The paufla who dia-^eovered. develo|m-d and hold the nil lie* of^thin district with a ririu belief in their ^ant^wealth, belong to that intelligent mid vig^^orous and patriotic portion of Americana^who have finished up the states^of the Atlantice slope, made those^of the Mississippi valley and are now^laying broad hikI deep the foundations of^the great commonwealths of the Pacific^^lope and the Kockv mountains. The world^bus never seen the equal of this Mapla,^Ten thoiia.ind times more etlicient tinman^army with banners have Iteeu these bands of^workini;men and wurkingvvon.i'n. in their^quiet but never wavering march from^the Al'pglianiea to the Pacific, taking^with tin ill their household BOMB, their^plows, their picks and shovels, their schools^and their churches. Before this grand^march ol the pioneers currying westward^the empire, tin- savages retreated and slunk^buck into t heir putml reservations: behind^it sptang ii)i farms which f. id the world,^cities and railroads, what they call civili^^zation: and tr. in it |h^ured out tin streams^of gold and silver and copper and lead which^have vitalized and made |HTiualient the^ttnauciul pondit ion of the count, TheCisiks. t be Hunt iugdous, the Vailder-^bilts, the Qovlda, the Ames and the (lakes^and the Villalds think that they made the^^(iri at West.'^ ltut their geographies told^them the (ireal West was a vast wilderness^inhabited by bloodthirsty savages anil bul-^faliHsaud tr.'p]^crs. They never dreamed^of a railroad beyond the Mississippi till^MM school teacher told their children of^the vast mines of gold and silver and the^cities growing up in the mountains and on^the Pacilic waters. I line by the help of^some of those pioneers who made the^country, like llauser and Power, ami llroad^water and Hill, they dared to build rail^^roads to gather ii|^ the golden nuggets, the^golden harvests, the fat beeves and M illions^and fast burst's dcvclo|^ed and raised in^the great desert of their geographies. Thepeople of Cisike City and the New^World mining district belong to the men^who have made the country, ami Iheyhoiie^the railroad men will speedily come to^take their bullion to the eastern market at^audi cheap rat est lint tin v ran afford to bring^out the millions and millions how in sight^and yet to be developed. Those mines of^this district m ar ('isike City have been best^developed and proven up. Three smelters^have been i nrli d at Cooke City to prove up^the ores of the mines of this camp. The^ores of many of the mines have bei u rum-li^^ed in these furnaces and have given very^satihfaitory results, lint they want anil^must have cheap transportation for their^low grade bullion. Miners cannot afford to^pay two cents freight on lead and sell it fur^less than four cents. Hut it is believed the^pioneer railroad men will meet the pioneer^miners and both will be greatly enriched^by the many i icli mill^ ol (look* City. 'Thelow oiadeofth,- bullion and 1 lie cost^of transpoi t.ition have caused the sum It. r-^of Cisike City to siiut down Hud the miners^to ipiit work, stve what is necessary to^represent and l.old their mini s until such^time as cheaper transportation will enable^them to make a fair profit on the output of^their mines and furnaces. Notwithstand^^ing this delay of profitable returns, neither^the pror-|m tors who discovered these mines,^nor those who have purchased interests in^them have lost faith in the final results: all^are holding on for ^the whistle of the iron^lloise.^ VYIitli he conies the New World^district will be alive with nu n. teams and^smelters, and the railroad will have its^trains loaded with coke and the bullion of^the mines now idle for want of chea|HT^trans|sirtatioii. Thesefacts, as a matter of course, bring^up for discussion the most f.-asible route for^a railroad to this wondtrful mining dis^^trict. Allwho have examined and studied the^topography of the country, agree that the^route from Cinnabar up the Yellowstone^and Soda Butte Mil is by far the best^route on which a railroad could la1 con^^structed to Cooke City so as to carry cheap^freights. (In this there ale no excessive^grades mid no serious obstacles to the cheap^construction of a Urst ciasH road. (In all^other roads there are grades mid obstruc^^tions which render a road lo Cisike City^dill.inil and ex|s'iisive. In fact, the valley^of the Yellowstone and Soda Butte creek is^the natural route for a railroad to (Vsike^City iheobjections to this route are more^imaginary than reul. Itis said, ^No railroad should Is' |s r-^mitted in the jMirk.