An Assertion Tluil It AVII1 lie Controlled tjy the British. New Yokk, May 21. An Ottawa dispatch says: It may bo taken as a settled fact that the Pacific cable will be, like its promoters, essen tially British. Under its treaty with the United States, Hawaii is refusing to allow any foreign power to acquire any portion of Hawaiian territory. Tho United Stated having given an adverso answer to Great Brit ain's provision to --eeure Neckur or Bird island as a fable station the Fanning island route will be adopt ed. The link from Fanning island to Victoria is 800 miles longer than to Neckar island, but this, it ap pears, will not mitigato against the effectiveness of the cable. All tho tenders for the construction of tho cable have been given assurances to this effect. Fanning island is r. British possession, so that all the landing places of the cable will be in the empire. m m m FOSTKIt IN HIGH PAVOIC. The American Diplomat May Control the Afl'airH of China. Washington, May 23. John W. Foster, who assisted Li Hung Chang in the peaco negotiations between China and Japan, has apparently made a favorable impression upon the diplomats of the East. A let ter written by one of these gentle men to a friend in this city says: "The documents ho prepared at Hiroshima, which have been pub lished in Japan and China, have brought him many expressions of admiration. Practically, all the oflicial correspondence of the envoy in relation to Japan is prepared by Mr. Foster. Ho seems to take in tho situation at a glance, and is al ways ready in any turn of affairB to fall right in line and return shot for shot. I think if Mr. Foster would accept, tho Chineso Govern ment would give him a post at Peking that would virtually, place the control of affairs in his hands." ASKKD TO MHDIATI2. The United States as an Arhi ter. Washington, May 22. Tho United States has been again ask ed to act as intermediary in an in ternational complication. This timo tho trouble is between Franco and Venezuela, resulting in a com plete termination of diplomatic re lations between them.. Tho French Minister at Caracas recently was given his paBtmoit", wheroupon Franco bont two warshipg to take away her Ministor and all tho Le gation archives. At tho samo timo Franco handed to tho Venezuelan Minister at Paris his passports, and ho summarily depaited. PROMOTION'S IN TI IK NAVY Itcar-Adinlral Monde's Itctlre mpiit Advance Seven OiH eerx. A SUIISIDY FAVOUR!). The London "Times" on the Development oi" the PacHie. London, May 24. The Times this morning, in a leader on the Pacific mail subsidy scheme, says that if there is one feature by which the history of tho twentieth cen tury is likely to be distinguished beyond all others, it bids fair to bo the development of the open shores of the Pacific bya movement' of civilization of tho world llke'that already seen on tho shores of the Mediterranean and of tho Atlantic. The article considers that the Government is justified in bestow ing an annual subsidy of 100,000 on the Pacific Mail and cable ser vice. It suggests that the amount now absorbed by Bechualand might be liberated by giving Bechualand to Cape Colony, and, under a pro tectorate, to a chartered company. TIII2 MUKDEKKIt OF L13NZ. Five Kurds Are Relieved to Have Killed tho Ricyellst. CoNSTANTiNOi'i.E,May21. Arme nian advices say that tho names of five Kurds, who aro said to bo the murderers of Frank C. San Josi: (Costa Itica-), May 23. Nicaragua lias been provoking this country so persistently that war teems inevitable. Tho Govern ment supposed the relations be tween tho two States were friendly until Nicaragua suddenly stopped all communications. It went bo far as to take away tho telegraph ollico at tho frontier, thereby violating a treaty. Tho Government tent several telegrams to the Nicaraguan Government, but the latter refused to answor. When Britain's ultimatum was received by Nicaragua Costa Itica offered to aUt in arranging mutters peace fully. Nicaragua did not oven design to return a polite word of thank". Formosa a ltcpuhlic. Tho Governor, Chang Ting Sung, has been made President and has noti fied tho foreign representatives. wi Charge d'All'airs. Washington, May 21. Frank P. Hastings to-day presented his credentials to tho State Department as Charge d'Affairs of the Republic of Hawaii. It is understood hero that a minister will not be appoint ed to succeed Lorrin A. Thurston. This action on the part of Hawaii will doubtless lead to unfriendly comment on tho Dole government.

