Hoxie'e claims are founded ntin-ly upon his vocal powers and performances, at as the duties of Postmaster are not executed acDfding to the gamut, he can hardly expect te sing imself into an office so lucrative sad important. The hostility to Mr. Bleodgood among a certain lass in New York, has stimulated his friends te ioreased activity, and every c(Tort to prejudice him 'ith the appointing power, has been promptly met nd thwarted. The only objection to which any articular importance was attached, rested on the ict that he lias not always been a resident of the ity ot New York. This has been entirely obviad. He took a residence ia your city some tune go, and has been active in many public matters retting to its interests, sctrng with its citiaene, and npelled by similar considerations. The public may rest assured there is no fancy in these assertions. _ w- All Mst Try it Faaa or Charob? The Compound el Grand jean is employed with great success io the radical cure of all diseases of the hair, baid heads, he. It is also a powerful dtaolvsnt, and admirably decomposes the substance which causes the hair te turn gray. During the tea years which 1 have resided in America, I have ebserved, and my profession compels me to deprecate the erroneous applications resorted to in the treatment of the hair. 1 will make a statement la the case of children; they resemble the tender plant, which increases in strength and beauty, according to I the degree of care or cultivation it receives in eeriy growtn. Tbe custom oi washing the heads of children in cold water, with whiskey, brandy, oau de-cologne, rem, ho., is most injurious to the hair. They require the occasional use oe some generous composition, in prcferencete applications of such corrosive and spirituous liquids. Water, the mildeat, and peihapethe least 1 likely to affect the hair,Is very injurious. It dries the hair, and turns it rod it mades it coarse, and causes it lb fail, and likewise destroys the roots; lastly, it creates 1 rheanutic patns in a word, water, and ail spirituous liquids, sre extremely destructive to the hair. I think I may stata with certuinty, that out of a hnn' dred families, ninety-live are inthababit of employing one or more ot these spirits. But de we not frequently meet with young persons of eighteen or twenty years, r and even prior to tuis age, who, instead of possessing the 1 full and glossy ringlets adapted to yonth, have,by these injurious applications, reduced their hair to pale color. wnich is tbe surest evidence of decay And why should t a bountiful and indulgent nature have deprived the in; habitants of this country of so beautiful and valnabla an ornament 1 Is it natural then, at this early period of their existence, they should be compelled to have recourse to artificial expedients 7 How mach dread and diaamy must they not expeiience at the thoughtof wearing a wig or of dyeing the hair Ofdyeing tho hair Undoubtedly this is your only rsmedy, unless you hsvo the good fortune to meet with an artist, whs by his close imitation of nature, is enabled to deeeivo the ...oil pier cing eye if not,you w 11 be compelled to make use of wkatever the most infamous auacksrv can invent. Be fore you reeolve to dye the heir, in -imitation of thote dark eye brnwa, reflect that ail these powders and li qnidt contain the most injurious substances. But these cruel inventions, though applied with the strictest care, are inevitably discovered by the different shades they present. To apply this infernal composition, we must, once a month, call in the asaiatanceof an adept of this dreadfol art. By omitting to do this, the h ir, instead of retaining its glossy tinge, assumes the most indescribable eolois, red, blue, violet, green, and in some cases the color of the flame ol burning spiiits. The consequences have now unfolddethemselves. Thn disease of gray hais is brought on by a few causes fear, or sudden fright, grief, and fractuti-s of the skull, which are sometimes covered with gray hair. I could rite many examples in proof of this statement, ii a truth so wall known required suy. There are few persons who have not seen,or heard the (act, that the hair haa been chanKid from block to white in the course of one night and at it haa been caused by sudden frjght. In the third exception, the fail is produced by a variety if causes, most of which can bo guarded against; by intemperance and ncesa of all kinds?by severe etudy to e late hour?by the use of so.pand water, md all spirituous liquids?by wearing caps?end by frequent application of the curling irons?by neglecting to cut the hair, and thus weakening the roots? i