AND His Christmas Production. (Continued from yea'erday.) “Before you go.” he said, “I would show you something. At the time your knock upon my door interrupted me 1 was engaged upon some lines addressed to the •Maid of VVoodville.’ Step to the table, and give me your opinion concerning them.” The visitor did as asked. “They are excellent—most excellent. And does not the poem imitate Byron’s ‘Maid ol Athens “It does. And to him,” said Simon, pointing to Byron’s poitrait, “do I owe my inspiration in this instauee." “But I trust I have not caused your thread of inspiration to become broken,” said Will iam Dent—“I mean bv my in terrupting you.” “Ah, not in the least. 1 have the faculty by which I can at any moment take up a poem where I lelt it. It was so with Shakespeare and Poe—though I am not exactly certain about Campbell or Longfellow. Milton, we are told, re quired days in which to perfect two lines, while Byron could dash off page alter page in rapid succession “And have vou been long engaged on the ‘Maid of Woodville,’ Mr.Penniworth?” Simon suddenly and uuexpectdly looked sad “Ah, no, Mr Dent,” and a sigh was drawn,—“1 have not been long engaged, nor am 1 engaged to her at all. But some time, by Heaven’s permission—” “You do not understand me,” William Dent interrupted. “I did not say en gaged to, but engaged on and I referred to your poem.” What could Simon Penniworth do after discovering this somewhat ludicrous blun der of his, but to throw aside for the mo ment his usual self-composure, and smile —yes, laugh slightly But hts features had assumed their natural expression when he said: “You will excuse me for my blunder, Mr. Dent.—But my poeui—you may hard ly think it; but when you came 'into my room I had beeu at work upon it scarcely an hour.” "No longer than that! Your power is indeed remarkable,” said William Dent. "Attribule what you have just read to Byron, not to me,” said Simon Penna worth with that willingness to give credit to others which is always a characteristic of true genius. "If there is auy praise bestow it upon him This noble action of Simon did not fail to becorao noted by William Dent, and his admiration of the gifted man grew stronger the more-he conversed with him and learned that, though with genius, this ■nan could make himself pleasing to one beneath him. They were both seated now, looking in to the tiro that crackled in the fire-place. “Doyou know.” said Simon at length, “that aeheerful fire like this always makes me think of a certain person P” "Of the maid of Woodville "Yes; of her. And I don’t know why it is, unless it may be because I could wish her near me at such limes.” "No doubt you tiave slated the reason.” “Mr. Dent, I tell this to you because I believe you to be my friend and will not divulge it, for it is rather a delicate mat ter: I am almost led to believe that I love ttiis girl.” William Dent waited a few minutes be fore he made reply to this confession of the man beside him. When he spoke, he said "And no doubt she is aware of this?" “1 cannot think otherwise. But, Mr. Dent, I am pained, and 1 know that you will lie pained for me, when I tell you that I leel I am not the only one who re gards her with affection." "A rival P” “Yes,—ah I presume it is the old sto rv—a story that Campbell 01 Shakespeare. Byron or Poe, might have told you. When I think that such as these have been thus tortured I try to be calm—but it is ofteu hard work, veiy." Simon's breast heaved with emotion, and it required much exertion to suppress a tear. "d'lie world seems very dark to me sometimes,” Simon continued, “very dark and could 1 not lose sight of the earth by becoming bound up as it were, iu my pro duction 1 contemplate what might follow with tear!” "But If it is suicide that you refer to," said William Dent, “think of the loss you would occasion to the world by a death so young.” “Y'es; and this, too, restrains me. I have a work to accomplish, and it must be completed.—But, Mr. Dent, do you think that the lady wo have just been referring to will receive the lines I have ad dressed to her with favor “1 do not see how she can do other wise 1 lmnk you. I trust that it will be so; ami that she will not tail to comprehend by ntv words the passion 1 bear to her. “But may I ask il sbe is very handsome as ot course she must be Is sbe light or dark “Not dark. History tells us that men of genius have always preferred light ladies to dark that poets in particular say that there is no such thing as a dark skinned beauty. Poe had no dark ladies among his acquaintances, while Byron loved none hut the light. Miltm, who was blind the latter portion of his life, could, by a certain sensitiveness, always tell when a dark lady entered the room where he was, anil ne would leave at once. Yes, the maid I have affection for is light, with tinely cut features, aod dark blue eyes, and lips as red as they are beautiful.” An old clock in the room struck the hour of noon very loudly as Simon com pleted this somewhat brief description of the girl he loved, and William Dent arose to go “1 have staid longer than 1 bad intend ed,” the latter said, “but your conversa |Continued on fourth psgt.

