daily silver state. Tuesday.April Id, 1N?.> A WORTHY CIEST. Major-General Crook, wLo bns been transferred from Arizona to tbe De partment on the Platte by the War Department, is in San Francisco. Last evening bis presence was formally recognized in tbe city by a moonlight parade of the Second Brigade of tbe State Militia, and a banquet by tbe citizens at tbe Lick House. I be an nouncement of tbe intended honor to a gallant soldier in tbe metropolis of tbe Pacific States led tbe Virginia Chroni cle to ask what General Crook has done that be should be feted and champngned, and tbe citizen soldiery ordered out to do him honor?” A full history of tbe exploits of tbe Gen eral in •Northern California, Oregon, Idaho, Nevada and Arizona, States and Territories to which San Francisco owes its prosperity, would fill a large sized volume, but for tbe purpose of satisfying tbe Chronicle that be is a worthy guest, aim enuueu 10 iuc respect of the people of Northern Nevada and Idaho as well as San I rttn cisco, a brief allusion to his services in this State will, we hope, suffice. After the discovery of gold and silver in Idaho Territory, the main thoroughfare between San Francisco and the new mines, then as now, crossed the Humboldt at Winuemucca. It was infested with hostile Indians who plundered and burned freight wagons, murdered the drivers and tre quently attacked and butchered travel ers. This continued for several years, and until-General Crook in person as sumed command of a military expedi tion to the Indian country. He pene trated the fastnesses of Southeastern Oregon and Northwestern Nevada, and by an active cuuipuigu ot a tew months duration subiftled the l’iutes and Ban nocks, who were then leagued agaiust the whites, so effectually that thW at price# wbitb defy competition. LOCAL INTELLIGENCE The County Debt.—The total in debtedness ot Humboldt county uu the 5th instant as perAudilors’ liepurt was $o7,yti3 do. *>t this uuiouut $50,OOU is bonded, the bonds drawing interest at the rat*; of J8 percent, per annum. The unpaid interest on these bouds, at the d tto of the report, was $4, (Jot), making the bonded debt and interest $54,U50. Ttie balance of the debt, which amounts to $13,913 30, is in outstanding warrants drawing interest at the rate of ten per ceut. per annum. On the 1th of January, 1873, the total indebted!)* ss oi the county amounted to $0,001 75. Since then the Court-house •win built, which added $.50,000 to the indebtedness of the county. Exclusive, however, of the Court-house, the debt has been gradually increasing since January, 1873, and since that time $7,252 55 lias been added to the num ber cf outstanding warrants. Under these circumstances the Commissioners could not reduce the rate of taxation, as many believed they would, at the last meeting of the lionrd. A Gray Eagle. Last Sunday an Engle was captured near Buffalo Station by the driver of the Idaho stage. The eagle, in making a swoop after prey, struck the telegraph wire, and stunned by the shock fell to the ground apparently lifeless and was immediately captured by the driver who happened along at that particular time. He is now encaged with a raven in front of Toltuan and Ivory’s Saloon. Emigrants. Thirty-five cars of emigrants are reported as having left Ogden to day on special trains. To meet the requirements of the unprece dented emigration, cars have to be sent to the front on express time. Yester day a special train, consisting exclu sively of emigrant cars, left here for Ogden, and another similar train left Truckee this morning. Eaolk —rrom John Hunks, who is here on jury duty, we learn that the Eagle mill, in Spring Valley, which has recently been changed from a dry to a wet crusher, started up last week on ore from the Eagle miue. lie says they arc now working the ore ex clusively for gold, and that so far as is ascertained it averages $25 per ton. Kino Lost.—A fine amethyst ring with gold setting was lost on Saturday last. The loser remembers having been at the Postoffice, Robinson’s bath house, the Court-house, Humboldt Re duction Works and the Lafayette Hotel on the day mentioned. The finder will coufer a favor and be suitably rewarded by leaving the ring at this office. Mobk Emiobanth.
