F. Tracy. TramHag ,A—2 Thursday Morning, June 30, 1864. BURRIED ALIVE. A Story °f Port Pillow. My name is Daniel Taylor, and my skin Is dark, as my mother’s was before me. I have lieard llial my father had a white face, but 1 think his heart aud life were blacker than ray mother’s skin. 1 was born a slave and remain ed a siava until last April, when 1 found deliv erance and shelter under tbe flag that my mas ter was tigbtlug to dishonor. I shall never forget the day when freedom came to me. 1 was working in the Helds down in Alabama, my heart was full of bitterness aud uutlerable longings. I had dreamed two long years of escape Horn my bondage; the tbougbl clung to me through the nights, and filled all the dayi with a wearied sort of nerv ous expectation. But my dreauu bad proved nothing more than dreams; the opportunity I yearned for did not come. But that day, work ing in the Helds, suddenly along the dusty road there Hashed a loug column of loyal cav alry, the old Hag flying atita head How many hearts leaped at the sight; how, like a revela tion, came the thought: “This Daniel Taylor is your opportunity!” Need I tell you how I acted upon that thought; bow in one second of time, I leaped out of slavery into freedom, and from a slave became a man? Well, joining the Hashiug column, I rode with them for days, coming at last iuto Baton Kouge, and thence, having joined a regiment of my own people, came to Memphis. But there are uot four hundred of us to-day, lor j three hundred and odd were murdered in cold blood only a week ago by Forrest's rough rai ds) s. It waa a day o! horrors—that 12th of March. There were seven hundred ol us in all in tbe fort—three hundred whites of the Thirteenth Tennessee Cavalry, aud four hundred blacks, aa I have said, all under command of brave Major Booth. The fort consisted simply of earth-works, oa which we had mounted hall a dozen gttns. We knew that Forrest had pil laged the country ail about ns, and imagined that perhaps he would pay us a visit; but tbe thought did not alatm us, though we knew, those of us who were black, that we had little to expect at the bauds of the rebels. At last, about sunrise on the mornlug of tbe 13th, For rest, with some OOOU men, appeared, and at once commenced an attack. We met the as sault bravely, aud for two hours tbe tight went ou briskly. Then a Hag of truce came in irom Forrest, askiug an unconditional surreuder, but Major Bradford—Major Booth having been wounded—declined to surrender unless the eueiny would treat those of us who were black as prisoners of war, which, of course, they re fused to do, end the flght weut on. Tbe enemy, in the uext few hour*, made several desperate charges, but were each time repulsed. At last, about four o'clock, they •eut iu another Hag. We ceased firing out of res|>ect to the Hag; but Forrest's men had uo such notions of honor and good faith. The moment we slopped firing they swarmed all about the fort, aud while the Hag was yet with drawing, made a desperate charge ou all sides, j Up to that time only about thirty of our men b«d been hurt. But iu this charge the enemy got within tbe earlbworks, and forthwith there ensued asceue which uo psu cau describe.— Seeing that ail was useless, most ol us threw dowu our arms, expecting, and mauy begging for quarter. But it was in vain. Murder was In every rebel heart; flamed in every rebel eye. Indiscriminate massacre followed Instantly upon our surrender. Borne of us, teekiug shelter, ran to the river aud tried to conceal ourselves among the bashes, but for tbe most pari iu vaiu. The savages, pursuing, shot dowu the lugilives in their tracks. There was Manuel Virhi.U as brave a ant, tier aa Mi*er ear ried a musket, lie had been a free negro iu Michigau. But votuuleered a year ago to tight for the Union, lie, with others had sought shelter under the bank of the river, but a cold blooded monster found him. and putliug a pis tol close to his head, tired, failing however to kill the brave fellow, lie was then hacked on the atm, aud ouly a day after died, delirious, In the hospital. Then there was It tbert Hall, another colored soldier, who was lying sick iu the hospital when the massacre comm meed. The devils gashed his hand horribly with their sabres, and cut oil part of bis right hand, winch he had lilted In a mute appeal for mer cy. Then there was Harrison, of the Thir