Gold and Greenbacks. At last the country lias reached the point it has been struggling (or. Green barks are worth their Lace in gold. Those who desire gold lor greenbacks can ex change dollar lor dollar. The premium upon gold has vauised, not again to be heard of by tills generation we hope and trust. The money in which the laborer receives his pay is just as good as that which the bondholder receives on his cou pons. It has been a long and hard strug gle to plaut our feet secuiely upon the soldid ground of specie payments, but the result is worth all that it cost. Though there are doubts expressed in some quarters about the ability ol the government to maintain resumption, the opiniumn in circles best inloruicd in re gard to financial matters is that resump tion will be a success. Confidence grows as January 1 t approaches. Everything is lavorablr—the large reserve of gold in the Treasury, the stale of our trade w ith foreign count ties, the products of our mines, the ailjustmei t of prici h ol com modules In specie, uiitl the sleutly unit in c leasing faith tlte people have in the ability ami ti meat purpose of the govern-' un til to redeem all ils promises to its creditorB. With the great mass ol people there will be no necessity anil no desire to exchange greenbacks for gold. The greenbacks are better lor iii-nily all busi ness purposes than gold. No man will loud his pockets or sale With gold when he can obtain paper as good as gold, light to carry, convenient to handle, anti easily deposited lor sale keeping. AM that we want is to know dial we can obtain a dol lar in gold lor a paper dollar il we wish in older to make us perfectly content with the paper. LETTISH FROM WASHINGTON. Washington, I>ec 17, 1878. Tim great event ol last week was ,Senator Blaine’* speech on ibe southern mode ol conduct ing elections. On the day his speech was deliv er* d your correspondent beard a prominent paliti- t cian, one whose opinion is entitled to high respect, say that it waa the greatest ctfoit of Mr. Blaine’s life. That is high eulogy. But the prevailing sentiment among those who heaid the speech was by no meaDs iu accord with this piaise. The re publicans missed the fierce invective whsmeuts which thiylound il extiemcly difficult to escape the first time. Ic would seem that a peril oLce aveited would have been piomptly and effectually provided against; but in this case what has beeu everybody's busi ness came very near being nobody's business. So jealous, however, are the democrats of a measure coming fiom the republicans, especially when it is fathered by Senator Edmunds, that many ate doubtful of tbe passage of the bill in the House. The House continues its strict attention to busi ness, and has sent to the Senate during the last week the Consular and Diplomatic, the Pension and the Navy appropriation bills, making five in all, and have assigned the Indian appropriation bill for to-day. The Senate will dispose of tbe Consular and Diplomatic and tbe Navy bills this week. A bill to supply the deficiency in tbe pos tal car service will be passed by the House before the recess. Tbe silver men are confident that they cau pass a bill lor the punishment of banks that disciimiuatc against the Bland dollar. The vote on Mr. Foil's resolution last week points to the conclusion that a bill of that natuie iu regular older will teceive the support of those who sup ported the silver bill. Tbe sense of the Senate on this questiou has not been taken, hut the bill would probably receive the same support there. Whether such a bill cau stand tbe test of law re mains to be seen. .Senator Beck's inquiry into tbe maimer in which Secretary Sberinau has treated the silve* received for customs, seems to indicate that »be epii it of partial repudiation is not dead. Secretary Sbcitnau's reply will probably be that justice required him to treat all creditors alike. Bui that answer will not satisfy the silver men. 1 hey want their dollar forced upon the people, ami they wdl not admit that there is any wioug in so doing; and it is very likely that they will agi tate to the end of the session, their power for evil being limited only by the lack of time. The questiou whether an attempt will be made at tbe next session to oust Senator Kellogg has been much discussed for want of something better to talk about. A