To the Proprietors Managers of Estates in St. Croix, Gentlemen, T have been informed by several Proprietors of estates that reports most injurious to my char acter and prejudicial to my urefulness as a Min ister of the Gospel are, and have been circulated 1 among you. I am accused of striving at meetings which I hold for the religious instruction of the la bourers to make them discontented with their wages and creating an insurrection among theu. Mr. Thompson the clerk of St. Jobn’s Church is also accused of going among the labourers and circulating pamphle{s among them with the same design of rendering them discontented. I therefore solemnly declare that these reports are false, slanderous, and withoutany just foun- dation. They bear the impress of falschood on them, for what possible advantage could cither of us derive from creating discontent among the la bourers, exciting against us the opposition of so influential a body as yourselves and expos- ing ourselves to the penalty of the Law. I there- fore challenge my accuscers to come forward with proof azainst me. i I am accustomed to be slandered in {his Island. A pamphlet has been printed and cie- culated among a part of my Parishioncers for the purpose of keeping up ill feeling against mic, and I, a minister of God and a gentleman by birth and education, am not allowed the previ- lege of the poorest criminal to know the charpes I:id againsi bim, for the pamphlet has been kept from me and my friends. Any where else but in this island such cow- ardly conduct would mark with infamy its das tardly perjetrators. The assassin who stabs his vietim is held up to execcation, but the scandal monger who sceks to ruin his opponent by injuring his character and reputation is re ceived and welcomed in society in St Croix. If St. Croix i~ 1.1 ns a place where gentlemen sl v cedom of opinion prevail, something ougit to be dine to check iho circulation of lying reports, and all honour- able men should combine to banish those slun- derers from Society who spare not in their ven om the character of gentlemen nor the reputa- tion of ladies. Let me hope then that you, Gentlemen, will believe me incapable of returning the kindness and hospitality I have received from some of your body for the last four years, with the in- gratitude with which I have been charged. Believe me, gentlemen, with every “wish for your prosperity, 'l Yours faill:lully, i F. H. ALMON, Rector of St. Jolin's. i Christiansted Ist June 1865. THE “AVIS.” P u ee e eee ee S Shrisiizusiel, BY Grojz, ee D i FRIDAY, 2xp JUNE 1865.

By the Royal Mail Company’s Steam- er Seine, which arrived at St. Thomas on Wednesday afternoon, Earopean DPa- pers to the 17ih uito. were received. They contain no news of importance. The St. Thomas Times contains the intelligence of the capture of Jeff. Davis, with two regiments of cavalry, in Alaba- ma, by Generals Stoneman aud Guerson. Gold was quoted at 131. t -=ddi6> WE have received an answer from Rev. Gardin to the report of the minori ty of the School Commission which we intend publishing at an carly date. We only must express some surprise that Rev. Gardin should have held the opinion that we would have refused insertion to his answer, except he sent it to us through the channel which he adopted. ST CROLX AV.L S. F'rom the Spectator May 13.) The Emperor of the French has issued a singular proclaimation to the Desert tribes of Algeria. He declares that Prance langed thirty-five years ago to relieve A]gh’rs from ()"»[)l't'.\‘si():s, but admires the nnlicury honour which induced the Arabs “before submitting to invoke the judg ment o1 God. But God has prosounced acknowledge, therefore, the mysterious decrees of Providence.” Two ceenturies azo the Ganls also were vauquished, but their assimiiation to the victorious Ro mans created a great nation. ‘“Accept, then, facts. Your Prophet declares, ‘God gives power to whomsoever He will (Chapter ii. *Of the Cow,” verse 2483.) Now, the power I hold from Him I wish to exercise in your interest and for your advantage.” His Majesty continues by arguing that two millions of Arabs can not resist forty millions of renchmen, that the Koran binds Mussulmans to ob serve their oath of alleginnee, and that Arabs have shared the glory of Irench arms, and finished by another appeal to the Koran, which states that «“Ile whom God direets is well direeted.,” (Chapter Vi "Il Eralt,? verse 177.) Prodgsianis can hardly help wondering what the mo ther of this “Eldest Son of the Chureh?” will think of it all. What Arabs will think we have endeavoured to show in another place. The International Exhibition at Duob lin was openeil by the Prince of Wales on the 10th inst., amidst an Lmposing cere mounial. The Exhibition promises to be a success, the buatlding being really mag nificent, halt stone, half olass and iron, and the colleetions, particularly of Art, rivatline those of the Exhibition of 1851. Rome and France have in particular ex erted themselves, and English painters have forwarded a splendid array of paint ings. Nothing of special interest marked the opening except an omission of all spe cially Irish music which has greatly an noyed the newspapers, and a perpetaal re ference 1n the addresses to the absence of the Priincess, whom the good people wanted to see at least as much as ihe Prince. The Prince was exceeding well received by the citizens of Dnblin, and was to leave the city to-day. No deserip tion of the contents of the palace has as yet been published, bat Mr. Story’s «“Ju dith,” it scems