A ROHAKTIC 8TOBY OF LOTS Daring the summer, there has resided m Pans a stranger of distinction, an Italian count of noble tame and large for tune, whoso late adventures have created quite a noise in society, and whose ad vent in fashionable faubourgs will un doubtedly create unmitigated remark Blessed with a passion for music, he has appeared at every performance of opera during the late season: as much, I sun pose, to gratify his taste as to dispel the ennui which the want of other amuse ment would have produced. At his first attendance, the count, while seated in his stalle d'orchestre, amused himself during the entr'actes by attentively regarding the assembly in which he found himself. And he finally distinguished, in a con Sjgjqymi loge, a young and very pretty WOEPfrtiy whose toilette and appearance \v%re Tahiltless. Wishing to ascertain something concerning her, he addressed himself to his neighbors, but his neigh bors being entirely of the summer order of opera attendants, were unacquainted with the grand world, and could not satisfy his inquiries. By dint of indus try and judicious bribery *he was enabled to learn during the evening, that the loge was hired by three different persons for the three representation nights of each week, and they severally occupied it in their turn. This was a Monday; Mon days, the ouvreuse informed him it be longed to a Madame de Oerny. This, then, was the name of his inamorata. Charmed by her grace and manner, the ardent Italian lorgnetted her during the whole performance, and the next day ascertained that Madame de Cerny was a lady of noble family and large fortune, and that her character was free from re proach, and her reputation spotless. She appeared at the opera neither Wednesdays nor Fridays?for they were not her nights?but every Monday the count was J permitted to gaze at and admire her His regards and expressive contemplation were not long unnoticed by their "object, and, without absolutely replying to them, she yet managed to show him that his j conduct neither angered nor anuoyed her. t In despair of an acquaintance, he had de- terminod to follow her from the theatre, j but Madame de Ccrny escaped him by sin adroit manuvre. Evidently she did J ?ot wish to be followed, and, in fact, she declared it frankly the following Sunday, when the count, discovering her in the garden of the Tuilleries, seated himself by her, and through an ingenious pre- tence, took occasion to politely addross her. l A man of wit and good taste can al- j ways succeed in cases of this kind in making himself aoceptable; he was list- ened to attentively, but permission to present himself at the house of his adored one was resolutely refused him. The young lady had private reasons, s which, at a later period, she might, per- haps, explain. She informed him mod- c fstly that he was in error regarding her; 2 3he was not Madame de Cerny, and she persisted in keeping him in ignorance of tier real address, for the private reasons before alluded to. The count was charmed by her simplicity, her modesty, and her refinement; and after further interviews with her, finding himself completely en chained, he abruptly offered his hand and fortune, and was abruptly accepted. Ihey immediately proceeded with the nuptial celebrations, and at their com pletion they departed for the count's es tate in Italy, as loving a couple as ex isted in all Europe. But when the true Madame de Cerny returned to Paris, and had informed herself of everything that had transpired in her absence, and dis- covered that through her kindness to her mautua-maker in allowing her the free use of her box at the opera one evening during every week of the summer sea son; and when she further learned that the count was young, handsome, and wealthy, she was overwhelmed with envy, and bitterly regretted that in place of listening to hackneyed compliments 1 in Germany she had not remained in Paris to have occupied her box herself, not doubting in the least her entire abil ity to have captured the glittering prize of which the pretty milliner so success fully deprived her. Her spite manifested itself in an epistolary incident, which has been divulged to the world, much to the amusement of scandal-mongers, and great ly to the delight of that prince of feuille- 1 tonists, M. Guinot, from whom I take it: 44 Madame la Comtesse?I send you the price of four hats and two bonnets that you have made lor me and kindly forwarded to my address in the country, 1 since the settlement of our previous ac count. I have not been entirely suited with the lace hat; the front was too large, and not