The other Com- panies are willing torun through for a regular fare of three cents a mile; this one, which has by far the most valuable und productive section of the entire route, clings to a higher vate. Time would fail us to chronicle a tithe of the performances by which the day was ebserved Perhaps the most notable was the intredaction of the Croton water into the great reservoir at Ferty- second-street. Some few of our early rising citizens were also present. The Mayor and Common Council did not reach the ground, however, until about 6 o'clock. The water, as might be expected, was at first muddy and impure; but it sson became clear ms at the beautiful river from which it com- mences its jouraeying on its mission of mercy to the dwellers in the city. Finding that the Man- hattan reservoir at the comer of Bleecker and Mercer-strests was empty, the Mayor requested that the Croton water might be introduced into the Corporation pipes to afford a supply in eaze of fire, as such an event was especially to be feared on the Fourth. After necessary openings had been made in the pipes between the reservoir and Union "ace, ta allow the sir to escape, the gates were hoisted and in the course of the day the Manlat- tan reservoir, as well as the tanks above, was filled to cverflowing. During the day some tw enty-five thousand persons visited the reservoir; and yet, we are rejoiced to say, no accident occurred to mar the joy of the occasion. Had not cold water been the only liquor admitted, we should without doubt have been obliged to chronicle a far different result. At precisely twelve o'clock a salute of thirteen gums pealed forth from the fort on Governor's Isl. and—which was echoed by the war frigates North Carolina and Columbia and returned by the Brit. ish razee, Warepite, lying off the Battery. A few minutes after the last gun had roared from the Warspite a small craft, moored between the North Carolina and the Battery, was taken in tow by a hoat from the former, and had scarcely moved from her position when a monstrous jet of muddy water was thrown up high in the air, and when it fell the craft had utterly disappeared. Not a fragment of it larger than a billet of fire-wood was any where to be seen. It was the triumphant result of an ex- periment made by Mr. Samus Corr, at the ex- pense of the General Government with an engine of destruction he has Justinvented. The vessel on which the experiment was tried was an old gunboat from Lake Champlain, filled with mbbish. The magazine contained some two hundred pounds of powder and was placed directly beneath the gun- boat at a depth of 12 or fifteen feet. A wire ex- tended from this to the deck of the North Caro- lina, two or three hundred yards distant. At the appointed moment Mr. Colt, who conducted the experiment with Professor Morse and Dr. Fisher, brought the plates of his voltaic pile into contact, and quicker than thought the old gunboat vanished into thin air. The experiment was completely successful and was witnessed by tens of thousands trom the Battery. Frauklin Kasmira, another boy, was maimed in the left hand by the discharge of a pistol. On the Battery, during the review, the wadding from a horse pistol discharged by a boy, went through one side of gentleman's hat and came out at the other, scaring the wwner not a little. thaouzh fortunately he escaped unhurt. Ollicer Stephens, in the evening, went to his desk in which some person without his knowledge had placed a loaded pistol furnished with a hair spring: while turning over his papers the pistol was discharged, and the ball just grazing his fore- head passed through the brim of bis hat and then through the upper part of the crown. THis was certainly a narrow escape. The celebration on the whole went off finely. For our own part (if the bull is allowable) having litle taste for the amell of gun-powder and less tor the nowse of a city celebration, we made a most pleasant excursion to the Passaic Falls at Patter- son, N. J. The weather was fine, and neither the -cars nor the grounds about the Falls were exces- sively crowded. The Temperance Societies of the village bad a fine celebration, and brilliaat fire works lighted up the grove just below the Falls in the evening, [his was our first visit to this cele- brated place, and we were forcibly struck with the remarkable shape of the walls of the cataract. The river rolls along smoothly fer a distance, then rapidly sad in a broken torrent over a rocky bed and finally falls sheer down the pre-ipice which is some sixty feet in hight. Here its course is stopped: for directly in front rises anether wali of rock to a hight a little above the level of the river and at a distance from the sheet, at the lower nd, of some fifteen or twenty feet, and at the up- per of but four or five. And then the river turns at right angles to the line of its former course. Ce IF His Honor Mayor Morris appears once more on the stage in an address to the ex-Ofice- Holders of our City, whose last desperate clutch on the places from which they had been removed, lias beea cut away by the recent decision of the Court of Errors. "His Honor, grievously dissatis- fied with the position he now occupies