The City in the Hands of a Mob of Roughs. THE AUTHORITIES POWEBLESS. Chinese Houses Attacked and the Inmates Badly Injured. ISrBCIAL BT TBLieILAFH TO TBI SXOOBS-VinOH. Denvkb(Col.), October 31st.— Denver has been in the hands of a mob for eight hours, and there are now fully 1,500 rioters in the streets. The trouble has been growing for days. It was discovered a week ago that there were fully 8,000 illegal names regis tered in this city, and immediately after wards the streets were filled with strangers of the worst character. Ever since the pub lication of the forged Garfield letter violent partisans have striven to make an issue of the Chinese question, and the Democratic press has been filled with articles assenting that as soon as Garfield was elected the State would be flooded with Chinese, and all white labor driven out. Saturday night the Demo crats had a procession, carrying transparen cies with inscription* and cartoons tending to excite animosity against the Chinese. A considerable portion became intoxicated, and remained out all night. This noon they made an ASSAULT OV THE CHINESE HOUSES, Tearing down the buildings and driving out the Chinese. One was dragged from Hop Lee's place with a rope about his neck and his skull crushed in with boots and bricks. The police were called out, but were unable to control the mob. The Fire Department was. ordered to throw water on the rioters, but the mob attacked them and badly wounded two firemen. Many Chinamen were fatally beaten, and one was rescued by the police and taken to jail, which was im mediately surrounded by a mob of about 1,000, who hurrahed for Hancock and yelled, "Lynch the leper." Special police managed to keep back the crowds. The other mob remained intact in the lower part of the city. About dark they were ENIIBEXT BEYOND CONTBOL, And marched from street to street, gut ting the China houses wherever they saw them, and assaulting citizens. On Lawrence street, from an isolated tene ment, a Chinaman was seen dragged, his ears cut off and otherwise terribly mutilated. He was finally rescued in a dying condition, placed in a carriage and driven towards the city jail. At Sixteenth street an unsuccess ful effort was mad* to drag him from the wagon. Several are reported killed, but the condition of the streets is such that it is im possible at this hour to get a definite report. Many colored men were knocked down and beaten. At this hour the rioters are STILL OH THE STBHET9 IN,rDIL i FOBC'E. j Special police have been sworn in ■to the number of 300. There is iTgreat^deal of in cendiarism to-night, and the Fire Depart ment I has been called ■to |be ready at i the slightest warning. Keports of pistols are heard all over I town, and militia will be called out. Threats 5 have been f freely made that the Tribune office would Sbe sacked, but though the Jfmobji, have been howling across the street from ;it no attack has been made yet. Citizens, irrespective cf pirt7, |l»re^intenßelyJindignant. t S;?iThe transparencies carried in the Democratic pro cession Saturday night were directed ;to the Chinese, and this, with a constant repetition of the GarSeld forgery are the causes of the riot. There is a dangerous night ahead. The Chinese population here cannot exceed 150, all told, and from the beginning of this dis graceful riot not a single incident is j reported of anyone of them having resisted the on slaught. I {SECOND is DlSPATckji^^^S [SECOND DISPATCH.] Desvkb, October Slat— At this time (11:30) everything is quiet, the mob having dispersed but a large police force is patrol in& the streets, and the militia are ready for action at a moment's notice. The report of the Chinaman having his ears cut off is a mis take, but several had their cues cut off. All the saloons are closed, with orders to remain so until after the election. The riot ers gutted every China house In town with two or three exceptions. One Chinaman was hung over his front door, and several badly beaten and wounded with stones and other missiles. In nearly every instance police men rescued the Chinamen through the back door while the mob were forcing the front door. Four or five rioters were slightly wounded, one seriously, being shot in the right side. [THIRD DISPATCH.] Nw Yobk, November Ist— a. m.