sufficiently expanded. The cap trimmed with gimp was equally unfortunate. Nevertheless I do not de sire to abate the price agreed upon be tween us. Be kind enough to send me your receipt for the money which you will find inclosed. The faults which I have mentioned do not prevent me from always considering you a highly skillful workwoman, and I preserve a faithful remembrance of the pains you have in variably taken to please me. If yeu re sume the business which latterly you have interrupted, as I am informed, be assured, Madame la Comtesse, I will re turn to you my custom." The letter has circulated throughout Paris, and naturally has been greatly commented upon. A peculiarly woman ly correspondence, in my opinion?ex hibiting to a nicety the amiable feelings which the sex cherish one towards an other in certain' circumstances. The countess, however, with an income of sixty thousand francs a year, can cheer fully meet such kind reminiscences of her earlier position in life, and as her husband has since expressed himself sat isfied, why should not the world be! We have been wait ing to give the results of some careful experiments which were being made in ?"rlow? family, but which were broken oil by sickness. Enough, however, was ascertained to convince us that there is really a great advantage in adding a small quantity of borax to common hard soap, previous to using it in washing. Our mOhod is as follows To every pound of hard soap add from one-half to three quarters of an ounce of common borax wiih one quart ef water. Put the water U\aQJ Cunvenieat veS8*1 uP?n the store, add the borax .somewhat pulverised, and then put m the soap cut up in thin pieces. Keep them hot?but not boiling ?for two or three hours, or until the whole is well dissolved, and then set it aside to cool, when a solid wju formed. If the vessel is set upon the warm stove at night, the operation will be completed in the morning. Though we think it better to stir the mass iust before it is cooled. The night before washing, rub the clothes where most soiled, with the soap and soak in water till morning. This soap, which has been more than doubled in quantity, will go quite as far, bulk for bulk, as the original, thus saving at least one-half. The boiling and washing are to be performed in the usual manner; but it will be found that the labor of rub bing is diminished three-fourths, while the usual caustic or eating effect of the soap is greatly lessened and the hands will retain a peculiarly soft and silky feeling, even ufler a large washing. The preparation is adapted to all kinds of fa brics, colored or uncolored, including flannels; and it is thought to increase their whiteness. By using this prepara tion, with the previous soaking over light, we have had sixteen dozen pieces inished early in the forenoon, when, by he old process, it would have been an 4 all day'8 job." The Lsury Laws ?The Baltimore American says: The usury laws will !>e very generally brought to the atten ion of the State Legislatures this win ter with a view either to their entire ab rogation or liberal modification. In Sorth Carolina a bill has been introduced :o amend these laws in several important particulars. It is proposed that the regular interest shall be, as now, six per :eut. per annum, upon a sale of any ^oods, chattels, wares, and merchandise, unless, by a special contract or writing between the parties, a higher or lower rate be fixed It is also proposed that in *uits at law judgment shall be rendered for the principal money and the interest iuc, according to the rate agreed upon md stipulated: Provided, however, that ?uch rate shall and may be reduced to >ix per centum per annum upon the spe cial pica of the defendant. The Massa chusetts Legislature, as well as that of 'sew iork, will be petitioned to revise he present laws upon the subject. This gives the total ralue of the lumber that has passed down the river during the season of 1854, at 51,680,180! The Badger State remarks >hat this is one of the items of Wisconsin resources that has scarcely been counted Heretofore, and branch of industry yet in ts infancy. Wisconsin Legilature. The Mil waukie News brings us the final result )f the recent election for members of the Legislature in Wisconsin, as follows: The official returns from the 19th sen ate district give Wm. J. Gibson, Demo crat, 53 majority over Moses Gibson, h usion, for the State Senate. This places the political complexion of that body beyond doubt. It leaves the Democrats 13, Fusionists 12. This gives our friends a clear working majority in the Senate, while they have at least an even