great many think that his case »»ands on the same footing with Senator Butler’s Kellogg was admitted on the merits of the case and his title to s seit is as good ss that of any fceuator, hut Senator Butler was admitted on a pritna fad* case with the right of coulest given to Mr. Corbin. Stauley, thcCom niissioners of Fisheries in this Slate, have made their annual report to the Governor and Council, and we give an ahshact of the -ame. There has beeu continued prosperity in this dep ai« red by the inadequate appropria tion. The last lingering bold of the salmon of New England is now the two great river- of Maine, the Penobscot and Kennebec Tl-ey are fast dying out of the St. Croix and Deunt's nveis. The outrages attempted on the salmon in the Pe nobscot are well known. The dam built across the river at Treat's fall, about u mile above the city of Bangor, is nine hundred feet long, and has a gateway of but six feet. Is it any wonder the fi-b become frightened, while seeking a cm rent to guide them through this narrow p'ace A fence wa* built out into the river to intercept the cur rent from the fi-hway gate, to prevent the fish from finding it, and nets were stiur.g across the river below the dam. Could a better trap be in vented for faking cveiv salmon, shad ami alewive in the Penobscot river r We need a stringent law that there shall he no fishing of any kind what evei excepting with siugle baited book aud line or fly hook, between the Water Works dam at Tie at'9 Falls on the Penobscot river at Bangor, and the toll bridge, and a similar law for the Ken nebec river at Augusta. No fishing should be al lowed with hook and line withiu one huudredyards of any dam, aodthe former distance of five hun dred yards should be restored to the State law. The results of our salmon planting have been most satisfactory as exhibited on the Penobscot, Androscoggin, St. Croix and Medomac. tin the Penobscot the yield has been very large. Theie was a time early in the seasou when they reached the lemsikably low price of eight cents per pound. On the St. Croix the yield whs Isige for that liver. In 1873 the Commitsioneis transport ed 10.000 salmon fiy to Vaaceboro', which thev turned into the St. Croix at that place. In 1N74, 50.(XX) salmon ova were hatched for the Commis sioners in the hatching house of the Dohsis Club, and turned into the St. Croix tributaries. The inference is faiily deduced, that these contribu tions have materially ad ed to the stock of the river. Ou the Androscoggin, a good many sal moo have beeu taken the last two oi three year*. Numerous applications have been made for sal mon fry, but the Commissioners have beeu unable to ptocure them for the last three years, and it is recommended to the legi-latuie to authoiiz the taking yearly of a sufficient number of salmon eggs at the Bucksport works to put into the Pe nobscot, Kennebec, aud all such rivers of Marne as are furni-Ued with good and sufficient fishways, at least 200,000 salmon t y. The product of our lakes can be moic than quadrupled by careful and judicious slocking. The blue-back trout cannot be loo highlv rated as a food supply for other fish. At least half a million eggs of these should annually be turned into the waters of Mooschead lake and the land locked salmon introduced; as the lake has been fished in autumn ou the spawning beds, in wiuler through the ice, in spring aud at all times with hook and line and net and spear aud grapnel. There is u tish warden there, as no one dares to take the office aud fulfil its lequiiements. A desire is expieised to stock as many ai possi ble of our large inland lakes with the supeib pah known as the land locked sslmon of .Sehago lake. Prof. Baird has joined with the Commissioners in establishing works for taking the spawn of these fish, on Nougo river, Mr. Aikin» having charge of the same. The Commissioner* have distributed from (iiand Jake thi-* year, in different sections of our IS talc 100,000 fiy. Of these, 70.000 were a present fiom the United States' Commissioner, Prof. Baird, and were placed as follows: 40,000 were taken charge of by Cooledge Coffin, E>q., of Pembroke, to be hatched and distributed in the Penmaquau, and tributaries; 20,000 to Dr. In ni§ of Moultoi for til* watei* in that vicinity. and 10.000 to Mi Ned ol Vai-. putrhi-eof 30.000 was ma loin tb*‘ I >».!»-i.-s Club Those weir liaii'lud Itmk-poit urnlei the skillfull hand Allied .swa-cv, K-q., ami w to Odd nog pond, Kuril Id, and 5,000 to a p ud in Lincoln. 1 Ik ‘orami-sinners distrihuted Salmo OquotsA oi llliie-hsck'Irout, as follow-: 5,000 in Dexter poud, .5,000 in Woitlilv pond, Peru, 10.*hH) ini id pond, 10,000 in (’oliho-seeeontec pond, and 10.000 in Tboui)son’s poud, Oxloid There bus been a wide call for black ha--, and some foiiy ponds and stuamshave been su| plied. irootimied from tint pa«e.