The following is the letter of Judge Edmonds, referred to lest week in the notice we made of Sams'a sermen. We have no doubt it will be read with pleas-1 ure, and we hope with thought and at-1 tention, as there are some points thatj may seem pew te the spiritual reader. I While we are yet in the infancy of me- diumship, and very imperfectly under-1 stand its philosophy, it behooves all to I be thoughtful and cautious in reading, that full justice may be done to all?the] spirit, the medium, and the thought com* I inunicated. We have much yet to learn 1 and unlearn N?w Yobk, Oct. 21,1854. I Dear 8ir: Perhaps, in your discourse I on the wreck of the Arctic, you would be J willing to have a more minute detail of I the events which I mentioned the other] day, and I will therefore give it to you. j For several days before we received the I news of the accident, an attempt was 1 made to communicate the event to my daughter, as she had been ay ear ago! taught the wreck of the San Francisco. I But it failed, because of her anxiety} about a relative of hers, who was at sea, I and with whom she associated the wreck I the moment the idea was presented to I her. Thus was produced confusion and I anxiety, which interfered with t*>e clear- J ness of the communication, though the) idea of the wreck was frequently and! vividly presented to her. On the day before tha arrival of the news, she had a call from a lady friend, who, in the course of her visit, became I entranced, and cave a graphic descrip-1 tion'of some of the scenes which we af-| terwards learned took place on board the I ill-fated steamer. But the comjnunica-1 tioo was interrupted, and thus only an I indefinite apprehension of some impend-! ing misfortune was produced. On the day after we received news of J the wreck, I returned home from my office late iu the afternoon, and fbrind my J friend Mr. J in my parlor with my I daughter. Some spirit was eommuni-1 eating through him. I gave my atten-1 tion to it, and then fa* about two hours! through him, through Laura, through! Mr. A who came in during the I evening, and through myself, we had the I intercourse with the passengers of thei Arctic, which I mentioned to you. I I imbioed the idea that there were! present with ug at least a hundred of! them, though only a few made them-1 selves known to us, or spoke to u?. N. B. Blunt, late District Attorney,! Bishop Wainwright, Isaac T. Hopper,] Dr. Cory, and others ef my spirit friends, I were also present, and occasionally spoke j through or to some of us. I plainly saw the whole assemblage, 11 Mid particularly one of them, with whom had been well acquainted. He was la-1 boring under great mental excitement.] fie exclaimed to me: "Go d God, Id I monds can this be true Is death bfter all, what you said it was, and is I this death? Can it be possible this isj the change which death, makes I answeredi "You see. You can judge] for yourself. Bring your own clear in-1 tellect to bear upon it, and you can un-1 derstand." 4 "But," he aaid, "where am I What 1 must I do Where am I going Is this to be always so I told him, "No, by no means is it to j be always so. But it will .be difficult I for me to tell you what to do, for I can-1 uot know all the circumstances that sur-| rouud you. But there is one close at hand who can tell you, and who can as-1 list you." "Who is that he asked. I answered, "Oar old friend, Blunt." I lie said "Nat Is he here Where? Let me see him. Let me hear from him where I am, and what I am to do." Thia conversation had thus far been! between me and that spirit direct, and j now Mr. Blunt came thr.ough my daugh-1 ter, and said: "Judge, tall him I am near at hand,! ready to assist him, and he has only j earnestly to wish if, u> see and hear me I himself. Now his mind is in such un I certainty and oonfusion, that neither his! brother nor I can make ourselves visi-1 bletohim." This being said to me in an audible 1 voice, was heard also by the spirit, who no longer paid any attention to me, but turned to where Blunt was, and soon tngaged in conversation with him. Others^ of those spirits then spoke to me. One said to me that his last thought on going down with the ship was, that in a few moments he should be re-united again to his wife and children, who went down withllim, tut he'said?and thirf so1 much astonished* "him?"When I aweke, I beheld my 'Wife and children passing away from me, in diffcmrt, directions, and 1 am left alone so near the earth! Is this to -be always so Am I never to see them again f And am I always to hover thosnear the earth?" Another, whom 1 had well known, saidto me# with a good deal of .emotion, "Friend Edmonds, ia it true, then, thi* which I always thougi.t an illusion c thy insane mind i It truly seems so. 1 THE WEEKLY STAR. Ob tell me what all this hers