In the evening when Mr. lienwycn came up from the city Mr. Corrlgan took blm aside and related the day's experience with the tramp, suggesting tbat a detective be employed while me valuable lot of diamonds was In the bouse. Tbe two gentlemen, aa bat nl readv been stated, never got on to gether peaceably. "Why, my dear Michael," he said to tone of undisguised scorn, "what you aay Is nonsense, pure and simple. On the following night three private detectives came out to Irvinglon and stole separately to the lawyer's house. About 11 o'clock, ac companied liy Mr. Corrlgan In person, they concealed themselves lit vnrlous points of vantage on the Renwyck place and awaited development. Meanwhile Mr. Renwyck, having scored decisively on Uncle Michael, enjoyed his dinner as a victor should He was In the liest of spirits, not alone because of his triumph, but because of certain cheerful developments which had come to light ut the meeting of the stockholders of bis new deep water barlmr company. He was so elated over bis certain success that he cast out broad bints which were mystifying enigmas to all present with the except tlon of Richard, who understood ouly too well. To him they meant the col lapse of bis father's cherished hopes, while be, a dutiful son, was forced to sit calmly and watch an enemy gloat. Dinner wos scarcely over w hen call ers were announced. They were old friends of the family, claiming the at- teutlon of Mr. ami Mrs. Renwyck and Miss Scbermerly, which left the four young people to their own devices. Cor this Richard thanked the visitors fervently and wandered with Miss Harriet across the lawn, where they seated themselves on a favorite liench and enjoyed a long and uninterrupted chat Had Uncle Michael been present Instead of sulking In his lonely bach elor borne he might have had cause to exchange his frowns for chuckles, lu lew of the fact that a certain young scamp was assuredly making progress. Nor was the linpcrtl Dent nobleuii.n luilf so contrite as he might have been, for before they left their seat he hud bent his head and kissed her hand again ou a certain dimple which had taunted him for sev ernl days. Ills heart was singing now, and tho words he set to music were the words advice hy bla eminent counsel, MI- ihael Corrlgan: lr ever you hone to ftnd your Joy, You've got to broitri It out, my boy. For And here the heart's song ended abruptly, for Mr. Renwyck was calling them from the steps of the veranda, "Croyland, he said laughingly as they came Into tbe light, "if you and Harriet have fluishel your flirtation I'd llko you to come Into the library for a quiet smoke. There, Harriet," he chlded, "you have hud this young gen- tlemau to yourself all duy. You don't begrudge blm to your hardworking father for an hour, do you? Kiss me aud run along to your next." The Texan longed with all his soul to tay the same, but was forced to part more formally, at tbe same time bid ding good night to the rest of the little house party, after which he braced himself for an ordeal and followed Mr. Renwyck Into the library, wonder ing what was coming. CHAPTER XIV. T O the suspicious adventurer tha first action of his host wss most peculiar, for without ex plunatlon he closed and care fully locked the door. Richard's ap prehensions were relieved, however, when Mr. Renwyck produced a de canter and cigars, lighted his own per foe to and then luy back In bis deep leather chair and laughed till the tears ran down bis face. Tbe mystified Tex au smoked on lu polite silence, pa tiently waiting for some explanation of the old in mi's humor. He could wait quietly, since It was evident from Mr. Renwyck's exuberant Joy that Richard had nothing personally to fear that bis secret was still bis own. After a time bis host wiped his eyes with bis handkerchief and apologized for bis merriment. "Forgive me, Lord Croyland," he begged; "but, to tell you the truth, I Just can't help It. Affairs In Tex as are uot only drifting rny way, but the whole situation has become Intense ly humorous. Why, It Is a regular play. Old Rill Williams represents tragedy, tny company will shortly sup ply melodrama, while a third coriiora tlon has apieared on the stage and Is furnishing both sides with comedy. Let me explain." Do so, I beg you," murmured Rich ard, striving not to look as uncom fortable as he always felt when this Texas lmlness came up. The finan cier laughed again and proceeded: As I told you Ix'fore, Rill Williams' company Is working for a deep water harbor at Matagorda City, while my company is equally anxious to operate at Longuiatt. "Rut, my dear air," began Richard, forgetting hit role for moment, "Olivia Isn't such a bad-r-I uiesu er Such a bad aale for me, ebf laugh ed Mr, Reuwyck, uucoiiaclously help ing his guest out of a hole, "I should say not I Why, my boy, w told w hile elephant!" Richard thought swiftly. Olivia, at be wss about to tell Mr. Reuwyck, was not such a bud tile for a deep wa ter harbor after all, and In fact be had always coutcuded with his father that It was