teenth Tennessee, who was shot four times af ter surrender, aud then robbed of all hU ef fects. Be lore I was shot, running along the river bauk. 1 counted tiny dead Union soldiers lying in their blood. One had crawled into a hollow log aud was killed in it, auolher had got over the bank into the river, and on the board that ran out into the water. He laid ou it on his face, with his feet iu the water, and when Isaw him was already stark aud •tiffl Sev-ral had tried to bide in crevices made by the falling hank, aud .coaid not be seen without difficulty, but they were singled out and killed. One negro corporal,Jacob Wil ton, who was down on the river bank, seeing that no quarter was shown, stepped into the water so that be lay partly under it. A rebel coming along asked him what was the matter, he said lie was badly wound«d_and the rebel, after taking from his pocket book all the mo ney he had, left him. It happened to be near a fiat boat lied to Ut« bauk. Wheu all was quiet Wilson crawled into it, and got three more wounded comrades also Into It, and cut loose. The boat floated out into the channel and was found ashore some miles below.— There were alaa! few such fortunate escapes. i,was shot near the river just about dark Running fur my life, a burly rebel struck me with bis carbine, putting out one eye, ami then shot me in two places. I thought he would certaiuly leave me with that, but I was mistaken. With half a doxeu others, I eras at once picked up and carried to a ditch, into which we were tossed like so many brutes, white and black together. Tlieu they cover ed us with loose dirt and left us to die. Ob, how dark and desolate it was! Under ms were several dead, and right across my breast lay a white soldier, still alive 1 How he clutch ed and strained! How, hurt and weak as I was, with only one hand free, I struggled for air and life, feeling my strength waning every inomeul! it was a strange thing to lie there buried and yet be able to think and pray.— Maybe, friend, you have known what agony was, but you never had such pains of soul as 1 had down there iu that living grave. I thought I could feel the worms gnawin'* at my flesh; I ain sure I had a taste of what death is. with the added pain of knowing that I was not dead, and yet unable to Uve in tliat dark, dismal tomb. Bo 1 clutched and strain ed and struggled on, digging upward as I could with ray one puuy hand. At last_oh Joy!—a faint streak of light looked in; my hand had carved an avenue to the world of life! But would I dare to lift my head?— Might not aorne rebel, standing by, strike me down again on the moment? But 1 could not die there in that grave; I mint escape.— Slowly, painfully, 1 rolled tbe burden from inj breast—As was dead by that time—and then carefully orept out Irom that living death. 1' hat dark and no one was near. A moment 1 ood up on my feet; then— The next thing I remember I was In the ospital where l am now. They had found me just where I fell, and brought me to t place of safety, where, alter a while, conscious ness returned. I have been bare a week now, ami I tbiuk I shall gel well. I lie lu the cot where poor Robert Hall lay, when he was butchered by the rebels. They showed me, yesterday, a letter he had written the day belore the massacre, to bis wife. He bad learned to read and write at Memphis, after his enlistment; and used to send a mes sage to his wife aud children, who still re mained there, every week or so. This was his letter, which a surgeon bad helped him put together: ‘‘Deaii Mammy”—It ran—“ I am very sick here in the hospital, hut am bettei than I was aud hope to get well soon. They have been very kind to me; and 1 Hud it sweet to suffer for the dear flsg that gives me shelter You must not worry on my account. Tell Katy she must not forget to ssy her prayers, aud to study her lessons carefully now while she has an opportunity. And, mammy, take good care of the baby; I dreamed of her last night, and I think how sad it would be, to die and never see her little face again. But then Chaplin says it will all be right in Heaven, and be knows pelter than we do. And, mam my, don’t forget we are now free; teach both the darlings to be worthy ol' their estate." This was poor Hall's letter—it had not beeu sent, and we have no heart to send it now. He Will never see the baby’s face here, but then trod may let him see it up