chance in the louse. The Fusionists claim a nominal majority in the House, but the Democrats and independents, who are all anti-Fusion, will in all probability out number the speckled party. The Pay of Members of Congrees? The bill of Senator Badger, introduced and most ably advocated on the day before yes terday, by Mr. B., in the Senate, will be vehemently denounced by all the many dema gogues of the press as a matter of course. It would be expecting too much of them to en tertain the idea that they can forego such an opportunity of displaying their peculiar style of patriotism, which the mooting of a proposi tion to increase the pay of members of Con gress and the jndges of the Supreme Court of the United States offers. Nevertheless, the measure is a good one in its aims and leading features. Serving in Congress at eight dol lars per diem by no means pays pecuniarily) as strange as it may sound to thousands hundreds of thousands at a distance from Washington. Here, it is well known to nearly all ogr readers, that not one in ten of the mem hers manage to do better on their pay and mileage than to make both ends meet at the termination of the session. Nearly every member has a family to support at home, whoee expenses are not materially lessened by their own temporary abssnoe it Washington. Nearly all of them are at that time of life when their families are moat expensive, having children half grown, requirirg the expendit are of more to sustain and educate them than earlier or later in life. Nearly all of them are from walks in life wherein liberal, if not lavish personal expenditures are oommon; and nearly all of them are in their prime?at the age at whioh they should be most indus triously laying ap for the future, if ever. Their duties, and the associations by which they are surrounded here, are always such as to render the practice of such economy in their personal expenditures in Washington, as they might be expected to exercise at home, utterly out of their power, however muoh dis posed so to do they may be. It is possible that those of them who enjoy very heavy mile age may save something fxom the compensa tion they allow themselves; but only such can accomplish that end for which noarly all of us strive so earnestly, except by the practice of rigid parsimony. Now, under this state of facte, they are almost hourly called on to vote money from the national treasury on all con ceivable pretexts. Their fiat may empty it, as it fills it. To underpay them, then, is to hold out inducemants to them to make up the deficiency by their own legislation. If they were paid sixteen rather than eight dollars per diem, we fancy that tew resolutions for the biennial distribution of say $109,000 worth of books among themselves would beoome laws. Such results, however, are by no means the worst evils of the system of underpaying members of Congress under which they are now laboring, as we most sincerely believe They cannot, possibly, all legislate with an eye solely to the public interest, while they know that the expenditure of their time and talents here is to rosult in nothing for them selves and families, ;ave and except a sub sistence for the time they are so engaged. This is a plain view cf the case, which mast strike all as correct who have studied human nature. Nine-tenths of them, too, are active and ef ficient business men at home, full of braios and energy. Just the men, of all men, to juccend in business and accumulate property. To expect that such persons will, when under paid, guard the public interest as faithfully and act as independently of surrounding in fluences, more or less of which are as im proper as unfortunate, is to look for, in them, almost superhuman virtues, as humanity runs in this age of ours. We really believe that if their pay was increased, their work would be so much better done in all respects, as to make the expenditure of the difference about the most profitable investment ever made from the Treasury of the United States. r? 