Jimmy Keola has surprised his best friends by tho way ho tikes hold of the duties of his now position. Representatives Richards and McBrydo aro the dudos of tho House, judging by the s'zo of their button-holo bouquets. Tho Speaker also sports one, but his is modest in comparison with the othor two. When not engaged in business for tho Houso the Sergoant-at-arms puts in his timo caressing his mustache. Ministors Damon anel Smith aro constant attendants on tho Houso, Tho Sorgoant-at-arms of tho Houso is ovidently now to tho business. Spectators wero conspicuous by their absence this morning. See 7th page for yosterdjy's records. Bigotry Run Wild. Editor Bulletin: Tho P. C. Advertiser must sure- ly have but little use for its columns when it copies such un mitigated trash from tho Mission ary Herald for June, ontitkd u "Bravo Christian Girl." That articlo at ouco opens tho question: Aro Catholics Christians or ,are thoy not? Tho statomont that a Catholic fathor enticed his own daughter on shoro from a Protestant mis sionary vessel, urged hor to ohew tobucoo, nnd throw off the habili ments of civilization and don thoso of heathendom, etc., etc., is one of thoso fishy yarns only digested by fools nnd bigots. The evidonco as to above, strange to say, is all on ono side. MiS3 Hoppiu, it isprosumed, owes hor support to the Herald's pro prietors, and although no doubt a good raombor of a good, bigoted, and notoriously ignorant class, it would have boon much moro satisfactory had tho public in general had tho benefit of tho ovidenco of tho girl's father, not to mention that of the priest. No Christian could have written such silly twadello which oven if true, anel wo donv it proves nothing for or against Catholics. The church is a place for prayer, meditation, reflection, and instruc tion; and not l'ko certain si.-call-od chapels, run for coin on half nnd half principles, part restau rant, part concert hull, mutual admiration store, and useful at n pinch as barracks or a dime musoum. Ono of old said with undoubted authority: "My Father's houso will bo called a houso of prayer, and yo havo mado it a don of thieves." History repeats itself. Thoro is a certain class of Pro tostants in this nnd othor com munities who would rather hear a mangy cur of their own porsua tion horcl and snarl, than' a Cathoho nightingalo sing, and thoy are apparently bont on driv ing their more liberal brothron into tho arms of Paine, In Ingorsoll Co., by light ning express, but bo far wo are not aware that one single Catholic has boardod tho train, holding a through ticKot to Chaos. As a class Roman Catholic prieists aro models of dovotiou, modesty, meoknesH. charity and uolf abnegation. Living witnesses aro with us horo. Independent. Honolulu, June 15, 1895. v;j .'M s$

Tho timo nuulo by Burt Loo dii tho trial heats last wcolc but tears out tho old saying that '"trotting horses liavo no parti cular lineage," and aro not, so to speak "born to the purple." Burt Leo was picked up lor a raiTiagc horse without refer ence to his sire or dam ho had the right appearance and a 3inart gait that pleased his owner, his possibilties have not lialf been shown and there is no tolling what ho may dovelop into before next season's races. One. of tho 'etof the olden linao trottc )u tch man, was a ccnimon r horso without any thorougaUed origin. Tho trotter of today is but the result of the careful selection in mat ing animals. Harus, tho prodigy who first beat 2:14, was sired bj an unknown fish-huckster' s hore, who oven after ho had gotten the wonderful cold pull ed a wood cart. There may bo other horses in tho islands tyhioh, if properly handled, will Jo ovon hotter work than Burt Lee, their joints may want lub ricating and if that is tho only trouble there is nothing better than injections of oil provided you get tho right kind and there is only one "right kind" inrl that is "Vacuum." We have been hand ling these oils for years and can recom mend thorn as the safest oils manufactured for use on sugar Trill or other fine mechiuery. The famous GOO W is in use on nearly all the plantations here and in most of the electric .light and power works in the United States. In a letter to She manufacturers Thos. A. Edison says: "I find that tho oils You hnvo furnished, Hnvo proved very satisfactory." The Vacuum Oil is made in several brands of which wo carry GOO W, Vacuolino Kngino and Arctic Engine Oil, this latter for electric light, cent irifugal and general high speed work. It is particularly adap ted to the Edison system, be ing used by the Edison Com pany and recommended by them. When it commos to price Nothing equals Vacuum Because it is lusting. Wo handle the celebrated iJonnsylvania Lawn Mower because we consider them the best in use. Other styles have been put upon tho market only to bo relegated to the back yard but you never find a "Pennsylvania" that is not Jit for use. They aro easy to inn and no trouble to keep in order. Wo have them with 10 to 21 inches blade. Don't fllo a mower blade; Just put a little oil on it And sprinklo with emory powder, Then work the mtiohino back And forward and tho blado is sharp, encd. Wo carry the largest stock of Blasting Powder and the celebrated Hercules Powder in this' market. The latter is made especially for us for this climate. No one has ever questioned our assertions re garding packing. Our stock comprises all sorts used in engine rooms