Bonc'ude that discontent with the Government j was never more rife among the Creoles of the j island than at present, and that they are I straining every nerve 83 to strengthen them a Ives at home as that they will shortly be able to obtain their iighta without material aid from those in this country sympathising with them. Had they two years ago made up their minds to put their own shoulders to the wheel without relying on the aid of the filli bustering Hercules, the probability is that they would by this time be far nearer the at tainment of their independence than at pres ent. On the gth inst., news reached Havana Barracoa, at the east end of the island, of the seizure of two American schooners. Both were laden with arms One of them landed h?r cargo, which was secreted beyond the reach ol the authorities before she was seized The other's cargo fell into the hands of the Government. W hen seized, they were in charge of two Creoles of the island, who were imme diately arrested and imprisoned They set fire to the prison, and one wa8 shot in attempt ing to escape; the other being re-taken. The Cabinet Council To-day .?Among the men around town, it appears to be understood that the regular Cabinet Council of this morn ing was princi pally upon the Soule affair. I lhe indictment, charging the prisoner with Killing Michael Kiggins, in July last, by striking him a Mow with a stick, and causing a wound, was r?ad, with a statement that the prisoner had plead not guilty The Commonwealth's attorney opened the case explained ihe law in regard to murder, its grades, and their difference; drew out at leng.h the chain of circumstances by which the Commonwealth propose to connec: the prisoner with the murder; argued the abso lute necessity of admitting circumstantial evi dence, and adverted to the fact that, with all the diligence the Commonwealth had used, had found no single clue to connect this murder wi;h any one but the prisoner. G. W. Brent, for the defence, adverted to the family of je fliisouer, the providential visitations to his household since his commit ment as circumstances calling on the jury to weigh the case well. He never knew a pr ^se cution more flimsy, and pursued with more de termined rigor. The factory company and the City Council had joined in the ch ise of the murderer. Look huw suspicion had changed i?irst the bro her of the prisoner wa?- arrested and discharged, and then his father, and now himself stands charged with the crime The Commonwealth had hist to prove that a mur der had been committed. This had not been done. The mere finding of a dead body was no evidence that they must show clearly that the prisoner was the murderer. This they could not make out. Their whole case rested upon threats and the cap. On the first, the evidence of Brad y shows he made the same threat* himself, and to the second the Com monwealth^ evidence was vague and contra dictory. ^he person who ran wore dark clothes and a Kossuth hat. Now if that was Arlington, how could this be his cap? Tho Commonwealth had waived the hypothesis which they proposed to prove by this chain of evidence, .a rnngton could prove he was homo at eleven o clojk; after that, the only person who could know where ue was, (his wife.) was an incompetent witness. He called upon the jury to watch the case narrowly. Dr. M. M Lewes, sworn?saw the body of the deceased on the morning of the murder it was lying on its side; the head exhibiting a wound on one side about an inch by six inches, inflicted it seemed by some weapon like a stick of wood in the hands of a strong man; this wound was sufficient to cause death. EVENING STAR. LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Washington Interests? It is sincerely to I b? hoped that oar fellow-oitizens of Washing- I ton and Georgetown will appreciate the import- I auce of harmonising upon the many questions I of expenditure for improvements in this quar- I ter, which are to come before Cong"e?a this I winter. A want of harmony did much against the interests of the District at the last session, I the iDjury being principally inflicted by iodi I viduuls bent on making speculations for their I own pockets out of the success of schemes run- j ning counter to the plans of the authorities for I the advantage of the community at lar clerks,*' to the amount of ten or cwenty I J thousand dollars! Wonder if she has not]) come it over reporters also? If she has, we advise the poor sufferers to board it out. Ice.?The cargo of ice which Mr. L J. Middleton has recently received and is now selling, is a curio?ity well worth viewing, in bulk in his large ice bouse; being by long odds the clearest and most inviting of the handicraft of Jack Frost at the North ever imported into Washington city. Distingtished Arrivals.?It will be gesn by reference to our advertising columns thai the celebrated French Giant aRu the Ameri can Giautesi. have arrived, and will give their levees at Jackson Ilall, commencing this af ternoon. Tbb Ku.nkels.?Do, for the K?nkels they are to be among us again on Monday next, without fail. Municipal?Mayor Towers has net yet re turned from his northern tiip Dis pro ten: Silas II. The Mayor's office there fore, is "in a dmglin way," just now. X The Parrows? This excellent burlesque operatic troupe will remain with us but three nights longer. Since they have been with us they have made many friends. Their sirging, acting, and musical performances are highly spoken of. We are pleased to find that their soirees are well attended. The Glastz Brothers.?The brothers Giants, one oi whomshoiMr Duvall, ef Bla densburg, some weeks siuce. have been pre sented by the grand jury of Priuce Geor: e's county?the elder for an assault, the younger for aa assault and battery on Mr E. W. Duvall They are released upon small bail, and are now in the city. Ball or the Empire* ?The ball of the Empire Club, which came off last night, was well aiteiided, and conducted witu the great est propriety. Ail present had a lively and agreeable time of it. "Tne buys danced, and danced till broad daylight, and went home with the girls in the morning." 'The Poob ?In pa.-sing through the city we Frequently meet witn children in very miser able conditions Poverty is no ciime. but very inconvenient. V\ e hope of our benevo lent societies will take ihe little ones iu hand, and supply thein with r-hoes and clothes. Hats.?llats, did you say Talking a^ut hats reminds us that our friend Evans, Ponn s>lvama avenue, has hats >-f all descriptions, for sale low.