yonder! X hope to recover and get away from here very soon; I want to be in my place again; for I have something to aveugc now, aud I cannot bear to wait, l’osr Hall's blood is crying to me from the ground; and I want to be able, sometime, to say to Manuel Nichols' wife, up there in Michigan, that hi* fall has had a compensation. And may God speed the day when this whole slave-holders’ rebel lion—what remains of it—shall be ‘‘Buried Alive.” Late Foreign Items A descendant of Shakespeare is now resid ing in Wolvet hampton. HU name is George Shakespeare, the eldest male descendant in the direct line from Gilbert the great poet’s broth er. He U very poor and has great difficulty In obtaining by his labor daily bread for his wife and family. A writer In the London Times asks the rich men and managers of theatres to help George in his poverty. He says “Heav en lias written George's pedigree in the plain est characters upon his brow, and that he Is the living image of the poet,” It has been generally understood there is no living descen dant of the great poet’s family. A correspondent of the London Times at Paris, says: The authorities appear to Ire growing shy of the democratic origin of the Government. A day or two ago the Commissary of Police at Bordeaux paid a visit to the office of the Gi ronde, the leading journal of the department, and told the printer that if the placards of the Opposition candidates at the elections for the Councils General and Municipal were headed “Democratic Committee” they should be torn down by the police. The editor was then questioned as to whether it was bis iuleotiou to affix the obnoxious words to the list which was anuouuced to appear in his paper. The editor asked the commissary what were his motives fur putting the question; but the com missary replied that be had come there, not to give explanations, but to get them. The Salul Public of Lyons states that the hopes entertained of an abundant vintage in the Beaujolais have been partially, if not en tirely, destroyed by a storm experienced there. A Parliamentary return states that no leu than 7,824 sheep are supposed, or at least re ported, to have been killed by dogs in Ireland lo the year 1808. A correspondent of the Londou Times, writ ing from Xew York In relation to Gov. Sey mour’s action touching the World and Journ al of Commerce case says: The Governor’s letter to the District Attorney Oakly Hall, is a long, vague and rhetorical disquisition, fit only to be spoken la a debating society, upon the blessings oi Liberty.” The writer thinks the Governor iu his official unification to loyal functfonaties who are supposed to need no such lecture from the executive head ofaS’ate. "suggests Buncombe and not business." Tlje writer further says, the merchant* of Xew York, Instead of beiug convinced by the reas oning, have very generally laughed at it. Mr. Himuicutt, recently ol Fredericksburg, Va., made a thrilling and pa triolic speech, which was rapturously ap plauded. Before the speech of Mr. Hunnicutt, on motion of Mr. Sargent, of Washington, HON. SAMUEL CONY was nominated for re-election by acclamation, amid great enthusiasm, the Convention giv ing three cheers and the baud playing Yankee Doodle. [Here the reporter would remark that the splendid Baud of the 17th U. S. With regard to conveyance to the other Hospitals, inlormatiou may be obtained at the Office, at the Battery, near Castie Garden, l'rrhaps a few words with regard to the man agement of these institutions, may not he out of place. Through the kind courtesy of Surgeons McDougel, Medical Director of the Department of the East, Hoff, Medical Di rector of Transportations, Webster, Chief Surgeon of I)e Camp Hospital, Cutter, of Newark Hospital, aud their several staffs aud assistants, 1 was enabled to witness the work ings of the system. And I here declare upon my honor as a man, that I was never more happily disappointed. Everything that the broadest philanthropy, aided by boundless re sources, can do for the welfare of tbe wound ed soldiers is done. I also witnessed very many Important opera tions, but not one that I could not myself have submitted to, under like circumstances. I make this statement entirely unsolicited on the part of any—solely to relieve the anxiety of those having friends there. I shall always look hack to my visit as one of the bright spots of my life, ami hardly know which most to admire, the heroic fortitude o( the patients, or the professional skill aud lofty humanity displayed by lira S rrgeous. Should any of your readers find it convenient whilst in New Yolk, 1 have no doubt they would be well re paid for the visit. Respectfully yours, Dr. I. R. Load, Norway, (Me.) (formerly ol Portland.) A House ok Moubm.no Tubbed into one ok Joy.