Mrs. Watts waa a widow, and Ellse and Clarence were her only children. A small pension partly supported their wants, and sirs. Watts and EIU took In pluln sewing when they could get It, but Little Watts' earnings from the sale of bis papers were their chief source of Income. It seemed to mo tbnt tbey might live a llttl more comfortably, but ono day Little Watts confided a secret to me. "We're saving for Ellse," be said. "Hue's going to be a big sluger some day after she's gone away and studied and bad a chance. I'm saving up for that" This was the reason why Little Watta wore such shabby clothes, and this was why their home was so poor and bare and their table so scantily supplied. This was why Little Watts walked tbe streets In all kinds of weather, cry lug his papers at an bou when other boys slept. One, two years passed. I was still In the Leader office. Little Watts still cume before daylight for bis paiiers and wns called Little Watts still, for be was not noticeably larger or stron ger than when I saw blm first lie still lived next door to my own borne, aud Ellse was going away. Hue bad been singing In church choirs and at concerts, aud some ladles who liHd become Interested lu her, but who were unable to lend her money for ber study, bud given her a benefit concert, which tbe Leader bad widely advertised without charge on account of Little Watts. But most of tbe money that was to pay for Kline's two years of study In the east bad been or would be earned by Little Watts. But when I come back be shall work no more," Ellse said to me, with the tears In ber eyes. "I shall earn It then, and he shall go to New York to study drawing and engraving. He's so eager to learn It, you know, but he won't say much a bos tit or even think about It until I begin to earn money." Quite a little company of us went to the station to see Eliso off. Of course Little Watts was there. His large eyes were shining through their tears, and bis white face was wreathed lu smiles, though I knew his heart ached with sorrow at tbe thought of two years without ber. But the boy cried bis papers Just as loudly and cheerily as ever next day the Leader In tbe morning, wben day was breaking, and tbe Times at night, when tbe day was gone. I often met blm hurrying around tbe corners of almost deserted streets or paying a last visit to tbe hotels, where lie hoped to sell another paper at an hour when all other newsboys had gmie home. Every paper he sold counted, not for himself, but for Ellse. He and bis mother lived upon tbe pension and ber sewing. Every month a draft to tbe amount of all of Little Watts' earnings went to Nw York to Ellse, and every week abe wrote encouraging letter of what ber teacher said about ber voice and of her hopes for the future. I knew they'd bsv to say ber voice wssn't snytblng common," Little Watta said proudly to me when the first of ber letters en me. "I knew she'd aston ish 'em."' Twice the mountains changed from green to while and from white to green. Tbey were changing to whit again wben Ellse wrote tbe latter that told when sbs would start for borne. Llttl Wstts brought me tbe letter to read. "I shall reach borne about the last day of October," sb wrote. "You need not send m any mora money. I am afraid you nav sent me too much now. Her eyes were full of tears as she pointed toward the comer of the room. There stood a shining upright piano, Wllb n stool of erliusou velvet be fore It. The princess stamped ber foot as en ergetically as any ordinary persou would have done. "There's no earthly use being born a princess," sho said. "I want my own way occasionally, and I never get It" The minister raised both eyebrows. "Hut, your highness, I was sent to rea son with you." 'There's no reason In It," she flashed buck. "There's anything but reason in my being trotted out like a horse to be inspected by this conceited person merely becsuse he's decided to marryl" "To think of the son of so powerful a throne being called a person!" Tbe minister's eyes sbone through his glass es, blankly dismayed. The princess shrugged her shoulders In a noncommittal way; then she seized the minister by botb lapels and contin ued ber argument "0 minister who is not plenipotentiary, If you feel too badly about not being able to roflson wltb me remember even Napoleon fail ed once, and maybe you two will go down Into history together. As for reason" Tbe prlucess snapped ber slender fingers disrespectfully close to the minister's nose and left tbe room and the mau. The sudden Indisposition of tbe prin cess was an unexpected detail In the preparations for receiving the royal visitor, who arrived tbe next day. She awoke when the first sunrise crept over the sky, yawulug from tbe weariness of having spent twenty-four hours trying to be still. The gilt clock showed thot there were nt lesst two hours before the pulsce would awake. She crept out of bed and dressed stenltblly. threw a light wrap over her shoulders and went through the door tbat led from ber apartments to the rose garden. She went swiftly uward tbe summer boue that was ber favor ite retreat. She stopped on tbe thresh old and stared at the young man com placently smoking a cigar on ber own pet bench: Ho hurriedly threw away the clgsr and bowed low before ber. "Good morning," be said, and the princess noticed tbe charm of bis voice. "I scarcely expected any one else to be awake so early in the day. I hope I'm not trespassing." j The princess waa startled, but deter mined at the expense of veracity to keep the household from learning that tbe condition of ber throat was not so serious ss the physician had vouched for. "I didn't er expect to find any one here myself," hedging for time to cre ate Ideas. "The fact is I have been awake almost all night attending tne- er princess, and when she at Inst slept I slipped Into tb rose garden to be refreshed by the early morning air." She looked charmingly confused, and the man. evidently a moot polite young fellow, declared bis Intention to leave ber In undisputed possesion of the rose garden. Hut tbe princess was fond enough of an