[EVENING STAR. j LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Rock Crexe Ckxktirt ?The practice of Intermural interments has ever been a qae? tion of doubtfuljpropriety, chiefly, because of their injurious effect on the health of crowded communities. Apart from that consideration, however, there seems to be a peculiar ap propriateness in the selection of a burial place for the remain3 of those we hare hoaor ed and loved and associated with, where, in the deep silence and softening tranquility of nitare beyond the haunts and hum of busy ?3d worldly strife, the tears of sorrowing Mends may flow without interruption, and the meditative mind may prune and purify its desires, and shape its thought! to holy and heavenly visions, undistracted and alone. The i lea of a rural cemetery found its first practi cal embodiment in England in the formation ot a company, little more than twenty yearf ago, who purchased and appropriated to this object an area of about fifty acres not far dis* tant from London. Other establishments, near the principal oities, followed speedily in th? wake of this enterprise; and, more recently, we have designed and completed our Mount Auburn and Greenwood, and other publis burial grounds, on the same model Within the limits of our own District, also,we hive our Oak Hill and Glenwood Cemeteries and we rejoice to find that the same spirit of laudable enterprise has led the rector and ves try of the venerable Rock Creek church, three miles north of cur city, endowed to us by its ancient and honored associations to appropri ate and commence the laying out a large por tion of the glebe for a similar purpose. In the incipient stage of this bold undertaking they y have thus far been liberally supported by the inhabitants of the parish and others and its progress indicates a spirit and taste highly creditable to those who have planned and exe cuted the work. The sacred edifice which sheds its hallowing influence over the spot was visited by our great-grandsires in their boyhood, and subsequently by the generations which have sprung from them, and no fitter spot oould have been selected for the purpose for which it is designed, whether we regard the natural advantages of the situation or its suitableness for so solemn a purpose. All who can appreciate the attraction of roman tic scenery, and such a3 love retirement for a while for its own sake, or for its wholesome efieotsin pointing and training the thoughts to scenes beyond the grave, will, doubtless, be deeply interested in the carrying out to its completion a design so wisely conceived and so admirably begun. Tub Oms.buses? It will be perceived from an advertisement in our columns to-day, that the proprietor of the excellent lines of omni buses running between the foot of the Capitol and Georgetown, and between the junctioa of Pennsylvania avenue 8nd Sixth streets, and to the steamboats, has been forced by the present very high prices of hor.e feed, the in Oieased wages of his large number of em ployes, Ac., in self-defence to follow the ex ample of all the omnibus proprietors in the city of Baltimore, in adopting the custom which has long prevailed in New York in the matter of rates of fare. That is,?to decline hereafter issuing tickots, and to demand in all case*, and for all persons except children in arms, six cents for each ride. In the last six months, in this city, the price of hay has advanced from seventy cents to one dollar and thirty cents per hundred; oorn meal from sixty-five cents to one dollar and ten cents per burbel?these two articles being the principal food of the omnibus stock. The wages of employees in such business have ad vanced in the same time here about twenty fh per cent. These are all facts witbin our own knowledge, aad to our mind clearly j?_tify the changes which Mr. Vanderwerken proposes to make This must be the inevitable judgment of all sensible persons. These lines of omni buses, which have been capitally managed, have proved the greatest blessings imagin able to Washington and its vicinity. The in* creased cost of keeping them up has. of course, destroyed all profit from them at the rate of five cents, at which they have for the most J art been running. We are glad, indeed, that Ir. V. has determined to demand hereafter the full rate of six cents, rather than to with draw them from the service of tho public of Washington, Georgetown, and Alexandria, evidently the only other alternative. 