'EVENING STAR. LOCAL INTELLIGENCE~ A Ramble Through the Washington Vary Yard? No. 1. No member of either branch of our Na tional Legislature?no sojourner or visiter at the Metropolis of the Union?no oitisen who contemplate* with pride the growing power of oar gallant Navy?should fail to glance through the Washington Navv Yard. It is a miniature world of Science, Art, and Indus try. It is embellished w?fh enduring monu mtnts of the genius, skill, and ta^te of our honest and hardy mechanics. It is avast and ?cried school, wherein the learned and inge ni us may be edified and interested, the un learned anl inapt instructed and improved The Navy Yard is the very life of the south eastern section of our city. It may be likon ?d to a great heart, throbbing in the besom of the Sixth Ward, and imparting to it energy activity, omfort, and happiness. Its influ ?tces are seen and felt in the numerous neat ar.d unpretending dwelling? that surround it, cheered by the presence of happy and con tented families; ia the ssveral handsome et urch edifices that adorn the neighborhood; in the schools, pub ic and private, that have sprung up in its vicinity; and in the ben ?ficial ani other useful societies th\t dispense their charities and impart their advantages to that thriving and interesting locality. A somewhat accurate idea may be formed of a impetus given to business in the vicinity of the Navy Yard, and of the swarming life ?nd bustling activity there visible, when it is ?t ited that there are now on the roll* of the yr.rd the names of rUren hundred and seven tv five mechanics and laborers, and that the disbursements for the last month, on account of wages, amounted to the sum of $42.alL OH. The wages for some time past havo averaged $10,000 per week; they are paid semi-monthly. A large proportion of $20,000 is thus, twice a ?:>ntb. ecattered through the community, and ?specially through the eastern section of the ci'y, by those honest and generous sons of toil, ctTrying wi th it. to many a loved andcherish m abode, plenty and contentment. In con nootion with this point, we cannot forbear from quoting two noble passages from the recent annual Report of the Secretary of the Navy, alike worthy of the head and heart of James C Dobbin Eloquently and truthfully has the honorable Secretary remarked, in that lumin oc.3 State paper, in justification of the great oost of building up a sufficient Navy "That {the [great co3tJ should always be vigilantly w itched by theprulentstatesman; who should, however, remember that every dollar is ex pended among our own people in the purchase ol material and payment of labore~s, and that it brings into exeroise the mechanical skill of our country, promotes, and thereby perpetu ates, a class in our midst essential to our na tional independence. lie who visits our Navy Yards, and lingers a moment in beholding tka giant frames of the noble ships now being con tracted by tbe genius, the labor, and with tt* material of our own country, will find that the money expen ied not merely results in pre k mting a floating battery to protect our prop r wrty and our flag, but gladdens the hearts of hundreds of cheerful artisans, who pay it back ii.to the treasury with fourfold interest." There are comprehended within the present llmita of the Navy Yard about twenty-eight sores of land It is contemplated to enlarge it by embracing three squares of about ten a?res, (or six squares cf atout twenty acres,) oa the eastern side This improvement would aid greatly to the facilities of the yard for the execution of the public work, and, in view of the increase of the Navy, becomes highly de firable, if nut absolutely necessary. The yard is under tbe command of Captain Eiram Paulding?an officer who combines wrh tbe ability, dignity, and firmness essential ia euch an important position, all the urbanity and affability which mane intercourse with him pleasant and agreeable. Indeed, all the offiierf assigned to duty at this station are. every inch of thera, officers as well as gen tlemen. and deservedly popular Good feel ing and harmony prevail in and between the various departments the business progresses vigorously?the men work cheerfully; and these are the best evidences of wlso and judi cious management. With the expression of these preliminary thoughts, whioh have sprung almost unbidden from the mind, and sought an outlet at the joint of the pen, we shall proceed to portray, as well as our feeble ability and limited time will permit, some of the prominent fsaturaj of the various buildings and workshops which enrich and beautify the yard. First, let us enter THE ROLLING MILL, nnder the superintendence of Mr. II Hunt, chief engineer and machinist, (Mr. Matthew McNally, foreman This is a large and hand I tome brick structure. 