DAILY SILVER STATE. Tuesday.... .July ‘JO, 1875 SUMMARY OP THIS MOBNlNO’8 DISPATCHES. Gold was down to 114 in New York yesterday, the lowest iu three months. Legal tenders are firm at 87^ buying and 88% selling. A dispatch from Washington says Attorney-General Pierrupont has spent much of his time in making an exhaust ive review of the C'horpcning case, and it is understood that he has reported against it. Secretary of War Belknap, General Marcy aud J. William Myers arrived at Salt Lake last eveniug on their way to the Yellowstone and Upper Missouri. The shooting match at Wimbledon between members of the House of Lords and the House of Commons was won by the latter. The yacht Effort, under sixteen tons, which left Fleetwood, England, May 29, arrived yesterday at St. John, New Brunswick. The Washington Evening Star learns on what it regaids as good authority that the President has recalled the re quest for the resignation of Judge Fisher as United States Attorney for the District of Columbia. Tho disturbances iu Hersogvina are believed to be serious. The insurgents are threatening death to all who refuse to join them. The contest tor the Albert prizes was finished yesterday. Sir Henry Halford won the first prize, scoring 98 out of a possible 108. Colonel Gildersleeve second, with a score of 92. So far the American riflemen have shown them selves better marksmen than the Eng lish, and their skill and accuracy in shooting creates much applause and astonishment. The Carllsts have abandoned the Biege Kaycorda. The Catholic benevolent societies of the District of Columbia meet Friday to make arrangements for celebrating he centennial of Daniel O’Connell. The returns of tho Bavarian elec tions indicate that the electoral college will consist of seventy-seven Liberals and seventy-nine Ultrumontanes. The defalcation of Jackson in Louis ville, Ky., has turned out, on full in vestigation which is now completed, to be $35,000. It is thought he has been stealing for several years. General John McDonald and Colonel J. A. Joyce, of St. Louis, have been in dicted in connection with whisky frauds. A man named Walker is in custody at Northampton, in England, charged with being the husband of four wives, all of whom are now living. He went to Wrexham some year i ago aud mar ried a widow, with whom he resided for a considerable time. At length, however, ho abandoned her, and was not heard of until a few days ago, when a police officer visited Northampton to gather evidence of the marriage, Walk er having been apprehended at Not tingham, after marrying a woman from that town, and having already three wives. The Wrexham woman, it ap pears, was his second spouse, and the first came from Kbyl. A large and elegant tea shop was opened in St. Louis about a month ago. The establishment was so hand Bome and the prices so low that the sales were enormous from the 6tavt. Yet one morning the place was closed, and later on the same day the tea mer chant’s creditors took possession. An examination showed that the chests re maining contained only sawdust. The merchant had obtained §10,000 worth of tea on credit for a month, had sold the whole of it at less than its actual value, and had gone away with the money. Senbtor Jones of Nevada, A. T. Stewart of New York, and J. D. Congh lau and George Brown of California, hare bought a piece of laud at Delord aud Annunciation streets, New Orleans, whereon they intend to build an arti ficial ice factory 150 feet long, 110 feet wide and more than 50 feet high, to cost §125,000. They have an ico fac tory in California, one in Chattanooga, one neaily finished in Galveston, and are about to build ouo at Atlanta.