—In one of'the recent battles of Virginia, -ays the Boston Traveller, an officer in one of the Massachusetts regiment* was re ported in a Boston paper as having been kill ed, aud it is also stated that he was buried oil the Held. The officer, who was seriously wouuded, read the account of his death In line of the Washington hospitals, and as soon as be was able, obtained leave of absence and started for home. Here he ascertained that his relatives, relying upon the first statement, weie in mourning for his death. 'She cligct of hi* sudden appearance among his friends cau hardly be imagined. Hi* mother was usually feeble, and the belief that her son was dead had well nigh prostrated her. The reaction proved almost too much for her, but she afterwards rallied aud the house of mourn ing was turned into one of joy. The relatives had never received a denial of hi* death, al though it is said cine was made soon after ha was reported killed. canal boat laden with coal oil was burned near bordentuwn, N. J., Thuraday. There were 900 barrels of oil, and It floated, burning on the Water, (bowing the nuuiual spectacle of a canal an Are. Gov. Seymour and tho Grand Jury. It will not be denied that this gentleman is one of tba most able, most plausible, and most practical Copperheads in the country, and yet he makes,as ail Copperheads must, some egre gious blunders. Under a flimsy veil of loyal ty, and with great professions of liberality ol sentiment and a pretended desire for the free dom of speech and ofthe press, he has cunning ly sought to bring the State of New York into collision with the Federal Authorities on ac count ofthe transciantsuspension ofthe World and Journal of Commerce. The Governor very adroitly prepared the way for this collis ion of State with Federal authorities, hut hia cunningly devised plan has most signally fail ed. The Grand Jury, before whom the case waa brought, have decided that it ^“inexpedi ent to examine into the subject.’’ This was a blow, and an unexpected one, directly betweau the Governor’s eyes, and produced, no doubt, a very unpleasant sensation. It would cow setm that the World irtid the Journal of Com merce have no other resource, than to set them selves up, in the lauguage of the forged proc lamation which brought them to grief, ns “the great mouumeutal sufferers of the nineteenth ceutury.’’ Gov. Seymour must try some other expedient betore he can briug about that col lision which seems to be so uear his heart. The New York jurors possess too much of what Guizot calls the “geuius of common sense" to lie made tools of by Gov. Seymour or any other Copperhead. Protestant Pupils in Convents The Montreal Witness gives an account of a great display at the Villa Maria o'r Monk lands Consent, which took place the 8th of December, being the day of the immaculate conception of the Virgin. The most promi nent affair on the occasion was a magnificent tableau vicant of the immaculate conception. The Virgin was represented by a very hand some young woman in the attitude usual in the various pictures on the suhjuct. Around her, and beneath her feet were numerous an gels, selected from the prettiest girls of the semiuary. The show was spienld and highly gratifying to all, especially to the performers. The chief part, and that moat satisfactory to female van ity, was that of personifying the Holy Vir gin. A young Ameilcao girl, heretic as they call such, was selected to perform this role.— She was sent there to learn French, and not to become a nun. The good nuns did not miscalculate as to the moral effect on the heart of the American girl, of making her the chief point of attraction at such a public display. They boast now of her conversion, snd she has been admitted to the Church with great pomp and ceremony. Her parents arc “money-making Yankee*.’’ The Montreal Witness says the result of all tbla will he, that the daughter will lose her re gard for her parents. Woinded Maine Soldiers.