200 feet in length and feet in width. The first object that attracts attention is a large double e:e^m engine (M r. William Quigley, er.giueer.) of 150 horse power, the fly wheel of which weights 17 tons, the whole designed and cons' ruoted, about two years since, by Mr. William M. Ellis, former chief engineer and machinist. Here there are also three heating furnaces and a pickling and drying furnace The machinery consists of three sets of rollers?ere fer break ing down, another for finishing plate or sheet copper, and a thiid for rolling bolt copper from half an inch to two and a half inches diameter. It is estimated that the capacity of this mill, with a full complement of hands, is amply sufficient to supply double the quan tity of plate, sheathing, and bolt copper re quired forour present nary. But, in nddi'ion to the rolling of copper, this mill is also made available lor iolliLg xuMled or sheet lead, of thieknosses varying from three to fifteen pounds to the foot, and of sheets weighing m Lbout l,5o0 pounds. From 60,000 to bl);U00 pounds have recently been rolled from old korap lead sent to tho yard for that purpose, and ?ill be forwarded to other stations. A J'air of shears, for cutting the thickes: plate or bolt copper, may also here be seen. The fouthern portion (nearly half) of this building is yet unoccupied by machinery, being de signed for an equal number of sets for rolling {date or bar iron. In connection with this mill there ia a smoke-stack 143 feet in height, stcd also an immense reservoir, continually supplied through pipes from the river, con* taining upwards of 30,000 gallons of water, for feeding the boilers, which embrace the latest improved attachments, and are three in number With the aid of Baker's patent force pump, used in supplying tbe engine, the res ervoir ciin readily be made available in case of fire in any pa*t of the yard, and affords an inexhaustible supply of water. On tbe occa sion of the recent fire at the iron foundery, it was of incalculable service. There are at present employed in this department, in roll ing bolt, plate, ai.d sheet copper, fourteen hands. We will now step over the way, and pass successively through THE BRASS PuUSDERY A30 RXPINEUY?THE CA BOOSE fHOP?1 HE URAS!> FINISHING SHOP? THE COPPERSMITHS' SHOP?AXP THE TAJIK shop? all under the ?unerintcndence cf Mr. Abel G. Davis. In the first named branch there is a large smelting furnace, capable of melting five thousand pounds of metal at a heat, ana of turning out material for castings of any de scription required for the naval service. There is also a drying furnace, with a pit for casting boat howitzers, all of which, heretofore made at this yard, have been cast from this furnace. There are likewise furnaces for crucible cast ings for refining copper, and for melting lead. In the second division, (the caboose shop, Mr. Adam Uaddis foreman.) there is a steam en gine (Mr. Thos Altemus engineer) of fifteen horse power, manufactured at the yard about twelve years since under the direction of Mr. William M. Ellis. This engine is much ad mired, being regarded by competent judges as une of the test eugines of its site in the coun try. The machinery connected with it con sists of a pair of large shears for cutting heavy plate iron, a punching machine, a pla ning machine, drills for bushing shells, temptation of something akin to which, bat not half so murderous looking, doubtless prompted the poet to write? Man's inhumanity to man Makes counties* thousands mourn." In tho third division (the braai finishing k
?bop, Mr. Miohael Carroll foreman,) are va rious slide, rack, and serew cutting lathes, boriag maohlnee. drills of Tarious descriptions! and planing machines, for tha manufacture of all articles of brass and composition work used in the navy. The work here done em braces pump chambers and boxes, foroe pumps, coupling screws, braas cogues and sheaves, air-ports and valves, magaaine and bilge cocks, brass railings and frames foroanopies, ships' bells, screws of various kinds, (em bracing Iron rigging screws,) tops and bot toms lor powder tanks, cannon lock?, brass bushes and fuss stocks for sbelH, Ao Ac. In the fourth division (coppersmiths' shop) powder tanks are completed, tin prepared for roofs, copper pipes of all deeorintions brazed, and tinners and plumbers' work in general exe cuted. In the fifth and last division of this extensive establishment, (the tank shop, Mr. Henry Greenfield foreman,) iron water tanks for all classes of ships are manufactured, as also smith work and tools required for the use of the five divisions numerated. Fifty-two hands are employed in these several shops. We will now walk over to THB RIGGING LOFT, under the superintendence of the veteran boatswain, George Willrnuth This loft is about 200 feet in length, and is provided with winches and machinery for stretching and fitting the largest site standing rigging. There is abundant room for the fitting of a gang of rigging for the largest olass vessel. Little has been done in this line however, except