With u eloud of colonels- one late liiited Statesman, who was read ily distinguishable by his air from the Vol unteers the General proceeded to visit his batteries and his men. The first work inspected was a plain parapet of earth pia-eu some oti teet above the river, and protecled very slightly by two small flank ing parapet. Six trims. ;J2-nouudcr.s.ant howitzers of an old pafern were mounted en tmrMle, without any traverses whatev er. The carriages rested on rough plat forms, and the wheels ran on a traversing semicircle of plank, as the iron rails were not yef ready. 1 he gunners a plain look ing body of men, very like railway labor ers and mechanics, without uniform, were engaged at drill. It was neither quick nor goou work about equal lo the average of a squad alter a couple of days excri is j nut Uie men worked earnestly, and I have no doubt, if the Federali.sls trive them time. they will prove artillerymen in the end. Jt appeared to me tinoui j uu yards oil. Every one was de- siious of seeing the shot; but we were at the wrong side for the wind, and I ven tured to say so. However, the General thought and said otherwise. The word "Fire!" was triven. Alas! the. friction. tube would not explode. Jt was one of a new sort, which the Tcnnesseeans are try i i J a miii iiiciuice naiiu hi. a second an swered better. The mm went off. but where the ball went to no one could av. as the smoke came into our eyes. The parly moved to windward, and. after an other fuse had missed, the gun was again discharged at some 5 degrees elevation, and the shot fell in good line. 200 vards hortof the target, and did not ricochet. Gun No. 2 was then discharged, and off went the ball at no particular mark, down the river; but if it did go off, so did the gun also, for it gave a frantic lean and jumped with the carriage off the platform nor was this wonderful, for it was an old-fashioned chambered carronade or howitzer, which had been loaded with a full charge, ami solid shot enough to make it burst with indignation. Turning from this battery, we visited another nearer the water, with four guns (y2-pounders.) which were well plaesd to sweep the channel with greater chance of ricochet; nnd higher up on the bank, to wards a high peak commanding the Mis sissippi, here about 70 yards broad, and a small confluent which runs into it, wa another bit' lory of two guns, with a very great commanu, um oiny in tor siiell, as the fire must be plunging. All these bal leries were very ut constructed, and in only one was the magazine under decent cover. In the first it was in the rear of the battery, up the hill behiad it. The parajieU w ere of sund or soft earth, unpro vided with merlons. The last had a few sand-bags between the guns. Jiiding up a steep road, w e came to the camp of the men on the wooded and undulating plateau over the river, which is broken by water courses into ravines covered with bru.-h-wood and forest trees. Great loss of life, and probable failure, would result from any attack on the works from the river merely, llut a flotilla might get past the guns without any serious loss in the present state of their service and equipment; and there is nothing I saw to prevent the landing of a force on t lie banks of the river, which, with a combined action on the part of an adequate forco of gun boats, could carry the position. As the river falls the round-shot fire of the guns will he even less effective. The General is providing water for the camp by means of huge cisterns dug in the ground, which will be filled with wafer from the river by steam power. Having relumed to the steamer, the party proceeded up Ihe river to another small camp in defence of a battery of four guns, or rather of a small parallelogram of soft sand coverinz a new a little hie-hei- than the knee, with four puns mounted in it on the river face. No communication exists through the woods between the two camps, which must be six or seven miles apart. 1 he force stationed here was com posed principally of gentlemen. They were all iu uniform. A detachment work ed one of the guns, which the general w i-h-ed to see fired w ith round shot. In five or six minutes after the order was given the gun was loaded, and the word given, "Fire." the gunner pulled the lanyard hard, but the tube did not explode. Another was tried. A strong jerk pulled it out bent and incombustible. A third was inserted which came out broken. The fourth time was the charm, and the ball was protected about GO ynrds to the ri-dit and 100 yards short of the mark a stump, some 1200 yards distant, in the river. It must be re membered that there arc no dispart, tan gents, or elevating screws lo the guns the officer was obliged to lay it by the eye with a plain chock of wood. The general ex plained that the friction tubes