and the selection has been carefully made. Wo Jiave a full stock. Wo have lately added to our 'goods used in the out of town districts a lot of Sherman's celefmited Mexican Saddle Trees. They wore made to order for us and will fit both the rider and tho horse. Nothing better in this lino lias over been offered tho public and tho prices are as tonishingly low. THE PACIFIUAOTAHE Co. Cummins' Mock. OBSERVATIONS. KILOHANA ART LEAGUE. Tlic Spring i:lillillloii to Clone on Tliurntlii)'. What was originally intended to be the closing evening view of tho Kilohana Art League's spring exhibition was held on Saturday evening. Mr. A. Mr. Hutchinson, Prof. JJorgor and son received tho visitors, while Miss King acted as door-keeper. There is to bo another view on Wcdnosday evening, owing to many having beon kept away by the rain Saturday evening. Tho exhibition will close on Thurs day. Allou Hutchinson's "May," an ideal portrait in low roliuf profile, is admired by all visitors. His relief profile of Captain Eabcock is regarded as one of his best works. D. Mrs. It. i, Ogilviu contributes a noteworthy effort in a California sunset. A still life painting by Mrs. Piorro Jones is replete with merit. Tho water color section has some oxcellnnt pictures. Tuck er shows a number of creditable productions, the best perhaps being Kualoa. Conspicuous on tho platform in tho music alcove is a lanai sot of furniture decorated in pylography, or poker etching, by Mrs. W. M. Graham. This is a branch of in dustrial art that, in this ora of new industries for Hawaii, it would be an acWnntago for young people to learn. BEDROOM SUITS: In oak or birch aro selected by people whoso tastes run to the refined and elegant. For room decoration as well as for service there is a certain ele gance and richness about these woods not found in any other, and yet the prices aro not what you would imagine them to be. Birch sots with dressing cases having choval plate mirrors are preferred by ladies, because the long glass allows them a view of tho full figure. Tho old fashioned large square glass is quite as fashionable and as much in demand because tho bureaus to which they are at tached give larger space for clothing. "Wo have them in all styles and in modern designs. Price from $25 to $60. SECRETARY BOOK CASES: Wall pockets and shelves for books are out of date; fashion demands something more modern and more artis tic in design than you've been used to. Books in rich binding require appropriate surroundings. They cannot be obtained except in art furniture such as we show you. As in other articles, oak in antiquo designs is tho favo rite for nook cases; rich carving adds to tho appearance and increases the cost, wo have them both plain and fancy and tho workmanship governs tho price; tho man of limited means can get something to suit his finances with the same facility as tho man who has "money to burn." SHftVING'STAHDS: There's economy in shaving if a man could only learn to handle a razor without danger of losing his skin. But women folks have such a fashion of putting things in out of tho way places, that there is little encouragement for a man to Eractico the barber's act upon imsolf unless he is certain that he can find his shaving materials when he wants them. Shaving Stands are made for shavers, and ono of them in the house obviates all annoy ancesthere's a place for everything and everything in to place. We have fifty different styles for you to select from, and you can get one at your own price. In these days whon ladies require many changes of cloth ing, or where1 tho family house hold is made up of many littlo ones, there is a demand for spaco in which to put things away. Tho bureau drawers aro crowded and few houses in Honolulu aro provided with necessary closets. A Chiffo nier, then, is necessary in every homo whore storeroom is scarce. These aro made now-a-days for tho uso of gontlemon as well as ladies, and the designs for ono are quite as pretty as for another; somo have a drop lid which unfolds to the gaze a regular recopticle for pens, ink, paper and other articles of stationary, Birch and oak aro tho ruling Woods and tho price depends upon tho size from $14 to $27.50. CHINA CLOSETS: There's scarcely a family in Honolulu, or anywhere else on the Islands, who has not a few choice bits of china stowed away in, out of the way places. Give them light let your frionds see thorn. You like tho admiration of your frionds for your tasto in decorating your homes why not, oxtond it to your china and bits of crockery? China Closets in oak aro tho proper thing and a dining room is not complete without ono tho price has been an nast but over eading furni io States has obstaclo in tho production by a hum liiiikor' in t helped us to offer them to you at redicdlously low prices. See those" with tho oval glass. Prices range from $20 to $45. DlllpS: Each an original in design; none are copies. All the best styles from Greek to modern times are represented. Those intended for large rooms aro heavy and solidly carvod. Othors have more lightness and grace; less elegance. As to price. Hand carving takes time and money; tho more carving on a table the more it costs us and you. Rich wood is expensive, the larger tho table the larger the price. In Antique Oak from $7 to $25. i v i