— The Heral'Vs Denver special says The mob is immense in proportion, and at 1 o'clock to night is going through the streets visiting all the Chinese houses and gutting them. An extra force of police and Deputy Sheriffs, numbering quite 2,000, have been sworn in, and have once fired with blank cart ridges into the mob. The last report is that one Chinaman, far up town, was killed outright. Many persons have been knocked down. There are thousands of peo ple on the street^ and the air is full of cries, "The Chinese must go," and "Hurrah for Hancock." Intense excitement prevails, and there is great fear of the consequences. The mob is unorganized, and has developed no leader, which is one saving feature. The idea which baa prevailed that the j Kukhu were 'limply rough, lawless, irresponalbl* younz rowdioi b singularly absurd f reflection on the be»t" classes— tlieir'poiver and inherited author ity j over their poorer neighbors. The minority which forced an overwhelming majority into what the victlmi themselves termed the rich nan'i .'war' and the poor man's Bght/: is still omnipotent in the domain of Southern f public opinion. THE AUTHORITIES POWEBLISS. Chinese Houses Attacked and the Inmates Badly Injured. ISPSCIAL BT TBLKGRAPII TO THE RECORD-UNION Denver (Col.), October 31st.— Denver h-u been in the hands of a mob for eight hours, and there are now fully 1,500 rioters in the streets. The trouble has been growing for days. It was discovered a week ago that there were fully 8,000 illegal names regis tered in this city, and immediately after wards the streets were filled with strangers of the worst character. Ever since the pub lication of the forged Garfield letter violent partisans have striven to make an issue of the Chinese question, and the Democratic press has been filled with articles asserting that as soon as Garfield wu elected the State would be fljoded with Chinese, and all white labor driven out. Saturday night the Demo crats had a procession, carrying transparen cies with inscriptions and cartoons tending to excite animosity against the Chinese. A considerable portion became intoxicated, and remained o-': all night. This noon they made an ASSAULT ON THE CHINESE HOUSES, Tearing down the buildings and driving out the Chinese. One was dragged from Hop Lee's place with a rope about his neck and his skull crushed in with boots and bricks. The police were called out, but were unable to control the mob. The Fire Department was. ordered to throw water on the rioter 3, but the mob attacked them and badly wounded two firemen. Many Chilian -en were fatally beaten, and one was rescued by the police and taken to jail, which was im mediately surrounded by a mob of about 1,000, who hurrahed for Hancock and yelled, "Lynch the leper." Special police managed to keep back the crowds. The other mob remained intact in the lower part of the city. About dark they were ENTIRELY BEYOND CONTROL, And marched from street to street, gut ting the China houses wherever they saw them, and assaulting citizens. On Lawrence street, from an isolated tene ment, a Chinaman was seen dragged, his ears cut off and otherwise terribly mutilated. He was finally rescued in a dying condition, placed in a carriage and driven towards the city jail. At Sixteenth street an unsuccess ful effort wa3 made to drag him from the wagon. Several are reported killed, but the oondition of the streets is such that it is im possible at this hour to get a definite report. Many colored men were knocked down and beaten. At this hour the rioters are STILL ON THE STREETS IN FULL FORCE. Special police have been sworn in to the number of SCO. There is a great deal of in cendiarism to-night, and the Fire Depart ment has been called to be ready at the slightest warning. Reports of pistols are heard all over town, and the militia will be called out. Threats have been freely made that the Triliinr office would be sacked, but though the moh have been howling across the street from it no attack has been made as jet. Citizens, irrespective of psrty, are intensely indignant. The transparencies carried in the Democratic pro cession Saturday night were directed to the Chinese, ami this, with a constant repetition of the Gai-Seld forgery are the cause-; of the riot. There is a dangerous night ahead. The Chinese population here cannot exceed l.V>, all told, and from the beginning of this dis graceful riot not a single incident is reported of anyone of them having resisted the on slaught. fSECO.VD DfSPATCH.J Denver, October 31st.— At thi3 time (11:30) everything i* quiet, the mob having dispersed but a large police force ia patiol inj the streets, and the militia aro ready for action at a moment's notice. The report of the Chinaman having his ears cut off is a mis take, but several had their cues cut off. All the saloons are closed, with orders to remain so until after the election. The riot ers gutted every China house in town with two or three exceptions. One Chinaman was hung over hia front door, and several badly beaten and wounded with stones and other missiles. In nearly every instance police men rescued the Chinamen through the back door while the mob were forcing the front door. Four or five rioters were slightly wounded, one seriously, being shot in tho right side. [THIRD BISPATCn.I Nsw Yobk, November Ist— a. w.