"Pensacola saloon-keepers will not be so churlish as to refuse to at tend the meeting next Tuesday nis:ht, merely because a box in the office of the Southern Express Company, bearing the brand "Peerless Lincoln County Hand Made Sour Mash Whisky," and ad dressed to "Willkinson Call, care S. S. -Leonard," argued the fact that the necessary stimulants for the occasion were purchased abroad. Our liquor dealers are made of sterner stuff. They may mentally resent the unwarranted Mr. Johanson Brings Scandinavi i ans to Florida. N. J. Johanson, who has been traveling througn the state in the interest of the Scandinavian Immi gration Company, a northern colo nization concern, arrived in the city yesterday from Tallahassee on his way to Savannah. Mr. Johanson was seen at the Travelers' Hotel by a Citizen re porter, and in reply to a question as to the outlook for a colony from his company in Florida, he said: "I have just completed arrange ments for a colony from the West, which we intend to bring to West Florida in December. The colo nists came from Scandinavia, and went to the west, but they were not satisfied with the climate or j crops. j 'I went through Florida and dc-! cided upon several places suitable HJETH5H5H5HSH5HH2SHSB5H5 is ijreiits luirnisiiina:. si Clothing. flens, Boys and Children Clothing in the Latest Styles. Pensacola Daily News. And yet Mr. Call says he never uses whisky only in moderation and by the advice of a physician. George Elliott once said that some men could not command veracity, and Mr. Call seems to be one of kind. FERTILIZER FACTORY. We must not let interest in the fertilizer factory die out. It is a very important industry absolute ly necessary to the business wel fare of our city. A large portion of the stock has been subsc ribed, and the balance can be raised in due time. A HANDSOME MAGAZINE We are indebted to ex-Chief Campbell for a very handsome copy of the Fireman's Journal ef Public Work, published in Chicago by J. E. Smith, who wis in Ocala last November during the State Firemen's Convention and Tour nament, aid gave our firemen much valuable advice in their line of work, and wrote up some glow ing accounts of Ocala and the fire men in his valuable paper. Among the attractive illustrations and photographs was a picture of ex Chief Campbell, Chiefs A. J. Har ris of Tampa, H. M. Papworth of Sanford, and Haney of Jackson ville. It contains a splendid cut of the Ocala fire headquars, with No. i hesi wagon and boys, and showing a rear view of the Wit ness building. There were also good cuts of the championship bel, the Atlanta fire exhibit build ing and headquarters of the Atlan ta fire department, and gave the rules and regulations of the com ing race, with a list of the compa nies that have entered the contest. A good photo was given of the Lake City firemen. This issue was principally a report of the twenty-third annual convention, neid at vugusta, Lrx, uct. 7-10, 1895. At Tallahassee I met George W. Saxon, who is engaged in raising tobacco, and he informed me that the crop of tobacco from twenty acres of land on his plantation ag gregated 20,coo pounds, and I de cided that tobacco was the most profitable business for the first colony to engage in. The tobacco will be raised and put in the form of plug tobacco. We will have experienced tobacco growers to instruct the colonists, and we anticipate that the first colony will be very successful. 'The second colony will be on the east coast or in the vicinity of Punta Gorda. This colony will be brought directly from Sweden, and will engage in the raising of early vegetables and tropical fruits." Mr. Johanson will leave for Sa vannah this morning, and after making another trip through West Florida he will leave for the West, where final arrangements will be made. The colonists will probably return with Mr. Johanson. Citi- zen. the authorities are sure ability to prevent it. of their NOTICE. Do Li i in m ru in ru in The firm of R B. It will be in order for them to tell us why this is done. The editor of one of our Methodist contemporaries suggests that they need not be afraid that somebody will accuse them of being religious. No, for there are other things which go to determine that factor in a man's life. We are inclined to the thought that the people sit on the back seats from modesty. ome people, we mean, mepeo- pie in general are much more mod est than most people imagine. I This is true of them especially in public assemblages. It would nervously prostrate some men if they thought they had to make a speech. The same kind of fear controls them even in their attend ance upon meetings where speak ing is to be done. We have seen the same disposition manifested at political meetings. Whatever be the cause, it is a bad habit, and we would like to see a general moving forward. A word cf encourage ment from the pastor now and then would help matters much. FOR SALE.