before the public, proceeds to pettifog the whole Usurpation case over again, and reasserts that the Hold-Overs were right, in defiance of the successive decisions of the two highest tribunals in the State, composed of their ardent political friends! After passing through the principal streets the Temperance So. cieties proceeded to the Colonnade Garden, on Brooklyn Hights, which was tastefully fitted up A fountain of pure water played beautifully in the centre, and flags and banners decorated every part. Several temperance fire and hose companies, with their engines and ban- ners, appeared in the procession and in the garden, and a rich band of music played soul-stirring airs of lively and martial music. The Rev. Dr. Cox ope ned with fervent appropriate prayer. The Declaration of Independence aad the Temperance Declaration were read, and several excellent Tem- perance Odes, set to patriotic tunes; were sung. T HOUGHTS SUGGESTED ON THE BANKS OF NITH, NEAR BURNS RESIDENCE. By Willian Wordswerlh. Too frail to keep the lofty vow That must have followed when his brow Was wresthed—s The Vision" tell us how— With holly spray, He faltered, drifted to and fro, And passed AWAY. Well might such thoughts, dear sister throng Our minds when lingering all too long, Over the grave of Burns we hung In social grief— [ndulged as if it were a wrong To seek relief. But. ieaving each unquiet theme Where gentlest judgement may misdeem, And prompt to we lcome every gleam Of gwod and fair, yeside this lipid Stream Breathe hopeful air. Let ust Enongh of sorrow, wreck and blight Think rather of those moments bright When to the consciousness of right His course was true, When Wisdom prosperea in his sight And Virtue grew, Yes freely let our hearts expand, ['reely as 1n youth's season bland, When side by side, Lis Book in hand, We wont to stray, ur pleasure varying at command Of each sweet ay. How oft inspired must he have trod These pathways, yon far-stretching road There lurks his home in that abode, With mirth elate, Or in bis nobly-pensive mood, The Rustic sate. I'roud thoughts that Image overawes, Before it huinbly 'ot us pause, And ask of Nature, from what cause And by what rules She trained her Burns to win applause That shames the Schools. Through busiest streets and loneliest glen Are felt the flushes of his pen; He rules mid winter snows, and when Bees fill their hives; Deep in the general heart of men His power Survives. What need of fieldsin some far elime, Where Heroes, Sages, Bards sublime; And all that fetched the flowing rhyme From genuine springs, Shall dweil together till old Time Folds up his wings! Sweet Mercy! to the gates of Heaven This Minstrel lewd, bis sins forgiven; The ruetal conflict, the heart riven With vain endeavor, And memory of Lurth’s bitter leaven, Ettaced tor ever. But why to Him confine the prayer, When kindred thoughts nnd yearnings bear On the frail heart the purest share With all that hive? The best of what we do or are, Just God, forgive! cn From the Democratic Review for July. A LEGEND OF LIFE AND LOVE. A veRY cheerless and fallacious doctrine is that which teaches tu deny the yielding to natural feelings, righteously directed, because the conse- quences may be trouble and grief, as well as sat- isfaction and pleasure. The mun who lives on {rom year to year, Jealous of ever placing himself in a situation where the chanees can possibly turn against him=—ice, as it were, surrounding his heart, and bis mind too serapulously weighing ina bal ance the results of giving way to any of those propensities his Creator has planted in his heart— may be a philosopher, but can never be a happy man. Upon the bauks of a pleasant river stood a cot- tace, the residence of an ancient man whose limbs were feeble with the weight of years and of former sorrow. In his appetites easily gratified, like the simple race of peop.e among whom he lived, every want of existance was supphed by a few fertile acres. Those acres were dlled and tended by two brothers, grandsons of the old man, and dwellers also in the cottage. The parents of the boys lay buried in a grave near by. Nathan, the elder, had hardiy seen his twentieth summer. He was a beautiful youth, Glossy ha clustered upon hiv head, and his checks were very brown from sunshine and open air. Though the Ccyes of Nathan were «oft and liquid, like a gitl's, and his cheeks enrled with a voluptuous swell, exercise and labor had developed his limbs nto noble and manly proportions. The bands of hun- ters, us they met sometimes to start off’ together after game upon the neighboring hills, conld hardly Jiow one among their pwmber who in comeliness, strength, or activity, might compete with the vouthtul Nathan. Mark was but a year younger than his brother. He, too, had great beauty. It course of time the ancient sickened, and knew that be was to die. Before the approach of the fatal hour, he called before nim the two vouths, and addressed them thus: “The wold, my children, is full of deceit. Evil men swarm in every place; and sorrow and dis appointment are the fruits of intercourse with them. So wisdom is wary. “And as the things of life are only shadows, passing like the darkness of a cloud, twine no bands of love about your hearts. For love is the ficklest of the things of lite, The object of ou aflection dies, and we thenceforth lanenich in aconyv: or perhaps the love we covet dies, and that 1s more painful yet. “It is well never taconfide in any man. It is well to keep aloof from the follies and impurities of earth. Let there be no links between you and others. Let not any being costrol you through your dependence upon him for a portion of your happiness. This, my sons, I have learned by bit ter experience, is the teaching of truth.” 