Letter from Calitornla. Sax Francisco, Sep. 5th, 1878. The Celestial Evil. The prejudice of race io California seem* to be concentrated against the Chinaman. All other nationalities mo-r. heartily detest him, and jet at the same time as cordially a9 he is hated be rare* ly fails to tind employment, and, strange asit&ay appear, he gets work in the very families where hatred of him i» the most virulent. The fact ia bit services cannot be dispensed with, and if he it an evil, it is oue that must be tolerated at leaat for the preseut in spite of Kearney’s war cry that "the Chinese most go.” Coder the Burlingame treaty the Chinese have a r ght to come to our iboret, and, in the rights guaranteed to them, they should be protected even if they are ineligible to citizen* ship, it is not clear whether the abrogation of that treaty would prevent their immigration. Nor is it clear that Congress can exclude them, and al low other foreigners to come nere without let or hindrance. The Chinese came here like other foreigners because of the inducements offered, and they Will probably continue to come until these inducements no longer exist. There is no denying the fact that the Chi nese are industrious and can readily torn their hands to anything you may teach them. They will put up with anything you may aay to them in an ger, and never give a word back. When you meet a Celestial on the street he invariably gives you the largest half of the sidewalk. He is never known to mix up in your quarrel*, political, religions, so cial or otherwise. He never solicit* charity or a*ks you for a fa vor, hut invariably minds his own business and is perfectly willing to be let slone. If you are in debt to him he will dun you like a trooper until your indebtedness is paid, hut he will do it with a smile that is "childlike acd bland." Aud yet the Chinese in California are a curse to the State. Their customs, mode of life, deceit, dishonesty, everything connected with them or about them are a drawback to civilization, religion, morals and to the materiil prosperity of the State. I have seen enough of them to convince me that they aie worse than the frigs of Egypt. The encroachment of the Chinese upon whita labor can be no better illustrated tbau by taking the production of boots and shoes in this city aa a specimen. In five of the iaigest factories run by whites the yearly product is valued at about $1, 700,000. The total value of the product of the Chinese manufacturers is about $1,500,000. There are not less tt.au forty boot and shoe factories run by Celestial who give employment to some 5,000 of their countrymen, hundreds of them do their work iu squalid dins. Nearly one-half of the boot and shoe product of San Francisco is manu factured by Chinamen, and at the rate they are go ing on, they bid fair to monopolize the trade. The quality of their woik is greatly inferior to that of white labor. In this connection I will state as a singular fact that leather bought here and taken Fast by Massachusetts manufacturers comes back I here ia boots and shoes which are sold cheaper i than they can be manuf rclured even by John Chinaman. The secret of this is owing to the improved labor saving machinery employed by the Massachusetts Crispins which is not used out here to any extent. The Chinese monopolize the laun dry business, and constitute also one-half of the cigar manufacturers in this city, giving employ ment to some 4,000 of their nationality. San* Francisco Beooars. San Francisco is cursed with a system of mendi cancy peculiarly its own. There are almost a le gion of beggar*. They beset you on every hand. Nearly all are from the old world and they re mind the tourist of the beggars of Rome aud Na ples. Most of them are professionals, aud they not only make a good living by the impositions they practice, but some ot them are ou the road to wealth. One of the most noted of these im posters is a venerable mendicant who can be seen most any day at one ot the street corners on his bended knees. Ilia agonizing grimaces are well calculated to arrest the attention of passers-by whose bowels of corapas-ion are generally opened at once and they are led to give the rascal a piece of coin. lie wears a white suit, and holds up to your gaze a picture representing some awful cal amity which he tells you iu the most supplcating way was the cause of his misfortune. This beg gar is a fraud of the first water. It has transpired that be has accumulated a fortune by his imposi tions. When off duty it seems he dresses like a nabob, takes his family to the theatre, and has the best the market affords on his table. There are •cores of other beggars who live equally as well on their ill-gotten gaius. Laurel Hill Cimeteky. Jumping aboard a horse car a abort time since, In half