DAILY SILVER STATl i. Moniluy April K. 1S75 COXTBA DICTIOXS. All those stories about big pumps nrnl heavy pumping machinery on the Comstock are false. The territorial Enterprise of Saturday, April Id, says the mine is dry, and many of the com panies have to purchase water for daily use.” Thisseeins incredible, but, as the Enterprise makes the assertion in an argument agaiust the Sutro luu nel, of course it is true. No man, not excepting Senator Stewart in his speech against the Swamp Land Act, was ever nearer right than the Enterprise editor in his arguments against the tunnel. It does seem a little strange though that an item iu the local columns of the Enterprise of the same date, should say that “the water has risen iu the Gould Curry shaft to a considerable distance above the l,70U-l'out level,” but there it is nevertheless. It must be a mistake of the reporter, as all those items are about pumping from the lower levels of the Comstock. Doesn’t the editor say that those deep workings are dry, and that no tunnel is necessary to drain them. Doesn’t he even intimate that water is worth as much as an inferior quality of whisky on the lower workings, and lias to be purchased for daily use? Doesn’t he even boast of his natural qualifications by insinuatiug that all who argue that the completion of the Sutro Tunnel will laeiiitate the working of the Coins ock mines are making asses of themselves, thereby plainly proving that nature has saved him the trouble of doing so However as these direct contradictions iu the columns of the Enterprise may be susceptible of explanation, as they may be attributable to a mistake of the reporter, a blunder of the compositor or some other cause, we await an ex planation before entering further iuto the merits of the great bore. We de sire to be enlightened as to the cause of a body of water in the l,7G0-foot level of the Gould Curry, if, as the editor says, the deep workings are dry, or if, the statement was merely a joke of Dan de Quille’s, introduced for Sutro's benefit. The Enterprise would have it appear that the people of Nevada are under obligations to ex-Senator Stewart for excluding the State from the provisions of the swamp land Act of Congress. It says: “No man was ever nearer right on any proposition than was Sen ator Stewart when he quashed the swamp land business.” As the Sena tor said in a speech on the floor of the United States Senate, that there are no swamp lands in Nevada,” we fear the Enterprise estimates right uud wrong by its own standard, that is, that the end justifies the means. Senator Stewart was wrong, as thous ands are aware, when he made the as sertion, and if the Enterprise thinks no man was ever nearer right, we should like to hear its opinion of the Beecher business. The spring fights opened up briskly this week, says the Elko Independent of last Saturday, and if the recreation continues gouged eyes and lopped ears will become a drug upon the market. A couple of “the girls” a few days since failed to agree upon the main issue, and in the discussion which en sued Nellie got away with a quarter section of the other girl’s auricular, and otherwise disfigured head-piece, for which exhibition of her personal prowress Nellie is held to answer'to the, charge of mayhem. Vice Puesiobnt Wilson, who had made arrangements for a trip to Europe has changed his mind. MV CCA TA K KS A N P KLL. j Orthographical Rales Knocked into ‘*1*1” Old Noali Su|M'i sedcd. A company of lilies and gentle- men, comprising Hie spelling aspi rants of Wirmemucca, assembled in the Clerk's office, at the Court-house on Saturday evening to test their profi ciency in the art of orthography. The gathering was not very large, but the knights of the quill, the art preserva tive,” and the schoolroom were all well represented. It was a matter lor regret that the clergy and the bar were conspicuously absent, the members of the latter, doubtless, not having suffi ciently recovered the shock of the pre vious contest. It is hoped that at the next calling of the roll the pulpit and the bar will each contribute a champion to struggle for supremacy in acquaint ance with the printers’ Bible”—the dictionary. The prime movers of the school were out of town, and the fact that no words hail been selected for the occasion rendered the proceedings somewhat slow and tedious Ibis de fect, however, is liot likely to occur again. The class being called to order, one of the prominent members came to grief over the word worshiped,” by inserting a p where it was not wanted. Another followed suit imme diately in traveling,” over which he waxed really profane, contending that there were more IV’ than one. The ludies niauagt d to dispose of “sylvan” and ‘•cymbal” without disaster, but one of the fair sex got worsted by symbol,” spelling it with an “a,” which innovation old Webster wouldn’t stand. Tautology” and symmetry” each claimed one or lwo victims. “Xenail” was then strutted out from the book, and proved a crusher. The spellers I fairly writhed over the little giant, and twisted the alphabet into every con i' nuble combination that would pro duce the desired sound—t-y-u-a-l-e, i t-i-n-n-a-l-e, t-i-n-n-e-1, t i-u-u-a-i-1, f etc., but ail to no purpose; the entire class foundered, leaving the nail un struck. A lresh start was made, and the typo’s were badly used up by the word typical.” T-i-p-i-c-a-1 said one, who ought to have known better, and be subsided amid derisive cheers. T-i-p i-c-l-e said another geutleman of the press, which extinguished his lu minary. Woos” was the next nut to crack. This monosyllable made fear ful havoc in the ranks, in fact the en tire held went down before it. We are compelled to say, however, that the worst break of the evening was made by one of Ibe journalistic persuasion, to whom was propounded the word syllable,” which he muuaged to bat ter beyond the possibility of recognition in the following fashion—“c-i-l-a-b-u-1” with tLat atrocious “bull” ringing in Lis ears, and lamenting the downfall of a brother, the writer hastily snatched up his scroll and left. Shooting ITukons.—There are sev eral docks of tame pigeons about town. These are recognized as pro perty by the law, and stealing or lull ing them is a punishable offense. This, however, does not prevent pot hunters from shooting them when they thiol* they can escape the consequences by being unobserved. Mr. Giutz informs us that his flock is being reduced almost daily by the stomach sports men, who take advantage of tneir tameness to kill and maim them, and j thut he intends to adopt measures that j will bring the offenders to gritf if they persist in their icprehcnsihle and crimi nal conduct. Sent Up.—Countable Tiffany, of Unimjville, arrived in town the other tiny with two Chinamen, sent up from j Judge Evans’ Court. One was tiued $12 50 or six days in the County Jail, fur stealing wood; the other was sen- j teiiced to fifteen days for vagrancy. The larcenist upon arriving here paid his tine and departed in peace; the j vagrant, being impecunious, is serving out hts sentence. Gonk to thk Bay,—E. lteinhart, the head of the firm of Reinhart it Co., at this place, left last evening for San 1 Francisco, to select the summer stock j of goods. He will he ubseut about two weeks. Salt.—George La tube it son arrived at the Reduction Works last Saturday j with a team loaded with 10,600 pounds of salt from the Humboldt Marsh. An Important Strikb.—Last Satur day just ns the tiny shift in the lower lejel of the l’r.tle of the Mountain luine whs about quitting, the miners broke intrf the wall of the ledge, for which they have been drifting, and be coming excited at the rich ore in the vein, continued at work until they had extracted a half ton, or such a matter, ot ere that is estimated to con tain from *tr. Bognmn and M. S. Bonnifield, who have been to Battle Mountain on professional busi ness, inform ns that Professor Stewart Las accumulated about u half ton of specimens from Galena, Lewis, Bul lion and other Listiicts in that vicinity that will create a sensation at the Centennial.
