL. The exertions of the Local Manager, seconded by the influence of a Committee of the highest mercantile position in that city, are rapidly ex tending the business throughout the entire of the West of England and South Wales. BIRMINGHAM. The like instrumentality in Birmjngham is producing a very marked and satisfactory result. There are, in fact, few places here or abroad where the “RoyaL” is making more rapid strides than in the Midland Counties. LONDON. The Company’s Business for the last year in the Metropolis has likewise closed with very prosperious results. SCOTLAND Affords the most remarkable instance of the favour with which this Company has heen re ceived, and illustrates the fact that hitherto in the history of this Establishment impediments and obstructions, by generating energy to over come, only accelerate its consequent progress. Whilst the WesTERN Branch, in Scotland, more than maintains the high position it had already reached, the EasrerN Branco. at Edinburg, under its indefatigable Local Man ager, has made a progress in its L'ire Business which may be deemed in that country to be almost unprecedented. Merchants and Manu facturers, and Insurers, indeed, of all classes, have been convinced that the RovAL INSURANCE Company, while promoting its own advance ment, looks likewise to the accommodation and interests of its Insurers, and on that account it is gradually progressing to a position in Scot land possibly not far behind that of the best of its own native Establishments. It is most gratifying to add that likewise in its Life Pre miums, the Company has had a large develop ment in a land distinguished by the magnitude and excellence of its own great Institutions. IRELAND. The Directors have, in addition, much satis faction in announcing that they have succeeded in obtaining a Committee of Reference in Ire land, which, from the high character of its mem bers, inciuding some of the names most known and honoured throughout the country, they con sider will be attended with the most satisfactory extension of their business in that kingdom.