c- p.yj y EVENING BULLETIN, JUNE 1, 1895. "TpfPHRPV v I' -1 r r J A- M S Euet)ir;$ Bulletin, luitiictl ery Aftattmon Uxcrpt Sunday, from GOD King Slrri-t. J. T. STACKER, EDITOR. SATURDAY, JUNE 1, 1895. In the United States Memorial Day is one of the few national holi days. Veterans of the war arc not respected to work, particularly if they happen to have Government employment. The offices, federal and municipal, aro closed up and the men given a genuine holiday. Under ordinary circumstances the aamo condition would exist in a community that is believed to bo thoroughly imbued with American ideas and who love American insti tutions because they aro American. We say the same conditions should exist, but it is apparent that in Honolulu they do not judging from the fact that a man who had berved with distinction in a Northern Cavalry regiment during tho war, and, who lias supported tho Ha waiian Government and in return has been supported hy it, feeling the fires of patriotism kindling in his breast wanted to spend memo rial day in the ranks with his old comrades. As tho day was a holi day in so far as general business was concerned, he felt that ho could take it hero tho same as if ho was in tho United States bc causo tho people aro so American. But yesterday his dream of free dom and all that sort of thing was knocked into smithereens on finding the head of tho department in which he is employed had carefully deducted one day's pay from his wages. May we ask whero Ameri canism begins and absolutism ends in Hawaii. Tho Independence of Hawaii is not a guarantee that now industries will be advanced; tho Bulletin has never stated that such is the caBe. Nor hns it implied that the changed conditions of the South is not similar to ours with annexa tion as a leading string. The Bul letin merely cited tho caso of tho South beforo and after tho war as a lesson for us to follow. Slave labor made tho south prosperous beforo the war and its abolition killed tho tho slave states for twenty years afterward. Tho war undoubtedly played its part in tho devastation but, had tho South developed be fore, tho industries which were brought to tho front subsequently, would it have- been necessary for the residents South of Mason Dixon's line to have undergone tho hardships and privations which followed. We should not compare Hawaii with tho Southern States because wo have not tho resources for development. Let those wo have be brought out and put on a paying basis beforo anihilating the only ono we have. What slave labor did for tho South coutract labor has done for Hawaii; abolish it beforo other industries havo been tried and wo will bo in tho identi cal position of the peoplo in tho South who had mado fortunes through the carrying on of what they considered tho only busi ness worthy of notice. Wo con lend, that with iron and coal, and a dozen other resources devel oped in the south prior to the re bellion, that section of tho United States would not havo suffered stagnation for years after its close. 'It was that persistont waiting; that incontrollablo desire to let woll enough alone beforo tho war that kept tho country back after slavery was killed. We fail to sec, then, why it would not be better for us to profit by the experience of tho south and add to tho pro ducts of tho islands bo as to have something to fall back upon when tho sugar industry, now our only support, is weakened, probably killed, through a discontinuance of contract labor.. Admitting that the tariff tinkers in the United States are not through with their duties and that tho laws there may be amended so that Hawaii would be a sufferer, would tho result be different, or any more serious than to kill it outright by putting us in a position whereby wo could not pro duco a crop owing to interference with our labor. Wo want no better lesson to fol low than the history of the south and the knowledge wo have of tho people there teaches us. A half a loaf a day with independence, for ten years, until wo could get our selves in a position for a full meal would bo better than to jump into a scheme which everyone here knows will kill tho country. m C. A. S. S. Warrimoo 20 miles south at .'5 p. in. Ft has been remarked by visitors that for variety of goods, quality and &tylo, the shops of Honolulu compare favorably with those in tho largest cities in tho United States. Theso remarks aro not strange to us because wo aro familiar with tho needs of the people, we know that their tastes are' tho same as other people, though they are to a uegr.eo isolated from the rest of tho world. But they aro a reading peoplo and they are apt scholars; they havo tho same amount of ability to copy the ideas of othors or create now ones as tho ladies of New York or Boston. To cater to tho tastes of the different peoplo hero requires tacb, ability and coin; in tho selection of goods, both as to design, quality and price, all of tho business qualifications of man aro brought into play. If wo did not exercise it in our corner of tho mercantile world how could wo offer all shades of genuine woolen goods, not shoddy, but woolen at fifty cents a yard, when every other dealer in Hono lulu sells the identical goods for seventy-five conts and a dollar. Nor do wo confine ourselves to a single shade wo have them in ondless va riety. The same may bo said of our stock of all-wool flannels. Whp ever heard of them going for less than fifty conts a yaru They bring that because they are worth it to any one who wants thorn, but wo lot them go to you at thirty-fivo conts a yard, or three yards for a dollar. You can't realize it but wo can prove it to you as easy as wo can show you tho largest and handsomest collec tion of white goods of overy description over shown in Honolulu. Tho goods aro hero and tho wearing qualities aro guaran teed; we aro ashamed to men tion tho prices out of consider ation of tho feelings of our rivals; they're low enough of that you may bo assured. A drivo in shoes interests every ono our stock includes all sorts and conditions for mon, women and children, and to go with tho shoos wo havo a wonderful collection of hosiery for ladies. Datod Honolulu, June 1, 1895. 