The bay was called! sebastopol by the Russians during the I "eign of Catherine II., whence the name! f the strong post now besieged by the I Allies. The great harbor of inkermann, j aid to resemble that of Malta, is one ofl ,he finest in the world, it has a depth! )f water varying from 21 to 70 feet, in which the largest vessels can ride at an-| ;hor, at a cable's length from the shore. I It is truly a city of caverns, for the white I ocks are full of excavations of a mo?: I extraordinary character. They consist! )f chambers, with Gothic windows, cut >ut of the solid stone. Near the harbor! he rooks are hewn inf the early ages. The Russians have! nade sad havoc with all these antiquities, I ind splendid remains. J Princely Munificence.?The Phila-I lelphia Argus says: We understand that Judge Helfen Jtein, a large coal proprietor, proposes,! )n the 22d inst., to dedicate forever a! valuable and productive coal estate, in I the Shamokin coal basin, for the benefit I >f the destitute poor of New York, Phil-1 idelphia, Baltimore, Lancaster, Carlisle, &c. On the same day, will be laid the sorner-stone of a free college, at Shamo-1 kin, to be endowed with the proceeds of another coal estate and also a coal es tate dedicated to the benefit of African colonization. The occasion will be one I af much interest. Governor Bigler, Bishop Potter, and a number of prominent ciu-| zens of the State, will be present. Judge j Helfenstein has, within the last three or four years, given over 20,000 tons of coal to the poor of Philadelphia, Lancaster,! Carlisle, and other places." A Frightful fact, brought out by the I late British census, is the terrible waste! of existence in childhood in the great I manufacturing cities. In Manchester out of every hundred thousand iniantsl born, less than fifty thousand are alive at the end of six years and but thirty-1 nine thousand at the erd of twenty. In I the large commercial townc the waste of I life is not so appalling, but still is com paratively enormous. For example, in Liverpool, out of every hundred thou-| sand persons born, about forty-five thou sand arrive at the age of twenty. The chances of life in Liverpool, as compared] with Manchester arc, therefore, as forty five to thirty nine. The great mortality! in the first six years of life, in the latter town, can only be explained by the close air, bad food, and the insufficient com forts of the operatives. Compared with the rural districts, both Liverpool and Manchester are pest houses, so to speak. Manchester, as we bare *een, gives but thirty-niae thousand. The mortality in the manufacturing towns is, consequently, two-thirds great er than in the kingdom at large, and btaut twice as large as in the healthier rural districts. This is a telling fact against the morbid growth of cities, the neglect of sanitary measures in towns, and the two common iudifferenee to the physical condition of the working man. Wells in thk Desert ?A joint reso lution has been passed by the California Legislature, instructing the representa tives of that State in Congress to exert themselves to obtain an appropriation for the sinking of wells in the Humboldt Desert, Utah Territory, for the relief of emigrants, cattle, and other trains jour neying overland by that route to and from California. Nothing bat alkaline water is met with upon the surface in that vicinity, and, as a consequence, it is very fatal to cattle and horses. Of three thousand eight hundred and thirty-nine head of cattle which started from the eastern side of the desert for California, by the Beckwith route, but one thousand and ten managed to reach California alive. Sir Walter Scott's Family.?A Lon don literary journal, in giving a sketch of Lockhart's life, makes the following .statement respecting the family of his father-in law 44 The extraordinary sweep made by death in Sir Walter Scott's family is a world-wide wonder and sorrow. Lady Scott went first; and the beloved child? Lockhart's intelligent boy, so well known under the name of llugh Littlejohn? died when the grandfather's mind was dim and clouded. Soon after Scott's death, his younger daughter and worn out nurse followed him; and in four years more, Mrs- Lockhart. The young Sir V'alter dud childless in India, and his brother Charles, unmarried, in Per sia. Lockhart was left with a son and a daughter. As years and griefs began to press heavily upon him, new sorrow arose in his narrow domestic circle. Ilia son was never any comfort to him, and died in early manhood. The only re maining descendant of Scott, Lockhart s daughter, vras married, and became so fervent and obedient a Catholic as to reu der all intimate intercourse between the forlorn father and his only child impos sible." Horace Greeley.?It