HUNGER POLOq GROUNDS Sept ISThirty thousand excited fans to 1 i day saw the Giants take Pittsburg into camp for two games The I dreaded Pirates were babes in arms Matty shut them out in the first 1 and Wiltse held them in the second contest Pittsburg started out like a house afire in the second game but soon subsided 3 1 New York turned toward the Polo Grounds long before noon today skip ping business luncheon and every ob stacle that stood In the nay The pen nant bee was buzzing everywhere when the Giants and Pirates came on the field an hour later and the players were amazed to find seats chucked full of sand lcheating humanity Between bites those who had taken time by tho forelock would occasionally rise and let out a muflled cheer for thelf favorites The stands really pre sented a ludicrous appearance Men gray of hair and rich sat alongside the less prosperous visitors from Cherry Hill nibbling away at their Improvised lunches with as much gusto as a boy at a Sunday school picnic The championship was to be decided however and the little niceties of life could well be set aside for such an oc casion It Is baseball toda and noth ing but baseball The old town can well afford to set aside one day for the people of the diamond and Mr Knick erbocker never does things by halves Gate Were Open Early Anticipating a crush the gates were thrown open at 11 oclock Instead of 12 and the storm began Among the first hundred there was a wild race for the stands Forgetting that there were 21000 seats waiting for them the base ball maddened fans ran all over each other to reach the grandstand and then for two hours patiently looked at the empty field Their Judgment was well founded however for In another hour 1 the gates were choked the long walk way from the elevated station was one I lolld slow moving mass of people and avery Incoming train was packed to the I gunwales Many of the expresses were so Jammed with people that It was use less to make a toP and all stations 1 r oil J 1 t a t north of Slxtyslxth street were f skipped leaving hundreds standing on the platforms No one could get off j nd no one could get on so the motormen wisely forged straight ahead i At I oclock the pressure at the gates had become so great that lines were formed extending two blocks In both directions Commissioner BIngham or dered a squad of MO policemen to take chafe of the crowd outside the grounds and for the first time this season twenty regularly uniformed I were allowed to 1 cops come Inside and assist the specials I Record Crowd of 30000 Ve have had big crowds and we have caied them record breakers Prob i ably they were but this was simply a swamper The seats were gobbled up so fast that the new stands were a s Inadequate as were the former ones which now look like the bush league affairs In comparison When the first game started the crowd must have numbered 30000 That Is the largest number of people that ever saw a ball game In America The crowd was full of map and gin ger and they whooped things up for the Giants from the minute they first anncarcil on the field for practice In another minute they caught sight of I the ungainly scrnmbledeggllk form Jot Hans Wngnrr and the big fellow had to stand a lot of goodnatured raillery First Inning Thomas the first man up popped a weak fly to Devlin Clarke was more successful and beat out s slow roller to the infield and took second on a passed ball Brldwell threw out Abby and Clarke took third A groan went I up as Wagner came to bat but the best the great batter could do was a wk