15-Ct Business Talfes May 29, 1895. If tho business in any ono I line was controlled by ono in i dividual, what would be tho i result? If there was a demand for his wares ho would be richer than Croesus at tho end of a year and you would havo to pay through the nose for j what you bought of him. In tho United States competition has brought the price of neces sities down to a stage whero peoplo may havo them and not bo looked upon as extravagant. If you will look around among our stock you will find that it is mado up largely of articles for which ynu have every day use. AVe havo luxuries as well. but, to-day wo loll you of things needful about tho house. Agato waro for instance! There's been n scarcity iu Coffee Biggins In town, but wo havo n stock of them That will interest everyone. We get our goods in agate ware from La Lance and Oros jean, the makers, and they havo tho reputation of making tho best goods in their particular lines in tho United States. Wo can get "seconds" from them, but tho first quality is tho best because tho enamel will not chip off. Wnter coolors, hnudsouiely painted, out side And enamel lined inside, Small ones for n family or largo Ones for n foundry. Japanned ware includes cake tins, trays, crumb pans, cuspi dors and lots of other things. Tho prettiest and probably the most useful article in the lot is a toilet stand, very neat as to decorations aud complete as to detail in tho matter of articles that go with them. The one Hint will striko your fancy Has a wntor tank that will Hold sufficient wator for tho day. The prico of these articles is not in proportion to the value of the goods. You get more for your money than you are used to, but then competition has fixed that in the United States wo buy cheap and fol low tho samo rulo Reselling, you understand the Golden Rulo. Itetinucd Glue Pot and Slop Bowls Are n new thine with us: Bright nud pretty, like it silver dollar. And you can got them at a price that will amaze you. You should havo one of these because they aro useful and serviceable. This is a fish-eating com munity because tho hsh aro fresh and of an exquisite flavor. These fish kottles vary in size from tho mullet to tho ulna, and tho price goes ac cording to tho size. Farmors' Boilers aro not used in every household, but there is scarcely a plantation on the islands but what re quires one; thoy are not to bo found in overy store in tho city, but wo havo a few of them to accommodate the peo plo who want them. Among other useful articles lot us call your attention to agato and tin basting spoons, tea and coffee caddies, egg poachers, chopping bowls, dish pans, dairy pans and wooden potato slicors. Paul Neumann, although suffer ing from a severe cold and hoarse ness which might have entitled him to tho consideration of tho Court had ho asked it, at once com menced his closing address, He somewhat astonished the counsel on tho other side by stating that after listening carefully to their learned disquisitions on military commissions and so forth he con ceded everything they had ad vanced, except that the deductions drawn by them from the authori ties cited had no adaptability to the caso in point. At the timo tho reporter left Mr. Neumann was arguing on tho point as to whether any necessity existed for the trials of misprision of treason before any military commission and did the state of affairs existing at the time require such a course of procedure. If it had not boon for tho ex cellent quality of coffee pro duced in Kona, it is not likely that foreigners would have been induced to invest their capital in lands in that district nor would the building of a telephone lino, such as the now company proposes to construct, have had an existence oven on paper. It's tho fact that the locality produced in a small way and in the most primitive manner an article which caught tho faucy of "canooz ers" in tho matter of coffeo thoy wanted more and they wero willing to pay a good price, but thero wore no means of getting it. Investigation demonstrated that the land would produce an unlimited quantity, but the peoplo in the vicinity had not given tho pro per attention to tho cultiva tion, you all know tho result, foreign capital camo in and is coming every day, and before another decade the