means, aad what am I to do f" I referred him to Father 'Jlopper; who Wac present, and who could instruct him bettor than I could. He shrank from this and reminded me that he and Mr. Hopper had not agreed very well upon earth, having had some difficulty with each other "in meeting"?that is, in the rehgioug society. Mr. Hopper then spoke to me through Laura, and bade me re-assure him that no unpleasant recollection of the past dwelt upon his mind that be was ready to help him "and," he added, "tell him Judge that I will be jast as quick now to take him ia as he was to turn me out of meeting. Tell him so, Judge, will jrtju t" In reply, I said, "I need not repeat it, for he hears what yen say through the medium. But your allusion to the old difficulties disturbs him." "Tell him, never mind that, it is only a matter to be laughed at now, and I de sire only to befriend him and set his mind at ease." "Yes," I said, "old friend, that you have already done, for he holds out his hand to you.'* And the two passed away together from my view. One of the sailors spoke to me, and. though a man of not as much education art the others, he was evidently more at home and more at ease than they were. He said that after the collision be had not thought of himself, until the raft Hhoved off from the ship. He had been very busy trying to stop the leak and when all work on that ceased, it hal oc curred to him that he ought to save him self that he had an aged mother, a wife and some children in New York, and he asked himself?"What will they do this Winter without me and so he jumped from the ship to reach the raft; but lie fell short, and sank in the water. Ilo came up under the raft, and his bead bumped against it till he was drowned. There was much less agitation in him than in the others, and I obtained from him a clear account ol several things. He spoke in great admiration of the efforts on beard the ship of the one who tirst spoke to us; said he took a com mand and directed much that was done. He was oool, collected, and energetic, and made hiaiself felt and obeyed where ever he went. He also spoke of the general deport ment when all hope of saving themselves was abandoned. Be said the sight was really sublime. A deathlike stillness reigned, and oalm came ever them all, as if each was quietly bracing himself to meet his destiny. I asked him how it happened that they so many of them came to us, and if he had not yet met any of the inhabitants of the spirit world besides those who had entered it with him He answered yes his fkther and two other relatives had come to him and wel eomed him,and then told him to go with the others and learn what he oould. He could not give me his name, or the street where he resided. There was no medium present through whom the abstract idea of a name could be given. Among thr?8e who spoke to me was a female. She was very cheerful and pleas ant, and, from what she said, it was manifest that her thoughts in life had been more for others than for herself. She understood more cleaily the condition in which she found herself, and had come with the othen more to aid them than herself. Bishop Wainwright, thought Mr. J., uttered a most touching and impressive praver. And, finally, there spoke to me the spirit of a man who said he was a Euro pean, whose name was unknown to me, but mine waa not unknown to him. 11c had already given some attention to the spiritual philosophy, and had found in it uiuch that was consonant with his rea son, with his instincts, and with what tie had learned of nature, (and that was not a little, for he was evidently an edu cated man.) He had been on his way to this coun try on business, and had intended, when here to call on me. He said that his be lief had been of vast service to him, for it had not only robbed death of its ter rors, but it had enabled him, on entering bis new existence to understand his posi tion, and to ksow where he was. Ue had not, therefore, shared the amazement, ex citement, and oonfusion of mind which bad so much disturbed others. When that large number of persons had iwaked to consciousness in the spirit world, and were am&sed at the condition in which they found themselves, a voice had spoken to them, 6aying: "'ihe gate* of death have been apened to you. Now let the gates of eternal life be likewise apened to ya. Go ye to earth again, and learn there how to enter them!" They had, accordingly, come to earth, and scattering in various directions, had sought the mediums on this continent, lienoe it was that so large a number was now with us. He said that I could form no just con ception of the condition in which they found themselves. No two were alike. In some, blank amazement stupefied in some, terror and uncertainty assumed die form of the excitement ot insanity in some, there was a stolid, hardened in difference; in some a happy confidence as to the future, without knowing why and in a few there was a knowledge, im bibed on earth, which inspired hope and confidence. They were most cheerful and hoping who, on earth, had been least sel fish, and most active in their efforts for others. They were, he said, surrounded by bright spiritp, who were willing to aid them; but, having been cut off from mor tal life suddenly, and without the wean ing from earthly lies which oid age OH Fie* j

