Savannah, Oct, 26 The situa tion in Screven county as to the result of the murder of Sheriff Brooker by the Zeigler brothers, according to last night's reports, is most serious and really remark able for a civiiized community. The Zeiglers are entrenched at their homestead, about five miles south of Sylvania and swear that they will not be taken alive, The Zeiglerr are populists and the district is a populist one. They have besides a number of re'a tives and family connections living in the country right around them all of whom have espoused their cause and sworn to stand by them to the death. A dozen or more of the close friends and relatives of the Zeiglers remain in their house or in the immediate neigh borhood, it is said, and all are armed to the teeth. The house, it is said, is a perfect arsenal of shotguns, Winchester rifles and revolvers. It occupies a com manding position and the garrison inside could do terrible execution against any party which attempted to invade their stronghold. THROUGH A TRESTLI4 An F. C. P. Freight Train Gees Down. Savannah, Ga., Oct, 26. Four teen cars of a south-bond local freight train on the Florida Cen tral and Peninsular railroad went through a burning trestle between SaVannah Junction and the Sa vannah river at midnight last night, and were burned with the trestle. The train consisted of twenty-five cars. The engine and part of the train ran over the tres tles before it was seen that it was on fire. The middle of the train went down in a heap, filling the narrow ravine beneath the trestle, and burned with it. No one was killed. Two train men were slightly injured. The railroad officials believe that the fire was the work of incendiaries, and de tectives were put on the case at once. SHOT HIMSELF. Chattanooga, Tenn., Oct. 4 26 C. L. Dibrell, auditor of the mon ey order department in the gener al offices of the Southern Express company, and known, to express people throughout the South, was found in a sitting posture in his coal-house today with a pistol grip ped tightly in his right hand and blood, which was flowing from his! KILLED A TRAITOR. Key West, Fla., Oct. 26 Let ters from Cuba state that insur gents have taken awful revenge on Roque Corral, whom they suspect ed of treachery. Corral was mayor of a town near Cienfuegos and pro fessed great devotion to the patri ot cause. The insurgent leaders trusted him fully and used him as a means of communication with friends in the United States. Re cently the insurgents learned that Corral had been corrupted by Spain and was playing the traitor. Tuesday morning the corpse of the mayor was found just outside the gates of the town. He had been hacked to death with swords and decapitated. Pinned to his breast was a placard reading: "So perish all traitors to Cuba." THE GREATEST CANAL. London, Oct. 26 A dispatch from St. Petersburg says that the Russian government has surveyed the route of a canal which will be the largest in the world. It will be a continuous waterway of 1000 miles, connecting the Black and Baltic seas, and costing 20.000,000 pounds. It will start from the port of Riga, on the Baltic sea, and use the rivers Dwina, Beresina and Dnieper on its route, entering the Black Sea at the port of Cherson.
