A 1‘Ropntnc Vision, (,'onfetiritX Koada, OVich is in the State uv Kentucky,} Joon 22, 1872. I don’t know wat is the matter with me; but uv late I dream morn reglarly and more ieroshusly than 1 ever did immjlife. I he.v hed a sucoeshun nv nitemares ever since I gave in my adhesion to Greeley, some ur wich wnz stupenjusly fritefbl. 1 go to bed with Greeley on my mind, and dream dreams so horrible thatl awake with cold swets onto me, and shtnrln ez tho I hed the ague. Xite afore lA«t Gree ley appeared to me with hoofs, horns and a fail. He perched hisself on my stumirk, squattln like a hidjus toad, and puttin on bis spectacles, deliberately read me from an old copy of the Triboon, six yards uv his own editorials on the slavery question. He finally sailed off thro the air shrekin "Lost Lost!” Whether he referred to me or hisself ez "Lost,” 1 reely don’t know, l.f lie felt ez mean in my company ez I did in hizzen, the remark would embrace I both uv us. Last nite 1 had another iritelul vision. e Lev a family in the village wich don’t live in harmony. The husband got intoxi cated some years ngo, and knowin that it ish t, the gettin drnnk that hurts a man, but gettin sober, hez dodged that trouble by stayin drunk. His principal a moose nient is whallin his wife. The novelty of this hevin worn off, yesterday mornin he eave her a couple nv ounces of arsenic Vaulting ambishen o’erleajied herself— his excessive liberality defeated his pur pn=. The dose wuz too big—it sickened her—she vomited, and lived, and whaled him within an inch uv his life. I was at the house, and late in the eveDin left stoppin at Deekin Pogram’s where w# took a giuooine Kentucky tea, which cousiatad principally uv korn whisky aud eold tiled pork. From thence 1 went home and re tired, with my head full uv the piton, aud Greeley mixed in about eknl proposhens. Tallin asleep, I dreamed. Methawt I wuz in a bildin. where, I eoodenr make out. Stretched out onto a couch and kivered with a flag was the body uv an enormous giant—the most huge and comprehensive ciant I had ever seen, even in dreams. His legs wnz like pillars, his arms wnz like beams, and his bands was spread out like the map uv our wiuist happy but now opprest country. He seemed to be in the last stages nv a fearful sickness. He hed bin, in his dav, a giant uv immense strength, and wuz eveu in his illness ez handsome a human ez 1 ever sot eyes unto. But it waa evi dent that he wuz goin fast. He drawd his breath painfully, nnd from ugly wounds on his body blood oozed slowly but de pletsnlv. y\ Jio is tie 1 a«kcil uv the Goddes nv Liberty, which sot at hi* head in deep monrnin and weepin violontlv. “That is Rppublikinism."sTie answered, “the only actooai. ginuine friend I pver had—the only one who reply stood by me. But they are killin him. The gash in his back Chase gave him; that stab in the side wuz indicted by Randall; the itch wich so irritates him he caught from the Blairs, and—good Heaven here come* another squad uv his enemies'" I looked, and lo! Boss Tweed, Hoftmau, Seymour, Hendricks, and a dozen uv my pertikler friends werecomln in. They wore masks on their faces, made uv Noo York Triboons, but I knowd cm for all that. HotVman soezed the head uv the prostrate giant, while Tweed poured dowu his throat a nauseous flooid from a jug marked “Cincinnati,’-fairly fore in it down him. The victim shuddered ez he swallered it. ez thoit was his last and final shudder. “Yoo’ve killed him."' shrieked the God dess. “We hleeve we hev, madam," shouted the fellows in korns, pullin utf their masks “and you'll toiler hint within a veer." “Kill her now!” yelled one, who wuz evidently from Gregory, “she ain't got her champion to save her this time. And they seized her and gagged and bound hear, with friteful yells. And in their joy they cxeeooted a most demoniac war dance about the corpse, in wich 1 jinetl, with an ajility I didn't know I wuz possessed of. But jist ez our exulta tion wuz at its highest, the corpse gave a fearful gasp—a eonvtilshen uv ten hoss power, lie riz up from the couch, assoom etl a sittin position, his face uv a deethly p ilcness, and with a re i that shook the imildin, vomited « pizen enuff to kill our great enemy, going to be emeth wich will rid him uv the disturbin humors W'ich wuz destroyin uv him. and make

The death of the democratic patty In itecn consummated by the nomination ol Horace Greeley at Baltimore .a- the ilemo cratic candidate for President. There can be no other result from this strange pro cedure than the dissolution of the party, ft Isa forced, unnatural, inconsistent, il logical nomination, at war with common sense, degrading to political morality and decency, the trick of sharpers and black legs, made in subservience to the cry ol place hunters—“anybody to defeat Grant.’ It has been known for some time that this would be the issue at Baltimore. It is therefore no surprise to republicans, who are prepared to accept with confident cheerfulness the task of burying Mr. Gree ley so deep that, lie will have no resurrec tion-. The ardent Greeley democrats will of course have pictures ol “Uncle Horace’’ painted and hung up in their parlors, so that their children and friends may gaze upon the benevolent countenance of their candidate for President. We recommend its an addition that they ornament the pic ture, and render it more instructive, by covering the margin with a few of the many good things which “Uncle Horaee’Tias said about the democratic party, such as we print elsewhere in the Journal to-day. How proud every democrat must be of the eu logies passed upon his party by its candi date for President, and bow happy to show them to his friends! How splendidly the whole will illustrate the “anything to beat Grant'* delusion which has led the office seeking democrats to take Horace (irceley as the exponent of democracy CHARACTER OF THE DEMOCRA TIC PARTY AS PAINTED I! Y THE DEM UCRATIC CANDIDATE FOR PRESI DENT. The character of the democratic party is found sketched in the pages of the New York Tribune by Horace (ireeley. He having become the candidate of that party for President it is interesting to notiee what he thinks of his new found friends. No democrat can surely object to the por trait of his parly as drawn by its leading candidate. We mean by this no democrat that supports Horace (ireeley the thous ands that do uot support him and will not support him are not of course obliged to own the picture. If a democrat disowns Mr. (ireeley as his candidate and will not support him ot course he disowns what Mr. Greeley has said about the democratic party. But when a democrat supports Mr. Greeley he stands bound to accept what the (.'happaejuu candidate has said about his party. The first reason that such a democrat gives for sustaining 11. (i. is his belief in his immaculate honesty. Now if Mr. Greeley is honest, the following! things which he lias said about the demo-! eratic party must lie honest and true. If! they are not true where is the honesty j of the man that wrote them, Horace (iree ley Democrats are the Fathers of Southern Mulatto?*. All do know that there are several hundred thousand mulattnes in this country; and we presume no one lias any serious doubt that the father* of at least nine-tenths of them are white democrats. And we are told that these democrats, if they will have yellow children, might better than otherwise treat their moth era respectively as wives after the laudable pattern of that eminent democrat, Nice Pres ident liicJiard M. Johnson.— Horace Greeley. Democrat* ure pugilists, gum hlers or harlot*. N “Kvery one who choose* to live by pugil ism or gambling or harlotry, with m arly eve ry keeper of a tippling-house, is politically a democrat.”—Horace Greeley. Democrats Mil all the hsimil* ot debauchery. J*ofet wherever you please to an election district which you will pronounce morally rotten, given np In great part to debauchery and vice, whose voters subsist mainly by keeping policy offices, gambling houses, grog shops and darker dens of infamy, and that district will be found at nearly or quite every election giving a majority for that which styles itself the‘democraticparty.’ Take all the haunts of debauchery in the land, and you will find nine-tenths of their master spirits active partisans of that same democracy. What is the instinct, the sympathetic chord, which attaches them so uniformly to this par ty Will yon consider?—//■ race Greeley. Democrat* arc ignorant sots. Every youth who is learning to sip and soak in tile grog shops is being fashioned to the use of sham democracy. His virtuous parents may think otherwise—may be ignornnt of his haunts and his habits; but if he i« learning to love liquor and loose company be is being fashioned to the ends of the adversary, lienee the democratic managers and oracles almost uniformly hate and revile the temperance re form, even when personally temperate. They know that its triumph is their damage, and probably defeat. There is not a State in the Union whereof the democratic party is not conspicuously hostile to whatever legislation tends to diminish the number and power oi the grog shops. —Horace Greeleri. They are blacklegs, burglars, and keepers of dens of prosti lotion. “Wo thereupon a-kt'd our cotemporan to state frankly whether the pugilists, blacklegs, thieves, burglars, keepers of dens of prosti tution. etc., etc. were not almost unanimously democrats.”—Horace Greeley. Democratic Virtues. “To smoke is a democratic virtue to chew is that virtue intensified to drink rum is that virtue in the superlative.”