One of tnc patrol lost liis jack knife in the scrape. The affair has created no little excitement, and will probably lead to acall forl'nited States troops! Seriously, there is a dreadful thirst for blood here among all parties, and 1 am satisfied that nothing would more effectually allay the excitement which lias been raging here so long, and cool down the two hostile factions sooner, than a grand set-to between (he two contending forces, and I do most sincerely hone that it will soon come off. Tiik Watst-ite?Ixinn John Hay.?During the last two days, the guns from the big sliipa off the Battery, have been sounding salutes at intervals, since the arrival Of the Warspite, in giving honor to different visiters of distinction. Lord John Hay, commander of the Warspite, visited the North Carolina yesterday morning, when fouiteen guns were fired. As we saw this gallant officer in full uniform and one sleeve hanging, step from the barge at the Caatle Garden, it brought to mind some thrilling incidents of the late war. Capt. Hay Was a midshipman on board the Shannon, when she captured the Chesapenke, commanded by Capt. Lawrence, who with the brave Ludlow, died fighting on the deck. At that time the great speculation in Morris Canal came up, and in an eril hour a professed friend induced Mr. Schemisrhorn to speculate in that stock. He was unfortunate, and in a fewdays the savings of fourteen^ w,besides a small balance, were sunk. This shock had a powerful effect upon him and he took from the company a small sum, intending of course to return it. That sum eventually swelled to over $100,000?it consisted of 800 shares of stock issued, which is worth almut $-10,000, and the remainder was concealed by forced balances of his bills receivable. In the ten years which have elapsed since his Arst false step, Mr. Scher merhorn has been exceedingly frugal in his expenses, and his little savings have been passed to the credit of the company. The change w hich has taken place in the nature of the insurance business has led to the winding up of the company, when the stockholders were to hsve been paid of!. The approach of this event rendered longer concealment impossible, and Mr. Schnrmerhorn voluntarily diactosed the whole. The value of the stock in the market has been 80 per cent; to-day, however, '10 per cent was offered for it. A morning paper, in remarking upon this all'air, has the following Mr. Sohermerhorn, feeling that he could no longer avoid detection, and that the rvhbery he had committed must become known, confeased to the officers of the com pany tnat ne nan emoeizien, or mora properly speaking. tialin a majority ofits capital. "He allege* that in 1832 h* was induced to purchase a quantity of Delaware and Hudson Canal Stock, the lo*s upon which exceeded hi* ability to meet, and ha took, from the Company the bin unt necessary to make up his deficiency The writer of Ihi* probably c id not choose to remember there i? any such stock as Morrla Canal," therefore he stated it Delaware and ilxdwm. Now, the terms used in peaking of the transaction, are po .?ibly just, but a here is the moral difference between 'hia operation and that of an editor, who cornea into Waii stre speculates in Morris Canal trt'/A Ik* money of the icylt, loses a large balance 1 which he refuses to pay, and uremnaily takes the bonefi of the act to settle the acccint?