— The BtrahVn Denver special saya The mob h immense in proportion, and at 1 o'clock to night is going through the streets visiting all the Chinese house 3 and putting them. An e*tra force of police and Deputy Sheriff*, numbering quite 2,000, have been sworn iD, and have once fired with blank cart ridges into the mob. The last report is that one Chinaman, far up town, was killed outright. Many persona have been knocked down. There are thousands of peo ple on the streets, and the air ia full of cries, The Chinese must go," and "Hurrah for Hancock." Intense excitement prevails, and there is great fear of the consequences. The mob is unorganized, and has developed no leader, which is one saving feature. Tub idea which has prevailed that the Kuklux were simply rough, lawless, irresnou»iblß younz rowdies Is a singularly alj«urd reflection on the "best" classes— their'power and inherited author ity over their poorer neighbors. The minority which forced an overwhelming majority into what the victims themselves termed the rich man's war and the poor man's fight," is still omnipotent in the domain of Southern public opinion. If they had disapproved of the doings of these men, the Klan would have shriveled before the first breath of d« nunciatiou. [Judge Tourgee. No Mor.E Artificial Limbs.— Surgeon- General J. K. Barnes, U. S. A., issues a circular in which he says "The appro priation for supplying artificial limbs dur ing the year ending June ."10, 1881, ia now so far exhausted that no more orders, either for limbs in kind or for commuta tion, can be issued until further provision shall have been made by 'ongre«3. The small balance unexpended will be required to pay claims already approved." Yoi may depend upon it, sir, that, Yank or no Yank," if elected, the old boys of the South wi,l see that Hancock doe» tlia fair thing by them. In other words, he will run the machine to suit them, or they will ran the thing themselves. They aro not going to be played with any longer.- (Robert Toombs. Hammbr's Glyckrolk Tar. IDiarATCIIES OF SATCRDAV AXD BUSDAT.J ew Yoek, October SOlh.— There was an immense crowd of spectators at the examina tion of Philp this morning; At 11 o'clock Judge Davis ordered the doors cf the Court room closed. The police had great difficulty in preserving order, bo closely was the room packed. District Attorney Bell asked for additional time for the attendance of his witnesses from Washincton. Whereupon Howe, for the de fense, said "In order that no time may be lost, we ask you to allow in to call to the stand three wituesses from Washington. These gentlemen are George Weddesburn, Mayor Hallett and Mr. Wilson, by whom it is expected to prove the genuineness of the letter from examinations they have made with documents written by General Gr&rfield on file in Washington." Mr. Bell objected, saying counsel would hive plenty of time during the day to exam ine them. Mr. Howe— With that I am sati.-fied. Daniel T. Ames, an expert, recalled by the prosecution, testified: I have examined the Morey euvelope with exhibits A to :K, and the handwriting is similar. It does not resemble exhibits 1 aud 2 (Rockwell aud Jewell's letter*). The handwriting on the Morey euvtlope is the work of the same man who wrote exhibits marked A to K. Cross examined— l know George Simpson, Jr. Ido not regard him as an expert. Hb U eimply a copyist. I was editor of the Penman'/ Art Journal in May, 1877. Mr. Howe showed witness a copy of the Journal, i;i which Mr. Simpson was spoken of as a well-known roundhand writer ai»d piofes sional expeit." Q.— D:d-you write that article? A.— l dju't recollect. Q. Well, what is your opinion of him now as an expert? A. I won't express an opinion. Q Come, Mr. 'Ames; we have no false delicacy? A. I decline to answer. Howe you may g>. [Laughter.] Bell then asked the indulgence of the Court for a few miuute?, sajiaif his associate counsel, with a witness from Washicgton, were expected every moment. A rOSTAL CLERK'S TE3TIMOSY. W. A. Chau3er testified I have been can cel clerk in the Wa&hington Postcfiice all this year. The cancel btamp on the Morey letter has not been used in our office this year. The staui[. used was a combination stamp, marking the pontage stamp and giving the data at the Bame time. The stamp in the M'^rey letter is made, I should. think, by a steel stamp. I am not able to say if tie atiixed offico cancellation tstaiup on tiie poet age stamp on tha envelope was no; osed ii. January last. It was first used about the middle of February. Witness produced the form of stamp used prior to i'ebruary. Con tinuing, he tentified (producing stamp used after lebruary)— The use of stamps was din continued ab.iut the 15th of February, and these were then put in u&e. Cross-examined