He rapped upon the counting room door, after learning from the clerk licit ho applied for employm«llt. ••You w mli fi»r employ incut?'•' Mr. Mar tin asked, as the young man approached respectfully. •1 should, indeed, like to And something to do, for mothers ~-vke and the poor fellow had to Idle his lips Wt restrain the tears. ••Have you no father?-' No, sir; father died over two years (Continued on Fourth f’sge.y

From ti e Boston Journal. THE MAINE CAMPAIGN. JOSEPH L. SMITH. His Offer to Sacrifice the Entire Creed of the Greenback Party Last Winter if the Republicans would make Him Governor. COPIES OF HIS OWN MEMORANDA AND AGREEMENT. liANfiOR Ml'., Aug. t. lM7!t. A few days spent in Maine in special ex amination ot tlie present situation, partic ularly relating to old coalitions attempted and new ones perfected, enable me to present a chapter of political history that will have some interest for all parties in the Pine Tree State. After the election of last year in Maine it became evident that the republican Sen ate would have the power to determine ultimately who should be Governor of the State. The democrats and greenbaekers uniting their forces had a majority oi the House of Representative*, though the re publicans had a plurality. 1’nderthe Con stitution of Maine, when there is no choice of Governor by the people, it becomes the duty of the House to select two candidates front the four highest voted for, and send their names to the Senate, and from these two it is the imperative constitutional duty of the Senate to select the one who shall be Governor of the State. It became at once apparent w lien the election was well over anil there was tim*. to view the situation, that the democrats and greenbaekers would unite in the House and send the names ol Gnrcclnn and Smith to the Senate. The Senate is composed of 31 members and 20 of those were republi cans and the minority of 11 was divided between the democrats and greenbaekers. These twenty republican Senators were thus to have the duty devolved on them of selecting the Governor for the political year 1879. At once Joseph L. Smith began to court his old political associates. He was eager to assure them that he was still a republi can in heart—that lie differed slightly hut not at all irreconcilably from his old party on the financial question—hut that lie was still heartily with them on the Southern question, expressing great indignation at the bulldozing practices in the Southern States in the elections then just concluded. He was so eager to conciliate republicans and gain favor with the republican Senate that he procured an interview with a most trustworthy reporter of the Lewiston Journal, oue of the most careful, correct and painstaking papers in Maine. The editors of that paper vouch for the charac ter of the reporter who interviewed Mr. Smith, Mr. Thomas II. 15. Pierce of Dex ter, and Mr. Pierce vouches lor the truth of every word he quotes from Mr. Smith. Mr. I’ ierce is a democrat, having voted last year for Garcelon, and is credited this year with an intention ol voting for Smith. Mr. Pierce says with great confidence that Joseph L. Smith never lias made an au thentic denial of his remarks in the '•inter view," and never will. To show tin; extent to which Smith was w illing to go on the money question, I give part of the “interview.” The words must be read, not as the expression of#a sound financial faith in ull respects, but as indicating the readiness with w hich Smith would throw overboard his “Fiat” money creed if the republicans would agree to make him Governor. Here are some of the expressions used by Smith in the inter view “Do you think an increase of paper money necessary?” we asked. "I am of the opinion that the volume of currency has been contracted too fast." replied‘Mr. Smith. “More time should have been taken to bring it all about. It is with the government as with a man of business. He may have a large amount of debts outstanding nnd abundant means wherewith to pay, but if he makes imme diate payment he must sacrifice his prop erty by forced sales and ruin his business by applying everything to the payment ol his debts. Every business man realizes this. Hut now that we have realized all the disadvantages of contraction,” con tinued Mr. Smith, "now that our property has shrunk all it can shrink in value, f, for one, am not in favor of retracing our steps in order to endure all the misery over again. It has alt got to rotor to Hit HOLD value at last. If we now get nwag from it, when we hare just rearheil it, u'-e shall hare to eome hark- to it again sooner orlatir. I THIS K WE HAD BETTE It ETA 1.” “Then there is Jinl money,’’ said we, “an issue of Government stamps which nobody will redeem. IIow do vou regard that scheme?'* Mr. Smith replied that as a man with some property at stake, as well as the same general interest in the public welfare which all good citizens have, he was op posed to any scheme of a currency which eotihl not have a HOLD value eomewheri behind it. As soon as these words were published they created a stir in the State among all parties. The fiat greenbackers began to feel that they were cheated in their candi date the democrats began to fear that Smith would be taken up by the republi cans and their party thrown out in the cold, and the republicans began very nat urally to query whether they might not v/itb advantage take Smith for Governor rather than Garcelon—especially ns Gar celon was known to entertain in reality very unsound views on the financial ques tion. And thus all three parties were astir and on the qui vivc to see, Mieawber like, wlmt would “turn up.” Pretty soon the greenbackers, through Mr. Rust of Belfast, got another “inter view’’ from Smith, in which he qualified or toned down his Lewiston Journal inter view so as to partially reassure his green