also, by those diseases which effect the vetcbral column, the stomerh.?r?he *r?in?and lastly, by too frequent a g uic ot the brush. Bartleu r attention should be paid to tse cuoicr 01 this article. Tho hard brush, usually preferred, ia in reality suited to vury few. It certainly 1 eleura the heed of a large portion of dandriff, but in what manner T it force* it from the shin b-fore it has arrived at a proper head the violence of the remedy I produces a fresh irritation, which increases the loss ol tb> hair, and fatigues the roots. The truth of this is evident, from the fact, that after clearing the head of the f dendrin by the uau of tha hard hrutb, an increased quantity ia sure to spring up in the course of two 01 three day*. I can convince tho?e that are detirona of consulting me, that this can, in most cases, be avoided. 1 Private room for ladles. No. 1 Barciav atreat. That institution it will he remembered, was constituted a fiscal agent, at the same time of the Bank of Commerce ia this city. It appears the attachment was made under a fi. fa., issued fiom the United Statea Court at Philadelphia, directed to the Marshal of New Orleans District. All the assets assigned by the Bank of United States were seized, to aatisiy a judgment in favor of the Oavernment for $051,000, most of which assets were in the vaults of the Merchants'Bank, for safe keeping; and an attachment was issued, under prooeas from the Commercial Court of New Orleans, on a suit entered by the United States, for the aam of nearly two millions of dollars. Under the i. fa. the Marshal threatened to seizo the assets belonging to the Merchants' Bank. On application, however, to the United States Court, Judge McCaleb at onoe granted an injunction to stay all proceedings against the Merchant's Bank under the 1. fa.; and Judge Watts issued a similar injunction under the attachment. In the mean time the assets assigned by the Bank of United Btatea ware takan.by the Marshal, and nre now in his charge, andthe Meichants' Bauk and all htr business and assets remain in her own possession, and her business goes on as yet. The question at re gardsthe assets assigned to trustees by the Bank of the United Statea, will af course undergo the usual and regalar judicial invaatigation. A very namerous meeting of the eitizena of Montgomery County, Illinois, was reeently held, E. Whittea, Esq. in the ohair, ta take into consideration the financial condition of tho country. The meeting was addreaeedby Messrs. A. Kitchell, H. Rountree, F. H. Hereford, W. Kitcheil andC. B. Block burger, when the following resolutions were unanimously puased X. That we will hereafter nssstt u mi a for National IJ V..I 1 J.k. f or SMIC Duwe, K IUI u IB latoi UI a iiauuuai acui-vi w increasing our own State indebtedness?or of issuing anymore State bond* for any purpose whatever?or of taxing the people at (Kit time a eing*e cent far the payment of illiriil or ptincipal on the vartaue demand* now against the State, or at any other time for t' e payment of demands further than the people have rtc.ticed on adequate and va.'uahle confederation. i That wo will not support any candidate for office, State or National, who will not declare himself in favor of compelling all banking institutions to au immediate and continued payment, on demand, of their note* in gold and silver coin. These resolutions contain the spirit of tho repudiating doctrines that are so flut, and 10 rapidly spreading throughout the west end south. Lord Ashburton will find it difficult to meet this disposition among the people, The Bank of Pennsylvania, it appears, hae been closed under an injunction, iaeaed at tha suit of the Governor, on behalf of the State, as one of the depositors. The mo* ney deposited was said to bo funds appropriated to the payment of the interest due to day, and which had been more than half uaed by the inatituUon, to meet its own necessities; and consequently the State has foiled. The whole affair is n very mysterious one. It appears the Governor waa in the bank, and in daily correspondence with it before this explosion took place; and that the bank actaally closed its doors on a notice from the Governor, before the injunction waa issued, thereby show ing e secret understanding.. Similar transactions took place iu relation to the Uuited States Bank, in the foil of 1630. It is highly improbable that if the Bank of Pen a ylvania had tha eash on hand to pay out to the holder of State stock, tha other banks would hsru discredited it; but if it waa to poy out its own irredeemable paper, and thus flood the city, they would, of course, try to prevent it.