is stated, in the Life of Horace Greeley, that Leggett (of all men) once discharged him from a compositor's situation on the New York Evening Post on account of his slovenly appearance. Cireeley s first employment in New York was obtained from W. T. Porter, of the Spirit of the Times, who was then foreman of West's printing of fice. The principal advocate of this belief, a native, who was educated by the missionaries, though he never made a profession of faith, propagates his doc trine by tracts aud circulars, thus making use of the weapons of the missionaries in his attack upon them. A Baltimore Book?" Brushwood." "Ben Bolt," our Baltimore correspondent, sends us the following I have just finished the perusal of a hand somely printed volume, numbering over three hundied pages, entitled '-'Brushwood picked up on the Continent, or last Summer's Trip to the Old World," by our well known towns man Orville llorwitz, Esq. It is not my usual habit to notice literary productions in a desultory daily correspond ence but as the author is one among our most talented citizens, a gentleman of elabo rate education and deep scientific research, be sides an intimate friend and acquaintance, I feel disposed to give his book a passing notice. This I do, not because he is a citizen, nor be cause he is a friend, but that the volume in review is one possessing unquestionable* merit, and is among the most interesting of its ktnd I havo ever read. Mr.May reported from the Judiciary com mittee, i bill organizing the Courts in the District of Columbia, and to reform and im prove the laws thereof, moving to put this bill on it* passage. Stated thai the President, in Decembar[^53l referred to this subject in his message, which was accompanied by a report from the Attor ney General Xhese documents were referred to the Committee on the Judiciary, of whioh he was a member. A bill to remedy existing defects in the judiciary was reported by him in JunjB last, but was recommitted for the pur pose of modification, which having been effect ed, it was now again reported. lie gave the history and plan of the exist ing courts in this Distriot, and said the laws were the same aa Ihey were at the time of the deed of cession by Maryland, wiihopt altera tion or improvement in the scheme of juris prudence, except here and thero an exception, which he might term a tinkering, and which, in'the opinion of many legal men, rather dis figured than improved the code. The system, he repeated, was extremely defective, as he proceeded (o show. The people of the District were almost unanimous for th$ ajjplition of the present judiciary system; and, in this connec tion, said that in Jane, 1850, the question was taken at tjie polls ef this city, and while twelve hundred and eeventy four persons voted for "reform, but twenty-seven voted against if. Mr. Fuller reported from the Commerce Committee a resolution authorizing and direct ing the President to open a correspondence with the British authorities, with the view to induce that Government to erect a first class light-house on Cape Race, in whole or in part, at the cost of this Government. We predict an unprecedented suo cess for this establishment. With the talent enlisted, it cannot but prove themost artrae-1 tive report in our city. The scenery, dresses, and all the paraphernalia of the fairy spsotaole are in a i style of splendor whorthy of the largest of ear theatres. While we say thns much of the piece, we must object to the bold and lasoivious exhibition of the prinoipal danseuse. She must understand that the whirl of her dress to an elevation with her waist will not atone for bad dancing, and that the awkwardness of movement is illy requited by the exhibition of the entire leg. A modest demeanor, less. haughty carriage, and better style of dancing would be very acceptable. W.e commend the above to the manager. At the Front Street Theatre, Mr. Forrest has! been doing an immense business. lie has been ably assisted by Miss Lizzie Weston and i A. H. Davenport, both of the Walnut Street Theatre, Philadelphia. The former huo com mended hercelf to the public by her natural, and elegant impersonation of such parts as Virginia and Ophelia. It Is loo apt to be the case, that unobtrusive merit -occupies the back j ground, while prosumptuous wedioority is al lowed to strut itself before the public to the detriment of the drama. Such has been the case j with Miss Weston. She has too long been con fined to what are called light, javenile chars?- j ters, when she has tho ability to fill the highest walks of the drama. Her Virginia and Ophelia are not surpassed by any living actress. The success of Mr. Forrest is, in a great measure, attributable to her admirable acting, Mr. A. i II.