Mr. Kamauoha wob oloctcd by a good majority ovor Mr. Richards this morning on Vico Sponkor. As Speaker Naoue will be soldom absent the election of Mr. Kamau oha can hardly be construed as being for the purposo of Rotting surcease from his much tilkingon the lloor. What do tho local knights of the willow think of this record, coming from London under dato of May 20: "Thoro has been a wonderful week's crickot. thirteon centuries having beon scored in tho big matohos. Nottingham made soven hundred and twonty six runs, tho rocord for county crickot, defeating Sussex by an innings and throe hundred and sovonty-eight runs." WHEREFORE THE CHANGE After removing yard refuse for two or throe years, tho men of tho gubige carts aro ordered bj tho Board of Health to leavo it alone, and only curry off housohold waste In consequence of those new instructions neoplo have to burn tho loaves that drop from their trees. Tuib causes n smoke nuisinco nil ovor town, besides groat danger of fno. You may keep your oars opon now for tho firo boll. It seems as if tho present government is ono of experiments. It jumps nt Jiew-fauglod notions and drops them after the oxpoiidituro of a heap of mono'. A white ago it imported a street sweopor, which filled the people's oyos with dust for a week or two and was then relegated to tho old iron yard. Why it bogan removing yurd ro fuso, and then all at onco stop ped, is something no follow can understand. Tho now rulo has al ready caused neighborly quarrels all over town, evorybody who has trees annoying first ono neighbor and thon another, according to tho way tho wind blows, At tho iamo tirao newspapers have never had raoro requests on file to call attention to unsanitary cpnditions. in regard to poi shops and other necessary institutions, than at tho present time. Let us bo consoled, however, by correspondence in American ynpors which represents this as "the host government the islands ever had.'1 FORMOSA. Russia's interference with tho acquisition by Japan of tho prizes she honorably and fairly won from China is probably to bo dobitod with tho unfortunato state of affairs in Formosa. Thoro is no doubt that the Chinoso, thus encouraged by Russia, aro at tho "bottom of tho Formosan declara tion of an "independent'' republic, whioh is as much of a fako ro public as some othors that might 1)0 named say in South and Central America. That the in stigation of tho rebellion against Japanese occupation has a Chi nese sourco is provod by tho fol lowing proclii mation thathai been pi-sted up in the island: China has beon so insulted by tho Japanese that all the Chinoso should be angry with thom. Thoroforo, we the literati and all tho populaco ought to join to gether and oppose tho Japanoso if thoy daro to land. If anyone sympathises with tho Japaneso thoy will bo soized and killed at onco. Howovor, if Japan id not actual ly interforod with by Eussia, or Franco as tho tool of Russia Gormany as reportod having with drawn from tho aoticn against the poaco troaty thore is littlo doubt that she will mako shoitor work of tho For'nosan rebels than aho did of tho Chinoso in thoir resist ance to hor espousal of the causo of reform in Corea. Speaking of Coroa tho fino hand of outsido intriguo is mani fest thoro as well as in Corea. Tho Japan Qazetto rocoived by last mail Bays: "Tho politician who throughout Ihib tried to thwart Japan in all tho attompted inno vations has succeeded to power and once more tho queen's star is in tho ascondant. That lady is a romarkablo schemer and if thoro is one thing arouses her angor it is Japanose interference. Holl hath no fury liko a woman scorn ed, says Connreve, and it is not in an imperious woman's nature to forgivo tho haughty lecture Count Inouye felt called upon to read tho ambitious quoen. Japan, indeed, hns made a gravo error in seeking to reform Coroa by saga cious counsel. Thore is only ono way whereby that cesspool of cor ruption and cruelty can bo cloans ed and that is at the point of the bayonot. If Japan hesitates to use military forco it is not impos sible Russia may. Tho same paper quotes from a vernacular papor that "Corea is disgusted with Japanrso statesmen on soo ing tho result of their labor as shown by tho roturn of tho Liio tuiig Peninsula, and apparently thinks such a powerful nation as Eussia a raoro roliablo friend than tho small and powerless ompiro of Japan.'' It is further stated that Homo Minister Pak has intrigued with "tho henpeck ing queen" and initiated a policy so inimical to Japan that the pro Japanese Ministers havn reaigned. The advice of Court Inouye is ut terly disregarded, and it is said that "tho Powr upon whom Corea is now relying is raporUd to b making suspicious move ments, and Corea is like a vestal without a rudder drifting help lessly on the rough wavss of th ocean." Japan has a hard row to hoe, but since her adoption of civil ization and parliamentary govern ment she has done so well that it may fully bo hoped that she will como out of tho crucible well refiuod and bo a potent factor in the civilization of all Asia. It cannot be denied that the roads in Honolulu and suburbs are kept in a very fair and good condition. The road supervis or is devoting all his time and as much money as he can get in keeping the roads in good order and the driving and rid ing public appreciates his ef forts. Nowadays, we do not drive intheold-fashioned brakes that used to shake the in sides out of the driver. We do not either patronize old stiff legged horses the