for the ordinary purposes of the Yard There arc sixte3n hands employed in this department Let us now go into THE ANTHOR AMD PUDDLING SHOPS, under the superintendence of Mr. James Tucker, Master Smith, (Mr. Jno F. Tucker, foreman In the Anchor Shop, two of Nes bith'a steam hammers are in operation, and anchors of the largest size, (from 11,000 to 12.000 pounds,) as well as shafts for steam en gines. are manufactured All the anchors, capstan spindles, and other heavy work for the naval service, are forged in this estab lishment. In the puddling shop there is a furnace, with a steam trip hammer, the boiler being over the furnace. All the corap iron collected at the several Navy Yards is sent hither, and worked up into blooms of a very superior quality, deemed preferable to any other iron for the manufacture of anchors and other substantial work. In these shops (under the same roof) there are twenty-nine hands employed. Taxes.?For the information of our numer- I jus readers, and at the request of the Colleo tor, we copy the following from the hitelli Renter of yesterday: "Lest our reference yesterday to the proceed ings of one branch of the City Councils might I nduce property holders to defer the payment I >f their taxes, we deem it proper to gay that I it is yet possible for the City Collector to have I he annual advertisement of the sale of the I property of delinquents ready by the first of I January, and that he contemplates doing so I unless the time should be extended by an act I :>f the City Councils Tax-payers will do well, I herefore, to dis3harge their respective dues, I ?nd not anticipate a contingency which may I aot occur. For the "condition of the tax-1 sookg,'" assigned as the cause for postponing I :he publication of delinquents, the City Col lector is in noway responsible, as he has no iontrol over those books until they are placed I n bis hands to enable him to oollect the as-1 lessmentu He has had them in his posses-1 ion for some days past and is now proceeding I with his duties." A Charming Concert.?Last evening, wel 'ound a large company in and around the mag-1 lificent music saloon of Hilbus A Hits, in the I Star Buildings. They were drawn together I >y the first meeting of a now music society, I ander the lead of Frofesaor Schenig, which I iasju3tbeen formed to perform at evening) >arties, ic It consists cf eight of the finest I nstramentaliats in Washington, Noll b&ing the I eading violinist, and Pro.essor Schell the! >iani?t. Kepetti is the performer on the oor-1 let-vpiston. They played several pieces I nost admirably, to the delight of the amateurs j >resent. Wo understand that they meet at I T o'clock on Tuesday evening nsxt, when all I who choose to attend will doubless be highly I gratified, if they relish fine music well fexe-1 jutod. The formation of this band cr society I will do much, indeed, to render all entertain I mento agreeable, where they may be employed to minister to the pleasure of the guests. I The Virginia Banks ?We are informed I that the noto3 of the Trans-Alleghany Bank of I Virginia are again beginning to circulate in I that State, pnd that in some counties they are I received by the sheriffs for taxes. A consider-1 able portion of the circulation has been re I deemed?all presented for redemption having j been met, as far as we hare heard. The pres sure upon all the banks has been very heavy, I and the Virginia banks have sustained them selves so far. We hope they will soon be able to give the usual accommodation to the com. munity. We can hardly conceive how a cir oulation can be made more safe than to be secured by the bonds of the State, under the I independent banking law of Virginia. Whisky Doings.?There is scarcely a ease brought before the justices at the guard-house but what is connected with intemperance. If a person were to notice every case of this sort, ind write down whiiky far each offence, he would have nothing to do but write?whisky. Every penal case in yesterday's watch returns, is well as to-day's, was brought about by in empcrance. What must be the feelings of a i man, whose better nature was not entirely lead within him, if his wife and children ap? geared against him to claim the proteotion of be law' There was such a case this mornibg >y the wife of one, who, in days past, has H>me an excellent character, and been the mde of his family. The magistrate was obliged to send him to jiii in order that his 'ainily might be safe from his intemperate and >ru'al assaults. A Beautiful Work cf Art ?The enter- arising and so skilful house of M. W. Gait A I 3ro have just prepared for the State