—Horace Greeley. A rumor lias been circulated by the Greclcyitea that lion. S. D. Lindsey of Somerset is for Gteelcy, and his name lias been mentioned ns the candidate to be put in tbc field iieaiii-t Mr. lllaine. A private letter from Mr. Lindsey says: “No one lias authority to say that 1 am fot Greeley. I expect to vote for Grant. Some things in ids administration 1 should not ap prove, but with its great purpose and the great body of its supporters I have always been and am in hearty sympathy.'' So vanishes one of the Greeley lies. Ninety-nine one hundretlis of the claim made of prominent no n for Greeley liavr no better foundation than this. LETTER FROM MR. LA AG. To the Editor of the Javrual: At your request 1 answer the queries in the Journal of the nth inst. Some foot-prints arc unmistakable, even in the dark. Does the Journal writer assume that men, ouDide of his official ring, are trained to so low an estimate of their independence, that they can be forced to a continued support ot an Executive, right or wrong? (/very Is'. “Would lie have remained a firm supporter of Grant’s administration if he had received the desired office?” Amvtr. the otter of the office, to which you allude, was made me three years since. Had I then been as well informed a7fl. To Hon. J. \V. Porter, A. Smith, II. S. Osgnodand H. 1.. Mitchell, President and Secretaries of the State Republican Con vention Gentlemen:—Your letter of June fifth in forming me of my nomination for the office of Governor at the State Republican Convention held in Lewiston June 1:1th has been received. I accept the nomination with grateful ac knowledgment, (or the honor it confers. If elected, 1 shall, in the future, as in the past, devote my best and most earnest efforts to the interest of the State, and endeavor to merit the approval and confidence the con vention so generously expressed. In full accord with the platform of princi ples adopted by the convention, and believing the success of the Republican party essential to the highest prosperity of the State and Nation. 1 am, Very Respectfully, Your Obedient Servant, Sidnkv Pf.uiiam. pl a r ok p i y. That Greeley, and Brown will carry Maine in November, w.e are entirely confident; and if the Press, or its associates, feel the con fidence in a contrary result which they ex press, a friend at our elbow desires to make them a proposition, which is, to put a hun dred dollars against their hundred—the win ner to pay the hundred won to the Maine General Hospital; and he means business.— Argus. We believe licit betting is a verv coarse way to express conviction, hut we cannot let such an arrant piece of bounce and gascon ade piss without bringing it to a test a once. "A friend at our elbow" who is also a friend to the Maine General Hospital proposes to take that bet and suggests that iie would he pleased to have the sum made larger. In fact he proposes to take all the h.-ts which all the friends at all the Argus’ “dhows" may offer that Maine will give a majority for the Demo-Grccley ticket in No vember. We appoint two o’clock P. M. to day at the Press office as the time and place to meet the Argus’ “friends' to deposit the money. We will take the hundred or a thou sand or as many thousands as may be offered. 11 the time and place are not convenient he will call at the Argus office at any time it may assign to transact the business. The Argus asumes to slate that its “friend" "means business” so of course it will see that be comes to time.—Portland Presl. lion. 1 homas S. Lang, the great horseman, has come out in a lengthy letter, giving his adhesion to Greeley. Mr. Lang has had some political position in Kennebec County, having been elected to ttie Senate twice. His course is explained very readily. He is simply a disaffected man, having a grievance which lie lias complained of bitterly for some time, viz a failure to obtain the office of C'oUeetorof Internal Revenue for that Dis trict. He is bitter against Mr. lilaine, hut he is shorn of influence, as is every man who acts from selfish motives. His letter is not very convincing, and it is assorted confidently by those who know, that he will carry no one with him. It is fortu nate wo have no more revenue officers in the State to be disaffected on acount of loss of office, for it might make quite a serious mat ter. As it is, it is a question of simple arith metic, to ascertain the number of republicans who support Greeley, by finding out the num ber who cither lost an office, or failed to get one.—OrftuO Drhiocriit. 1‘OUTJCA/., The Portland Oregonian announces that one by one the Democratic papers ol that State are pronouncing against Greeley. It is now reported that Senator Trumbull has decided not to take an active part in the political campaign, having reconsidered a contrary determination since lie has mingled among his constituents and learned the weak ness of the Liberal cause. The Indianapolis Journal says: ‘•When ever a Republican paper announces that it has ceased or intends to cease being an or gan, we notice it begins to throw dirt at the Republican party and play into the hands ot the enemy.” Just to. Whenever a Republi can paper gets shaky the fact may he known by its sudden affectation of “independence.” The New York Times hits the Democratic nail square on the head when it says: “Mr. Greeley's nomination is simply the victory of the baser elements of the Democratic party over its better elements. He Is not selected to represent any Democratic principle, but to give places to Democratic politicians, im pelled to support him through greed of public plunder. In 1801*, the New York Republican State Convention, to show i s confidence in Mr. Greeley, and to gratify liis well known desire for a formal recognition by the representatives