[From the Detroit D ?ilv Advertiser. 1 B0K3T1CKS SEES THE MILLEKITES. Nkw York, Nov. 13, 1854. My friend Datnphool lately became convinced that, according to the comfort able predictioniof Mr. Miller, the "end ol Larth would become speedily visible to the naked eye, as that amiable gentle man had advertised the world to burn on tee fifteenth. According to the pro gramme, the entertainment was to com mence with a trumpet solo by Gabriel (not the one of City Hall celebrity,) to lx? fallowed by a general "getting up stairs and grand mass meeting of the illustrious defunt?after which "the elect" were to start for Paradise in special conveyances provided for their accommodation?the whole to concludc with asplendid display of fireworks in the evening. Damphooi had done nothing but sing songs for a week. Bull Dogge, who was also a con vert, had paeked up his wardrobe in a hat-box, and left the city, saying that 1 e owned forty shares in a Kentucky coal mine, and was going to take possesion of his property; and he offered to bet us the drinks that if he stood on a vein of that coal, he would be the last man scorched. Damphooi squared up his board bill, and paid his washerwoman, which left him dead broken; sold his watch to a "blaspheming Jew to raise money with which to procure an ascension robe, in order to do honor to the occasion; he got one made oflinen cambric; it was a trifle too long, and cut him malignantly under the arms, but he bore it like a martyr; he got shaved, took a bath, put on his robe, bid me farewell, and got ready to go up. I discovered the place from which they were to start, and went up myself to see the operation?in a vacant lot, where there were no trees to catch their skirts in their anticipated flight?large crowd on the ground; one maiden lady in a long white gown, had also dressed her lap dog in a similar manner; a man wi?h a family Bible in his hand, had forgotten his robe, and come in his shirt-sleeves; ancient wench in a white right-gown, with red shoes, and a yellow handker chief round her head, knelt down in a small puddle of rain water, and prayed to take her up easy, and not hurt her sore ancle: lady from East Broadway, came m a robe cut low in the neck, and trim med with five flounces; red haired wo man mnde her appearance with a crying baby, to the consternation of the com pany, who expected to go to Heaven, and li d no relish for a preliminary taste of the other place: careful old lady brought her overshoes in a work-basket, to weir home in case the performance should be postponed; little girl had her doll, and her three year old brother had a hoop, a tin whistle and a painted kite; poor wash erwoman came, but as she had only a cotton robe and a scant pattern at that, the more aristocratic ladies moved farther away, and smelt their cologne, while the poor woman knelt down in the corner, with l?er face to the fence Sixth Avenue lady came in a white satin robe had a boy to hold up her train, and she had her own hands full of visiting cards an Af rican brunette carried a cushion for her mistress to kneel upon, and a man fol lowed behind with a basket containing her certificate of membership, a gilt-edged prayer book, two mince-pies and some ham sandw-iches; old cripple hobbled up, and as he was devoutly saying his pray ers, a bail boy, (who had not made any preparation for teial traveling,) stole his crutch to make a ball club. Crowd be gan to separate into knots, according to their different creeds and beliefs Unita rians, Baptists, Presbyterians, and Meth odists, clustering round their respective preachers. T noticed that one old lady, evidently believing in the perfect sancti ty of her darling minister, and desiring to insure her own passage, had tied her self to his left leg with a fish line.