—A private letter from Capt S. L. Allen, dated, City Point June 20lh, an extract from which U published in the Bath Times, contains tho following in formation in relation to Maiue wounded sol diers in that hospiral: Aibiou Keuuerson of tliii city, a member of Co. D, 3d Maine reg iment, has had bis right leg amputated below the knee, he Is doing well and In good spirits; Daniel Brookings of Gardiner, Co. C, Sd Maine, leg amputated In about the same place, alto doing well; Augustus F. Emery is wounded in th* hip and Hartwell Hatch wounded lu thumb, both of the old 3d Maiue. Mr. Xocktoo, of Co. G, 32nd Maiue regiment is sick. Mr. Alien states, wounded began to come in yesterday morning. There are about two thousand here now, and more to come in. We happened to have a lot of goods with us, which was very lucky indeed as the other ag enda* had their own tranaports, and they do not know whan they will arrive. There ate more Maine ttufe here than from any other State, I believe.” The Point Well Stated. The Nashville (Tenn.) Union brings the question forcibly home to thoae at the North calling Ihcmeelve* “conservatives,’’in the fol lowing manner: “We are for the negro where he is,” say the conservative*. Very well, lut us see where tile negro is. He is at work on rebel forts and entrenchment*; he Is ou the plantations rais ing meat and breadstuff* for the rebel aruiy; he Is lu the factory weaving butter-nut jeans for the rebel aoldiers; he is in the foundries casting rebel cannon; he is in the shop mak ing rebel shoes, hats, sabres, bridles and sad dles; he is in the camp waiting ou rebel oltl cera; be la lu the fort working rebel guns, and he is in guerilla bands to murder Union men. Uaii ice better not take the negro into our handt, or do you prefer to let the uugro stay where he la, and aid powerfully in destroying the government?” High Prices—The True Cause. It ie quite the custom Just now to attribute the present high prices to an expanded cur rency. We are IlippaulJy told that this is the one cause of commercial deraugement, and that if the curreucy were only reduced to the standard ol three years ago, prices would come dowu iu the tame proportiou. J.el us think a moment, aud we shall see the utter absurdity of such a conclusion. No matter what it iho medium for making exchanges, or what it curreucy or what D lawful money— whether it be gold, or bank notes, or treasury notes—tour prices always were aud always must be high prices. Europe learned it doting her Napoleonic wars; we learned it iu the war of lbl2, aud the same stein teacher com pels us to submit to it now. The reason is clear aid simple. Production is diminished, aud, by the waste of war, cousumpuou is in creased. The war draws the fsrmer’s sons from lire plow, and fewer acres are sown and smaller harvests ate reaped. The mechanic aits suffer in the same proportion. Scarcely less than iwo-llfths of our adult male popula lion are now devoting ail their lime and ener gy to putting dowu the rebellion, Of these, a vast number are iu the Held with our brave geuerals, a large part mau our ships of war, now couuled by hundred*, and many are iu hospitals; while those employed in (he navy yaids, irou-works, machine-shops, and iu the manufacture of military clothing and equip ments, and iu producing munitions and sup p ies, swell the aggregate to the limit we have named. This great class of producers cannot be withdrawn from their ordiuary pursuits without a great diminution iu the products ol j the country. When the supply is greatly di tuinished, aud the demand nut only continued but increased, prices must advance. There is no possible help for it. If we could return to a specie basis to-morrow, it would still be a war basis, at war prices. There is but oue exception to this advauce iu prices, aud that is the Government bonds, and they are no exception to the rule, and only follow the general law of supply and de maud The necessities of war have made them abundant, aud therefore they are cheap hut when the war ends the supply will cea e aud they will be dear—and the man who in vests In them now is sure of a liberal profit. A reduction of the currei cy will be well. and wu have the official assurance of the Sec retary of tha Treasury that it is now taking place, but it is not the infallible panacea for financial disorder that many suppose. Ur. Cisco, the Assistant Treasurer of the United