The Intelligencer, speaking of Mr. Badg?r's bill to increase the pay of members of Con gress and the judges of the United States Su preme Court, says; i "It is surprising, indeed, in view of theoir* cumstances which have heretofore prompted an increase of pay to other public servants, that the move no* made by Mr. Badgar has not been made before; but there is a fitness in the introduction of the proposition by a mem ber who, while he may be supposed to have felt the justice of the measure, will not be here himself (o erjoy the benefit ofit. Remember ing. 48 we do, the good effect whi;h resulted to the business of Congress from the experi ment of the salary system many years ago, we could have wished that the increased eompen tion now proposed to that branoh of the Gov ernment had taken the same shape Ihe Union, discussing the new fashion of I mixing politics with religion, says: The people of the United States should I pau*e before they sanction this intrusion of I the Church oa the State, and this palpable de- I sign to bring legislation into subservituey to religious dogmas and fantacies, which, if made 1 the basis of tho action of government, will I render every provision of our Federal and I S'ate constitutions for the protection of per- I sonal liberty null and void. That many pulpit politicians aim at such a consummation, and I diearn of its accomplishment, is becoming j every day more apparent. It waa lately I stated that sixty-six clergymen had been I elected to the Legi?laturo of Massachusetts, I and two or three to Congre.-s In Ohio and I other States we see the same thing. We pre- I fcume they mean to fulfill the obligation of their I ordination.'to maintain und set forward, as I much as in them lieth, quietness, peace, and I love among all Christians.: by sowing dissen- I sions in the States, and fostering inveterate I antipathies between different sections of the I I'nion."