production of coffeo will bo a leading in dustry of tho islands and the machiucry used in pulping, cleaning and putting it through tho various processes necessary to make it marketable will come through us. Nahnolelua and others vs. Kaaahu and others, a bill for parti tion of real estate. In this caso the court rules that parol evidence is admissible to identify and locate the land described in a deed, but not to extend the operation of the deed to land not embraced in its descriptive words. Merc failuro on tho part of the owner of land to object to its possession and im provement by others, docs not estop him from claiming tho land, his title being of record and he having done nothing to induce a belief that he had no title. The act of an agent does not estop his principal unless done within the scope of his authority. The decree of tho Circuit Court is affirmed. Tho second cac decided is that of Talula L. IIay.eldcn vs. Wa hineaca, also involving the posses sed of real estate. The point de cided is that where a device of a "half lot" of a piece of land to each of two persons and it is uncertain which half lot was intended for ono and which for the other, they aro tenants in common of the whole piece. After reviewing the caso at length tho Court reverses tho ver dict and judgment given in the lower court and orders judgment for the plaintiff. m Poor Digestion Leads to nervouaneps, fret fulness, peevishness, chronic Dyspepsia ana great misery. Seven Pounds in One "Week Not every man who is thin would thank you for fattening him. He doesn't want to bo fat and for every good reasons. Unnecessary fat is a load to carry about; it interferes with a man's power to work, short ens his wind, and dulls his wits. Yet, on the other hand, a certain amount of flesh is needed for health and comfort. For example: A man five feet high should weigh I about 1201bs.; and man five feet i six inches, 1451bs.; a man six feet, I 178 lbs. It is a regular accnding I scale. The insuranco companies allow a variation of 7 percent above i or below it, and beyond those limits j charge an extra premium. One i shouldn't bo much over or under his proper weight if ho wants to bo sound and hearty and we all do want that. Now wo will tell you how Mr. Thomas Crosby, being under weight, gained seven pounds in a week, lie had lost 1-J stone, which is too much off for a man who was never fleshier than ho naturally ought to be. It was this way. He was right enough up to May, 1891. At that time ho began to feel ill and out of sorts. He had a nasty tasto in his mouth like rotten eggs, he says and a thick, slimy stuff came on his gums and teeth. His appetite failed, and what ho did eat was, as you might say under compulsion; and right afterwards ho would have great pain in his stomach and chest. Plainly, something was amiss with him in that region. Ho was ottcn tuzzy, and com clnlls ran over him as though ho weie threat ened with fever. Of course wo should expect a man who is handled in this way to lose strength. Mr. Crosby lost strength. In fact, he he got so weak and nervous that he shook all over, and his hands trem bled as if a current of electricity were running through him. To use his own word: "I rapidly lost flesh, was 1-J stono lighter, and could hardly walk about. Once my parents thought I was dying, and sent in haste for the doctor. I saw two doctors in Epworth and one at Haxey, but they were- not ablo to help me. Our vicar, Rev. Mr. Overton, recommended me to the Lincoln Infirmary, where I at tended for eight weeks as an out door patient, without benefit. "Soon afterwards Mr. Sharp, a chemist, at Epworth, spoke to me of the virtues of a medicine known as Mother Siegel's Curativo Syrup. Being interested in what he said, I left off trying other things and be gan taking this Syrup. In a few days I felt better, and presently I gained seven pounds in a week. At that rato I soon got back to my work, and have had tho best of health ever since. I tell these facts to everybody, and am perfectly willing they should bo published. Yours truly (Signed), Tom Ciiosiiy, Ferry Road, Epworth, via Don caster, December 23rd, 1892." After reading Mr. Crosby's story wo scarcely need to ask why ho lost flesh. Tho minute ho stopped eat ing and digesting his usual allow ance of food ho began to fall away. Trees, they say, grow aB much from tho air by means of their leaves, as they do from tho soil. But men don't. They've got to bo built up through their stomachs. Indiges tion and dypepsia (Mr. Crosby's complaint) stops this process and poisons those who have it, besides. That accounts for all tho painful and dangerous symptoms our friend speakB of. Tho doctors do what they can, but, unluckily, they don't possess the medicine that goes to tho bottom of this discaso and cures it. The remedy is Mother Seigol's Curativo Syrup, and nothing else, so far as we know, it restores digestion, and digestion covers tho bones with fat enough for health and good looks. Rand Concert.