1H8 Pictfbk Sale on Mondat Afternoon It will be seen, from our advertising col umns, that Mr. McGuire will sell at public auction, on next Monday afternoon, at fcur o'clock, the entire collection cf valuable paint ings whioh have been on free exhibition at Farnham's franklin Saloon during the week, and attracted crowds of visitors. It is one of the verj best collections which has been of fered to the Washington public, and comprises many pictures wh.ch would be considered gems" in any public or private galiery. It is particularly rich in workB of tho old Mas ters, and these attributed to ltuhens, Ostade, and Lordonio are of the very first order of merit; wh 1st ?.ho?e of the modern school, by Pyne, Shayer, and Thcs Cole, all of admitted authority, must challenge the admiration of cognoscenti Mr. Barton, who made the col lection, is a gentleman of fine ta3te and great experience, and tho public have an aaiuranoe, in his liberal character end fair dealing, ih?t he believes the pictures to be what he ieprc sents them to be The entire collection will, it is understood, be sold to tho highest bid ders, without reserve. Tn? Wrong Ones.?We yesterday noticed the robbery of about forty dollars from a trunk in a gentleman's room, in a hotel in this city. Yesterday two young men, employed in the hotel, were arrested on suspicion of having committed the robbery; but at their trial last evening it was clearly shown that neither of them could have had anything to do with iw Strong grounds of suspicion were, however, elicited against another individual, not yet arrested Ihe employers of the young men, the landlord and landlady united in giving excellent characters to them, and the gontle man who lost the money was woll pleased with their prompt dismissal by the examining ma gistrates, Messrs. Birch and Morsell. It is hoped that the real thief may be speedily ar rested and punished. Benefit of the Northern Liberties.? The benefit at the National Theatre on to morrow evening, promises to be the great bene fit ol the Beason. The Liberty boys don't al low themselves to bo eclipsed by anybody, therefore we anticipate a galaxy of youth, beauty and chivalry never before surpassed at the theatre, to-morrow (Saturday) evening. Master Adams has a truly beautiful fireman's song to ring on the occasion. Sale of the Beactifcl Residence of the late Thomas Ritchie.?The administrator's sale-of this spacious and beautiful mansion, whioh is soon to take place, bids fair to attract general attention. Its situation, for a fash ionable residence, is second to no other in I W ashington. fronting immediately on the north side of Lafayette ^uaro. The house was originally constructed under the immediate supervision of W. W. Corcoran, Erq., whose excellent taste and judgment in such matters are proverbial. It contains every requisite for a first class private house, and is in ail re spects the most desirable establishment for a private family, in society in Washington, now known to be for sale. Where will the poor widow, who perhaps at one time waa blessed with all the good things of this world's store," bat now in distress, find food and elothing fer herself and little ones, without the assistance of the charitable We are pleased to see the Ladies' Union Benevolent Society moving; so energeti cally in this matter, both in raising means of relief and seeking oat the deserving objects of charity. They have secured the services of oar two prinoipal musical societies, the Union Choir Association and the Philharmonio, both of which are how rehearsing for concerts, the proceeds to be devoted to oarrying oat the charitable designs of the ladies. The ooncert by the Union Choir will be given on Wednes day evening, the 20th December, in the new >hall of the Smithsonian Institution; that by the Philharmonic will be given early in Jan aory, probably at Carasi's Saloon. No tickets for the first named will be sold at the doar; all desiring to purchase tiokets, therefore, must do so before the night of the concert. Let all the charitably disposed now step for ward, for The drying up a Vngle tear hath more Of hone t lame, t-ian shedding seas of gore!" Last Time or Macbeth.?The really great burlesque on Macbeth, received with unusual demonstrations of delight at its previous rep resentations, will be produced this evening at the National, in addition to the splendid mu ?ical entertainment of Kunkel's Opora Troupe. It may not be amiss to state that Mr. Winder has wcrbmen at the theatre making suoh im provements as to render it highly comfortable, pleasant, and warm. Di.vner Parties.?Gautier advertises to send out his cooks, by the day, to get up din ners in private houses, and also to cater for the preparation of dinner parlies which pri vate persons may desire to give at Lome. The idea is a capital one indeed, as it will obviate nine tenths of the trouble of giving private dinner parties, and materially lessen the ex pense wherever he may bo called in. Those long in society are perfectly aware that a pro fessed cook, if he understands his business' thoroughly, saves far more to the host than it cos'.s to employ him for the ocoasion while it stands to reason that one must save money by employing an experienced caterer to make all the purchases necessary in providing the means of giving a handsome dinner. We take it for granted that Gautier will be over run this winter with such orders. Try him. The Call of the Season.?The Highland er's ball (a notice of which was mislaid yester day) which came off on Wednesday night, is acknowledged by all to have thus far beenfAr ball of the season. The saloon was crowded A more .joyous company never was looked upon. Every person looked happy. The dance, the joko, and laugh, kept the company together until the hours of morn came ana went They danced and danoed till broad day light. 