J. A. Stakemann. D T—— Sommunicadioy. To the Editor of the St. Croix Avis, DEAR SIR, You have published a draft for the Country schools, which has been recom mended by the Minority of the School- Commission, in prefcrence to that proposed by His Excellency the Governor. I hope you will allow me, in the same public manner, to add a few remarks, which, I believe, are necessary, in order to show the real merits of the said draft. It is proposed, that the children be dis missed when eleven years old, and it is said, that thus one year is added to their schooliime in the Lvery-day school but during the first two years they are to at tend only two hours daily, instead of four hours, consequently not one single hour is added to the schooltime, to compensate for three years attendance on Saturday, as the latter is to cease. In short, we are to give up the Saturday school, without receiving for it any thing in return. We are, however, expected to believe, that very great benefits will result from such a change! No doubt it would serve certain interests, but evidently not those of the Country schools, or of the Country-child ren even those parents who wish for an extension of the schooltime in the Every day school, as an equivalent for the Satur day-school, will hardly be simple enough to believe, that in this way justice is done to them, or that they have got what they wish, and what they have a right to ask. As then the eleventh year barely makes up for the daily loss of two schoolhours during the first two years, we claim the twelfth year, to make up for the loss of the Saturday school. This was the first proposal of the School-Commission, and it 18 again, though in a modified form, includ ed in the plan which has been lately adopted. Any thing short of it would be wronging the Country people, or at least their children. As to voluntary attendance, it is need less to speak about it, as long as -the pa rents enjoy so little freedom of action with regard to their children. Circumstances must alter very considerably before, gene rally speaking, such a thing shall be possi ble; this wants no explanation, and with any thing merely nominal, which only fur nishes new pretexts for making unjust claims upon us, neither we nor the people are served. Your obdt. servant, Jo Gmm' Friedensfeld, June sth 1866.
