Loss, $200,000 no insurance. The Pennsylvania Railroad Co. will begin running a regular daily fast mail train to Pittsburg. Cincinnati, Chicago, St. Louis and other points west and ■southwest, although tha Postmaster General says that he will not allow them to commence before the New York Central is ready. Colonel Scott tells the Postmaster General that his postal cars will be ready for the mail on Monday next. There has been shooting at the Mon treat cemetery, but no one was killed. At Milwaukee in a late gale, the bark Tanner in trying to make port was soak. The crew were reeeued, but the captain was drowned. In the New York stock market there bos been a rise in gold and a decline in foreign exchange. Judge L. Woodruff of the United ■States Circuit Court in New York, died yesterday, A cattle disease has broken out among several herds of cattle near Aticram lead mines, New York, and all have died. The Red Cloud Investigating Com mittee, which are looking into the mat ter of alleged Indian frauds, are evi dently doing thorough work, and are determined to fiud out the facta in the case from competent witnesses. The California Pioneers in New York called a meeting there on Monday evening to give expressions of their sympathy for the misfortunes which befell the late W. C. Ralston. Revenue Supervisor Hamley, of New Vork, is ordered to San Francisco to relieve Supervisor Foulke, who is ordered to Richmond, Virginia. Mrs. Norton’s motion for a new trial at Santa Barbara yesterday was over rated, and she was sentenced to im prisonment for life. I At this time Irwin for Governor has 58,301; Phelps, 30,165, and Bid wen, 28,116; total vote 116,882. Irwin as against both has a majority of 280. Tax Borax Miner of the 4th instant has the following relative to the dis covery of the remains of a man sup posed to have perished on the desert in Esmeralda county; One of these life endings which seems to lend a special horror to the traveler in these far sway mining districts came to light On Monday evening last. Mr. J. C. Cruikshank, who corse into Belmont by way of Silver Peak, in company with W. W. Niles, Esq., informed ns that they had passed the body cf a man laying on the desert in eight of Columbus and the Pacific Borax Works. They Stopped and lookfd a| the body, and found that the nose and eyes were gone and that decomposition haded* vanned so far that Identification would t be impossible.” Thkbs is nothing new from the seat of war. This is probably owibg to the fact that it has no seat, and has less reality than the materialized spirit of Katie King. The horses seized by the Eureka volunteer* are being returned to their owners, aad nothing like a hostile demonstration is reported from any direction. The Eureka Sentinel aeya the lndiorousaem of mistaking the kUMMant roasting ef pine-nuts by the frugal natives for the signal fires of a ■hostile enemy hi tea exornciatingly fnuny to be endnru4 without immi nent peril of bunting. CiVIN AMD RBfldtTS. -r-r *3 From the result of the InteslecMfe Id California the Democrat* can cobtA with a certainty on that State swilling j ths Democratic majority next year in the Preaidantial contest. Irwin has a majority ore* both of bis competitors combined, and had Phelps alone been the opposition candidate, Irwin's ms* joritjv wonld hare ranged from tf,000 to 20,000. Of the 27,000 rotes received by Bidwell 16,000 were from the Demo cratic party, which under no circum stances could have been received by Phelps, while from 5,000 to 10,000 voters of Republican proclivities, who supported the Independent ticket would have voted for Irwin if they had not had a candidate of their own. The Independent party in Califor nia have bfen disbanded and the Re publican party utterly routed and demoralized. It is not true, as some journals claim, that the suocsss of the Democratic party was due to the Inde pendent movement. It was due alone to the great change in public sentiment which inaugurated a revolution last year. The people are moving upon ths breastworks of the enemy all along ths line and nothing can stay ths flood of popular indignation until official corruption, speculation and frauds are crashed out. The galvanized Repub licanism of to-day, headed by Grant and his servile tools has become a stench in the uostrils of the great mass of intelligent* honest thinking voters of the country. To the Democracy they look for deliverance. In that great conservative and national party is cantered the fondest hopes and moat cherished interests of a great nation. The kaell of Radicalism has been souuded, its putrssent carcass already fills the air with deadly effluvia, and it simply remains for the people to bury or cremate the corrupt copse. Its death marks the inauguration of a new era of national progress, honest administra tion and good government, unbiased by sectional prejudice. Its epituph should be “Here lies the remains of the once great proud and progressive Republi can party, killed by corrupt rings and an overdose of Grantism.” A correspondent of the New York Express writes as follows from the White Mountains: “The Beecher excitement has quite died. out. At first there was a great rush to see him, and hear him, but now the fun is over, and laat Sunday bis entire audience did not exceed 2,000 people. He is to return to Brooklyn this week, much to the displeasure of the Barrens, who keep the hotel where he is staying. They have given him his board and $50 a week to stay and preach at their house. He thinks that they are making too much money out of him, and demands that they pay him $200 a week. The Barrens say this is too much, and Beecher says, All right, gentlemen, I go home this week.’ If you db, we will sue you for breach of contract; for, Mr. Beecher, you agreed to stay till the third Sunday in September.’ Beecher coolly replies. Sue away, if you like. I should think that after what you have seen of my success in the law business, that you would know better than to undertake a suit against me.’ The Barrens are furious. They say they have done everything for Beecher; that they defended him in the newspapers, and have petted him always. But they can’t help them* selves. When Mr. Beecher makes up his mind to go, he will start if a whole regiment opposes. JbbYbbson Davis couldn’t accept Mr. James Redpath’s invitation, to lacture in Boston, on a specified date the ooru ing seaeon, but it is quite probable h* Will speak there at some other time daring the next few months. In re sponse to the seaarano* that ha would receive a respectful reception in Bos ton, he wrote: I did not do the citizens of Boston the injustice of snp^ posipg they would do otherwise than listen quietly so far os they *chose to hear anyone who came by invitation to addraaa them, and be who under snob circumstances, would be offensive to bts andience would be wanting in judg ment ae well ae good breading. EASTEhN DISPATCHES [SPECIAL TO THE SILVER STATE.] New Yoke, 8ept. 10. The Herald's special from Philadel phia gives in full anonymous letters addressed to Mr. Ross, by the abduc tors of his son Charley. The letters demand money before restoring the child, and say that putting detectives on their track will only defeat Ross' own plans. If any approach is made to the place where the lad is bidden it would be a signal for his instant assas sination. Money alone can only fetch him ont alive. In a letter dated July 6th, the abductors demand $90,000 for the child’s release, and they ask Mr. Ross for an answer to their letter per sonally. In a subsequent letter they submit a form of answer to be used by Mr. Ross in the letter, viz. Ross will come to terms, or Ross will not come to termB.” The letters are by tarns explanatory and argumentative. Henry A, Hoffman, a lad 16 years of age, who lately fell heir to some thirty thousand dollars worth of his parent's property, having fallen into bad company, became so dissipated that he cannot take care of himself or his pro perty. He has been taken care of by a society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, and the Court has placed his property in the hands |of a surrogate for protection. A jury of fifteen citi zens pronounce the boy a habitual drunkard. Chicago, Sept. 10. The storm of last night in this region was one of exceptional violence, and in telligence of accidents and disasters are coming in from all directions, though owing to the damaged condition of the telegraph wires full detaiU cannot be re ceived until late in the day. For forty eight hours Btorms have been raging throughout the northwest, and yester day afternoon a heavy rain set in, ac companied by a high wind and great electric display. The water fell almost incessantly throughout the night, and some serious damage was done in the city by stoppage of sewers and conse quent overflowing of the streets. ThiB damage, however, is believed to be slight, and it is thought that the disas ters are confined to the railroads and the shipping on the lakes. The full force of the storm was felt, and the sea was higher than at any other time with in the past two years. The wind blew almost a hurricane, and it is feared a number of vessels were unable to with stand the fury of the storm. At 11:30 last night the scow Cumberland went against the breakwater about two miles south of the harbor and was badly stove in, and is now sunk at the point where the storm struck her. She was twenty miles at sea, but soon lost all her sails and drifted rapidly ashore. Captain R. St. Clair and three sailors comprising the entire crew were saved with the utmost difficulty. The beach at the point of disaster was thickly strewn with lumber and other debris. The schooners Mann and Oesine reached here before the worst of the storm minds most of their canvas. This morning sail vessels oan be seen off the harbor waiting for the sea to sub side, so that tugs can venture out, and it is believed that some of them are waterlogged and in a sinking condition. Later reports will undoubtedly bring intelligence of some serious disasters along the west shore. FOREIGN NEWS. London, Sept. 11. Beflect on the great object to be attained. He, wbo loves the town