THE PREVENTION OF SCROFULA. Xo.-iv. Perhapj the most important of thc measurcs which defend the system against the injurious in flucnce of cold wct, is the cold hath. Its use should be begun inimediatcly aftcr birth, using the watcr at first of such a temperature asthctcn der powcrs of life will at that timebear.andgrad ually rcducing the temperature. The proper timc of day is thc moming, immcdiatcly on rising. Its invigorating cffect is greatcst at that timc, and thc skin is not then moist by pcrspiration, nor the circulation cnfeebled by fatigue so as to make its use dangcrou's. So grcat is my confidencc in thc cfficacy of this mcasure that I believc, if it wcre pursued with evcry child born till the prcsent Eencrationof valetudinarians had passed from thc stage, tlie trade of doctors would bc shorn of half its prolits and morc than halt its rcproaches. Cold bathing improves cvcry function S. strength ens cvcry tibre in the system. And then the pleasurc of it It produccs comfortable fcclings by its dcanlincss, it makcs thc mind checrful, the body clastic, the sleep swcct, and tho whole life doubly plcasant. Try it, if you nevcr have, and yon will find its cficcts so exbilirating that you will straightway discovcr yourself attitudinizinf: and declaiming eloqucnce to the wash-bowl. In some instauccs the systcm is too much debilitatcd at once to bcar vcry cold water. This may bc known to be the case, in a particular instancc, if aiicr tlic use oi it tlic comlortablo glowof a Jsenl thy rcaction is not fclt, but in its place a scnsa tion of chillincss, languor and hcadachc. Hcrc you must bcgin with tepid watcr, and gradually rcduce the temperature. But this vcry condhion of hcalth cspeciallr calls for this rcgimcn. Such pcople take cold easily. J'ow this susccptibility to tiio imprcssion of cold, which, by the way, I bclicvc to bc one of tho f trongest proofs of pro clivity to scrofula, is ctfcctually removcd liy cold bathing, and the most conin on cause of diseasc in this climatc thcreby matcrially Icsscncd. In my acquaintancc there is not onesickly cliildwho has bccn subjectcd to this plan, nnd in many in stanccs I have known wcakly children w ho nccd cd a physician's care about half the timc, and whom it was thonght hardly possible to raisc, such children I have known" to become robust hcalthy under the use of the cold bath. Xo ap paratus is neccssary. A plunge bath, or a show cr bath arc pcrhaps thc bcst, but a fpongc or a towcl will very wcll answcr the purposc. Salt dissolvcd in the watcr will be found a good addi tion with wcakly pcoplc, it increases the invigo rating cffect of tlic cold bath, and saltitsclf, cxtcr nally or internally, is not without testimony to its cfiinicy in scrofula. -The Albany Orphan Asylum at its first cstab lMimcnt was locatcd in one of the most crowdcd strects in the city of Albany, whcrc fresh air and propcr cxcrcise wcre out of the qucstion and dcanlincss was ncxt to impossiMc. Bathing was pcrformcd in a perfcct mamierony oncc inther iretls. During thc first thrcc ycars in which this systcm was followcd, from four to six children wcre continually on thc sick Iist, and somcu'mes morc. A physician was nccded oncc, twicc or tliriec-a wcck, unifornily, dcatlis wcre frequent. Subscqucntly thc children wcre removcd into a larfrc, commodious apd excccdingly wcll vcntila tcd building, situatcd out of thc city. In addi lion to cold bathing eriry mornitiy, tlic children wcre rcquircd to take an abundance of cxcnic, werc confined but thrce or four hours daily in school, instcad of six or scvcn, and wcre, morco vcr, allonrcd mcat occasionallr, thoiijli thc prin cipal part of thc dict consistcd of milk, potatocs, Indian mnsh and plcnty of pood bread." Aficr thc new systcm was f.nrly adoptcd thc nurscry was cntircly vacatcd, and for more than two ycars no case of sickncss or dcath took placc. Thoc who came to thc Asylum wcakly bccame hcalthy and strong, and all wcre grcatly increascd in ac tivity, chccrfulncss and happincss." Pacts are so much morc cogentthanargumcnts that I will quote onc morc case of this particular regimen, from thc Amcrican Annals of Edu cation, for August 1S3G. The cxpcriinent was madc in a Gcrman school, when the dict consistcd of bread, mcat, milk, fruits and vegctablcs. Cold bu'hiny iras pmctiad daily. The tcacher statcs tlie rcsult as follows I am at prcsent the fos-tcr-fathcr of ncarly scvcnty young pcoplc, who wcre born in all thc varictics of climate from Lis bon to Moscow, nnd whoso carly cducation was ncccssarily vcry diirercnt. Thcse young mcn arc all hcalthy; not a pingla cruption is visiblc on thcir f.iccs; and thrce ycars ofton pass during which not a singlc one of thcm is confined to liis bcd; and in the twcnty ycars