Horal anti Sbtatt Krtos. Blueberries still bold out in some of the markets. Ninety-five moose hides were recently sent from But northern part of Aroostook county to Boston. They are worth about #12 each. The Early Rose has proved to be the most prolific potato raised in this vicinity the past year. I’rof. J. S. Sewall, of Bowdoin College, will preach at the South Parish church in llallo well next Sabbath. Our Mt. Desert correspondent has returned from hie wanderings, and liberally distributed his stock of fish nmonghis friends. The change in the weather is very agreeable and refreshing. On .Monday evening, the air was slightly suggestive of frost. Mr. Win. II. Vivian of this city, has sold his dwelling house on Sewall street, and will erect the next season a house for his own use oil the lot next south of the one sold.
Mr. 1.. 11. Holbrook of this city, whose son Charlie was recently drowned, has been pre sented with a large and correct photograph of his little boy, taken from a tin-type, and hand somely framed, a gift from the men in the rail road shop where Mr. Holbrook is employed. The extraordinary purses offered for trot ting horses by the managers of the State Fair, should be sufficient inducement to horsemen ali over the State to put their beasts in train ing. An extra prize for gentlemen’s driving horse should he especially noted. We have Berlin and l’aris to read about now. in place of Washington and Kiclunond. so familiar a few years ago. This is one of those cases where ‘‘distance lends enchant ment to the view.” Mr. George W. Carlotonof Brunswick, well known to the public ns a manufacturer of patent gum, has been afflicted recently w ith insanity, and it is thought that hi" friends will he compelled to hring him to the Insane Hos- j pital in this city. Business care and anxiety arc said to have been the cause of Mr. Carle ton's insanity. The Capital Guards, at their meeting on Tuesday evening, appeared in the tasty new uniforms manufactured in New York, and j wore inspected by Copt. Wyujan. ith the exception of two or three eases, the uniforms fitted completely and make a fine appearance. A street parade is contemplated. Our citizens would he glad to have the company show themselves w ith full ranks. By order of the most eminent and skillful surgeon, E. W. Stetson, the Cushnoc Fish- j ing Association of this city yesterday made j their tith annual excursion to Mouse Island, j Boothbay harbor. They left in the early train, taking the steamer from Bath to Booth bay, ami were to return last evening. *We trust that some of the enthusiastic fishermen will drop us a line. Officials connected with the L”. S. Coast Survey are now encamped ill Dresden. They occupy seventeen tents beautifully pitched upon a green slope leading down to the river. The situation is most eligible for any survey that may he contemplated. Person* coming up the river, noticing the neat encampment, would suppose it to be a company ot pleasure seekers. The raising of cabbages in this city the present year has been a miserable failure. The green worm has been unusually plenty and more voracious than ever before. If this pest continues, cabbage raising w ill have to he abandoned in the gardens ot this city. Many gardeners have already pulled up the stubs of the worm-eater plant upon which they have bestowed so much attention all summer. Elson is continuing his foolish walk between this city and Lewiston, with doubts as to his ability to complete the undertaking. It is a sad thing to chronicle that when at Lewiston on Tuesday he complained of being footsore, and said he would not promise to he there again on Wednesday. That is too had— future generations and ‘-unbohi millions’’ have an interest in the success of this great undertaking. A gentleman related to us the other day a eery curious but truthful circumstance, that occurred in the northern portion of this Slate. Two children, about three years of age, strayed without permission to a pond covered with ice that had not become sufficiently frozen to be deemed safe to go upon it. Both children were drowned and their bodies recov ered. A clergyman residing about twenty miles from the place of the accident, and be ing acquainted with the parents of the de ceased children, brought his own boy, six or seven years old, to the scene of the disaster, in the hope that it would have a salutary effect upon him, nnd warn him against a like ex posure to danger. The father left bis boy upon the edge of the pond with his eyes turned towards the place where the little ones had the day before met their fate, while lie should visit the house of the dead to comfort the afflicted ones. He had been in the house but a few minutes when the intelligence was brought to him that his son had ventured upon the ice, had broken through, and was drowned. The story is a sad one, but true to the letter. The “Towns end Marino Kailway,” at Bootlibay, so called because situated at tin extreme “jumping off place” of the town, ha» been in full operation only since the lGth o! June, and has already had drawn upun it! ways thirty-eight vessels. By those compe tent to judge, it is called one of the best rail ways in the State. The entire cost of tin structure was $14,000. This includes a stean engine of sixty horse power, modern machin cry for drawing up vessels, and an immens' cable chain which alone cost about $1800 Twenty cents per ton is the charge for takinj vessels out of the water, and a specified sun for the use of the ways each day spent in re pairing. From twelve to twenty workmen ar constantly employed at the yard at price ranging from $2..r>0 to $4.00 per day. A car pc liter's shop is now being erected, which wil add much to the convenience of the yar.. which is already well adapted to the specia work. Three vessels can be received at time upon the ways. Some arc hauled up for radical and important repairs, while others are launched alter a day or two spent in scrap ing and painting their bottoms. The railway wax constructed and is now under the super vision of Mr. Edward Luring, a master builder of long experience, formerly of I’rov incetown, Mass. It is owned by a stock com pany, of which C'apt. Cyrus MeKown of ISootli bay is President. The stock is divided into shares of $100 each. irprrial Xotirrs. The Order of the Hay. These Machines, by their simplicity, durability, and the great ig^.gc of work lliey t \ecute, have gained a rt putation truly enviable. The famous success of the Linger Mam factur im» Company has stimulated many other compan ies to pnl forth all their eii* rgies and t dent- to produt e a sewing machine that would lip-e or equal the Singer, but in every ea-e they have sig mdlv laded, a? is plainly shown by the tact, that of all the travelling agent-—•runnels or drummi is’’ —of other companies, none have the assurance to laim more than an equality with the Singer, even upon any special class of work. There are many sew ing machine?, now offered to the public, that have their good point*, and are of much assistance to the hoiiscwilc smd the industri* ous seam-tress. Newly improved machinery is em ployed turning out cadi part finished t«» that me chanical exactness, that every one is a perfect du plicate of the other in size, weight and finish. All new inventions are carefully examined and tested, and if approved, are adopted, regardless of ex pense. while the many impractical humbugs that are patented, are left to grace some new wonder and learn the purchaser when too late, that he has paid too dear for his whistle.” It should bo re membered that the .Singer Manufacturing Com pany has never made a poor Machine—from the verv first twenty-odd years ago They never huv editorial notices, or expend funds in “log-rolling” at Pairs to gain medals or premiums. They simply make their Machines as v aluable as monev and science can perfect them—place them hi their Sales Ilooms. and leave the public to find out their virtues in their own way. H\ this straight forward course they are now manuiaeturing about lour hundred per dav, and at that rate, even, are unable to supply the demand.