The Viceroy of Egypt has lately o-dered five thousand ef them for the equip ment of his cavalry; and the British Beard of Ordnance dispatched, some time ago, ten thou faMid to the Baltio fleet. A desperate battle was fought on the Ohio river lately near Louisville, between two parties, hunters and raftsmen, who had been over the river hunting. The hunters fired discharges from their long guns and the rafts men used short sizes and revolvers. One of the hunters, named Ray, was wounded in the arm and breast, and both the raftsmen were crippled and compelled to beat a retreat. The battle was commenced by the raftsmen run ning into the other party and striking them with their oars. Hunting must be an agree able oport in that vioinity. Hartford, Conn., on Saturday last, was the theatre of great exoitement, growing out of the refusal of the Roman Catholic Bishop to allow the remains of Father Brady to be buried near the ohuroh. In oonsequenoe df some difficulty with Brady, the Bishop had sus pended him, and the treatment the latter had received is believed to have induced the dis ease with whioh he died. The people, siding with their former pastor, determined that he should be buried near the ohuroh, as he had requested, and on Friday afternoon they had dug a large plaoe for the purpose of building a reoeptacle for the ooffin. This morning the hole was found to have been filled up by the orders of the Bishop; but the peo ple were not to be defeated, and, despite the efforts of the Bishop and priests, suooeeded in again opening it The Bishop then refused to open the church for the funeral servioe; but, after an hour's delay, the people again suooeeded, and the ohuroh was opened, when it wes fonnd that the altar was so fixed that mass could not be eelebrated. The recent advance in the value of reel es tate in our oity differs in one very important particular from the advance whioh has oo oarred in nearly all the dties, email and large, In this aeetion of the Union, and is one that is not likely to he affected to any extent, if at all, by any pressure in the money market or bank panie that may oocar. While, in most a sen, the advance elsewhere has been brought about mainly by a speculative demand, whioh most of necessity be checked to a greater or less extent by any interruption in the money mar ket, nothing of the kind has existed in George town. There has been no speculative demand. Every one of the many sales which has oc curred has been to aotaal settlers, eld red dents, who, through industry and frugality, have saved sufficient to enable them to bay or build, either to rent or to beoocupied by them selves; or to persons from elsewhere, who have been drawn here and have become resi dents, by the tide of prosperity which has at tended the efforts of our enterprising mer chants and mechanics for the last several years, consequently the advance must be per manent, and inorease rather diminish. Our location furnishes many natural advan tages for mercantile or manufacturing opera tions, facilities for reaching our market are constantly improving, navigation upon our Canal is growing more permanent and less liable to interruption from breaks every year The finanoial oonditien of our Corporation, banks, merohants, and manufacturers (mainly of flout) never was in a more safe and healthy oondUion, consequently business must con tinue to inorease, and in the same ratio that I business iuoreases will the demand for and value of real property inorease. r SVENINC STAR. LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Th? Rac? on Satubdat.?Ob Saturday last qaite a orowd met oa the Columbia oourse to witness a match rao* for $500?nil* h*ata? bmtw?n Mr. Maddoek's sorrel mar*, Mary Pay?