In his able and masterly message to ikmgreae, wherein with a magnificent grasp of Intellectual vision every later eat and industry of our vast country is most graphically reviewed. President Ffarri-on gives a just recognition to our great agricultural interests and the work of the Department of Agriculture in rheir promotion Every request for in formation made to the Department by the farmers of the country ha* bad the most prompt attention, and every suggestion merited consideration. The scientific- «*orps of the De psrtmcor is of a high order and is pushing its investigations with method and enthusiasm The inspection by this department of cattle and pork products intended for shipment abroad ha- b^en the ba*U of the aui ee#« which ha* at tended '*tr effort to secure the removal of the restrictions maintained by th*1 European government* For ten years protest* and petitions upon this *ut ject from the packers and stock raiser* of the I cited fitates have been directed against j these restrictions which so seriously limited our market* and curtailed the profit- of the farm. “It is a source of general congratulation that success ha* I at last been attained for the effects of an enlarged foreign market for these meats will be felt not only by farmer* but In our public dnances and in every branch of trade. It Is particularly fortunate that the increased demand for food products resulting from the removal of the restrictions on our meat# and from reciprocal trade arrangement# to which I have referred, should have come at a time when the agricultural surplus is 10 large. Without the help thus derived, lower prices would have prevailed. The secretary of agriculture estimates that th restrictions upon the importation of our pork product* into Europe lost us a market for #20,000,000 worth of these product* annually." The grain crop of this year was the largest in our history..'*0 percent greater than that of last year, and yet the mar kets that have been opened and the larger demands resulting from abort crops in Europe have sustained prices to inch an extent that the enormous surplus of meats and breadstuff'* will be marketed at good prices bringing relief and pro# perity to an Industry that was much depressed. The value of the graiu crop of the l otted Htnte# i* estimated by the secre tary to be this year rive hundred million dollar* more than last; of meats one hun dred and fifty million# more and of all products of the farm, seven hundred mil lions more. “It i# not inappropriate, I think,” remark* President Harrison with that characteristic modesty so prominent in all hi# actions, “to suggest that our satisfaction in the contemplation of this marvelous addilionto our national wealth la unclouded by any suspicion of the currency by which it Is measured and in which the farmer is paid for the prod ucts of hi* field#.” A triumph of Repub lican legislation for which the country at large is to be congratulated, inasmuch as it re .elves the wonderful advantages flowing from it. Mr. Treby Johnson, cssbier of the Granite National Bank, yesterday showed s Jockral reporter one of the new silver certificates, probably one of the first to be issued in tbe State. Tbe note is a beauty. Mr. Johnson calls it one of the handsomest that he has ever seen. It is printed on the new distinctive paper, which bis two broad stripes of silk fibre run ning across the bill instead of the two threads running logitudiaally a9 for merly The back has been designed to show these stripes, having three irregular medal lions, the end ones having a large figure •*2M upon them, and the middle one bearing the same inscription that ia now on tbe back of these notes. Ths face of the note is especially notice able and shows plainly the work of an artist. In the center is a floe cut of the late William Windom, secretary of the treasury. T:.e lettering deserve! especial notice. The geometrical scroll work on both face and back i* equal to that of any note ever issued by the govern ment. Tbe notes are pmted and finished by a new method, and it is expected that they will wear better and last longer than tbe present ones. It is slso thought that they will be Jifiicu’tto counterfeit.