motions of which were mild, only in com parison with riding on a rail out of a western town. Civil ization has advanced and we go right along with it. Ho nolulu can boast of as fine turnouts as any big cities in the United States. The horses used are of superior breed, and every stranger admires the fine stock seen in our streets and on the race track. But it is not given to everybody to possess horse and carriage. It takes monev to get them and to keep them, and for that rea son we are going to meet the demands of those to whom phaetons and thoroughbreds are a grade too high. Buy a Monarch and the roads of Ho nolulu will be equal pleasure to the rider of that famous wheel as they are to the swell horseman and driven. The Monarch bicycle is among the high grade wheels. It is now the favorite in the United States and the Monarch Cycle Manu facturing Company is simply unable to attend to the orders which are crowding in, so that it has to enlarge its factories trreatlv to meet the demand. We have succeeded in securing an invoice of eleven which will arrive here during the next week and we can offer them at a very reasonable figure. The Monarch frame is made of the best quality of spirally drawn Mannesmann Steel Tub ing and it is built for appear ance as well as for speed. The Monarch frame is very rigid, very strong, very light, very graceful and very comfortable. All Monarch bearings are fitted with the Binns Patent Ball Holder and Dust Protector, which makes it possible to re move the cones of all lateral bearings without disturbing the balls. The narrow tread on a bicy cle is the latest fad. The Monarch claims that there is a limit to all things and the Mon arch tread will oe 3-4 inches, which is the narrowest claim consistent with the safety of the rider. A Kingfisher bicycle lamp will perhaps be suitable for Waikiki, while a Demon lamp seems to indicate meeting with the mounted police. The Monarch racers for ladies and gentlemen will commend themselves to everybody who enjoys a spin. We will at some future day devote more space to fully describe the su perb bicycle. As soon as our invoice arrives we will invite you to inspect the wheel, if they are not all ordered before hand. The Hawaiian Hardware Co, Ltd. Oppoatt BpreckeU Block, 007 POST eB'X'RXCWXV. "The Monarch will win" is an expression heard in bicycle races oftener than anything else. It has not yet been heard here because Monarch Bicycles have not yet been introduced, but when they are they will not take second place in speed, weight or quality of material. The Monarch is just what its name implies, the Kingt of bicycles and we are authorized agents for the Hawaiian Islands. This wheel is made by a comoanv whose standing in the manufacturing world is at the head; they are putting money in their wheels and selling them at a low price because they are not anxious to make themselves rich in a year. For that reason they have put the price within the reach of everyone. I he coming models m tne Monarch are No.'s 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12. These include racing and ladies' wheels. They are fitted with either "Demon" or "Kingfisher" lamps, and with this on the front end you can see so far ahead of you that nipnt ridinc is more of a plea sure than you have been used to. With a Monarch Bicycle you don't have to keep a lamp on the back to keep drivers from running over you; the mechanism is sucn that a nign rate of speed is attained with out much muscular power. our prices of the genuine Monarch wheel will be twenty five per cent less than you have ever heard of a first class bicycle being sold for. We can do it because we are the manufacturers' agents and have no middle man s profits to pay. Call at our store and examine our Agency papers and secure a handsomely illustrated cata logue. HOPP No 74 Kliifr Strool, It has been remarked by visitors tuat lor vanoty of goods, quality and ttyle, tho shops of Honolulu compare favorably with thoso in tho largest cities in tho United States. Theso remarks aro not strange to us becauso wo aro familiar with tho needs of tho people, wo know that their tastes aro tho same as othor people, though they aro to a degree isolated from tho rest of tho world. But thoy aro a reading peoplo and thoy aro apt scholars; thoy havo tho samo amount of ability to copy tlio ideas or otnors or create now ones as tho ladies of Now York or Boston. To cator to tho tastes of tho diil'oront people hero requires tact, ability and coin; in tho selection of oods, both as to design, quality and price, all of tlio business qualifications of man aro brought into play. If wo did not exorcise it in our corner of tho mercantile world how could wo offer all shades of genuine woolen goods, not shoddy, but woolen at fifty cents a yard, whon every othor dealer in Hono lulu soils tho identical goods for sovontv-nvo conts ana a dollar. Nor do wo confine ourselves to a single shade wo havo them in endless va riety. Tho samo may bo said of our stock of all-wool flannels. Who ever heard of thom going for less than fifty conts a yard. Thoy bring that because thoy are worth it to any one who wants thom, but wo lot thom go to you at thirty-five cents a yard, or threo yards for a dollar. You can't realize it but wo can prove it to you as easy as wo can show you tho largest and handsomest collec tion of white goods of every description ever shown in Honolulu.
