Washington, May 25:—During the consideration of private pension bills in the senate this afternoon, Ingalls se verely criticised General lilack, com missioner of pensions, declaring him to bean imposter,to whom congress grant 'd the highest pension on the false alle gation ofliisheinga wreck. He protest si against Illack's enjoyment of such pension while opposing pensions to sther soldiers. Cockerel defended Illack's adminis tration. citing figures to show that more claims were allowed each year under ids administration than in any year in any former administration. Ingalls believed Illack's pension un just. Cockerell said that he (Ingall) should introduce a bill to discontinue the pen non. Voorhecs warmly defended lilack and denied with energy and emphasis that there had been any false allegations in the matter of Ids application for a pen sion. He represented illack’s condition it the time as one of absolute and com plete disability and ids survival wholly unexpected and extraordinary. logan would not say that lilack was not entitled to Ids pension. He ex pressed the hope that the pension office would ire administered in sympathy with the wounded soldiers. CHICAGO MARKETS. Chicago, May 2»>. Flour—ljuiet; steady. Wanted—One or more men of mod erate capital to develope a profitable canal and water power enterprise in Beatrice.—m22dawtf. J. Sterling Morton is in Washing ton opposing the passage of the bill regulating the manufacture rand sale of bogus butter. Mr. Morton is slightly in the lard business himself. The only present chance for Dakota Is to come into the Union undivided and as one State. The prospect of two republican States is more than the dem ocratic party in the present shaky con dition can consider with complacency. The plot thickens! It is claimed that a Buffalo woman who lias seen Miss Folsom writes to a friend in Buf falo who informs a Buffalo paper that tfae Buffalo woman tn Paris has beeu informed by Miss Folsom that the sto ry told by Mrs. Grundy to the effect that Miss Folsom would marry Grover Cleveland is untrue and a mortification to Miss Folsom who positively declares t that she does not intend to become the 5*;‘ first lady of the laud. Now let Presi dent Cleveland be sworn. The Nebraska City Press learns that ‘•the C. B. A (j. lobby is actually at work in Washington opposing Van Wyck's Union Pacific bill,*’ and in- j quires: “Is this activity based on an apprehension that its passage would open up this propinquity to the incur sions of the U. P.?"’ The Press should apply its interrogation point direct to J. Sterling Morton, the guardian angel of Nebraska City, the chief of lobbyists of the C. B. Q. and the professional campaign anti-monopolist for revenue only. _ The lews railroad commission feels called upon to Investigate the com plaint that the Union Pacific is again discriminating against Council Bluffs, its legal terminus, in favor at Omaha. However that may be, it is useless to overlook the fact that there is a law of trade and necessity which makes Omaha the actual terminus of the Union Pacific, and that it must remain so for all time. The company may maintain what it pleases to term a ter minus at Council Bluffs, hut beyond I V that the terminal arrangement will be decidedly empty affair. WniLZ Pension Commissioner Black Is making a warfare against Congres sional pension bills, and the president is vetoing those bills in a bunch, they mold with profit set up a mirror in the pension office where Mr. Black might aee himself as others see him. Gen. Black, the worthy pension commis skmer, who has been worked into a troubled frame of mind by fraudulent pension claims, might further the good mark by permitting hie own pension to tie cat in two. Hie pension ia the largest that can be allowed by law, and is for total disability, yet this disability does not deter him from performing the functions of an important federal office *m drawing a fat salary in addition to (at pension stipend. It does not ap pear to have occurred to some men in high pieces that the common soldier whose just claim has been pigeon-holed in the pension office for fifteen or twenty years, has any rights alongside the iffionlder-etrap heroes who have had better opportunities and more influen tial aid in securing pensions. There are thousands of these worthy men who should have been peusisued years ago. They are growing old, and if thegovern ment intends to play the honorable M port. It should do it before the last one of them bare passed through the vale «f poverty or distress into the valley of the shadow of death. There are some glass houses in Washington that x.
