THE LATE PRESIDENT SALNAVE Salvain Salnave, who was executed at I’ort-au-Priuee on the 10th inst., was a native ol the City of Cape Haytien, where tic was born in the year 1832. He entered the army as a common soldier, and grad ually rose to the position of Captain of Cavalry ot“the North, which position he retained after the establishment of the Em pire under Soulouque, although he held republican principles. When on the morn ing of Dec. 22, 1808, Geffrard raised, in the name of the people, the standard of revolt, and declared for a Republic, the Imperial Guard were at once mustered to quell what was deemed a mad enterprise. Owing to the influence of Salnave the whole North rallied to the cause of Geff rard, and finally the Empire was over thrown ami a Republic established. Gcfl rard. being a vain, ambitious man, used little discretion in rewarding those who espoused his cause, and, among others, conferred the title of Major in the army upon Salnave, to whose bravery, energy, and persistency, he actually owed his high position. Soon there came another call for his services. Spain, having taken ad vantage of the civil war in this country, sent a strong force, and declared the an nexation of the Dominican portion of the island, and reestablished it once more as a colony. Salnave entered warmly into the conflict against the invaders, and to his efforts, more than any one person, was due the credit of their expulsion. Feeling aggrieved by the action of President Geff rard in regard to Gen. Oge Longuefosse, he commenced a revolutionary movement which resulted in Geffrard flying from the country in March, 1867, and Salnave be ing proclaimed President. The Republic continued in a disturbed condition, and in November last insurgents in the South pro claimed Gen. Domingue President, and those in the North Gen. Seget. These movements culminated in the recentevents which placed Salnave in the power of his enemies, mainly by the defection of his own forces. In person Salnave was of very commanding presence, about six feet in height, of regular features, large, lus trous eyes, and dark complexion. He re ceived a good education in comparison with those around him, and displayed re markable sagacity ami force of character in his official correspondence. SENSATIONAL JOIBNALI8M. lion. James Brooks of the New York Express, writes the following very truth ful comments upon the duties and respon sibilities of journalists: “It is now nearly thirty-four years since the Express was first published in this city, and our newspaper experience dates some half dozen years beyond that in another field of labor, and if our observation for near forty years is worth anything as journalism, and in a profession in which we have been wholly educated, it is with us a solemn conviction that the entire usefulness of a public journal consists in its scrupulous regard for truth. We do not claim to be exempt from the mis takes and infirmities of other men, and often feel how difficult it is, surrounded by a score and more of assistants and reporters, each with little comparative responsibility, to say and present just what we feel and know to be right. This very difficulty, sometimes amount ing to an impossibility, only adds to the con viction that a public journal has no right to he untruthful, malevolent, personal and sen sational. merely for the advantage of catering to a depraved and degrading public taste and opinion.” LAST SENSATION!