will not allow himself to hesitate for one single second of time in deciding. Look around you and at once the question assumes a position of transcendent, importance both iu the principles and the consequences it in volves. It is a momentous question for posterity as well as for the present, it is the freedom of minds now enthralled, the polishing at the present of intel lects that will in the time to come con trol the happiness and prosperity of Winnemucca, and in the manner of the discharging of this sacred trust, much depends—in fact all—on the line of action we see fit to pursoe in connec tion with this important ques.ion the erection of a public hull. An institution of ibis nature baring for its object tbe advancement of mo rality and tbe good of the citizen, is essential to tbe prosperity of every branch of business and to all condi tions of society. Honesty and fearlessness in the dis charge of duty is the offspring of a well balanced mind. Cau we reap tbe har vest unless we sow the seed V We must prepare the soil, enrich it so that when we-plant the teuder shoot, the life and sustenance it receives from our cars and affections will when it ar rives at the age of maturity bear fruit in abnnduuce, rich and rare in quality. Ouly by reason and conviction can we hope to secure the desired end aimed at. Permit reason to sesame full sway, and logically take hold of thismeasuie; weigh well the for and against; permit no prejudice to interfere, and. convic tion ultimately rushes ou enlisting the sympathies ot the people in the exer cise of active benevolence. Damoesoos.—Rmd Supervisor Bell sends us the following relative to the bridge and the levee, which he consid ers dangerous in their present condition: “The bridge over the Ilnmboldt and the culverts and levee are iu a bad con dition- I examined them yesterday. The soldiers packed away and burned the sagebrush that was pot at the aides of the levee to hold it np and strength en it. I have spent np to date about $175 of my own money on the roods in this district, and I am willing to spend more. It is not safe for heavy teams to cross the bridge and levee in their present condition. There muet be something done, and I think I will hove to get a subscription list and see what the people will do. Pat. Bell, Rood Supervisor. Owing to change In the road laws mode by the last Legislature no pro vision has been mode for applying a portion of the poll-taxes collected in this district for road purposes. The result is the Hnpervisor has been re pniriog bridges at bis own expense, w ithout any guarantee that the amouut mo expended will be refunded. Indians in Wax Paint.—Conductor Benson, who came down from Toano on yesterday's passenger train, informs us that white men stated at Hum boldt Wells, yesterday, that about seventy Indiana, armed aud painted, crossed the railroad at Moore'a, eight miles above the Welle, night before last, going in southerly direction. The number was probably exaggerated, and if they crossed in the night, It is difficult to understand how it waa ascer tained that they were painted. In theaa exciting times soma peoples eyes are like microeoopee, tkey magnify a great dsaL LKTTM PROM OORIKJCOPU. ImmlMr Arriviaf-BalMiagt Mag -Uaadng aad ftadag. Gobnocopsa, 8ept, 8. Edibos 8ilv»m Stats:—Since my last but little has transpired worthy of note. The qaeation of bank resumption somewhat yet attracts the attention of the citizens and all are hoping for the best. Plenty of lumber is arriving in town now. Almost every day hoge loads oodi8 in from Winnemuccn, Pali sade and Elko, and the two yards—one kept by L. I. Hogle and the other by Mr. Smith—are now pretty well sup plied. THI MINKS. I understand from pretty good source that they have lately struck some good ore in the Hussey. The Leopard works its usual force, but they are not taking out their usual amount of ore, on account of the want of crashing capacity, but are developing the mine, so that when the mill does start, which will be about the first of Octobei, they will have all the ore in sight that they can work for S( long time to come. Pay-day has not come as yet, but people appear not to mind it much but go along with their im provements as though nothing had happened. By the time snow flies, Eeiuhart, A. D. Mecbstn and Mooaer will have their I I HE PROOF STORES Done. These will be snbstsntisl and permaneut improvements. Charley Corooran has got into his splendid new restaurant on Main strset, and by close attention to bpsineas is becoming the chief caterer to the wants of the eatiug pnblio in the whole place. A SAD ACCIDENT Occurred on Sunday last about 25 miles from here on the Mountain City road, which resulted in the death of Thomas Haley, a teamster, driving team for Tbntupaon Ashbury of this place. He waa driving a six horse team down a steep hill with a load of six cords of wood, when the break gave way and precipated the load forward on the teain. He attempted to get oft bis wheel horse but his foot caught in the stirrup and threw him down by the side, and under the wagon, and the wheels