05LY Two DATS HOBS IB WASHINGTON.? The Panorama of New York City, on exhibi tion at Odd Fellows' Hall, Seventh street, clones its exhibitions here to-morrow evening, it exhibits to-morrow afternoon, at J o'olock. The evening exhibition commences at 7i o'olock, KxroBT fob Noveybeb ?The reports of sixteen officers of the city police show the judgments and costs obtained during Novem ber to amount toil,179 39, and the judgments and costs collected $529 87. Dbovebs' Rest ?During the week, 600 bead of beef cattle arrived at this place from Virginia. Our butchers took 150 at $2 50 a $3 75 per 100 gross?450 head wore sent to Bal timore. Skeep were selling at $1.75. and hogs at $5 a $5.75. Watch Retcbks.?Last night there were but two lodgers in the guardhouse. This morning, at an early hour, Mr. Piggott found Mr. Louis F. Thomas lying at the door of a house on the Avenue, apparently severely in jurod by failing. Compassion induced Mr. P. to toke the unfortunate man to the guard hou-e, and the officers to look for his friends. Late this morning Mr. Thomas was still there, in a helpless condition and badly bruised. His fiiecds had not been found, and the effi cers did not know how to dispose of him. GEORGETOWN COttBESFOKDEffCK. Georgetown, Dec. 8, 1854. Oar citizens generally no doubt will be much gratified to learn that Bullard's groat work of art, the Panorama of New York city, will be exhibited here next week. Having had the pleasure of seeing it, we have no hesi tation in saying that, in poiut of correctness of design, and elegance of execution, it sur passes anything of the kind we have ever seen. We therefore advise all our citizens to go and j see it for themselves. We learn that the sudden and unexpected close of navigation, by ice upon our canal, will prevent a large quantity of fuel and pro duce, which has been collected at different points, lrom reaching our market for SQ.me time to come. Seme of our citizens bare commenced this morning laying in a supply of that great sum- j mer luxury?ice. Quantities are being taken from the canal basin nearly, if not quito, four inches thiok. We learn from a letter from the Rev. Thos Bewail to a friend in this oity, that the revival of religion in the Methodist Church at Goshen, aud other points on the Montgomery circuit, is still progressing finely. The next steamer's news is anxiously looked for by our fl\>ur merchants, and others who are anxious to hear from the condition cf the allied powers before Sebastopol. The weather continues ex'remeiy cold, an 1 we have fears that if it shall continue a few days longer navigation upon the river will be closed. JN'o change in the markets. Spectator or The Richmond Enquirer of Wednesday states that the convention of internal improve ment companies organised on Tuesday, in the Capitol, with Col. Edmund Fontaine in the chair. A committee, composed of the presi dents of the several railroad companies of the State, was appointed to prepare and bring in b^iinots for the aotion of the convention; and then, after some other preliminary business, the ccnvontion adjourned. One of the objects of the convention is a revision of the tariff of tolls. iy A correspondent of the Journal of Com merce urges the necessity of the adoption of signals on land to warn vessels of their prox imity to the shore in thick and foggy weather. He suggests that large guns be obtained on the most dangerous sections of the coa?t and sig nals given every hour when needed. We should doubt the feasibility of such a measure, on the ground that nautical men, in mistaking the reports of these guns for signals of distress might be very dangerously deceived. It is stated in the Boston Traveler, that Little Brown A Co., of Boston, have paid the family cf the late JuJge Story $150,000 for copyrights of the various works written by the Judge. His cepyrights have sometimes yielded his family $8,000 per annum. Of Daniel Webster's writings the same house has sold 50,000 volamcs; and of Bancroft's His tory of the United btates, 30,000 copies have already been sold. For one series of works (the Cambridge Mathematics,) they paid f 30, 000 for the copyright. It is thought that this single house now pays annually a larger sum to authors than was paid by all the publishers in the United States twenty-five years ago. py An exchange paper says: "A colporteur of the American Tract Society, who has labored for many years in Virginia, recently informed us that a much larger pro portion of the slave population of that State were consistent members of evangelical churohes, than of?any other class They are well provided for, physically and intellectual ly, and one of their churches in Riohmond is perhaps the moat numerous and well sustained of any in the South.'' ?r a?or??m P a h i c Mr. WHITKHr B8T hM-bM tVtrdid kaothwpnmliB for his superior DscnsrreotjrpM, sihlblUd at tfcs WorM's Ttir, H?w York.
