Among nil the van. us kind* of dtina gogutry, there is none more deleterious in it? effect upon the tone of public feel- sentiment, tlian that of appealing This is the tendency,—natural, inevitable, deplorable. It is this species of dtma go^uery which laid Ihe foundation for so many bloody riots and iutesliiie ftuds in New York, Philadelphia, New Orleans, 8- Louis, and nuny other of cur large cities within these fifteen years past. This it was which, right or wrong, but naturally and necessarily, created organ! za'ions such as the Native American party, etc., with a view to counteract op posite organizations and influences. But for this, no such orgat.iaation as an espe cial American pnrty would have existed, for the American jeople are not so jealous and illiberal as ever to have fur oi«hed material fur such an organization, unlets the.r f«elings had been goaded up to the point of suspicion and retaliation by such demagogue arts. The partisan who engages in or encourages such ef fort*, is a demagogue of the ruost danger ous class, and whether his station le high or low,—whether he prowl for his prey around (ho purlieus of grog shops and gambling saloon*, or ply his arts in some i ijrher station,—he deserves the severest reprobation of every true Republican. Such arts are, perhaps, not so exten sively, at least not so successfully, em ployed, at this present time, as they have been heretofore, for the indignation of the people has been to a great extent aroused and their watchfulness provoked by the extent to which they have been practiced. Still, there will at uli times be fomid men unpatriotic, selfish, base emmgh to foment such feelings and en gage in such censurable employment. Such men are still endeavoring to compass their enda by these means, reckless alike •f the public welfare and the public safe ty. The extent to which they carry their efforts is almost as incredible as it is shameless and disgusting. Witness tbe following from a contemporary print: Time has al»o shown that, while IMtiy iltncrican born citizens have proven traitors to their couutry, not one of foreign birth has, since the revolution^ fraternized to foreign influence." When demagoguery reaches so low depth at this,—wht n, in the eager scram ble for foreign influence and foreign votes it tells the foreign-born citizens that they are better, more patriotic, more American, than thoae born upon our soil and nurtured UKtor our inati.uii.jns,—it would really 1MB that their purpose was too apparent and their sincerity too questionable to de lude the foreigner himself, while the com fliitct to American intUtu'ii n*, Ameri 0«f character and American loyally de I wfVM tit* Centura and contempt ol patriotism and fidelity of the foreign-born population, as a class.