^ To this all may agree^without det rum nt to the On ike City road^up the Yellowstone. Some say there is no^act of congress, no law, simply the edict of^the secretary of the interior, making the^ludian reservation north of the Yellowstone^a l^art olthe park. If this be true the rail^^road to Cisike City only needs a charter^from the state of Montana. If it be not^true tht 11 congress can easily make the Yel^^lowstone and Soda Butte creek the bounda^^ry, as they should lie. For such a natural^boundary between the nark and the lively,^enterprising people of Montana, there are^very gisid reasons. 'lheremust be a well defined line, or there^will be eudless disputes between the Vmer-^tcan citizen, who thinks bis right to bear^arms and slnsit game should not l^ .pi, .^tinned and the American soldiers, who is^detailed to keep the American citizen from^shooting and killing game on the park. Nothingbut a flowing stream can make a^boundary about which there can be no dis^^pute. If on one side of a stream, he is^right: but if on the other he kills a bird, lo^^ts wrong. All is plain^uo need of mistakes^and contentions. Itis also s-iid the game flocks down into^the valleys of the East Yellowstone and^Koda-Butte creek, and it will Is* killed off. Nohunter would make such mi objection,^for nil hunters know game will sasm forsake^all haunts where it is much disturbed and^slaughtered. Butit is said: ^You spoil the symmetry of^the park; it is now u square bounded by^right lines.^ If this be an argument in the^mind of any one, the answer must apical to^the same intellectual qualities. 1 he pro^^poned l.oiiiidarn sof the meandering streams^must Is- more Iwautiful and pleasing to all^lovers of natural objects in ^Wonderland^^than the stiff, straight line now claimed. Again, they say. ^you cut off the attrac^^tions of the park. Ifthis lie n valid argument then the park shouldbe extended us to take in the river^and mountains as far north as Livingston;^for tin-re is nothing outside of the proposed^Isiundary equal in grandeur aud beauty to^that of the river and mountains now l^-^tween the boundary and the latitude of^Livingston. Those who run the imrk and^make guides to the |Nirk. have said nothing^of UxjthilLfl TTHf'.Ue proposed line as^worthy of attention to the tourists, so the^proposed natural Isiundary can not in any^way injure the businesa of these parties. Ihe Official (Juidn^ does give the dis^^tance Jto Soda Butte, which Would be left^about five feet out of the park by the pro^^mised Isiundary: as Soda Butte creek runs^under the base of the huUe. Noone wants to destroy Soda Mutte. It^will stand, and Mr. Clark will be glad to^show its hcuuties and wonders to all tour^^ists who ch.Mrse to make the trip from Mr.^Yancy's to aee it. If this Soda Butte be in^^sisted upon as a detriment to a railroad^that will put millions mid millions in the^national treasury, Mr. Fitzgerald, of Gardi^^ner will take the contract to move Soda^Butte over the proposed line into the Park^and thus save to toe nation's wonder seek^^ers the inexpn ssible pleasure of seeing a^bntte alsiut twenty-five feet high and twen^^ty-five feet diameter of base, which was^once deposited 'ay a spring or geyser, now^inactive, and which has lost all ils attrac^^tions by the fact that its original cause has^ceased to exist, that men, perhaps^goats, have trampled over it till^all the original and interesting features^have Is-en obliterated^the central vent^tilled up, and the side next the creek under^^mined and caved in^the whole will soon^follow and there will be but little of Soda^Itutte left for tourists. 'They will see all^there is of it in many dc|^oaits from spiings^and geysers in all [tarts of the park, at^Mammoth Hot Springs and in the geyser^basins. On^the fallowing page and under date of Oct.^2lt, or ^iu:ht days previous to the date fixed^for the stock holders meeting, a board of^directors had been elected by the stock^^holders who represented the then existing^Isiard. At a subsequent meeting a resolu^^tion was presented by I,. H. Hershlield and^adopted without the knowledge of the^sbskholdeis. This resolution provided^that each director should receive If;*^)^^alary per annum for attendance at meet^^ings, exclusive of the fair and racing sea^^son. This represented a disbursement of^|t.1D0 annually or f:^.ton for the past two^yeais, which amount it is promised to make^the directors disgorge. Thepresent board of directors ap|M'iir to^hold the lop hand. It is expected they will^meet in a few days and elect themselves a^new board, as was done Inst year.
