Yea, I contemplate making a num ber of improvement* thi* year. Tbe first thing of any note will be Uie con struction of a large brick hiock on my property on tbe comer of Boutb Second and Main streets. Material i* a little high at present, bnt I am having plan* made, and expect to Us aWe to get brick at a reasonable firure. The block will front on both South Second and Main streets. It will be 131x130 feet in sise. and I have not determined yet whether to make it two or three stories above the )>asrment. The only reason I fear making it three stories high is on account of the Urge number of wooden buildings adjoining it is casi or na« There would 1* less danger of losing a two-«torv building than one of three stories. ne«idcs, I hare considerable other property thai I wish to improve, and do not (eel like putting too tuuch money in one place. "We ordered the tiri' k the very hour the bargain for the property was closed with Mr. Den ny, and an architect is now engaged in making the plan*. There will 1* no delay about the construction of the building, for we are more anxious than anybody else to get it up." "Will you set it bai'k, to conform with the buildings further south, on the same street?" "Most assuredly we will. lam in favor of the |>lan adopted by Mr. Ycr ier for widening Front street, and when I build the cracker factory I set it l«ack ten feet, and will do the same with the new structure. The Carpenters Hectare In Favur of the Movement. Aliout seventy five carpenters at tended a uieeiir.gat lull shall in North Seattle last evening to discuss the nine hour movement. 1.. T. Brown, presi dent of lo- al union No. 351 of the brotherhood of carpenters and joiners, presided and F. Ericson, secretary of the union, acted as secretary. Mr Ilrowri argued regarding Die de sirability uf the movement; that by making nine hour" a day's work more men would t» employed ami tinier would I* batter as wages would J* higher. 1.. tlordon «poke of tlie damage un skiiied workmen did t« the trade and approved of the apprentice system, (►nly one contractor was present and lie was a newcomer and approved of the movement. Kvery carpenter pres ent was i ailed upon to eipress his view* on the nliMt and all "aid they were in favor uf working only nine hours a day and if they could not pet U-n hours'|»ay for it they were willing to accept a reasonable reduction. It seemoi to 1* the general impression, however, that if the nine hour move ment were inaugurated the consequent scarcity of unemployed men would send wages up to the old figures again There seemed to I* no disposition to inaugurate a strike, hut all present wanted to give the contractors plentv of time to prepare for the chancre A motion was made that a committee I* appointed to meet the contractors nevt Wednesday evening, hut it was ruled out of order a" the meeting was an open one and not a session of the union. All that time 1 suffered excruciatingly in my stomach and kidneys and my left leg was almost the •lie of two legs and as hard as a rock its whole length. I could hardly eat anything ami was failing fast 1 gave myself up to die. in fact, I thought it wai only a matter of days About that time all the country round me rang with the praise of Dr. J. Eugene Jordan, and hl.l new mitogenetic system, of which he was the author. He took no cases unless they were given up as incurable by other reputable doctors. He charged nothing for services or medicine and his object seemed to he to show to the world the coming revolution of the medi cal science. I had myself conveyed to him to the Brunswick hotel, where his office is. In one day after taking his medicine the terrible pain In my stomach that stayed with me so many years and that doctors cast and west.of every school and no school, could not dislodge, vanished. My bodily health cauie hack to me. 1 threw away my crutches, and If It were not for the remain ing stiffness of my knee I would be a young man again. This does not begin to tell the suffering I endured, a volume could not do jusUce, a pen could not convey it. It was sleepless nights and days of torture, rest was foreign U> me. All this transformation lo health has now is-en a year and I have no nrcunvm-e of the trouble. In my opinion, haling tried all kinds of doctors, there Is but one rational system of medicine, and that is the Histogenetlc ay* tem. and haviug seen so many other so called incurable cases like Bright disease and blindness, etc., of my ueighbora get well, I conclude*! that the IlistogenvUc system of medlciue is the coming system of the world and all other schools will have to give way to it as darkness to light. W«ti>i»iWiam rflmwMi Seattle has labored under dUßntitiee that wo-Jd have disheartened a ten enterprising city. in Us attempt to se ra r* direct and independent railroad j cottnertion with the east. As win he w»U remembered, after the ftrat ISM. f® was raised and work had teen commenced on the first forty mile*, reports were started in the east that the proposed route was not only im practicable bat that it was through j an Onprodartive and uninviting mr tktfi of country. Eastern capitalists then quietly wt to work to ascertain the truthfulness of the damaging statements- They empiored a noted Chicago engineer named Alexander and Prof wT H. Ruffher, LLD.. of j Hew York, to personally investigate the matter. Prof. Roffner U nut only a mineralogist ami geologist of world wide renown, bat a gentleman of un- E-stioned standing and integritr. 1 aad Mr. Alexander spent nearly two months in the Territory, most of the time along the route of'and in the districts tributary to the Seattle. Lake Shore A Eastern Railway. The fol lowing brief extracts from" Prof. Ban ner's report entirely refute the state ment* referred to. and will be read with much interest: rstllttutl IDT'STACC*. j Concerning this «ity of 30,ro gress of her civilisation. Her wharves and railroad depot are crowded with business. The special pride of the city -ecms to lie her school*, public and private. Her large and handsome •chool buildings seem purposely to hare been placed in the most protni- i nent positions. Her public school; system i* well organiaed and support ed. The university of the Territory i* located here and" in full operation. These tilings considered together au-' gur most favorably for the future of this young city. Her growth will be rapidly accelera- Ited by the extension of her railroads. Besides her coal roads, she will soon be practically the connecting point of ertainly two, ami perhaps three, transcontinental railroad lines. Mie now has a railroad connecting with the Northern Pacific, and will shortly !