Sunrise?all knelt down to pray; east wind blew, and it began to rain. I no ticed that Damphooi had found a dry place on the lee side of a cider barrel. Methodist man took off his coat, and made a stump prayer, while all his con gregation yelled glory!" Baptist man inserted a special clause in his supplica tion, that he and his crowd might go up in a separate boat. Ministers all prayed at each other, and for nobody. Know Nothing clergyman addressed a long winded political prayer to the Almighty, detailing the latest election returns, de ploring the choice of the opposite candi date, imploring his blessing on the next Governor, (if the world should stand,) in sinuating that he expected the nomina tion himself; and concluded by advising Him to exclude from Heaven all foreign ers, or they would refuse to live up to the regulations, and would certainly kick up another row among the celestials. Down town man on hand, ready to go up; tried to pray, but, from want of practice, could only utter some disjoint ed sentences about uncurrent funds," "money market," "Erie down to SO;"1' (Damphooi whispered that if that man ever got to heaven he would melt down the golden harp into coin, and let it out at two ptr cent, a month began to rain harder; wind decidedly chilly, their teeth chattered with cold, and they be gan to wish for the conflagration to "com mence. Naughty boys on the fence be gan to throw stones?promiscuous pray ing on every side. Methodist man stopped in the midst of a long, touching suppli cation to cuff the ears ol a little boy who hit him with a brick; hours slipped away, began to think the entertainment was postponed on account of the wea ther." Noon came; folks were not half so scared as they were in the morning ministers had got too hoarse to talk, and were passing the time kissing the sisters. Damphooi looked so chilly that I got him a glass of fyot whisky punch he looked at me with holy horror, and went on with his prayer, but before be got to i. r w THE WEEKLY STAR. "amen," the punch had disappeared husband of red-haired woman came and ordered to go home and wash the break fast dishes, and then mend his Sunday pantaloons. One o'clock, feal began to cool off; at two, the enthusiasm was below par; at three the rain poured so that I thought an alteration in the litany would be ne cessary, to make it read, Have mercy on us, poor miserable swimmers." Small lioy threw a handful of gravel at a long, Methodist man, which hit him in tbe face, and made him look like a mulatto with the small pox. Long Methodist man hunched small boy with a fence raii. Four o'clock Gabriel had'nt come yet. Damphool, much disappointed, muttered something about being sold people evidently getting hungry; no loaves nor fishes on the ground woman with two children said she was going home to put them in the trundle bed long man looked round to see that no one was looking, then tucked his robe under his arm, got over the fence, and started home on a dog trot. Dark no signs of fire works yet; pyrotechnic ex hibition not likely to commence for some time. Crowd was now becoming impatient. (I here missed Damphool, and found him an hour afterward, paying his devotions to an eighteen penny stew and a mug of ale.) Staid an hour longer, when the crowd began to disperse, with their as cension robes so sadly draggled that if they had received a second summons to go, it would have taken an extra quanti ty of soapsuds to make them presentable among decent angels. Appointed myself a committee of fire to look into the matter offered the fol lowing resolution, which I unanimously adopted: Resolved, That putting on a clean shirt to go to heaven in, don't always result in gettiug there, even though the tails be of extra length and that the creed which teaches u.s this mode of pro cedure is a farcical theology, fully worthy to be ranked among the many other ex cellent 44 sells" of that veteran joker of world-wide celebrity?Jo Miller. Damply yours, Q. K. Philander Doesticks, P. B. Tns Position* of the Allies ?The allies are making preparations to go into winter quarters, a confession that the present compaign is a failure. They have realized the fact that from being be siegers, they have, by the immensely su perior force of .he Russians, became in turn the besieged. They are reduced to the defensive, and their position is still very pei ileus. The London Times says: 44 A re-embarkation is out of the ques tion. We have not the mwans of carry ing our allies with us, and it were better to sacrifice very man and every gun, than basely and meanly to desert them. In deed, were we alone, such an operation in the face of such an enemy, is not to be thought of. However grave our situation may be, we are spared the fluctuations of doubt and the agonies of uncertain councils. There is nothing for the allied armies in the Crimea, but to maintain by their valor the position they hava taken up, or to perish under the weight of over whelming numbers. The hackneyed al ternative, 4 to conquer or to die,' was ne vwr put before an army in a more per emptory shape. This is their duty, and we doubt not they will do it. They know how to conquer, and they know how to die." The New Naturalization* Bill in* Congress.?The following is the bill in troduced into the United States Senate by Mr. Adams, of Mississippi, in refer ence to the naturalization laws: Tie it enacted. &c. That on and af ter the passage of this act no alien shall be admitted to become a citizen of the I'nited States unless he shall at the time of his application to be admitted, declare and pro\e to the satisfaction of the court having jurisdiction of the case, that he has resided in the I'nited States twenty one years at least; provided that any alien who may be a resident of the Uni ted States at the date of this act shall be entitled to all the third condition spe cified iu the first section of the act ap proved April 24, 1802, of which this act is? amendatory. Se<\ 2. And be it further enacted, That so mo~h of the third condition spe cified iu the first section of the act ap proved April 24, 1802, entitled 44An act to establish a uniform rule of naturali zation and to repeal the acts heretofore passed on that subject," as conflicts with the first section of this act, be and the same is hereby repealed. A Sad Case?A Raving Maniac from Spiritualism.?A commission de lunatic# inquirendo was instituted at the Nelson House, in this village, on Tuesday last, which resulted in finding Nathan Na thanson, a German pedler of jewelry, in sane. It appears that, about three weeks since, he became acquainted with some persons in Fairfield who are believers in the spirit rapping delusion, and practised as media. Nathanson witnessed the phe nomena of table-moving and communi cations from the dead?affecting to deride at all; but in the evening he was ob served to to be considerably agitated. He spent the night in the house. Before morning he aroused the family by cries for help, and exhibited very strong ner vous excitement. From that time he was possessed with the idea that he was a medium?that his arms and hands were moved by super natural influence?and in three weeks he became a raving maniac: his business prospects, which were flattering, de stroyed his earnings, which amount to a considerable sum. about to be expend ed for bis support and leoovwy, and him self doomed, possibly, to the sad life of a confirmed luxiatic ??JUokawk Courier? job .?V-?