of the Republican party, gave him the nom ination of Comptroller. In accepting tiie nom ination he wrote a letter in which he referred to the “great army of office-seekers” whom President Grant’s inability to supply with places had converted into “sulky stay-at homes.” These he entreated to go to the polls and there work and vote simply for the con stitutional amendment securing impartial suffrage.” “They will,” he wrote, “thus proclaim that their personal disappointments have not affected their principles, and that their professions of Republicanism were not insincere.” Precisely: and the advice is equally good in the present crisis. Let it be followed, and its author's support for the Presidency will com- entirely from the Democratic party. Gov Vance of North Carolina is a pretty specimen of a Greeley many In a recent speech he showed the material of which he is composed by remarking he “would sooner be the meanest KfrKlux rotting in the Pen itentiary, than to be one of the prbsceutors or the judge who tried thpin." He further advised his Democratic friends that the best wav to succeed iu the coming elcetion was by kicking out the Republicans. GENERAL NEWS. A resolutions of thanks to tlu* officer* of the convention was adopted. \t 1 the convention ttJjuurued. The Anti-Greeley Convention. Baltimore, 1. The Anti-Greeley Demu j cratic Convention met at one o’clock. The I following gentlemen were numinrted by the j committee on permanent officers President, Samuel J. Bayard of New Jersey; Vice residents, K. V. Stokes of South Carolina. ,Ias. Sweeney of Pennsylvania, Hzra Keyser of Texas and Jesse Miller of W. Virginia; Secretaries, Jas. G. I'nderwood of C’onneeti cut and S. J. Chute of New York. The re i port was adopted. Mr. Bayard on taking tlu* chair said this convention was here to-day to resent the foul conspiracy formed some time ago lor the des truction of the democratic party, and which is now culminating at the Opera House. This convention represents the vast masses of democrats whose voice is not to be heard there. Those here present will continue to hold up the old flag, and if the conspirators throw it down wc will take it up, and bid de fiance to the outrage sought to be perpetrated. Political coalitions, as the president sought to show, never succeed. Coalitions arc founded and bargain and sale, and we cannot tell who the buyers and the takers are, but the taint will remain. When Greeley was nominated at Cincinnati a howl of contempt everywhere took place, combinations took place; paper after paper hoisted a signal of distress and went over to his support, and now we see the result in the proceedings at the Opera House in the nomination of Gree ley and Brown. The committee appointed yesterday, presented an address to tho democracy of the United States, in which they severely arraign t4e democratic party, saying they have abandoned the principles they heretofore cherished, and accept in their stead those that are altogether irreconcilable and conflicting. The convention here as sembled is not hound by the action of the Opera House Convention, which action should be spurned by all loyal democrats. The ad dress recommends the formation of demm ratio associations throughout the country, to stop the growing defection from the true demo cratic party, and that a call be issued for a national democratic convention to lie held at Louisville on the Gel of September nevt. The address was adopted. Mr. Jlcnily of N. i'.. said they should not make a nomination nt the present time, lie wanted a true democrat a« candidate for pres ident. V resolution was offered and adopted for the appointment of a committee to secure the attendance of delegates to a national conven tion at Louisville. A series of resolutions recommending cer iiin things to the national convention were laid on the table and tho convention ad journed. «ews Jr’rom New York.. Nt iv fork, 10. The l’ortland I’ress gives the follow ing ac count of a singular affair: Thesday after noon as James McCarthy, a young* man of lb, was sitting on the steps of iris mother’s house, mi Tore street, between Hampshire and India, the report of a pistol was heard, and simualtanoouidy tie received a bullet in the forehead, which indicted a severe wound, and came out through tlie scalp near the top of Ids head. Ho had been talking with hii mother, who sat in the window, only an in stant before. She heard hint trying to get into the house and went to his assistance. From tbo position in which he sat and the course of the bullet, it is evident that the •hot came from behind a fence directly in front of him. When ho took his cap off the ball fell out and was saved. It was appar ently a conical ball, considerably flattened out by contact with his head. Dr. French was called to attend him bat was unable to determine whether or not there was a frac ture of the skull. Tuesday night McCarthy was quite bright and cheerful. His friends assert that it was a deliberate act, but it does not seem reasonable, as McCarthy has been an invalid for four years, and almost in the last stages of consumption. Hon. Wm. P.