*, and Mr. Suit's bay bom, John Gra ham, which wat advertised t* tak* place at 1 o'olook; bat for >om* oause unexplained, of oourse, the spectators war* k*pt waiting la the eold till nearly S before to* horses were brought to the poet. There waa rerj little betting. The friends Of the mar* would hare beoked h?r freely at even money, bat as there was no odds offered, th* friends of the horse played shy. On t?e word "go" being given, an even start was *ff*et*d, th* ridsr of John Or ah am racing for th* lead from th* jump, which he slightly obtained on rounding the corner, bat before they bad reached the quarter-pole, th* mar* shot ah*ad, was never afterwards ap proached, and passed the jadges stand hard h*ld" six lengths ahead of her opponent. Time, 2 minutes, 1} second John Graham lost a plate or plates, was taken off the ground, and the mare galloped over the sours* alone for th* second heat, and won the match. la consequence of the disparity in the riders and the ab**nc* of scale* and weights w* wer* led to inquire into the conditions of the match as regarded th* right. Each bono had to carry and was informed that John Graham was to ?arry 1251b*. and th* mar* 113 lbs. The rider of th* former was a fair sized man, who, with saddle and bridle could not have weighed less than 10 lbs. over the stipulated weight and /that ef the latter, a light boy who had a light saddle with no iztra weight save a damp sad dle cloth and who oould not have weighed 100 pounds. Surely Mr. Suit must have entertained a high opinion ef the speed and weight-oarry ing sapahilities of his little hors*, *re he would, with any hepe of success, venture to put so much weight to any four legged animal having the slightest pretention to th* nam* of race-hone. The balanoe of the evening was filled up with several scrub-races, which afforded more amusement to the spectators than the match raoe. It is more than probable that several races will take place this week as there are se?eral blooded horses on the ooorse. Gas at Impboybmbnt ih Rooviho ?As a matter of valuable information to the thou sands of readers of the Star who are interested in th* improvements of th* day, especially in rendering our publio buildings and private residences impervious to the changes of the weather, we woald state that there will be placed on exhibition at the Metropolitan Me dians' Fair, shortly to be held in this city, and for which great preparations are being made by oar artisans to make it the grandest affair of the kind poasibl*, a specimen of cop per roofing, to whieh no repairs will be needed for fifty yart. This is the invention of a Washington mechanic?Mr. Joseph F. Hodg son?and he guarantees that during that time it will be perfectly water proof. The expan sion and contraction are provided for on scien tific principles, and the roofing is adjusted in such a manner that a leak in it is impossible. This improvement will be the means of saving tens of thousands of dollars in repairs simply. Balls this wbbk.?The pleasure-seeker will find plenty of opportunities of gratifying himself tnis week. In addition to other amuse ment, two of our fine military companies and one of our popular clubs give their annual balls. That of the Boone Riflemen takes place at the New Odd Fellowa' Hall, near the Navy Yard, on Wednesday night, and the Arlington Club on the same night at Carusi's Saloon. The President's Mounted Guards will have their annusl ball on Thursday night, at Odd Fel lows Hall. From the seal manifest by the different committees of arrangements we can promise a delightful entertainment to those who may attend. Our friends in Alexandria will bear in mind that the popular company of Mount Vernon Guards also give their annual ball at Serepta Hall on Wednesday night. A Diffbrbscb w Lsoislatiom.?M*ssr?. Editor?: Can you inform us why a different mode of legislation should be pursued with different sections of the city Or, if the coun cils have not legislated differently for differ ent sections? Why are not the tavern laws" enforced in other sections as they are in the oentral wards. Respectfully, A Suffbbbb. Washington, Nov. 30,1854. We think It was the intention of our city fathers, in enacting the laws referred to, that they should bear equally on all parts of our city if there is any partiality, it is evidently the fault of the executors of the laws. As to the reason why the laws aae enforced in some parts of the oity and not in others we vespocd, we don't knew." Ybsvbbdat.??he churches of Washington were all well attended yesterday, though the day was disagreeably oo'd and blustering Few cities of its siie on the oeast contain so large a church-going population as ours. This nay be owing to the act, that this being the political metropolis of the Union, every de nomination of Christians among aa seek to keep here as clergymen gentlemen of fine abilities and high reputation. They are, nearly all of them, oapable of offering, whenever they preach, an intellectual treat to all who will attend eherch, if but to hear an able preacher, there being here, as elsewhere, a large olass who go to the house ef Ged for that purpose principally they are among the most regular attendants upon public worship among us. Thaiks?ivibo a*d Tin Washington Mob rsBst ?We have had maay urgent request* to do our best to induoe the various clergymen In Washington to