A communication was received from tbss Kemp, Esq yesterday arrived in Washington from his home on the verdant Eastern Shore of Vir ginia. He at once started out sight feeing," and after gap'ng ever the curiosities in the Patent Office for some time, a gentleman intrc duced himself to him and offered to chaperon him around among the note worthy objects of the Federal city. So they started fer the Washington Monument. There they picked up a third worthy creature, who, aftera while, proposed the patent safe" game, which Mr. Eastern Shore bid at to the tune ?f twenty-five dollars. The scamp with the sate, after get ting the money into his possession, went off, and hi9 accomplice followed, being evidently highly indignant at the outrageous manner in which his newfound friend had been swindled. The latter, in obedience to the advicc of the former, waited for his return in vain until his patience was exhausted. On going to his nuaiters, he received jeers from his friands in stead of sympathy. Fer the credit of the Eastern Shore they begeed him quietly to fsocket his loss, but his griet was too grtat; so ?formation of it got to the Star. The thieves generously left him four dollars His purpose was to have spent a week here, but be must now forego it, we presume Our advice is, that he shall step into our office, and sub scribe forthwith for the Weekly S'ar. lie cannot make a better investment out of the four dollars so generously left in his pocket, in view of the fact that he may hereafter again venture from home. A Sad Case ?The visitors to the guard house this morniug witnessed a sad care It i appears that an old man named Conncll, in j p .ssing along our streets, saw his wife in the charge of an officer, who was conveying hor to the workhou?o, to which she had been c ?mmitJed on account of some misdenjieinor j upon ascertaining how matters stood, he in j duced the officer to return to the guard house, where be paid costs, and had her discharged. Connell, in the presence of a number of per sons, declared he was from that time out for ever done with his wife She was the cause ot 'he trouble? of bis old age. instead of being 1 to him a help meet and comforter The man ner in which he told his griefs, with quivering lip and tearf ul eye, touched the heart* of those who beard him. lie rejected all propositions to take the erring wife home, saying he never would live with her again. They were both taken to the watch house the night previous for dis;urbing the neigh borhood in which ihty live. Connell is 61 years old and his wife about 50. Selden A Withers.?The Washington cor respondent of the Alexandria Sentinel says "A friend of mine had $4,700 deposited with the concern known as the Exchange liank; and on failing to get his money here, attached the property of John Withers in St. Louis. Missouri The property attached, is probably worth from forty to fifty thousand lollars, and as it cannot be assigned while the ittaohmunt is upon it, it will givo others an opportunity to recover their just dues I un lerstand a venerable and distinguished old soldier, and now an esteemed Senator, has lost a large amount by misplaced confidence in the same concern.'' Pipe-Laying ?We notice that the workmen of the G as Company have started a nev job of ditching ior laying pipo. They began at the comer of Seventh street and the Avenue, and continued down Seventh street toward the Canal. Ihe gas is being carried to every sec tion of the city?the frost in the earth, nor the leason creates any obstacle to the workmen. 1'be greatest objections are the mud, the length )f time the ditches are open, and the pave ments being removed. WifE WnirrER.?Jeremiah Calahan was taken to the guard house last night for whip ping his wife. From the evidence, it appears that she has been sick for some timo pa t, and he, coming home drunk last night, >>egam to beat her and the children. He knockod her lows, and kicked her over the eye, bruising bcr very badly. Mr. J. J. Mulloy, hearing the fracas, ran in the house, and seizing Cala han, threw hiui out. The officers arrested bim, and this morning he was sent to jail. Concerts for toe Poor.?The concert by the Union Choir Association, for the benefit of the poor, whi:li was announced to take place on the 20th instant, has been postponed until Friday evening, the 29th instant, in conse (juei.ee of the impossibility of finishing th? new hall in the Smithsonian by the time fir*t announced.