Stales at New York, states that he has caucel led forty-on* millions oflnterest bearing legal tender* withlu two weeks, and that he now holds thirty millions of greenbacks—and yel bread aud butter, wheat aud corn and cloth are no cheaper. The first cause of the increased cost of all commodities, gold included, is altogether out side of Hie currency. A reduudaut currency Increases the misfortune, but does not create It. Hut suppose the Government does con tract the curreucy; what is to prevent the State hanks, that give no security for circula tion, from quadrupling tlietr paper Issues, as they have already doue iu many parts of the •ouutry What, theu, can be more absurd than to main the Government or Treasury Depart ment the scape-goat for evils that are simply consequent upon the most gigantic war the world ever knew. If the body has a lever, It just to make the hand that supplies its want* responsible for it* unnatural condition?—.V. j Examiner of June 23se of selecting delegates io attend the District onventiun to be'boldeu at Portland July 7th. TOIiTAAND AND VICINITY. George F. Mouitox We are pained to be called to add to our record of deatbe during tbe past few weeks, at that Aceldama of our citizens, (the State of Virginia,) tbe young man of seventeen, whose name is at the head of this notice. Though not yet eighteen, be has been al most two years in his country’s service, with out hiving made even a transient visit to his now widowed mother, who resides and keeps little shop in Free street. We learn that he has been specially oom mcnded during ail the term of bis enlistment, by both his captain aud tbe colonel of bie reg iment, the 17lb, Co. B, lor his regular habits and fidelity, both as a youth aud soldier, aud that he was held in more than ordinary esteem and regard by bis fellow soldiers. He wa9 about starting by direction, at that moment received from his captain, to ascerta’u wheth er the Indiana regiment was between his reg iment and the enemy—it proved it was— when he was pierced by a bullet from a sharp shooter, of which he seems to have died almost instantly. He was an only son—dutiful and affectionate—aud kepi his mother informed weekly of whatever occurred of interest to himself aud bis company, suggesting and ad vising whatever he thought would be useful in the management of her little business af fairs. In her deep affliction she is sustained by the ooneolation of a strong Christian faith aud a trust that his change lias been a happy one. Tribute of Respect Died, Monday, May 30, 1864, at Dougia8 Hospital, Washington, D. C., from a wound received uear Spotlsyl vania, Va., Major Arch Dorillout Leavitt, 16lh lleg’t Me. Volt. Whereas, by the providence of God we are called to mourn the lose of a dear brother, who freely gave hit life to the service of his country, tberefoie, Resolved, That while we bow iu submission to the will of God, in thus sadly afflicting us, we glsdly bear witness to tbe many uobie qualities, and luteliectua! abilities, of our brother, which gave him access to the hearts ol all who kaew him. Resolved, That iu him our Fraternity has lost an honored aud a worthy member, and tbe Nation an able aud zealous defender. Resolved, That as a testimonial of our re aped for tlie memory of onr departed brother we drape our badges for thirty days. Resolved, That a copy oi these resolutions be sent to the relatives of the deceased, as an evidence of our heartfelt sympathy in their grevlous affliction. Harhison M. Pkatt. Atrocertm I). SuAtx. J. Howard Mielett. Hall of X, of Delta Kappa Kpsilou, dune 28th, 1864. Municipal Court—June 29. Rodman Townseud waa adjugej guilty ou a search and seizure process, and paid a fine of $20 and costs. X. Webb, Esq., for the defense. Patrick Crosby, for keeping a dog without a license, was lined $4 51 and costs. Com mitted. Robert Burroughs, for keeping a dog with out a license, paid $5.17 flue and costs. Martin Kelley and Timothy Cochrane, lads of 13 or 14 yean of age, were brought up charged with larceny of a small quantity of lead from the Grand Trunk Depot. Kelley was acquitted, but Cochran was convicted and sentenced to thirty days Imprisonment in jail. Detection ok Spurious Bank Notes.