take up collections on Thanksgiving day in their respective churches, for the completion of the Washington Monu ment. We need hardly remark that the oc casion is precisely the proper one for taking up oelleottons to that end. We are to give thanks for the manifold blessings we enjoy, and surely we owe a very large portion of them to the labors of George Washington, onder Providence. If we fail to observe his preeepts, our prospects for future national prosperity and happiness, must fade away. Under such circumstances, it becomes emi nently a religious daty for oar ohurohes to Vtrive to perpetuate upon the popular mind, veneration for his oharacter *r>d devotion to his wise, patriotic and conscientious principles. Tu Kuikb^s cannot fail to have a great bouse to-night, at the National Theatre, as they oome baok among us with all their old favorites of Washington still connected with them. It is very eertain that no other band of Ethiopian minstrels have ever maintained such popularity here as the Kunkels. Yet they have given far more oencerts in this oity than any other band. Their sucoess when last here?in the middle of the recess? was unprecedented. If they draw crammed houses in Washington at suoh a dull season, what will they not do now, when all persons are brushing up in anticipation of the busy times ahead, and with three or four times as many strangers in the oity as when they were last here Laaaa Fchbbal ?Yesterday aboat I o'olk. we saw on* of th* largest colored funerals passing along Pennsylvania Avenue, we ever t>ehel ?"t side. [rOSCLrDED FROJt first rvoe-J protracted disease always produce, their earthly feelings were still predominant with many, and, in connection with the excitement, confusion and uncertainty prevailing in their minds, Tendered them inaccessible to the approach of those brighter spirits. "Why," he added, ??we do not all even see each other, though hovering thus together around you/ We have, as it were, a dim con sciousness of each other's presence, and,, through the instrumentality of the me diums, we hear and converse with you and with each other. For this purpose it is that wq are conducted here by our spirit-guides, tnat we may learn our true condition, and, through mortal means, unlearn the errors which our mortal life, has instilled into us. Speak, then, Judge, to them. You they all can hear, and from your lips they may early learn the lesson of the realities before them, which, sooner or later, they must all learn. Speak plainly, but gently, for oh. you know not how much of sorrow anu an xiety there is in the hearts which you can i thus relieve." I accordingly for a few moments spoke to them. I reasoned with them of the great doctrine of progression which is now being revealed to man. I reminded them that from birth their life had been one of progression, and now they could readily perceive tliat that life still con tinued, and with it must continue the lniiuence of that law of progression. It was of importance to them to know this, for then, and only then, could they know how to direct their action wisely and well. And, fortunately for them, they were now in a condition where they could ascertain, if they would, how true or false this teaching was. So, too, if they became satisfied of that, they could readily learn the law by which that progression could be most ad vanced or retarded. That law was love ?love of God and of one another, to be manifested not in profession only, but in active efforts to do good to one another. That could be done by them in the spirit life a> well, and even better, than in their mortal existence. So. too, I told them that they were surrounded by bright and beautiful spir its who are ready to take them to their arms, to teach them the holy truths v hi eh are now also being revealed to man u{>on earth, and to point them the way to happier realms, which they may in time attain. And I assured them that they had but to make themselves accessi ble to their spirit friends, by earnestly desiring their presence and aid, to enjoy tiie inestimable assistance which could *-oon dispel the gloom of doubt and un certainty, and open to their vision a bright and holy light from above. I told them that I did not ask them to receive these things as true because I said so, but to examine for themselves, with all the advantages which they now possessed, and to judge for themselves. It could do no harm thus to investigate, but if, on investigation, they should find that 1 was correct, they would also find much that would be of inestimable value to them. Something more to the same effect I said, and, commending them in a few words to the protection of our Heavenly rather and the guardian care of the bright spirits who were around them, 1 closed the interview and they faded from my view.