mens advantageously located for that purpose than Matagorda City. Not only was the situation more cen tral, but II offered shorter aud more direct communication with freight routes and muln lines. True, the country was sparsely populated lu Its vicinity, but settlers would come nat urally with tbe development of such ID enterprise. Perhaps the Peace Bud Good Will Realty company rep resentative was not such au egregious ass as the Reuwyck and Williams fac tious supiMised. Has (he new company, In your opin ion, any chance of success?" be asked bis host. "Chance!" laughed Mr. Renwyck. Not a ghost of It! Now, listen. Here comes the cream of the Joke. The time for taking a vote on these deep water i harbor bills lu tbe Texas legislature had been set for two weeks from uow, but various circumstances have played Ulroetly luto n:y hands. Senator Frank Kluwalt, president of tbe Texas atate improvement committee of tbe legis lature, was closeted with me for tw hours this morning. He Is now on his way to Austin, where my harbor bill will be passed by both houses Imtiiedl ately upon bis arrival, and the leglsls turc will at once adjourn." "Yon you mean," stammered Kl ard, "that you bav bought Kluwalt that" Tut, tut!" protested the crafty old schemer. "True, I bought the geulle man a lunch at Bherry's, togetiier with a few cigars, a couplo of cold bottles, Slid there were some incidental ex nensp which ran the price of the meal up well, up Into six figures, but be' youd tills" Mr, Renwyck paused and smiled. "No one lu this enlightened age would dream of buying an entire legislature, my dear boy. Ilorrllilel" Richard rose from his seat, took turn up and down the library, then faced bis exultant host "Mr. Reuwyck," he asked, "aren't you losing sight of one Important fac tor lu the game? l'rom what I have beard of blm, Rill Wllllama Is scarcely the man to be lying around lu a bam mock while you are putting through your deep wuter harbor bill. In my humble opinion, you are going to have a fight on your bauds that will make you sit up and get busy.' This was tbe most tin English Ian guuge which the supposed nobleman bad yet employed, but It iHd uot at tract tbe notice or awaken the tuspl clou of Mr. Reuwyck at that time, owing to bis deep Interest lu tbe mat ter Immediately In band. Ah," be cried, "now you'v laid your finger on a beauty spot! or course Williams will fight uie with tooth aud null; but, by th Lord Harry, becttu't!" Why not?" "Simply becauso he will not be In Texas when my bill Is passed." Richard stared at bis host in fesr and wonder, while Mr. Reuwyck con tinned Jubilantly: I could uot have bad matter turn out better If I had arranged It all my self. It seems that Williams' fool of son was up here lu New York Isst week and got himself badly smashed up In an automobile accident." The principle is carried out so thor oughly that every cent of the bank's funds is invested in Vermont, and the bunk has never lost a dollar on a poor note following this policy. This is one answer to the cry that there is no ehanco to invest money at home. Tbe bank's policy has been for safe ilivosltuonl wutLu. t iiau fu, a liitf!. rutu of interest and on the eleventh of this month the assets of the bank passedthe million-dollar mark. Neither the policy nor the success of the bank is so strange, when we know that Hon. Car roll S. Page, of calfskin fame, is the bank's president. Commencing January VMH this Bank will pay four per cent, compounded semi-annually on all deposits largo and small alike; will pay' taxes on'iill sums up to $2,000, and will issuo pass-book; witb no limit as to timu of withdraw or other restrictions or limitations sav those common to all Vermont Savings Banks. Deposits made on or before Fe 15th will draw interest from Jan. 1 those ofter Feb. 15th from Apr. 1st, Combination Cash Store Co. To do this, I will offer a special discount as above which will make it an object for every buyer to anticipate his wants for the coining year. As is well known, the stock is the largest in all this vicinity and in every way fresh and desirable and has been kept replete with new and desirable goods in every de partment so that it is in no way run down or shop worn. Think what this dis count means to you. You buy every $5.00 item for $3.75, $1.00 one for 75c, 50c one for 37 l-2c, 25c one for 19c, etc., making a very radical saving on all your purchases, and any article less desirable on account of condition arid sea son will 'often be sold at ONE HALF regular price. This is no fake sale but an absolute "wind up" of the mercantile business so long conducted by Burton Co., and myself. Flour,Sugar,Spool Cotton, Cheese and two or three other like items that have to be constantly replaced are alone excepted and on these special net prices will be made so as to bring them i cheaper than sold elsewhere, for instance Diamond Patent Flour at $6.00 and Acme Choicest Pastry at $5.25 per bbl. Best six cord Spool Cotton at 5c. any size or number black and white, other colors mostly number 50.