were the re sults of an experiment he was making lo manufacture them, but I agreed with one of the officers, who muttered in my ear, i ne oiu linstock ana porlhrc. arc a darn ed deal better." Mr. Parker Pipps was an incipient sol dier. Ho pined for martial glory, and fancied that in the fields of M'ar or Love, he was nlike invincible. Mars and Venus must certainly have been in conjunction when Parker Pipps was born. He had a fluffy mouctachc and decidedly weak legs j a tery high opinion of himself, and no opinion at all of anybody else. In fact, he was a fine ppecimen of that contempti ble creature, the lady's mau; and, poor, frilly little Chylena had listened to his soft nothings untill she really fell in love, and it was of Mr. Parker Pipps she was think ing when she nal beside the river. Now, dear reader, here are the raw ma terials of a lloinance of rtul Life. In the next chapter, which, I warn you, will be a idiorf and tedious one, I tlmll relate how for his tride the soldier sought her and but I must not Anticipate. CIUTTEII II. If Mr. Parker Pipps w as violently in love with Chylena, it is no less certain that that young la ly entertained a very lender passion for the gallant Son of Mars. A woman's heart If men only knew its value, lh'y would prize it more and the vort of it is, that w e do not ai preciate the blessing until we loe it for ever. And, ju.-t consider, inconsiderate reader of these random lines, that if you gain the love of a good woman, all the treasures of Aladdin's Cave will be ns dross and dust in comparison. Put I am digressing. Mr. Parker Pipps went to have his pic ture taken by a Daguerrean aitist who vis ited Manchester to benefit himself pecuni nnly, and flutter sitters altogether. 1 cannot assert that the portraits exhibit ed in his room were specimens of high art knowing that the shades weve entirely black, and the lights so white that they half dazzled you. The portrait of the gentlemen were extremely curious, eacl of them being of a cadaverous complexion and looking as though they had just bought hair-brushes. They had a drag-down ex pression at the corners of their mouths and a placid air generally, which gave one tke idea of Methodist ministers out of employment. As for the portraits of the ladies why. all I can say, is that an old maid would be angelic in comparison.- Such hardnnuthsj such stern eyes j such terribly starched caps, and such stiff fig ures such a scorn of crinoline, (well won't find fault with thatj and such a Puritanical air altogether, that how any man in the possession of his reason could possibly fall in love with any of them I cannot comprehend. The professor of photographs was a modest man, very modest indeed. 1 le had not studied Titian, but he had polished plates j and knew more of Collodion than of Correggio. I do not fancy that he knew much nbout Perugino, or Paul Potter, or Peter Paul Pcubcns, but he polished a plate finely, and he finished one off for Mr, Parker Pipps. Now what mistakes people make when they sit down to have their portraits taken: They go into a saloon, or a room, and look as unusual as jiossible. They brush their hair until it looks much like an antiquated blacking-brush. They fix their eyes in impossible directions, ami fidget with their coals and shirt-collars. They make them selves ridiculous in fact, and so do not get likenesses of themselves. This is what Mr. Parker Pipps did, but of his pictorial doings I shall tell in chapter the third. And all the while the Beauty of Ratten kill is peeping through the rose embower ed window of her Cottage by the IJiver. (To be Continued.) Ixc 10FNT of the Battle. When the 2d Vermont Keginient was mustered into service, there was one A oluntecr with a stiff w rist who was rejected. It was a se vere blow to the young man, who could not retrain from shedding tears. He want ed to do something for his country, and accordingly obtained a situation as cook. When the Regiment went into action he left his pots and kettles, obtained a gun and joined in the advance. "When a charge w as made he came face to face w ith an of ficer of the rebels. "Surrender said the officer. The volunteer replied by shooting him, taking his sah, sword and opera irlass j and retiring in safety. He wore his cook ing frock, a blue blouse, which is in pos sesion of Senator I'oote. I saw it yes terday four bullets passed through it. He bad also one through his hat, yet es caped to continue his cooking unharmed. The name f this hero is John C. Thayer, a theoligical student of Fairfax, Vermont, of Company 11. The principle is simple as that two and two make tour, and a few practical lessons wouhl render any girl of ordinary ability capable of cutting out her own dresses, w hile, with the sewing machine, it would bo only amusement to make them.
