It is proper lo allude lo one or two customs ot the place which may be con sidered to illustrate tbe "simplicity” ot tbe society, or the reverse. The rule in Washington is that all strangers pay visits iirst—a rule which, like most social rules, is observed with strictness by for eigners, and with considerable laxity by natives. Not only this, hut it is to a cer tain extent ife riijueur ior all the Washing ton magnates tu return visits (by leaving a card) ou alt persons, known or unknowu w ho call ou them. For instance, if the wile ot the smallest tradesman in Wash ington takes it into her head that she would like the acquaintance of the wife oi the Secretary ol Stale, all that is nec essary lor her to do is, after securing some passable costume, (dressing iu Washington need not be what it must beiu Fails or New York,) to present herself on the regular "day” at the Secretary's house. Shu will be admitted, will pay tier respects, and the next day she will have the satisfaction of having left at her own door by tbe official footman a card beating tbe official inscription, "The Sec retary of Slate. Now, this lends lo great complication rather than simplicity, and it it could be given up would make life lor the wives of high officials more endurable. An attempt was made during tlie lust Administration to break it up, but like one or two other more serious relorms undertaken at that time, the existence of such a custom teuds to make society al together loo easy of entrance, and to foist upon it giadually many characters whom, it left lo itself, it wouid not recognize. It exists nowhere hut iu Washington, and would not be tolerated tor a motueal auy where else. It is, ot course, regarded by everybody as very “democratic,’’ and so it is; but it must be coutessed that when democratic principles are carried so tar as to permit strangers lo force their ac quaintance upon people who do not care tor it, it is risking a great deal for politi cal consistency. The custom is like that tabled lo prevail along the western fron tier, which entitled auy member ol the community lo force a stranger lo drink with him or be shot. No such custom could prevuii in a society which aimed at being "exclusive,” and if a fault may be louud with society at Washington, it is that of not being exclusive euuugh.—At lantic Monthly. (Ol tills AND FULL AIK. The reader will allow me to recite the case ol a patient ol mine. A year ago, duiing liis noney-mooii, 1 congratulated loin, and told hiut that a dry cough with which he was troubled was curable, pro vided he took care to live in the opeu air as much as possible, inuring hiinselt to cold, sleeping iu well ventilated chambers, tree I rout dust, etc. But this advice was hardly relished by the youug pair. In Octoiler they hired rooms in a house that hail just been built; its "dampness” they remedied by keeping up tires steadily the windows were hardly ever opeued, as the house stood on a windy corner, and the 4" 'baud was growing more aud more sen sitive to cold lor this reason, too, be sel dom went out ol doors, lu November he took to the bed, was again about, but he gradually declined, to the last hoping to recover. llid'erent was the course followed by Mr. 11-, who, emaciated and troubled with a cough, (had a hemorrhage alter cou nseling a "severe cold. He went Into the country, look as much exercise as he could in the open air, and returned borne with only a slight cough. At home he every morning look a warm bath with el lusious of cold water, avoided rooms with bad air, etc. lu six months he was tree Irom his cuugh, appeared to be well nour ished, aud uo longer had any fear ol tak ing cold. Iflhe reader will dispassionately com pare these two cases, he will agree with me that the first patient, who uad never bad hemorrhage, tell a victim to the action ol loul air, while 11-used to say, "1 must give lu my diseased lungs, above all things, fresh air, as the prune necessary of lile.” Animals never lake cold, eveu in w inter; therefore among meu it must be u result ol wrong liabbs if air does any harm. We know that goid-tishes quickly perish w hen fresh air is not provided for them; and when we were boys we used to consider it cruelty to auimals if we made no opeuiugs for veulilatiou iu the boxes iu which we kept cockchafers.— From “Open Air and Health, in Popular Science Jbr Dec.
