The Inter.C'ollesiate Kac* at l.ake Quin'is mou (I, Tnar.day, Won by the ltnwd« i»i i tew—The B own (nive’Mtv Crew Defeated by Four Boat Length*. Worcester. Mass., July 16 The sturdy men from Maine in Bowdoin College rowed down their lighter opponents from Brown inihe int-r-collegiate boat race on Lake Qumsigamond this afternoon, beat ing them from the word go, and never being pressed to their best work. The start was ni«de nearlv at the time announced. Brown taking water first, but the pace of fifty to the minute was so quick that the men could not finish the stroke and they pulled very rag gedly, rocking their boat a great deal. Bowdoin’s heavier and better finished stroke sent their boat to the fore before more than a dozen strokes had been pulled, and from that time to the finish they had the race well in hand. Their stroke was closely watching the Brow n men and answering every spurt they made by one more effective, gradually increasing their lead to the finish. The boats started 200 feet apart and each kept its own water. Brown at the outset headed a little for the west shore and Bow doin for the easterly, but this departure from the straight course was only temporary and tor the first mile it would have been a liar 1 matter for any crew to keep its own water more successfully. At the end of the mile Bowdoin’s boat was taken well over to the east side and Brown followed, getting into Bowdoin*.* w ash and being obliged to pull out again toward the east shore to avoid the trouble it wa* making. Brown led away fifty strokes to a minute and never pulled less than forty-four, while Bowdoin starting with forty-eight, several limes droppt d to forty, the men apparently never exerting tin mselves after once getting clear w aier bctwt en them anti their oppo nent*, which wa* before a quarter of a mile had been coven t. The Mormons Liable to Incite a Biot at Salt Lake C ity at Any Time. Omaha, July 1G. General Howard, commanding the depart ment ..f the Platte, has returned to Omaha from Salt Lake City where lie spent the 4th of July. He says there is great apprehen sion in that place over the had feeling exist ing between the Gentiles and Mormons. The situation has assurmd grave proportions and been greatly intensified by the insults offered bv the Mormons to the national flag. The end is not yet and serious trouble may occur at any hour on the slightest pretext. The Gen tiles and United States soldiers are very in dignant. The bitterness of feeling is much greater than the public is aware of. as half has not been told in the published accounts. In an ticipation of an outbreak occuring at any day tin* war department has made preparations for it. Bv order of General Howard the troops that were to leave Fort Douglass and Fort Laramie f r Kansas to suppress the ('hey ennes.liave been retained at those posts A collision between Mormons and Gentiles is looked for on the 24th inst., as that is a great day with the Mormons, it being the an niversary of Utah. They come in by thous ands on that day to Salt Lake City from all 1 parts of the Territory to unite in the celebra tion. Should they attempt to repeat any such performance as they carried out on the fourth of July there w ill probably be blood shed. The Mormons in Salt Lake City are all armed. On the fourth of July they gave evidences of this by freely flourishing revol vers in ttic faces of the Gentiles, and defy ing and insulting them Backed by many thousands who will be in Salt Lake on the an niversary day, they no doubt will be inclined toLe more defiant and insulting than before and will incite and challenge a conflict. Two Cowboys Murdered by Indians— Excitement Among the ICed Men. Wichita, Kan., July 16. The Daily Eagle's special from the Chey enne agency say* a despatch was received from Fort Supply, announcing the arrival there of a courier who reports the finding of the bodies ot two cowboys on the V L range on the Cherokee Strip, who had been murdered and their bodies staked to the ground by the Indians Another despatch say s the horses ot the V. i L. and another branch have been seen among J the Indians in the last few days. Great excitement exists among the Indians about Fort Reno, the agency and cantonment who have been mysteriously informed of Un intended arrival of Gens. Sheridan and Miles. 1 he question to every white man who will talk lo them is whether the general means to disarm them. If the excitement 1 among them increases it will be impossible t hold any of them on the reservation. All the streams in the lerritory are sw imming full, which prevents the rapid movement of troops that are daily expected. The high water does not interfere w ith the Indians, howevt r. as one of their favorite pastimes is swimming itieir horses in rapid and swollen streams. Gens. Sheridan and Miles are ex pected hourly. There is talk of favor ing the policy of a commercial and financial alliance with Kngland, ami it is believed that London capitalists would like to secure con trol of the Central and National roads. It is reported that the Knglish government is not adverse to making a strong friend of Mexico, the policy being to build up the country and secure tin* gr wing trade now being diverted to the United States There is no doubt that Knglish manufac turers favor this plan. They think that by a hoi I move M* xico can be as strongly tied to Kngland as is Chili, and that the time is favorable for the development of an Anglo Mexican policy, as the government will soon have to go into the London money market to arrange a consolidation of the debt* of the country.