clear, will carry off the palm in sculpture, as his “Sybil” did in the colleetion of 1861, American. By the President “W. Huater, Acting Sceretary of State. From the Boston Advertiser.) HOW BOCOTH'S BCLY WAS DISPOSED OF, WasninetoN, May, 2, 1865. The vexed question as to the disposal made of the remains of John Wilkes Booth is at fength settled by a statement which muy be regarded as final. After the head and heart, which have been deposited in the army medical museum in this city, had been removed, the eorpse was placed in charge of two men, who, after various rrovements ealeniuted to baflle imperti nent curiosity, dug a grave in a little spot of ground close to the penitentiary, where for some years felons have been burieds DBooth’s Body was depo=itcd here, and the earth over it was smoothed and carefuily sodded over. The other graves of less infamous felons had previ cusly been levelled, and astrong gunard is now in charge of the spot, and will con tinve to keep it undisturbed until the orass has eraown soo thic!\']y that uo one will ever Lie ab'e to distinguish the place where the assassiu’s corpse was interred from the other namreless graves around it. Order ileseinding Regulations, Prohibit ing the Exportation of Arms, Ammu nition, Horses, Mules and Live Stoek. The executive order of November 21, 1862, prohibiting the exportation of arms and ammunition from the United States, and the executive order of May 13, 1863, prohibiting the exportation of horses, mules and live stock, being no longer re quired by public necessities, the aforesaid are hereby rescinded and annulled. By order of the President, EDWIN M. STANTON, Secretay of War. From the Barbados West Indian.) INTER-COLONIAL NEWS. Both in Trinidad and Grenada the wea ther has put a stop to the reaping of the canes, and so far injured the prospects in the former, as to cause a diminution of the crop to the extent of 56000 hhds.,

if there should be a change for the hetter to enable the planters to go on with the reaping. The weather had become more favorable by the latest accounts in both Islands. An Ice Company has been got up in Berbice and succeeded in making Ice. Mr. Baynes bad assumed the administra tion of Grenada, and opened the Legis lature. We are glad to find both from his address and the replics of the Council and Assemply, that in Grenada crime is diminished aund the conduet of the labor ing people quiet. The Council say— “we have reasvu to be thankful that we live in a communiry in which crime of a serious nature is but little known, and the laboring population happy, peaceable and contented.” In St. Vincent it is se riously proposed, for the prevention of bastardy, that on oceasion-ot the birth of an illegitimate child, the father should be fined or imprisounced, and the mother’s head publicly shaved. From Gualaloupe we hear of a propo sal to run a vew lise of French Steamers from Havre to the Freuch Autilles, to share in the profit of the passeonger and dry goods conveyatice. GUADALOUPE. Crop operations. were proceeding briskly, spite of rainy weather disturbing operaticns on the estates. The wharves ot Pointe a-Pitre as well as the curing houses and stores of the plantations, were iull of sugar, shipping being very scarce, and the few vessels 1o port charging so hich a rate of freieht as to deter the mer chants from giving cargo. Several ships were expected, and the papers look for a fall in freight in a few days. “The Opera Company, umder the di rection es Mr. de Berrard, consistine of 91 artistes, after enlivening the Guada loupians for a few months, left in the Caraibe, on the 2nd instant, for Trinidad. “The Commercial of the 19th inst., states that the Martinigue Propagateur of the Ist mentions that the Pederal corvette, the Wachuselts, having taken a wrong course in leaving the 'bay of Fort-de- France, a matter to be expected when she took no pilot frem the shore, ground ed on a sandbank, from whieh she was got off with the assistance of a gang of conviets from the French frigate Bellone. The Wachusetls was under the necessity of going into dock to exami: e her bottom before continuing her voyage. “It is announced as certain, says the Commercial, that two merchants of Hiavre, Messrs. Dufour and Gery, have just joic ed in copartnership, for the purpose of establishing a line of steamers between that port and the French Antilles, for the purpose of monopolising the dry cools freights, and to be of service, during the active season of trans-oceanic passages, to the considerable contingent of passen gers who do not always find berths in the steamers of the already established lines.” BARBADO-=. We have to report much the same kind of weather, that has prevailed since the commencement of the month, alternations of rain and sunshine, very trying to the planters, whose expenses it has much increased in respect of fuel. The wind to-day lis strong from the South, and the morning opened with heavy showers and every indication of a rainy day, but the sun has come out very fierce, and the sky at present clear, and almost pronis ing to turn out yet a good sugar day; is a specimen of what we have had for the last six weeks. Notwithstanding the tan talising weather admirable progress has STe CROLX AV S been made with the reaping of the crop, over two thirds of which (say 32,000 hhds.) we reckon has been got in. The ship ments to date reach 21621 hhds; bestdes 3050 on board vessels in the Bay, which will probably sail before the Packet, or at any rate by the end of the week, viz Hhds.