Col. D. B. Ainger Post master at Wu-birgton. I have seen the state ment made by him ij the uewapapers recaut ly. He U niy superior. I don't know that he cau-:ed the statement to be published that the changes of stamps I have refeireil to were made April 13th. 1 never heard such a state ment.' Colonel D. B. Ainger testified I have Postmaster of the City of Washington piuee January 13th hv-t. I never si.v the M.rey envelnueV Canceling stamps ia the Post i.ffice have uot been the same since I wss ap pointed. Tho stamps in use now were riot in use January la^t. The) change was made in February. The stamp on the Morey letter was not iv use in the orh'cw in January last at least not on and after the 13th. Croß3- examined Know the business of my office, though it U impassible to know all the details. There is more important duty than a thorough knowledge of cauceliug stamps. One of our duties is to see that letters are properly receipted acd stamped. I do not know the precise date of the change of stamp. I did not roak£ the statement ihst the change of stamps were uot effected until the 13th of April. That statement was published. THE CANCELING STAMP. Redirect— That statement was not an ifli cial one. I saw the facsimile of the envelops in The Truth, and I thought I might have made an error. I examined the stamp on it, and then sent for my Assistant P and directed him to ascertain the exact time at which the stamps were changed, and it was in February. Then I weut to the man who made the stamp, and he informed me that he W£S paid on February 13:h, but that he had delivered the stamps some time before. The new stamps were put in use between the 15th and 19th of February. Examined by Brooks for defense 1 did not see Marshall Jewell befjre the publication of the statements until last night. I came to New York, not knowing I was subpenaed. I came because I was interested r.fficially in thU trial. I came to New York last night. District Attorney Bell then called Colonel Bliss to the stand. He testified I am the cnmplainant, and I selected the Rockwell let ter as comparison. I saw it on the morning of the 20:h. I saw the Jewell letter after. Tho Rockwell letter was sthcted, because it was desired to have one that could be photo graphed with the Jewell letter, and because it was also the nearest in date to the alleged M(-rey letter. Cross-examined I saw all the papers in the case, or nearly all. I saw the exhibits, but did not know that they were (stolen. I asked if it caiLe directly through the hands of Ljuis J. Post, and I was informed it did not. S THE CASE TOB THE DEFEXBE. I Mr. Bell then stated that he rested the ea&e, reserving the priviUge, however, of calling as witnessf s expert Hoyl« and the Lynn Post master, with one of the clerks. Counsel Howe— May it please the Court, it is a matter of congratulation that the prose cution has terminated their co called case. We are deHghttd to have an opportunity to prove the innocence of Mr. Fhilp, and iuci dentally, of course, in bthnlf .of j the news paper called Truth. This defense will sub s'antiate the letter as published, and prove the genuineuess if James A. Garfield's signa ture. While we have the right to ask your honor to dismiss the case on the testimony ad duced, we feel we have a higher duty than that. I desire to state on behalf of Mr. Hart and Mr. Philp, that Rogers' examina tion in this case has been a fair one. We propose to prove that the letter and envelope were received by Mr. Hart, who will prove how and from where he received them, and until after the publication of the fac-simile, Mr. Philp never saw the letter. l We will prove Mr. Morey's existence. We will call his executors, and will call experts to dis prove the expert official testimony of the prosecution. We will produce gentlemen occupying hij?h positions, who will testify to the genuineness of Garfield's signature. We will also show beyond a doubt that the letter is not in the handwriting of Philp, but is a bona fide signature of the Republican Presi dential nominee. At the conclu-ion of Mr. Howe's speech applause M heard, and Judge D«vis ordered the officers 'to put those out wiiom they knew to have offended. I'HILP 13 ABSENT. The prosecution then called Philp, who was f abaent, and then Supervisor John A. Davenport, who, Mr. Bell announced, had left as pion an Mr. Howe began to speak.' S-' Mr. Bell was then called by the defense, ana testified that he had the original papers i on which f the warrant was hatted. The original manuscript of the article. Lying I and Sticking to It," was handed to him at the i rooms of the Republican National I Commit- tee. Conlda't Bay how it came there.' -l. Mr. Hout-hton being called, he said he was for the prosecution, Did n'.t know how the manuscript came from the Truth cfiicft.' Mr. Knox testified to the same effect, ex cept that Divenporthad it. ;.'