back supporters and relieve the democrats ot the apprehension of Smith going clean over to the republicans. Hut while the greenbackers were thus reassured of Mr. Smith's good faith to the party that voted for him. and the democrats were relieved of their fright at the thought ot the republicans capturing the green back candidate, the candidate himself was busy coaxing and caressing republicans to induce them to take him tor Governor in stead of Garcelon. He was compelled to publicly disavow or Smith’s manager. Rut somehow he failed to “manage," and left in utter disgust be fore the convention concluded jts work. The Penobscot tiare-up. however, was an exceptional incident in tile workine* of the campaign, though pos-ilih it mav prove contagious. a rule however, it will be found that the greenhaekers and democrats will unite in tin* election of Senator- and Representntives, and if they succeed in securing the legislature, .Jo seph 1,. Smith will be made Governor and run the State under democratic auspices for the use, behoof and benefit ot the democratic party. A democratic Senator, (Finn F. PilMiiin/J) is to be chosen to succeed Hannibal Hamlin, and there is to he firm union in support of the democrat ic candidate lor the Presidency in lHsu. The bargnin has been made, and Joseph L. Smith has found the democrats, as he did not find the republicans, ready to make him Governor. The only question remaining relates to the delivery of the voters. Can the honest greenbackers be yarded, herd ed, marked and delivered to the democracy just to gratify the ambition of Joseph L. Smith to be Governor id' Maine? (ami /.ion I'1, niltljuri/ to t>f Senator of tto Ciiited Statea?) I think not. The democratic greenbackers do not relish being traded back into the old par ty. and the republican greenbackers are as hostile to the democratic party as when they were outspoken republicans. In the attempt of the democrats to sell out their candidate and of the green back candidate to sell out his par ty it is very likely to happen that a good many who started with the intention of voting for Garcelon, and still more who started with the determination to vote for Smith, will end by voting for Daniel F. Davis!!! Xot/s Vi rrou*. .Mnjur Smith Interviewed. [From the Ilangor Commercial of Tuesday evening, the 4th inst.] A reporter of the Commercial went to Old town this morring and called upon Major Joseph I,. Smith, the Greenback candidate for (inventor, when the following interview took place Reporter—Mr. Smith. 1 presume you have seen the morning paper. Maj. Smith—No. sir. I have not. have been out of town and just returned. Any thing important in it? Hep.—Well. sir. you can read and sec for yourself (handing Mr. Smith a morning paper.) Maj. Smith—Why, sir. there is nothing to it. I never made any offers, directly or in directly, to anybody never assented to any bargain or t oniproniise. If they claim to have any writings from me they are forgeries. If they claim to have any details of any offers made by me looking to a trade or compro mise they are made from whole cloth. Hep —Then you say in advance of the pub lication of the “offers" made by you to sell out the Greenback party, that you never made any, anil never authorized any person to make any? Maj. Smith—I do, sir. llep.—Have von written any letter or let- tors to any Republican regarding your posi- i tion as a candidate? Maj. Smith—I wrote a letter to C. A. Bou telle, in reply to one from him inquiring how I stood regarding certain public questions. That letter Mr. Boutellc is at liberty to make public if he chooses, also the one he wrote j me in replv to mine to him. Rep.—Mid you not go to Mr. Bontclle's j office prior to the meeting of the Legislature, at his request, and there meet several prom-! ine.’.t Republicans, who made you certain propositions? Maj. Smith—No, Sir. I did meet Mr. Buf fum at the Penobscot Exchange Hotel in Ban- gar, at his request. He said to me, in sub-1 stance, Mr.Smith, vou can be the next Gover nor of Maine just, ns well as not. Only say the word. I am authorized to make this statement to you. I said. Mr. Hutium, I sup pose I know what your object is in getting me here If it is to make any trade or com promise in regard to the Governorship I have none to make and will lie a party to none. I stand squarely on the greenback platform, and shall not forsake toy principles nor sacri fice my party. Mr. Butfum exhibited to me some MSS. and read its contents. It was in regard to resumi tion and the Southern ques tions. He wanted me to agree to incorporate it iu my message to the Legislature—said if I would lie was authorized to say that I could la* thotiext Governor of Maine. 1 told him as. to the financial question I did not believe as he did, my party did not and the majority of the people did not. Hep.—Go you know who wrote the para graphs which Mr. Butfum wished incorpora ted in your address in your ease you were elected governor by the Senate Maj. Smith—I do not. I suppose it came from Mr. Blaine. Hep.—Gid you afterwards meet any repub lican, who claimed to be authorized by Mr. Blaine or anybody else to consult with you and to make any propositions to you regard ing the Governorship'!1 Major Smith—I was urged to meet Mr. Blaine in Boston, ami I paid no attention to the request. Mr. Buffum ngain requested nie to go to Augusta and meet members of the Hepublican State Committee. I did not rare to go. I was a greenbacker and if elected Governor it must be ns a greenbacker and nothing else. Major Smith added that he had preserved copies of his correspondence with Captain Bout* lie, and a copy of the writing which Mr. Budilin exhibited and wished incorpo rated in the message. Several gentlemen were waiting to consult w ith Major Smith, and the reporter thanked him for hi» kindness and withdrew. THAT NILVKR IM»|,LtH.