— An iufAitibie guide to aid in the detection of counterfeit bank notes, something more than the usual ‘•Detector,” which cannot, by the greatest prudence, be made perfectly reliable, lias long been desired by business* men. Mr. Laban Heath has recently published a little volume which seems to entirely satisfy ibis want. In compiling tbit book he bas been favored with engravings from tba Bank Note Co., with which he it enabled to give to every merchant and accountant a standard of gen uine bank note engravings, with which b« may compare all bills coming into bis bauds, and readily detect the good from the worthless.— This system has received testimonials from the highest sources, and therefore la entitled to the greatest confidence. E. R. Russell, Foreign Money Teller of Suffolk Bank, Bos ton, says of tbit book, “I consider it the best work on the subject ever offered to the pub lic.” It is also highly endorsed by Cashiers and Tellers In the Manufacturers Trader’s, Mechanics' International and Canal Banks, in this city. Mr. Heath or bit agent is now in town, and will call on our merchants wbo will do well to examine and test its merits. Galvanic Treatment.—We would call the attention of those seeking health, to the advertisement of Dr. W. X. Darning, in an other column of this paper. Dr. D. lias not been in this city quite 18 months, yet he has gained a reputation unparelled Injtbe history of medicine, in bis speciallity of treating chronic diseases. Dr. D. has had a thorough Medical Education and an experience of over twenty years as an Electrician. He has worked bard to dig out the hidden mysteries In the Vegeta ble aa welt as the Electrical Kingdom, and bos combined them In the form of extracts and and Electrical Medicines, together with Electro Magnetism. With these batteries combined he is able to purge the system thoroughly of all taints. Dr. D. does not use a common gal vanic battery, with a harsh, coarse, unpleas ant current, which makes it a dread to those that use U; but he uses a smooth, invigorat ing, stimulating, soothing, Electro Magnectlc instrument of his own Invention, leavlug the patient, after au application, In a quiet, yet In an Invigorated condition, which lasts for houss. Give him a call. Office No. 11,Clapp's Block, corner of Congress and Elm streets.
Festival.—The ladies of the Christian Commission have arrauged lor a Concert by tlie children of oar public schools, at the new City Hail on the morning of July 4th. A line opportunity will thus be afforded old aud young for rational enjoyment, ami at the same time enable them to contribute a little towards the relief of our suffering soldiers. At the same place, In connection with the Juvenile Couceit, tables w ill be furnished with such luxuries aud substantial:, as will solicit money from every body. To enable the ladies to render their refresh ment tables attractive and profitable, dona tions from the patriotic public will be required. We hope the "Home Guard' will send to the new City liaii strawberries, cream, cakes, flowers, aud also meats, Ac., so that ourladits who do the hard work may be encouraged •till to labor. The at he.-Manager Myers produces anoth er sensational drama this evening, trout the pea of John Brougham, Esq., entitled the “Peep O'Day.” I tit full of exciting situa tions—an Irish fair, characteristic dance by twenty-four people, delicious music aud lots of fun. The entire company are required in Us production, and we aball be surptised if it does not make a hit. The weather is now so cool that Deering Hall is a most agreeable re sort. A Card. Editor:—Tour correspondent either unintentionally or otherwise, suppress ed several material facta In his account of the disclosures ot Hildreth. If the public have any interest in such matters, they have an in terest in knowing the whole truth, and It Is not a little amusing to see the efforts of little minds, through garbled and one sided statements, to try to iujure those connected therewith, either as Attorneys or Magistrates. First. The plff. himself tcstiSes that Hil dreth offered him (the ireditor) the bank I book In question, showing a deposit of $60, in St. John, 11 he would release him from arrest, but, not believing it of any value, he refused to take it. Secoud. That when he sent for Mr. Hovey to act as his attorney, aud told him of the book, Mr. H. at once asked him why he did not offer it to hia creditor; to which he re plied that he had done so and he (the credit or) refused to take it. Third. It did not appear in evidence be fore