-"i if; Judge Davis said he objected to a recess, as it might necessitate sitting on Sunday, but h« would eit until the clock truck 12 to-night, if couneel agreed. This was satisfsctory I all round, and recess was taken foe a few min utes for dinner. h r AJTTERSOOS BEBBION. V Judge D* vis again tok his seat on the I bench at 2 o'clock. Philp was present with I a lady, and attracted much attention..'' Some delay ensued after the opening of Conrt. Mr. Bell, for the prosecution, asked, as the delay was tot of their seeking, that he be permitted to call Joseph E '-Payne as a witness. The Court consented,^ acd Payne testified The ilurtv letter and envelope were in' the aause i r ,s7 s.'':'-.i--.c; handwriting as that of the iuanuscript of the editorial, "Lying and Stickjng to It," pub lished in Truth. The editorial, it is admit ted, was written by Philp. The defense called Andrew McLean. He testified I am manager of the Brooklyn Ea'jle, and have known Mr. Philp twelve years. I know his handwriting well, as dur ing these years he and I have been working i in the same office. I have seen him write almo.-t daily. I now see for the first time the oiiginal Morey letter and envelope, and from my knowledge of Mr. Philp's handwrit ing I have no doubt whatever but that it is not in the handwriting of Philp. He has not been in the habit of spelling companies in the way it is spelt here. I must have edited nearly 1,000 Columns of Mr. Pnilp's matter, and have never known him to spell such words in that way. I have been editor of the Eaijle for eight years, aad during that time James 2>lcDerniott was never on the paper. I know his reputation, and would not believe him under oath, if there waa any temptation for him to testify. James Gordon, a member of the Brooklyn Eayh's staff, and engaged with Philp iv com pilation of a dramatic work, testified I am positive the Morey letter is not in Mr. Philp's handwriting. I never knew Mr. Philp to spell the plural of words ending in"ies" "ys," us "companies" is spelled. James McDermott's character for veracity is not good. Frederick Churson, also of the Brooklyn Edijk, gives similar testimony. \V illiain S. Harvey, a graduate of Oxford University, England, and fourteen years the associate of Mr. Philp in editorial work, tes tified The Morty letter and euvelope are nut iv Philp'a handwrifang. I kuow James McDermott, and while I have been on the Earjlc 1 have not known him to be a reporter on it. I would believe him under oath if there was a half dollar one way, and weuld not believe him under oath if there was a dol lar the other. Several proof readers and the city editor cf the Bro"klyn Eauld. Judge Dittenhoffer advised them to do so, and the owner, Mr. Hurt, promised to publish edi torially on Wednesday the following Since the publication of General Gar field's explicit denial we are in doubt as to I the authenticity of the Morey letter." This was to be followed up by a full and complete re traction of the libel. mobey'3 motheh AGAIN. Chicago, October The Times' special from Boston regarding the Philp matter and the Morey letter, says James F, Babcock,' of this city, writes to an evening paper that the figures on the envelope which purports to have contained this now famnui epistle are scch figures as might naturally be made on any old scrap of paper, or have been inten tionally placed there by some person to give the envelope an appearance of as»e, probably the latter, as shown, says the writer, by the fact that they occur in several places where there have been erasures which they are in tended to conceal. A careful examination which I mr.do of the photograph of the en velope of the Morey letter shows a very r> markable resemblance between these figuri-s and those in the date of the letter. Betting ox Elections. —As persona) opinions of the result of the election which takes place to-morrow ara being nt unfre qnently reinforced by persons offering to substantiate the faith that is in them by "laying up treasures" in that direction, and ai the law on the subject of betting upon elections B?ems to be quite generally not un derstood, the following section of the Pennl C'>de may be of interest: "Section GO. Every person who make?, offer!", or accepts any bet or wager upon the result uf any elec tion, or upon the success or failure of any person or candidate, or upon the number of votes to he ca?t, either in the aK^resate or for any particular c-.ndidate, or upon the rote to bs c»st by acy person, is tuilty of a misdemeanor." It will be seen that violation of the statute against bettirg does n"t dis franchise persons from voting who iffer or accrpt a bet, but makes them iiabla to pun ishment for misdemeanor, which punishment is liy imprisonment in the County Jail not execeuinif Mx months, or by a lice not ex ceeding §500, or by both. San Fbakcisco, October 31st.