Tub opinions of the misanthropical rest upon this very partial basis—that they adopt the bad faith of a few as ev^ idence of tho worthlessness of all. THE NEW SENSATION. It is a fortunate circumstance that a new sensation has arisen to fill the vacuum created by the disagreement of the jury, and the consequent eud of the Brooklyn scandal suit. The Tilton Beecher affair divided communi ties into two very nearly equally di vided parties—the mints, who behoved Beecher wouldn’t if he could; and the sinners, who thought that he would and did; and the new sensation bids fair to cause a similar division between skeptics who think it impossible, and the credulous who hold that it can be done. We refer, of course, to the Kee ley motor, which ut the present time is creating such a htir in the scientific world, and with the latest reports of the progress of which every Eastern journal is freighted. A scie-ntist named Alfred Arnold, in the New York bun ol last Tuesday scouts the idea of the motor being what its discoverer claims. lie says that any pretense to create motive power by only mechanical means is monstrously absurd to every ptersou acquainted with the laws of motion; and to say that one formed of any physical thing can, within itself and of itself, increase itselt a hundred fold, is asserting an effect without a cause— creating something out of nothing—a self-evident, universally admitted im possibility. He does not believe that the Keely motor will within thirty days, or thirty years, run a traiu of cars Irom New York to Philadelphia— a bucket of cold water furnishing power fur tbo trip. io ollset the opinion of tins skeptical scientist, we have seen the view of an other scientific gentleman, who oc cupies the position of Chief Engineer of the United States Navy, on the wonderful discovery. Iu a private let ter to his brother, who is a resident of this county, ho says that the Keely motor will do all that its discoverer claims and more. Ho says that he has seen the machine, and that it kept up a pressure of ten thousand pounds to the square inch for hve weeks, without heat, chemicals, electricity, galvanism or anything else but air and water. He says, too, that the machine for util izing this power is not perfected, and that all talk of running trains of cars within thirty days or six months with the new motor, is all moonshine, us it will not be publicly exhibited until its full power is known, practically ap plied and patented. The letter contain ing this information we have been per mitted to read, and no less a personage tbun the Chief Engineer of the United States Navy states therein that he has seen and examined the Keely motor, and feels confident that it will do all that its discoverer claims; in fact, that it is the greatest discovery of the age. Two young roughs in Memphis coufted the same girl, and upon her choice between them arose a fight. The rejected lover attacked his rival with a knife, cutting a deep gash across his cheek and nose. The wound was a long time healing, and it left a disfiguring scar. Having recovered from his wound the sufferer asked tho girl to se lect a day for the wedding hut she coldly informed him that she could never marry a man with such an ugly scar on his face, and decided to accept tho other fellow. The Chinese ship trade dollars to India to pay lor opium, and these pop ular pieces are cut into rupees, which are stamped with tho native characters on one sido and tho value of tho piece on the other. The trade of China with India in opium exceeds all other com modities, as is shtiwn by the reports of tho Chinese Custom service. The amount returued for the last eight years, exclusive of tho amount smug gled, which would probably double it, iit 97,440,930 pounds. A few days since a farmer was tell ing in our hearing that he had planted an aero and a half of potatoes, and he feared they would be destroyed by the potato bugs. “Are the plants up yet?” asked a bystander. “No,” re plied the farmer, “hut the darned bugs are sitting on every hill waiting for them.” The Punamiut News of the 14th in stant chronicles the arrival at that place of Senator Stewart and Sam Jones, Superintendent of the Crown Point mine. The Golden Rule. fFrom the Detroit Free Press.] What’s this boy doing here—this innocent-looking, wbite-Laired boy?” Gittiu’ up u dog light,” exclaimed Bijah. My son, is this true?” I never said a word—the other boys got up the tight!” wailed the lad. I do not know what I can do with you. We keep a cross-cut saw here to saw boys in two, but it is Saturday morning and I don’t want to muss up the station house. I suppose we-” The boys lied on me!” exclaimed the boy, trembling all over. They did, eh! Now, boy, tell mo the solemn truth—did you have hold of either dog?” No, sir—you may kill me if I did!” Did you say sickem?” No, sir—no!” Didn’t you bet five marbles against three jaw breakers that the red dog would win?” No—no!” Well, boy, this is a serious case, but I am going to ouerlook it. I think you have told me tho truth, but you hud no business there. In tho distant future you waut to remember that it is four times better to pull weeds in the garden than to attend a dog tight.’. I will, sir.” And remember to keep truth in your handkerchief pocket all through life. One ounce of truth is worth more in the wholesale market than forty tons of lies.” Yes. sir.” The boy reached the door to encoun ter the baud who marched, him off singing: Oh. bury I’artbob mew out in tbe woods, In a beautiful hole in tliegri and.