during which I havc bccn cnjagcd in this institution.not one pupillias dicd. Yct I am no physician. During tlic first tcn ycars of my rcsidcncc hcrc, no physician cn tercd my housc; and not till tlie numbcrofmy pupils was vcry much increascd, and I grcw anx ious not to ovcrlook anything in regard to thcm, did I bcirin to scck at all for medical advicc." Tlie propcr regulation of the temperature of thc body is all-important to tnc neaiui ot a scroi ulous pcrson. Thc deprtssing influence of cold i always injurious. Thc scnsation of chillincss is thc gcneral cvidcncc that this cflcct is having placc. A chill is thc warning that naturc givcs lliat the systcm is suffcring. To guard thispoint without dcbarring thc individual from air and cx crcise, it is neccssary that thc drcss should bc suf ficicntly warm and adaptcd to thc scason. It hould not bc too warm this interferes wi;h cx crciscs, and promotcs unduc pcrspiration, thcre by dcbilitating thc systcm generally, nnd, in par ticular, producing suclia relaxcd condiiion of thc skiu as increases the tcndcncy to cold. Evcry wcakly pcrson, and csjcci.illy thc scrofulous. in this climatc, should wcar flanncl next tbc skin, in wintcr, for its warmtb, in summer to countcr act atmosplierical changcs. Thevoico of cxpcri cnce is so singlc on this point that facts and nr uments may be sparcd. Thc fect should bckept dry, and cspccial aro bc takcn to avoid thc im prcssion of cold whcn atrcst or perspiring. Fee ble pcrsons aie very apt to take cold in slccp if cxposcd to currcnts'of cold air or not sufficicntly covercd. In regard to cxposing children to cold air, certain procautions should be uscd. If the child be bom in thc cold scason of thc ycar, hc should not bc carried ont till the warm wcatherof spring. If the child bcborn in summer hc should bc accustomed to out-door ainvith little delay: and the custora nccd not be btoken ofif whcn wintcr arrives. A favorablc change is often wrought in scrof non diseascs. and thcir dcvclopment in con stitutions jircdisposcd thcrcto prcvented. by res ideiicc in a warmer dimate. Patients cxhibit ing consumptive symptoms arc oftcn so dccidcd ly rclievcd by tliis"transfcr as to believc thcir dis easc mistakcn.an crror of which they arc in many cascs tco soon convinccd on their retum to a mire inhospitable latitude. On the othcr hand, nnd cs pccially when rcsortcd to too late, rcsiding in a warm climatc is often so inefBcacious in arrcsting tho progrcss of that complaint, that many have lost all confidence in its rcmedial powcrs. Some have indecd gope so far as to recommend a jour ncy to a coldcr climatc, the Labrador coast, "for cxample. Xow, in regard to that, tlic diyncss cquability of a climate are undoubtedly of quite as much importance as its temperature; and.of the two, it is not improbablc that a cold, dry nnd equablc air would be prefcrable to a moist and va riable thongh warm sky and I have no doubt that residencein Labrador during the summer sason wonld benefit.somc scrofulous individnals who had livcdina more relaxing atmosphcre. Bnt tliat a cold climatc is, per se, bttter for scrof ulous people than awarm one.is an idca that facts will not permit us to beliere. If Uiat wcre a iust opinion it onght to be true that the people of hot climatcs coming to a colder latitude are morc free from scrofulous disease thanathome. The contrary is the fact The black raee m this latitude suffer more from consumption and other scrofulous diseases than do the whites, whde in Africa that.class of diseascs are rarc Proofs might be multiplicd. We went quite arly in'the evenin', for Iwant cd to be there 'fore 'twas crowdcd. Ther hadn't nohody come when we got there, only thrce or four ladies, that was a git- tin thc supper ready. You know at thcm kind o' dcwins thcy always have a supper sot out for thc company. The congregation provides the inlertainmcnt ginerally, but in this placc the ministcr s wife has to find a sood sliarc on't. Aliss SSrantum found the tca and cofTee, and sugar and cream, and buttcr, and so forth. bonie o the ncighbors sent in cake and pies, and checse and biscuit. The Widder Grimcs and Charity was there, of r.ourse. They did n't go nigh the donation table for some time, and I was kind o' curus to know whether they'd brought anythins, so I watched 'em, and bymeby, I obscrvcd Charity go slily up, when she thouijht no body didn't see, and lay a little paper on the table. I had a curiosity to see what was in it, so as soon as I got a chance I took up the paper and peekcd iuto't, and lo and behold! there was tew skeins o thread did you ever? Widder Grimes is velItfT, but she's tew stingy to bc dcH cent, and. Charity's jest like her. Then there was ever so many belonging to othor denominations, that