an hour 1 reached Laurel Hill Cemetery. It is located in the outskirts of this city under the shadow of Lone Mountain. A few years ago this sacred aad hallowed spot was nothing bat a waste of sand, a3 barren aud desolate looking as one ever •aw. Now it is unsurpassed In its loveliness as a resting place tor the dead, and is a rival of Mount Auburn aud Greeuwocd at the East. It is com posed ot seventy-five acres, laid out in broad aven ues winding over undulating bills and through groves aud deJN. intersected by numerous Walks across emerald lawns. The grouuds are beauti fied with the rarest aud most fragrant of dow ers aud shrubs, auJ shaded with ambrosial aud umbrageous trees trausplauted from China, Ja pan, New Holland, Australia anti other foreign climes. The profusion of trees and plaats re mind the visitor of a tloral paiadise. Cypress, acacias, numerous vai ieties of the eucalyptii, yews, palms, yucca, magnolia, giaudidera, aloes, Mes pilus japouica, the Putosporum Zoo a a, Buvaria espinosa, arbor vita*, cryptomeuiajapooicas, lau rels, my i ties, weeping willows, paligodas, helio tropes, roses, fuchiaa, woodbines, all these and au iutiuite variety of other choice trees auu beauti ful speciineus of the dural kingdom can be found, many ol the latter tastefully and gracefully adorniug and entwining handsome and elaborate urns, vases anJ other memorial offerings. The places of sepulchre ar e numerous and many of the monuments and sarcophagi are very expen sive, some costing from £20,000 to £-50,000 each, and scores costing from So,000 to £10,000 each. These memorials have been fashioned by the ar tistic and cunning hand of the sculptor, ptinci pally from white and black marble, red, black and white granite, free stone and bind stone, and there are not n few of rare architectural beaaty [Concluded on fourth page

There are ti.irt mi representa tives on that s de of the House wla.se com fined majority amounts to just 13(1. One is chosen by one vole majority. A little more effort on the part of the republicans would have saved the House. “Dead on the Field of Honor.'* Every breath of air from the fever stricken and panic stricken South, seems surcharged with death. Business is susjicndud, ami towns that but yesterday wore busy with varied industries, are to-day as solitary tombs, the marts of business closed, amt the silence of the streets broken only by the rumbling of the undertaker's rude cart, as the bodies of the victims, unattended by mourning friends, are hurried to their last resting place. The conduct of the nohle women of the South during the scourge has been worthy of all commendation, excelling the courage of the men. The nurses who have gone from the North, taking their lives in their hands, have displayed a heroism that will shine forth con spicuously even when the most courageous exploits on bloody battle fields are narrated. Money not only furnishes the sinews of war, bat rightly applied will scud the bright winged angel of comfort on its glud ami mer ciful errand. And so the generous-hearted Northern people are responding to the cries of distress that cornc to them from their stricken brethren in the South. The spirit of giving, and the luxury of giving, lias {pen etrated nearly every village of N'cwr England. In this city several of our benevolent citizens have already responded, and an organized effort is to be made to procure still larger sums. Let all have an interest in the good work, and givo promptly and cordially, re membering that “the liberal soul shall lie made fkt.1’ Something really pathetic, which cannot attach to the telegraphic despatches which we publish from day to day, hovers about the exchanges from the yellowr lever cities, they show such signs of dire extremity. The Memphis Avalanche has, from the beginning, been reduced to a half-sheet. Even that limited Bpaec is largely taken up by old ad vertisements, for the business brings but little new to occupy the columns, und the working force is too small to fill them with n ws mat ter. The paper says: “With but throe printers we can give but a pittance of the world of lever news.” The latest receipt, Sunday's issue, has this chilling, des|iai>ing record: THE DEATH DAMP. IT CHOKES A CITT LIKE A DEAD MAN'S OKASP ON THE WRETCHED MURDERERS NECK. THE CLAMWT BREATH IS OROWINO MORE STIF LINO EVERT DAY. They mu«t die like sheep and ioi wheic they die, if something is not done that we ran advise or see any way of accomplish ing now. We are doomed; sorely, truly, unmistakably doomed. The cold shoulder has been tamed ou 1 many a friend during our night of distress- fn-if priservatiou ha* blotted out all other emotions. Another Plan. We understand that at a recent confet I ence of democrats, held to consult in re I gard to the present situation ol affairs, it j wa* determined to abandon Garcelon entirely and not send up his name to tb« Senate. One hundred and fitly voles 1 were thrown in the recent election for (Jen. 1*. Sea mil of Oidtown they weie thrown for a purpose; and it is now de* teriuined to entirt lv desert Garcelon, thus giving up the democratic organization entirely, and go over in a body for semi ing up the names of Smith and Sewa!'