the sittiug magistrates, that Mr. Hovey had ever received a siugle dollar from the avails ol said deposit or book, although one of the magistrates (Merrill) suggested to the creditor's attorney, that he should examine Mr. Hovey on that point—that they could not infer it without proof—but the attorney declined. Fourth. The debtor offered to assign to the creditor all the interest be might still have in said book and deposit, If any. which assignment, one of the magistrates (Meriill) thought by the Slh aud 15ib Sec. of Ch. US of the liav. Slat., entitled him to ba released from arrest. But this assignment would, of course.be subject to his attorney’s claim for disburs meats and services wiiioh did not seem to suit the interests of the creditor, who bad made the mistake of locking his debtor up in jail, instead of takiug the accurity offered him, au l which, he now suspects, Mr. Hovey made available as cash. He will undoubted ly be wiser next time. So much for this tempest In a teapot. Serenade.—While at Augusta yesterday afternoon, the Band of the 17th U. S. Infan try called upon Gov. Cony, at the State House, and treated him to one of their best serenades. The Governor invited them into his private room. The musicians suffered, however, for they lost their chance at the 1st and ltd tables at the hotel, and were obliged to put up with sole-leather steak and cold potatoes. Grant's Coffee and Spice Mills.—W« learn that Mr. J. Grant has recently estab lished new Spice Mill out of the city, which in addition to his facilities in town, will enable him to meet any demands which may be made npon him. Mr. Grant is well known to our merchauu aa a successful aud obliging inanu facturer, and his Coffee and fcpices are second to none. Incendiary Fibb in Saco.—An unoccu pied building, owned by Chas. Hill, formerly used as a slice factory by Daniel K. Somes, and standing in that part of Saco known as “Somesville,” was destroyed by tire Tuesday nlpM. Boss,$500; uninsured. Tut uuiou preparatory lecture will be held at Third Faiish Church Thursday evening. Kev. Mr. Walton will preach. BY TELEGRAPH -to mm KVfcNlifU PAPUKft. l'rom AVtr Orleana. New York, June 29. Shortly alter, a gentleman walk j.g Dear his meadow, discovered a woman in the act of takiug his crauberries. He remon strated with her aud asked her if she was not aware that there was a law against it. She arose from her stooping posture, shook her booy Unger at bim, and In a cracked voice cried out— I' ii an old woman of eighty-ons, f ra .berry law haa just begun M n make la are but 1M not mind ’em. I’ll pick cranberries whoever 1 Had them Wo are reuiiuded of the above story by the peculiar state ol aff.irs now existing in our G ild market. A few years ago when the fugitive slave law was in iorce, the Wall Street gentlemen were very devotional in their revereuce lor the laws of the land.— Then “the laws must be obeyed," said they; but now Congress haviug passed a-law to pre vent speculation in gold, that the necessaries ol life may not become so expensive as to de prive the laboring man of needed com'orts, these s nne gentlemen note conspire together to evade It in every possible manner, by their actions seeming to ssy, Men make list but i’U not mind ’em, I'Ll pick cranberries wherever 1 and .hem.*' —[Concord Daily Monitor. TJxrrEri States Lottekv. Some fac tious gentlemen has perpetrated the loilow ing. The points ue.ed no explanation: United States Lottery! Great Induces meuls! Bitlliaut Schemes! All prize and no blanks! Tickets for this Lottery for either classes 1 or 2, distributed gratis. No interim! Kevenue Stamps required. Tbe drawing of a prize number will entitle th; fortunate individual to: 1 new, highly IlnUhed musket; 1 bran uew suit of clothes; 1 pair ol shoes and stockings; 1 elegant blanket; 1 nice haversack and knapsack 1 nice cartridge box, with 00 rounds of am munition; 1 nice tin plate, tin cup, knife, fork anti spoon. In addition to this, the holder of tbe lucky number will have a regular income of $13 per month, and “when this cruel war is over,” will 1 receive a capital prize of $100. With such inducements, the manager hopes to be largely patronized by an appreciating public. This is no humbug, calcb-penny in stitution, but a genuim* lottery, iu which the managers will fulfil as they promise. Legalized by an act of Congrcas approved March 3, 1863.
