Nearly every incoming vessel which reaches this port, reports having passed i some derelict tossing about the North At lentic. Tbe peculiarity of the reports lies in the fact that nearly every one of the wrecked veesels is reported as floating hot tom up. The cause that induces a craft which is built to float keel downward, to assn me the unnatoral attitude of pointing it to the skies as eoon as abandoned, is a point on which seafaring people widely differ. It is easy enough to comprehend how an abandoned and helpless vessel, drifting at the Mercy of wiod and wave, can be thrown on her beam end and aven entirely capsisvd when struck broadside on by an Atlantic wave. But why subsequent waves do not send them back to their normal floating position appears to be a vexed question. An old sea cspta'n, who is too modest to have his name mentioned, accounts for the persistency with which derelicts insist on floating aboat bottom up with the reason that the bosoms of vessels are always watertight. When suddenly capsized, he thinks thst a quantity of air is caught in the vessel’s hold, and. being confined in that space, has a tendency to kNp the craft in an inverted position. An eminent naval constructor, when questioned on tbe subject, explained that the phenomenon is caused by the vessel filling with water, and says that any shift ing cargo changes the centre of gravity of a vessel and affects its stability. Experi ence has proven this U*ue in colliers apd grain laden ships. Free water is said to be worse than either, and its influence on the stability of an abandonsd hulk, com bined with excesslxg roiling in the trough of the sea, is often sufficient to carry the derelict beyond the safe angle of keel. Once beyond that point, the constructor ■ays, it will never return. Ho Gats o Batter Jab. Stone, of the Bdwaids Company, received word yesterday from Fall Hirer that 20 expert weavers and familiee had started for this ci y. They will work for the cjropat-y. This means that our population will be increased by nearly 100 persons, all told. It means that just so much more trade will be given the local merchants. It alio proles the wisdom of bringing outside cor l orations to Augusta and encouraging them to develop* their plants Qalck Wviit Col. E. C. Farrington, who left the city Wednesday to secure the signature} of the witnesses at the heariog on the K ttery ac cident, has returned, having succeeded in gettiig the whole 13 names. Hie trip was qoite an interesting one, for in order to get them without loss of time, the men mostly being railroad men and running on the road, he had to make every mive tell He first got Conductor Lurl’s name Wednes Jay between Portland and Biddeford, then taking an early train from Biddeford to 8almon Falls and there getting a team to Conway Junction he found another mau io season to take the tirin to EJiot where another name was secure J Taking a team for Bullet’s crossing he got three more aid by following a farmer into Portsmouth was able to get bis signature just as the tx press from Portland reached there, which he took for Boston, where through the courtesy of Superintendent Perkins of the Eastern division of the Boet jv Maine R.R. he was able to obtain the remaining signa tures of train men who testified. The wit nesses who feel that the public regard the accident as the result of their carelessness, are anxiously awaiting the report of tbe railroad cnnmi-fi>ner*’verdict. Loos a Ltk* a Joke.
