A dispatch from Portland, Oregon, states that a party of Central Pacific Railroad officers arrived there yester day afternoon by special train. Expec tation is rnuniug high that the visit to Oregon will have a beneficial effect upon the affairs of the proposed Win nemncca Railroad, and perhaps decide the question of building the road. The Oregonian, alluding to the visit of the Central Pacific officers,. says: "Cer tain capitalists of New York have of fered to build the road from Portland to Winneuincca iu three years on two conditions. First, That the people of Oregon subscribe $1,500,000 of the capital stock, to be paid when the road is completed. Second, That the Win nemucca road shall obtain guarantees for twenty years from the Directors of the Central Pacific, that the latter shall give the people of Oregon precisely the same rates of freights and fares from Ogden to Winnemucca as they give or may hereafter givo to California.” What transpired at the conference be tween the Central Pacific officers and representatives of the proposed road has not yet reached us, but it is quite probable that arraugemeuts have beeu, or will be made, satisfactory to all par ties coueorue 1, aud that work will be commenced on the road some time this year. THE TOUflTII IN CIlimcnibLL COUNTY. Patriotism In the Desert—All lh» Cltlr.ein A»«embled—The Exerclae* And Speakers. Stillwater, July 6, 1875. Editor Silver State Churchill county ha? had her celebration of the anniversary of our country’s indepen dence, and a general good time. On Saturday, the 3d, the citizens of the couuty assembled almost unanimously at the picnic ground on the Upper Sink, and made preparation for an OLD FASHIONED CELEBRATION. The grounds are, it is safe to say, as pleasant and comfortable for any such gatherings ns any in this portion of the State. They are not so high toned ns Bower's Mansiou” or “Treadways,” but for comfort ns iu the way of shady arbors, running brooks, greeu grass and sparkliug wa. teis, they cannot be excelled or equaled anywhere iu this sagebrush country. The citizeus of the county had sent for and received a very nice flag from San Fraucisco, at a cost of about one hun dred dollars, nnd its glorious furls of red, white and blue floating over the beautiful grove of cottonwood and weeping willow, were iudeed a beauti ful and soul-inspiring contra,t to the alkali flats and sandy deserts of Nevada. After the arrival of quite a large dele gation of ladies nnd gentlemen from Wadsworth, the exercises of the day commenced. It was near 11 o’clock when the audience was called to order by the President of the Day, Mr. Hill, our ex-Senator, who made some very appropriate remarks, nud introduced the Reader of the Day, who read the Declaration of Iudej>eudeuee, after which declamations aud recitatious by some fifteen school children, all of whom had their peices perfectly and did exceedingly well. The children j of this county deserve praise and credit for their accomplishments, as well as the parents for the unusual interest they take in educating them. Mss Ida Kanyon, who has for some years been attending school in Yirgiuiu City, also favored the audience with an appro priate recitation, illustrative of the sac rifice and Bufferings of our boys iu blue and grey,,' who in the late great conflict fought aud died for what each termed their country's welfare and prosperity. A good dinner was served free for ull at two o'clock, and aguiu at four o’clock the President INTBODCCED THE OBATORS. lion. Lemuel Alleu and Willard H. A. Pike, Esq., who were chosen speak ers of the day. Mr. Allen's speech was a well written and appropriate dis course. He spoke of the purpose and dutyot American citizens upon sacu a day a.s that, aud theu at some length regarding the relations and common i interests of capital and labor, saying that their interests were common aud should be mutual, that if either held control over a county the common in terests of the people would become harassed aud fraught with civil dis cord and usurpatiou of power. Mr. Pike was nest called upou, and spoke extempore in a clear voice and to some extent. He alluded to the associations that were linked iu with that day, also to the gratitude which we should have for our fathers, for their geuerous acts aud uoble deeds. He theu referred to the character of our Government, of the representation, the like of which no other natiou could boast. He thanked Ueaveu that we have uo imUSHIF OF TITLES UKBK, That the poorest boy that walked the streets of our great cities had equally as good chance as the sou of a Sena tor of hlling the President's chair. That the people ruled, that we make Presi dents, Senators, Governors; that it was yoar duty to watch with the strictest vigilance for any danger that might be fall our country or cause its ruin. He referred to Greece aud Home, with their bright prospects, and how they were conquered by their owu factious, ami that we had their example to protit by. lie theu spoke of the surprising growth aud prosperity of our owu country, aud of the progress of me chanical arts, lu Bpeakiug of the abol ishment of slavery, ho baid that the South was just as sincere in the belief that slavery should exist us the North was determined that it should not; that one donned the suit of blue and j the other tbe suit of gray, and all i formed themselves into line and went rushing to the tield of action iu n cause as sacred and to the oue us holy to the other. He spoke of education as the foundation of all progress und Ameri can liberty. TO AT IT WAS THK LIFB BLOOD OF OUR NATION, And illustrated the benefits of ft free system of education by comparing the oast and present condition ot couutues where it does not .exist with the pros perity of our own. At the close, he as well as Mr. Allen, was heartily cheered. In me evening, and until midnight, all enjoyed themselves by tripping the light fantastic toe.” Crops are looking well, and nil are now engaged in gathering the harvest. It is reported that a rich veiu of quartz has been discovered east of Stillwater, assays running from $250 i to $2,500 per ton. Modkstl's. An Hour ot the Detroit Central Police Station. [From the Detroit Free Press My husband is sick you know,” 6aid Mary Shaw, as she came out. He is, eh?” Yes, ou his dying bed. Last night after the doctor went away, he took me by the hand, and says he, Mary I haven’t got over one day more to live.' He may be dead by this time.” Mary,” says His Honor, lifting up his spectacles, "this is the season of the year for greens, isn’t it?” Yes Your Honor.” Well, look at me, Mary, and see if there is auything cowslippy or horse rad ishy about me.” No, Your Honor.” And yet you expect me to believe that story, Mary. I’ve sent you to the house of correction three times during the last year; know that you are a sin gle woman, and it grieves me to hear you go on with such a yarn. Don’t you know that truth is mighty, and must prevail.” She bung her head. It is, womau. Falsehood is dark ness, but truth shines through it like a silver ten-ceut piece stickiug out ut a saud-bauk. The charge is drunken ness, and I really wish you would come right out and tell me the truth.” I will sir; I wasu't drunk!” "Great alligators! but here’s four witnesses!” I didn’t bring ’em here!” No; the officer did, and all of them saw you drunk judge, will you believe them before vou will uie?” I will!" And you’ll send me up?” I will.” Can it be possible. Judge?” It can, and it is. I make it three months. This will take in the circus season, Fourth of July, and the steam boat excursions, and all the strawber ries aud cream you get this year wou,t affect your health.” Judge, you deserve to be murdered for this!"
