I for the fifteenth time yesterday afternoon S I S ternoon The scene was the grand opening h v I of fall costumes and millinery at one of the big stores I and the crowds of women who had come to view tho opening looked upon I it In the light of a fine vaudeville free k of charge I I The second floor of the shop was I r given over entirely to the opening I Gorgeous dresses behind glass cases I I shoro forth dazzlingly and one or two tults and gowns on wooden mannikins I Itood on raised platforms At the end ot the day the unprotected gowns are I ready to be MId at reduced prices be I cause of the handling and rubbing that I they have been subjected to during the j day desplte placards begging the pub i lic to keep their hands off The wear and tear on the model frocks Is one of I the largest Items In tho expense account of opening day The salaries of the pretty models hired especially for the occasion Is another one Bertha was only one of eight who had spent the I ntlre day changing from lownecked I heath dresses to highnecked double I breasted walking suits for the benefit it a critical public I I Bertha Is an Intelligent girl She has I to be to answer the questions Though she had only murmured the question the head of the department Is down upon her like a Hash For money Is scarce even at openings Now the head of this department can make you buy anything she puts her mind on She has studied the underly ing principle of The Witching Hour and whenever she sees a customer buy Ing a cheap gown she mentally says You cannot buy that gown and then makes her take
