ONLY DID HIS DUTY:” GETS CARNEGIE MEDAL TRENTON, June 0. —Seated In his modest home in Bellevue-ave.. Win. P. Van Deventer, a railroad man granted a Carnegie medal of bronze and S4O a month as long as he lives for per sonal bravery, related the Incident which resulted in saving the life ot one woman and nearly succeeding in saving another, while he himself, lost a foot under the wheels of a freight car lasi fall. The man's demeanor was as modest as his simple home. Mr. Van Deven ter said: “I was standing on the bumper of a freight car to which was attached a drill engine, at a siding, when I saw Katherine Faliinger and Eliza beth Schemper, the former from Elizabeth and the latter from South Trenton. They tried to cross in front of the car. 1 shouted to them, but they paid no heed. They sought to plunge ahead. ”1 held fast to the freight car with one hand and tried to push the wo men off the rails with the other. I succeeded In getting one woman off after she had been struck, but the other slipped after I gave her a shove, which would have saved her. One arm was cut off. “My effort made me lose my hold on the car rail, and I lost a foot. AH of us were taken to a hospital, where one of the women died. The other recovered. Loss of a foot has knock ed me out of railroading. ”1 am much pleased at receiving the Carnegie medal and the monthly pension, but I only did as any other railroad man would have done under the circumstances.” 'quent pasßagos, sandy or stringy sod!* ment in the urine, scanty or discolored urine, or passages at night, be sure I ycur kidneys need attentlou.