4 Within a few days afterward, the old man was placed away in the m uble tomb of his Kindred, which was built on a Lill by the shore. Now the injunctions given to Nathan asd his brother=—injunctions frequently impressed upon them before by the same monitorial voice—were pendered over by each youth in his inmost heart. They had always habitually respected their grand- sire: whatever came from his mouth, therefore, wemed as the words of an oracle not to be guln- sayed. Soon the path of Nathan chanced to ed from that of Mark And the trees leaved out, and then in autumn ist jthein foliage; and 1a due course lvaved ont an and brothers met pot yer, be sunder- oe a ain, and muny times again—and the what change works over earth in such a space as [WO SCOre® vears and ten! Why do they start, as each casts his cars diop down their cheeks, and their frames tremble sven nore than with the feebleness of age They are the jong separated brethren, and they enfold themselves in one wnother’s arms. “And vet,” said Mark, after a few moments stepping back, and gazing earnestly upon his com- pasion’s wm and features, and yet it wonders ue that thou art my brother. Mark sighed, and answered not Then, in a little while, they made inquiries vhout what had befallen either during the tim pon the marble by which they had sated 1 met, Mark briefly told his story. “1 bethink me, brother, many, many years have indeed passed aver since the corrowful day when our grandsire, dying, left us tw seek our fortunes 1 past. ymid a wicked and a seductive worl Hi last wo ds, as thou, doubiless, dost re- member, advised us against the snares that should beset our subsequent He portrayed dangers that lie in the path of Jove: he 1m- ourneying thi Pp mn our |g nnds the ily of RET i g coLu- in Luman honor, and warned us te keej with our Kind live, and have pressed uo hdence aloof from too close connexion tle then died, but his instructions ever been present 11 my memory «Dear Nathan, why should 1 conceal from you that at that time I loved. Enemies said thar my good fortune was the result of chance: but 1 knew it the fruit of the judicious avstem of caution which governed me 10 matters Success attended me, of business as well as of social intercourse, “My brother, thus have I lived my life. Your look asks me if 1 have been happy. Dear brother, trath impels me to say wo! Yet assuredly if few glittering pleasures mimstered to me on my jour ney, equally few were the disappointments, the hopes blichted, the trusts betrayed, the faintings of the soul, cansed by the defection of those in whom I have laid up treasures. Ah, my brother, the world is full of misery! The disciple of a wretched faith ceased his story, ind there was silence awhile. Then Nathan spake: “In the early years,” lie said, “1, too, loved a beautitul woman. Whether my heart was more {rail than thine or affection had gained a mightier power over me, could not part from her I loved without the satisfaction of a farewell kiss. We met—1 had resolved to stay but a moment—for 1 had chalked out my future life after the fashion thou hast described thine, How it was, know not, bat the moments rolled on to hours, apd still we stood with enr arms around each other. My brother, a maiden’s tears washed my stern resolves away. The lure of a voice rolling quietly from Wetween two soft lips enticed me trom re- membrance of my good sire’s wisdom. 1 forgot his teachings, and married the woman loved. Ah! how sweetly sped the seasons! We were blessed. True, there came crossings and evils; but we withstood them all, and holding each other hy the band, forgot that such a thing as re- mained in the world. Children were born to us—hrave boys and fair wicls. Oh, Mark, that—fhat is a pleasure—that swelling of tenderness for our offspring—which the rigorous doctrines of your course of life have SOTTOW withheld from vou! «Like you, I engaged in trade. Various for- tune followed my path. 1 will not deny but that some in whom thought virrae was strong, proved cunning hypocrites, and worthy no man’s trust.— Yet are there many I have known, spot less, as far as humanity may be spotless, Thus, to me, life has been alternately false and fair. Have lived happy? No, not completely— it is never for mortals so to be But can lay my hand upon my heart and thank the Great Mater that has been far oftener than the darkness of the clouds. Dear brother, the world bas misery: but it is a pleasant world still, and atfords much joy to the the sunzhine dwellers! As Nathan cessed his brother looked up in his {ace like a man unto whem a simple truth Lad been for the first time revealed. W. W.