Depart-1 cent a magnificent pocket-chronometer, with I i gold vest chain attached. The chronometer I ,vus made by the celebrated Jurgcnsen, of 1 Copenhagen, and bears the following inscrip-1 :lon, vis: "Presented to Capt J. J. Ariansen, of the I Llansburg ship Hampden, by the President of I the United States, for his humane and gallant I :onduct in roscuing from shipwreck the mas-1 ter, passengers, and crew of the schooner I ?Scheerwater,' of Boston?1854." The chain represents a ship's cable, and is I very maBsive and beautiful. The whole cost I uf this so well-deserved testimonial is about! *350. AFinbOld Gentleman of this oity was I present at the firtt opening of Stanley's Pano-1 raina, some months ago, at the National The-1 atre, and he was observed there on the follow-1 ing night, and every night of exhibition He Lund? A thing of beauty is a Joy forwver." On the return cf the Panorama, our friend also ieturned, and has regularly appeared every night, thus far, at Odd-Fellows Hall. He declares that the picture is ever charm ing, ever new." Criminal Court.?Yesterday no cases were tried in this court. The jury in the case of Snipel, the German who was tried for attempt ing a rape on a child four years of age, was discharged yesterday at four o'clock, p. m., being unable to agree. George Simms, col ored, who was found guilty of a rape on his own daughter, was sentenced the day pre vious to fifteen yeans in the penitentiary. He went the voyage" yesterday. The Trass-Alleghany Bank ?The Alex andria Gazette gives an extraot from a letter, j addressed to a merohant of that city, which states that the Trans-Alleghany Bank is doing business, and redeeming its paper in the hard currency. Last wees it paid out $7,000 or $8,000 for its paper, and its offloers seem disposed and determined to meet any run that may be made upon it." Waibimtoit Wosbkahihip ?We saw this morning, at tha faatHp of Mr. Andrew Jo joe, on Fourteenth itnA carriage of hit own manufacture, whiah 4a*? great credit, Indeed, to the tute and skill ef Washington mechan ios, as construotora af each vehicles It weighs about 850 lbs only, though very solidly put together. The fore wheels ran nnder, and the body is so oonstructad as to make a perfectly close carriage for two persons in winter, and an open family carriage for four in summer. The pummelling, oushioning, lining, and other embellishments are ef the first class, being capitally designed and executed Tha prioe is $350. How tha manufacturer oan get up such a vehiole for that sum of money, in these times of high prioea, is past us to divine, though we are rather ineliaad to be somewhat "up to trap" in matters appertaining to tha menage. Freedom'? Echoes, or th? Htm* or Liber ty.?This baautiftal song, sung by Searoh of the Kunkels, Is daatined to rank with the Star SpAngled Banner, to inspiring and depicting patiiotism. "Carry!*# rma War into Africa."?A pitohed battle toak place last evening, about 8 o'clook, ia tha Savvnth Ward, among some "oulled puisons," in whish hard knocks, bloody noses, Ao., fl&rmed the principal fea tures. The oausa of the fight was some colored damsels had bean to a ball, or something of the kind, with one party, which roused the anger of a rival party, and they therefore met in conflict dire," determined to win or die." The matter was finally settled by one fellow bellowing miff! nuff!" and the con tending armies were drawn off It was too early for the guards, and tha police officers of that section were probably on other business. Prices op Flour and Bacon.?Some of our citizens have complained that dealers in these articles are charging too high, when the prioe they give for it is considered. In order that the prices given and obtained by our mer obams may be known to our friends, we have labored to lean them and with the following result: Familw, price given, $lft.25a$10 50; prioe obtained, $11.50a$ll.75. As to our in Sairies in regard to bacon, we learned that ealers have to giva $11 50a$12 per 100 for it, and sold at 13al4c. per pound This i3 mod erate. A Mild Winter Coming.?The early set ting in of extreme cold weather?for the mer cury has not been so low in tho first part of December for tha past thirty years?lead I some observers of meteorological symptoms, to imagine that we will have a mild winter, or that its extreme rigidity will be early broken, and an open spring gladden the earth. We sincerely trust this may be so. At the Navy Yard this Evening.?Bui I ard's Panorama of New York City, exhibits it Odd Fellows' Hall, Navy Yard, this evening ind to-morrow afternoon and evening, at 3 and Ti o'clock.