adventure to sweep sway a few conventionalities In order to experience tbe unusual. "No, no; by all means remain seated. sir," she said, seating herself on a neighboring bench. "I am not so aelf- IkIi nor. Indeed, so unsorlsble. On tbe lust day of the prince's visit she cam Into the rose garden a trifle earlier, but be was there, Just as she bad found him for tb Inst three mornings. You are leaving this afternoon, I bear," abe said In greeting. "And I am to leave without knowing your name?" be asked gloomily. Tbe princess' eyes were wistful. "It's best to let It remain slmply-an plsode," she answered, with a reflec tion of bl despondency. But I must know I will know!" He seized both ber bands and held them firmly. I can't tell you now," she gasped, "but If tbe prince Is to be at tbe regat ta next month, perhaps I'll be able to see you then. I know our princess I going." Tbe gloominess lifted from bis face. "I'll see. you I'll find you-I'll defy all the powers that tie for you!" And he suddenly took her lu bis arms and kissed her. For a moment tbe princess did not stir; then she gave a sturtled exclama tion and slipped from bis embrace. Two days after the departure of the prince and bis retluuo she found her self well enough to go to tbe room that tbe minister considered bis own special den. Her curiosity could no longer be restrained, and tbe minister, having always proved wax in her bunds, could surely be Induced to tell all be knew about tbe late visitors. While talking ber glance fell upon a smsll photograph lying on tbe tsblo before ber. Her eyes widened aud ber breath came faster. Who's that?" she demanded eagerly, stopping tbo minister lu tbe middle of what be considered a well chosen re mark. "Don't you know?" be asked In aston ishment. Tb princes took the picture lu ber band, looked at It Intently, then gave wsy to a peal of hysterical laughter which caused tb old msn to lean over ber anxiously. Stanton is not the pet can didnteof the railroads for the governor ship, w hy was be in conference at St Albans with the leading attorneys of one of Vermont's chief railroads, a few iliiys Bn, with a feature of that con ference the calling into it of certain political friend of the Koxbury man T There are just three reasons that could bring a candidate for the governorship who i a lawyer into such a conference. First, he could be there a 'A' railroad enndidate, second, as an attorney for the road, and third, as an attorney against the road. If Mr. Stanton's prescuce was due to the last named reason hi act ia above criticism. The other two reasons, however, are so full of probability that they should bo de nied at once if they did not enter into the case. To be a railroad candidate ha its danger, but for a candidate to be a railroad attorney is worse. He- gsnling this conference the Knohurg Standard in part says: It is asserted, and on w hat is believ ed to be good authority, that confer ence ws held in tbe offices of the Cen tral Vermont railway in St. Albans last Tuesday at which were iresent Mr. Stanton and the attorney and lieuten ants of the Central in this county. It is possible that this was a busiues meeting with no (Ktlitic iu it, but the probabilities are that the conference was entirely political and the purpose was to plan for the rapture of deii-galc in Franklin county favorable to Stan ton. The Central Vermont Railway ha repeaUtlly given out tlmt it Will have nothing to do with politics, but the indications are that it baa changed it attitude and inU-uditlo (and Stanton iu the governor's chair and defeat Mr. l'ruuty if puMfible. adv The hest of Everything -IN- pootwear -AT- YOUNG'S Shoe Store. We are not letting the political ex citement defraud ua of any sleep, but we do think the defeated candidates should have our sympathies, for, from what we cat) see, nome of them are making the light of their live. Just now, the aume of their ambition seems to be thi particular oflice or position, when in fact, there i but one top step, the oflice of chief executive, but some of the grade are so Hue that a citizen may be pardoned for aspiring to the several step higher which be may be qualified to fill. Having had occasion to call ou my old friend Martin VauBurkirk a few day since, it came to me why canuot more of our young men accumlate pro perty iu the form of good farm ami homes for themselves and children, and so live contented lives, wherea but few iu comparison do. Martiu has all a mau needs, more ol'times i an injury, and I will gtiaiantce thousands of men and women who are spending money ao lavishly are not getting one half the real enjoyment out of life that he is. Children at home, and they arc not afraid of woik; a son Pi take gome of the heavy burdens from hi father' shoulders; daughters, rosy checked and healthy, w ho can walk to church two or three mile and not look like as the old saying ha it, like the "last run of shad." Well Martin and I agree upon a good many thing a to how to do this and that, but of course I differ to him a be has a practical knowledge of farming while mine ia amateurish. To take up a practical question that is the matter of cutting brush in our highway. What are we going to do about jtf Thi question, with that of leaving suitable tree for shade, should be treated with an eye to future coudition. I am not a much of an en thusiast a neighbor Hapgood of Peru in regard to the subject for I would have the highwayg trimmed of all sup erfluous growth and only inch left a will, in time to come, make desirable shade trees and ornament to the road side. It should he doue under the careful supervision of the Selectmen and it seem that now we need to have our highways looked after more close ly than ever, not only for the conven ience of our people, who are being edu cated to enjoy good roads, but also for the convenience of automohilists in urorise a a Bargains for the Month of June. I 3 We call attention to the wonderful aggregation of real bargain sensations, impressively demonstrating beyond all question the supremacy of this store for its matchless underselling event.