didn't bring nothing; they come to show their good will, to let folks see that they want bigoted and prei- udiccd, though they did differ in a relig- ious piut o' yiew, and to git their supper. And besides them.I noticed a greatmany that I never see before nobody knows where they comc from nor where they went tew. I gucss they must a ben raised up for thc occasion. And then ther was an awful sight o' children that straggled in from everj where. Doctor Lippincott, he was there, bowin' and scrapin' round as usual awfully anxious about everybo (y's hcalth and his wife, tcw, as much consamed as he was and their promisin' red-headed boy, and intercstin' dartar, Anny Mariar, with her six starchedskirts on takin' up more room than ary ten de cently drest girls in the room. The doc tor alwavs goes to all the donation parties forfifteen miles round, to make himself poppilar, but nobody knows of his ever ta kin' anything. On this occasion, Anny Mariar took a book-mark to Mr. Scrantum, with a thing on it that looked like a chop- pin'-knije, and a mess o' French nonsensc below it. But the greater part o thc per- formance was the seminary gals and their donation. Ther was twcnty-fivc on 'em, aud what do you 'sposethey fetcht? Why the liull kit aud cargo on 'em had cnnspi red togethcr and made a rag baby for little Adelinc Scrantum, and rigged it up in gauze and tinscl, aud they all come to gethcr aud biought that. Miss Pinchem, their tcacher, want there. She was sick orscmething. T gucss if she had a come. she'd a kept em a little straiter. Land o liberty I ncvcr sce such an actin' set o' crittcrs in alf my born days Thcy car ried on likc all possest. I sce some ou 'cm a flourishing round JefT he's always ready for a scrape, you know and 1 was afeard he'd git to carryin' on with 'cm, and I wouldn't a had him for anything, so 1 gin him a cautinn. JefTpromised tokeep clear on 'em hc generally docs as I want him tew. l'l! saj that inuch for JefTcr son, he was always good about mindin'. But it went hard with him todew it then hc was ripe for fun, and dctarmined tolct ofT the steam some way or other. So he looks round aud sees Charitj Grimes stuck up on the scttcc 'tother side o' the room. StifTas apoker and prim as a peapod you know what a starchcd up affected old critter she is. JefT went to school tcw hcr when he was little, and she snapped his cars aud cuffed him round. so he's always hated her likc pizen ever sincc. She's ben tryin' this twenly year to nit married and can t make it out. She d chased Squire Fuller iver sincc his wife died Squirc Fullcr got married about a month afore that and hcr unclc says he verily believes he did it in self-defencc, just to git rid o- Charity Grimcs shc bothercd him to death hc couldn t goout in com pany but what she'd contrive to hook on- to him. Charity puckered up Pher mouth and grinned, nnd says she Ycs, you was qintc a boy then ann 1 If ,T I.. was a mere cnuu mysen, cxcceuiugiy vouthful for a tcacher.' 'Well,' says JefT says hc, 'you haint altercd a spcck sincc j-ou hold your own amazingly you looked evcry bit as old tlie n as you do now but how do you fcel about these davsV 'Fecl!' says she, pricking up hcr cars, 'I fcel as well as com mon why shouldu't I V 'Excuse me,' says .TctT. 'I onlv axed bccause I didn't know but you felt ruthcr nonplussed, put to't for bisness as it wcre, sincc Squirc Fuller got married. 'Old feller's occcrpation's gone'now, I 'sposc as Shakspcaro says.' So shc got np and flounced out into the hall. Tlic foiks all giggled and secmcd wonderfu: tickled but Jeff, he looked round as astonishcd as could be, and says he I wonder what ails Miss Grimes. But if the fancied advantagcs of frco trade aro hypothetii-al and hard to be apprcciatrd, the argunicnts against its c-ontrary aro no less so: While England is raising a hundrcd. and this nation twenty-five millions of dollars through tarifTs laid on by frce trade throrists, we aro entcrtained l.y our long-haircd philos opher with thc followtng tliCbis "That a tarifT is unjust, bceausc it taxcs onc class to enrich anothcr." It is well known tliat two candidates have, so far, almost entirely cngrossed thc attention of the press, and that such papers especially as aspire to Icad in the raattcr, havo very gener- ally rangcd themsclves nndcr tho banner of cither Clay or Taylor. Judge McLcan has also been namcd, in this connection, but no very strong current has been put in motion in his favor. Indccd, itis hardly probable that his name will be scrious ly considcrcdby the Convention at all. Cor win has a few friends, in his own statc, who will, perhaps, givo him their votes, ai the Prcsidcntial nomince but he cannot, vcry likclv, c-ommand any considcrable support even from Ohio.