passed over him iufiicting fatal injuries; he lived aboathalf an hoar. His body was bronght to town for burial, and was buried on Monday last in our villiege cemetery. All the teamsters and many other citisens turned out to the funeral. Deceased was a native of Philadelphia, about 34 years old, where he has an aged mother living. I also have to record the death of Dr. Denney's infant child, which died last Monday of congestion of the brain. AMUSKMKNTS, Sociables and deuces have plenty, as is always the ease in new mining cam pa. Last Friday night, on the oc casion of Corcoran opening his new restaurant, he gave a dance at Hogle’s Hall, which was quite a sucoess. AU the elite of the town wae there. The music by Martin, Holmes and Mathews' string band was superb, and all asy that tba sapper gotten up by Corcoran was more than splendid, far outdoing %ny thing of the kimf ever gotten up in this section of theoountry.* TBS BACKS. The race cams off on Saturday; Mathews’ bay this time was badly beaten by Wiltiard's brown. Another race comes off next Saturday. Hunters are out almost every day killing the gams in the oonntry, Steve From was j out the other day nnd cams across s young BLACK BKAK Which he suooeeded in killing, and brought it to town; it would weigh about sixty-five pounds. He sold it to D. Greyson, who dressed it aad bung it at the shop; that night someone stole it, but H being spoiled returned it next morning; but wo did not get any bear meat. David GreyaoB haa just moved into hia fine new ebop on Ella atreot. It ia as fine a batcher shop aa there is in almost any inland town. I do not think of anything more at present ao I will close. Yours, 8. M. H. i n. Abbtvsix—Mrs. Busan B. Wilkemoo, a widowed sister of Mias Lydia Baronin, assistant school teacher, arrived from the East last evening, and expects to make Wtoemnooa her home for some time. She desires to sagge a olaaa in instrumental music. Tauwi Fsopswtt.—W« learn from the County Assessor that the taxable property of the ooanty foots op abont $60,000 more than it Waa hmt year. Considering the reduced price of cat tle bad the fact that about 30,000 sheep have been driven out of the county in the last year, this is a fair showing. The railroad, are understand, haa been aaeeaaed at the usual rate—$6,000 per mile, so that that the increase is not attributable to that source. The roll ing stock, however, is assessed at a higher figure than heretofore. .i A Man Shot.—Day before yesterday as the train which conveyed the troops up the road stopped bt Carlin, an em ploye of the railroad oompany named Barnes, who resides at Carlin, wLile examining a soldier’s revolver, acci dentally discharged it, and shot him self ifl the breast. The ball entered the breast near the right nipple, and in flicted a serious, if not fatal wound. Dr. Meiggs, of Elko, who attended him, has bop*:- of his reoovery. Goni East.—T. V. Julieu and M. Siegel left to-clay for tha Atlantic States. The former goes as a representative to tha Grand Lodge of I. O. O. F., and tha latter on a visit to friends in Wheel ing, West Virginia, where he intends to capture a bride before he returns. Bkkf Uattlk Coming.—A drove of two hundred and fifty bead of beef cat tle from John Catalow's herds in Idaho will arrive here to-morrow for ship ment to the Ban Francisco market. School Meeting.—Remember the meeting at the school house to-night. Professor Kennedy and others are announced as speakers and everybody invited to attend. A Shoe king Scene at n Spelling Match. [From the Naxbvilk Banner.] On last Saturday night Shady Grove, four miles from Union City, was in the full enjoyment of a spelling match. The ooniest bad continued to grow more aud more excitiug from its coDimeocement. The audience were intently engaged iu looking at the claaa.uow fast narrowing down to a few, when they uere startled out of their seats by the sharp and sudden report of a pistol in the midst of them. This waa followed by still another report. The utmost excitement immediately ensued. It waa aoertained that a young man named Frank Williams had come up the aisle to the pew on which James Turner was seated with a young lady had placed the muzzle of a revolver to the back of his head and fired, the ball passing through the cranium. Turner fell forward upon the floor a corpse. Williams then shot at his fallen form again, the ball striking the leg of an other and producing a slight wonnd. It was stated that Turner bad seduced Williams's sister, and that she was six months eaerinlt, and her brother had pleaded with Turner to save her from disgrace by marrying her. Williams bad called him out dI the house and re monstrated with him, telling him at last that if he did not lead her to the altar he would kill him. Turner re sponded that be would not marry her, and that he was not afraid. The 6eqoel of that conversation waa Turner’s death. We ore informed that Williams* sister waa the third yonng Sirl in the neighborhood he had sa uced, and that Turner bad remarked that he would not rest satisfied until he had ruined four more. W. F.