— With over 10,000 men in line, parading before 100,000 spectators,' with a manifestation of enthusi asm that seemed boundless, the demonstra tion of last evening was one of the most re markable and noteworthy displays of the kind that the denizens of the Queen City of the Pacific ever witnessed. The parade it self was not oulv noteworthy on account of the number of persons who participated, but for the character of tho^e wno chese in that manner to manifest their regard for Repub lican principles. The procession itself was a shifting panorama, with patches of flame and color i-o well disposed and so harmonious that the whole effect was pleasaut and magnifi cent. The inarching was very much better than is usual to demonstrations of civilians the uniforms were neat and attractive, and the mut-ic was exceptionally good, .as every first-class band in the city, and bands from adjacent towns, were pressed into service. The frequent discharge of fire works aLo assisted in n.aking it more at tractive aud vaiied to the eye, and the en thusiastic chetrjDg of the paraders thrilled all with enthusiasm, and inspired every true Re puilican with a confidence iv the ultimate result of the election. It is needless to cay that the spectators were numberless, for the streets for hours were filled with a vast throng of humanity, while elegantly-attired ladies occupied the windows. Exactly at h&lf-past S o'clock the crder wa3 giveo to march, and the head of the column on I'o.st street moved northward up Kearny. At once a storm of cheers burot forth from sidewalk, from win dow, and from housetop. At the signal, a fUming rocket, with a whiz and a scream and a hiss, shot upward into the blue and burst into a fiery shower of violet, red and god. A mimic bombardment began between i the houses on eitl er side of the way, and fountains of flame and fiery rain poured in welcome from the windows, giving the pageant its baptism of fire. The vastuess of the columu may ha understood from the fact that, after cjunternihrchiag at the junction of Market and Valencia streets, the head of the column reached New Montgomery street, the point of review ar.d dismissal, while the rear divis ions were still debouching from Montgomery into Market street. Tivo hours and a quar ter were cou.-umed by the procesion in pass ing a givea point. In fact, the arrange ments were of the most perfect kind, ar.d every one seemed to know his place ar.d duty. The continued fusils.de of fireworks alou,' the line was ur apeakably magnificent. Interspersed at inteiraU'iu the line were volcanoes spouting unceasing fire aion. The whole line was ablaze with firework--, houses illuminated, cannons firing, etc. Ca>t^ovillb, October 31st— A large Re puhlicac meeting was addressed at Schmidt's HJI list evening by Hon. W. E. Allbd, former Union Pacific express agent at Sidney, on a charge of grand larceny, termi nated yesterday at Sidney in his acquittal. It will be remembered that some mouths ago 5122,000 in gold bullion and a small amount of currency, received from the Black Hilla en route East, disappeared from his office in midday, while he wag at dinner. It had been taken through a hole in the floor. After some considerable search it was found hid in a coal pile nnder the office, except one gold brick and currency amounting altogether to about $12,000. The evidence a»ainst Alien was very strong, but not strong enough to posi tively satisfy the jcry, who were out about eighteen honrs before comi.ig to an agree ment of not guilty. The parties who took the bullion and hid ij under the office in tended, no doubt, to come and get it at the first good opportunity. The Conulerfelt Bond*. Washington, October SOth. Upton, act ing Secretary of the Treasury, says there is no reason to suppose that any of those coun terfeit bonds or coupon* have been paid by the Treasurer, but that they are moat dan gerous counterfeits, and dealers in Govern ment securities should be on their guard. The IrlsU Land League. London. October 30th.— The announce ment that the Earl of Bessboroueh has joined the Land League is the most important news of the day iv the matters pertaining to Ire land. The managers of the company this morning denounce the report a3 infamously false, and say that it was started by unscrupulous politicians to affect local politics at Tuesday's election. Last night the Executive Committee of the Labor Union held a secret meeting and ordered 230 stand of arms, 10,000 rounds of ammunition, laid the city off into districts and made ar rangements to sound an alarm by the fire alarm system at any time the Chinamen shall arrive.