( tion has been so pleasing that I have not thought of the time. Please remember what I have made known to you, Mr. Penniworth, in behalf ol the people of Woodville. 1 "Most ceitainly; and I will endeavor to please them upon Christmas eve to the best of my ability.” And the caller left Simon alone again in bis study. As the reader has already learned, Simon Penniworth had been endowed with the (acuity of penning his productions with rapidity: so that, notwithstanding there was onlv a week before Christmas arrived, he did not at once commence up on the labor assigned to him. "I will hardly need more than a day" he said; "and, before I begin my work, I must see her.'' The "her" referred to the Maid of Woodville,” whose real name, it may be well to state here, was Mary Lyle. So the next day after Simon received his visit from William Dent, he lelt his house early in the alternoon to callup >n the one who occupied so prominent a place in his heatt's affection. It was a stormy day. and the snow was falling when he started; hut he did not mind this, lor lie lelt that he must see her, and inform her of the new honor that had been conferred u|m»i him. It was not a long way to the home ol Mary Lyle, and Simon quickly walked the distance bolding tip his head as he went through the streets with the proud con sciousness that many eyes were behold ing him, and many minds thinking of his power. Indeed, as he passed a certain place, he heard one bystander ob serve to another: "There goes Simon Penniworth. who is to give the Christmas poem at Washington Hall." How his heart fluttered at this! But scarcely more than it did when he had arrived at itie home of the one he loved, and rang the bell. Marv Lvle hersell rame lo llie floor. ••Why, Mr. Penniworth, is it you? I am happy To see you, though 1 hardly expect ed you io-d«v.” ••But I had something that I wished to tell you, and I could not wait," raid Simon, as he removed his hat nnd over coat in the hall. Then he was conducted into the elegant parlor (tor Mary's father was wealthy), where a bright tire was burning. “You know I «m always glad to see you Mi. Penniworth,’’ she said, as she drew her chair quite near to Simon's. “I trust so; and 1 hope that I am worthy ot your esteem.” He meant to have said love instead of esteem when he commenced the sentence, but it was difRcu't tor him to apeak that word or four letters in Mary Lyle’s pres ence. Then it might not have been prop er to have spoken it at that lime he after wards thought. "And you say you have something to tell me—will it interest me much “It is quite important to me, and 1 hope you will tie pleased to learn of my good fortune. Marv, the people of Woodville have appointed me their Christmas poet.” “Ah, hut this is no news to me," said the handsome Mary, with a laugh that Simon thought bewitching; “I was pres ent at the time the people chose you, ami threw my vote for you with the rest. And I fell proud of you, too, Mr. Penni worlh. “Did you really. MaryP” and, from gratitude, Simon's voice wes so choked with emotion that he could say no more, "Yes; and 1 was happy at your good fortune. But, do you think”—she spoke hesitatingly—“do you think they offer you quite enough for your labor, Mr. Penniworth “Enough, and more than enough,” said Simon, nnd his tones expressed firm ness—“more than 1 shall take, lor I labor with my pen merely to please the peo ple, which is the substance of what 1 re marked to a gentleman but yesterday. You could not have thought that I would accept money, Mary "I didn’t know but what you might— sometimes.” “I hope I shall never Pome to that! Taking pay lot pleusure is not right. But (lure was another thing lor which 1 wished to see you to-day, Mary—a very sei ious tiling.” Simon paused here, and looked at Mary, who suppressed a snnle at the men tion ot the “serious thing,” lot she im agined what was coming. And, reader, it will do no good to eon eeal ihe fact that Simon Penniworth now felt ihe lime to have arrived when he should ask for the hand ol Mary L\le. I "Now if ever,” he said to himself, j “She regards me with favor as one whom all Woodville appreciates, and no oppor tunity can ever lie belter than Ibis.” Simon's look was so lull ol meaning that Mary said “And what can it possibly be of a se rious nuluie that you have to tell me, Mr. Penniworth "It is concerning a mutter that has long been uppermost in my heart, Mary— an affair Hi which you play a prominent part." “1 play h prominent pint?" and she spoke the words w tli feigned surprise "Yes; and. delicate as the matter is, so di licete that 1 could not bring ruysell to speak of it in the past, I must disclose it now.