>e connected with the Canadian Pa cific by the West Coast road (recently purchased by the Seattle, Lake Shore ■V Eastern, aiid now known as the Northern branch). But tbe road that t will no *orr ros numi— Indeed. the road which of itself would make a city at its Sound terminus— is the Seattle, l.aWe Shore A K.i-tern rail way. This will l>e true if the road never rn»«ri the limits of Washing ton Territory; but no doubt it will ul timately iron the continent, or at least have ck)M transcontinental con nection*. When these roads are thu* extended they will brinft vast quanti ties of lumber, and of mineral and ag ricultural product", ami carry in ex change foreign and domestic products for the supply of the rural ana milling population, to say nothing of the great Eastern trade. I'uget Sound must also become the chief ship-building center of the Conti nent, and the possession by Seattle of the great fresh-water lakes' so close to the Sound, and the fait that here will be the point where the |tes«emer pig iron and its products will reach tide water, will give this [sunt advantage over all others on the Sound. .Seattle will build shins for Kngland, New Kngland. South America. Asia and the Islands of the Ocean; and ju.-t here will tirst be seen the dawning of the new day which will come to our American merchant marine, of late so depressed. And the government itself must sooner or later establish on l-ake Washington a navv yard where ships can he built of the' best material at minimum cost, and where her ships out of commission can litf and-kx ke.l. secure from the teredo and the corrod ing effect* of sea-water, and can at i once get rid of their barnacles. •umi CAS HAVE SO RIVAL On the Pacific Coast except San Fran cisco, which has the only good harbor and entrance outside of i'uget Sound. but which has no coal nor iron, nor timber, and whose back country does not e»(u«l the Snoqualmie Valley, or Kastern Washington for agricultural and mineral capabilities Prof. Kuffner refer* to the company's valuable terminal facilities as "ap proaching a great monopolv such as no future road can acquire.'' and con tinues, near the Sound, and a little distance from the city, will he great sawmills, grain elevators, canneries, and, in time. fi«hs>tl and fertiliser mills, tanneries, smelting furnaces, sulphuric acid and other chemical works. And here will he the ship canal connecting the lakes with the Sound, and the ship-yards of the future." TiWKia LAMPS. l*rof 15'iffner writes as £olm small for the mill except in a very few spots. The report deals with the varied use* j to which the coal will be pot and the enterprises it will keep and Prof. BulT ner beiieves that the tiilman coal can always be mined at a profit. tans oars. The question here respecting iron I ores along this road is not as to their quantity or quality, or as to their utili zation, but only as to what road or roods will handle the !>u«ine-«s that will; arise from this source. Naturally. the bulk of it belongs to the Seattle.'Lake Shore A Eastern railway. The Seattle road is, and will continue to be. master of the situation. The location is de-, ci-tlve, and all the iron ore on the west title of the mountains is owned by men whose interests are identified with Se- j attle, and with this line of railroad. The best point for manufacture in it- self considered, the best chance for fuel, the best line for transportation,; the heat paint for trading and for ship l ment. are all on the line of the Seattle 1 i railway, tiood furnace sites mar be found at many point", but Salal I'rai- j he is a spot which seems to hare been j -e* apart bv nature at a manufactur- i ing town. It lies near the intersection j of the valleys of the Middle Pork and South Fork branches of the Snoqual mie river, is about six miles long and I three miles wide, is flat, dry. salubri- j oas, and well supplied with water It has a natural outlet to the south. a« well as to the east and west, is conve-1 nient to the iron ore of both the Mid- die and South Pork, and not far dist-' ant from the ores of the Cie-ellum. It 1 i- less than ten miles from Snoqualmie coking coal and fifteen miles from the (ireen Biver coal". And. what 1 think is still better resources for fuel, it is in the midst of the great Snoqualmie 1 forests, where saw-mill* will soon be i felling the timber, and profi ling an j endles-supply of slabs and refute tree- j i tops, from which charcoal could be; manufactured at very small expense. It is well known tliat charcoal is the j 1 best of all fuels for making iron, be-1 cause of its freedom from damaging j impurities. Its eipensiveness pener- l ally prevents its being much used now, 1 but here tbe cp-t need not exceed five cents tier bushel, and 100 bushel* to 13) bushels would suffice for a ton of iron, j The only question concerning the 1 l charcoal made from fir timber is as to its ability to liear the burden in a tall stack, ft is becoming common now i to unilize by-products of wood, formed during its conversion into charcoal by a process which makes the charcoal stronger. Itut all difficulty on this point can be relieved by conforming the size of the furnace stack to the. strength of the charcoal. This is the i only fuel which has ever been used on the Pacific" coast for tbe smelting of iron ores. Tbe demand for steel rails in the Rocky Mountain country and in the Pacific States is, and will be, large and permanent. whilst the demand in China and oilier foreign countries will constantly increase. And so will it be with 'machinery and tools of all kinds—agricultural" milling and manu facturing'. This demand will be both domestic arid foreign, and constantly enlarging. And it may 1* safely as- serted that no railroad'exists. or can he built anywhere in the Pacific States, which will compare with the Seattle, Lake Shore and Eastern Railway in its control of the iron business. The report deals with the resources of limestone, sandstone, granite and the precious mineral districts of Okan agau and Colrille as well as the won derfully priKluetive wheat and general agricultural lands of the Big Bend and Columbia Basin. l!i«> entire shipment of the Passa vant A Co. auction -uiie bought by us have arrived, over 12,U«> yard* in all.