. liurrxli for Knox! Th** republicans elect the Sheriff and two County Commissioners in this county, while the greenbacks tike only the Sen tior and Treasurer, ami the democrats get nothing. We have chosen two intel ligent. prudent men for County Commis sioners, who will do wh.it they can to make ihe county tax lighter, as it needs to be. The Sheriff elect is the Sheriff by tiie Governor's appointment, and a capa ble and experienced officer. So far as this county is concerned the republicans are very well satisfied with the election.— [Rockland Free {‘rest. K. Moody Boynton, the Greenback ora tor who essayed the role of a Christian statesman before a Portland audience, in forming them that his first visit to the city was made as a delegate to a convention of the Young Men's Christian Association, was one ot the shining lights in the green back convention in Boston, Wednesday, where a proposition to invite a clergyman to invoke the divine blessing was received with shouts of derisive laughter. This same fellow, with nil his professions ol piety, indulged in the most horrible pro tani'y during his recent visit to Augusta. Fitting companion for Moses Hull and I,i-o Miller, the long-haired free-lovers. How will the sober minded, G id-tearing, family-1 iving people ot Maine like to fol low the lead of such men? Senator Blaine had a grand ovation on the occasion of bis recent visit to Ogdens* bmg. N. Y., where he gave an address on the Agricultural Grounds. The reporters of the New York papers say that ten thou sand people assembled to hear him. His speech was chiefly devoted to the subject ot finance and the bonds, and was received with great enthusiasm. A large number in the audience were Canadians, and to them Mr. Blaine addressed a portion of his remarks. Immediately at the close of his address, Mr. Blaine look the train tor the East, and arrived home on the Pullman irain, Saturday morning. Thu Belfast Age exp'aius Mr. Hale's defeat: “It was not so much,” it says, “an underestimate of Mr. Hale's public services with many which caused them to vote against him, but the sentiment that there should be rotation in office." “So near, and yet so far,” that is what rankles in the bosom of our Iriend of the Age— to think that be came so near being Mr. Hale’s successor, and yet missed the prize. Indeed he has reason to believe in “rota tion in office.’’ As a rule, the strength ol the greenback vote in Maine will be found in those sec tions most affected by the severe depres sion of the lumber business, that is. in the Penobscot valley and the eastern part of the State generally, and among the un informed in the rural districts, who had not obtained sufficient light upon the sub ject to act intelligently. The entire forgetfulness to all earthly concerns which the average gallery boy experiences in wit nessing one of the blood-aod-lhuodur, fire-and ruurder dramas of which Buffalo Bill and Texas Jack are the shining exponents, was attested by an incident which occurred an eveoiug or two ago at Ford's opera-house, in Baltimore, where Bin* falo Hill was performing. One of the pistols which was fired during the piece happened to be loa led with a ball cartridge, and the bullet struck a youth in the gallery, but the boy made no out cry and the accident was not made koowu until al.er the conclusion of the peiformaoce, when it wn di covered that the ball bad taken lodgment in t ie bo>'» chest, earning a wound which is con sidered seiious. Ex-Senator Boutwell has concluded the final re vision of the last proof sheets of the new Revis ed Statutes and the work will shortly be ready for distribation. An erroneous impression appears to prevail respecting the true chatactei of this hook. A dis pute arose between the rival beauties, springing out of the attentions paid to each in turn by a handsome young cavalrv officer quartered in the neighborhood. The quarrel ran «n high that one ol the Amazons at length despatch* ‘I her maid to the other with a formal challenge, which was instantly accepted. The bel ligerents met without seconds in a lonely pfa^e outside the town, each armed with a in ace of loaded pistols. Before, how ever. they had even taken up their re spectire positions, the trembling of one lady’s hand caused her pistol to explode prematurely, sending a bullet through the dress of the other, who shrieked and fell down in a swoon.
