Probably our commanders are toot busy dispatching rebels to attend to other -dispatches. The men of the New York regiments are now engaged In forwarding their ballots for President and State ticket to their proxies to be by them deposited In the ballot box on the Bth ol November. We have the result in two regiments complete, the 112 th and 189 th, as follows: Lincoln. McClellan. Ssß 9 431 TI The 112 th Theißßib' Total. •Majority. The 112 th regiment voted unanimously for Fenton lor Governor—Seymour not having a “friend” in tLie regiment. The New York fiddles* will roll np lorty or fifty thousand majority for the Union ticket, They are bonndto vote as they shoot, on the side ol their country. f> The Minnesota regiments were voting yesterday. How ardently they love Little Mac the returns elsewhere given abundant ly show, No wonder the Cops do not like our boys In blue. The annual meeting of the Old School Frcebjtuian Synod cfNew York, held in the First Presbyterian Church of Jersey City (Rev. Dr. Imbriete), closed on Thurs day night, The regular services began on Tuesday, and continued for three days. In come respects this was a most extraordinary cession. The General Assembly of the Church held in Newark in May List, was attacked and arraigned lor its loyal resolu tions, by Bev. H. Van Dyse of Brooklyn, Whose resolutions and speech are, we under stand, to be used as a Democratic campaign document. The General Assembly was, however, ably defended by Doctors Krebs, West, Spring. Campbell, luibrie. Smaller, TTarkncss, Stead and others, and the resolu tions of Mr. Van Dyke, which were pro nounced “a fire-brand in the Church, and false and dlslojal,” were condemned by the I Sf nod by a vote of 83 to 15 and S who were I excused from voting. Among the 1 '-at was Bev. Dr. N. L. Bice, formerly of the North Presbyterian Church in this city. It argues an Improvement in discreetness If not in views that he did not give bis voice to the pro clever* tide of the discussion. The funeral of the l»le M>ijrrGeneral Bir pey took place, with much military display, at Philadelphia, on Friday. It Is said that the General almost in the hoar of death dis played his patriotism. In a very Impressive manner. Arriving at Philadelphia on elec tion day, though nearly overcome by the dis ease which toon proved fatal, before allow ing himself to be taken home, he insisted up on being carried to the polls to vote, as a ■citizen, for the cause of which he had fought ns a soldier. Memphis pipers of the 23d say that Forrest Is reported to be concentrating a large force at Jackson, Tenn., and that a con scription is being enforced in the country adjacent to Memphis. CoL Hoge's com mand, defeated at Eittport, Miss., had re lumed to Memphis. It is stated that CoL Doge is not blamed for the disaster, as he t Imply obejed orders. The Cincinnati Gazette of yesterday gives the htme Tote in Ohio for Congressmen, nearly all official, which shows a net Union. majority of 24,765. Fourteen Union Con gressmen were elected on the home vote. The soldiers' vote will elect three others, Searing two for the Democrats to crow over. ’’Tia a pity they have even two. Notwithstanding the man Dodd is safe in Canada, the investigation at Indianapolis is going forward, and will do a vast amount of good in opening the eyes of loyal men to the dangerous plots of our home traitors. Oar Indianapolis dispatch contains a fresh instal ment oi .this evidence against the Northern Allies of Jolt Davis. This perjured wretch Dodd is a devout believer in Little Mac, and helped to nominate him la this city. Bead hie record, 'and from one learn i-U. Loyalty is an empty phrase with these men. or rath, cr it is not empty because it is the cloak to deadly designs against all we hold dear as a people. The assassin and his dagger appear when the stolen garb Is torn away. The dead bodies of Major Wilson, 3d Mis souri Militia, and six of hie men who were captartd by the rebels at Pilot-Knob, and given up to a gnrrilla band for execution for the alledged killing of some rebels in Arkansas, lost summer, wercf-iaud In Frank yin county, Missouri, on Moud»y. Wilson’s body bad several ballet holes in it. A rebel Major and six privates are no wla Alton -prison as hostages for Wilson. He and his men will doubtless he shot In retaliation for this barbarous act. Our Indianapolis letter gives us General Hovey’s recent order to the done of Liberty in which will everywhere be treated -by that organization with profound respect, whether they like it or no. This fastening rebels and rebel sympathizers in front of the train is a good thing. Their friends will un derstand that it Is necessary to hold Are. PBITirE BANKING, In our city column it will be seen that aosue attention is paid to the mysteries and miseries of private banking, as illustn-ted In recent failures in this city. Our impulse "3s to sympathise with the principal sufferers, rnd these we do not deem the bankers them selves, but these who have lost by trusting their funds to them. Exposing will do good jn such instances. It should entail some re sponsibility to be a banker, or hank director. The recent occurrences in this city, Which show the evils of the opposite system, cannot be too fully dwelt upon, especially at a time when it Is attempted to patch up a rotten concern to run a little longer, in tbe hope of getting trough new deposits to reduce the present disastrous general average. A, bank whose forlorn list ol assets looks like a rat's nest, •cannot too soon wind up and disappear from the list We arc sorry for the depositors, but the general business public should be protected from a scheme to carry present losses oyer to a new list ol victims. JdbCE CATON AGAIN. Judge Caton Is evidently uneasy lu his jnlnd. lt Is a healthy sign in so chronic a •PARA as we know hie to be. The tingling eeneatlou Is a token of returning life In his political principles, which for years past have about as much vitality as one ot his own telegraph poles. The Judge has always, in politics, stood precisely where he was stuck, to cony a Southern wire. But his own shadow has scared him at last The r »cent report of bis Ottawa speech In our columns, end subsequently reiterated and vouched for by our. reporter, has set Judge Catou to work overhauling his budget and sewing up the rips lulls covering. He now sends us by telegraph the third revised edi lion of his views, which’ he deems It neces sary to express “without using the word* Slavery or Aotl-SlaVerj" Luckily, the evooiiynm “AboUtloli” teems to have stood frim to pretty good stead, and tie word C-.i VOL. xvm. “Negro” lies to come in at least once In this abstract a hand-breafh long. So that Judge Caton’s Copperhead listeners did not suffer from lack of their usual suite nafcce on such occasions. It is evident tbit Judge Caton means to be very cautions in tbc use'ol language jest about now. It is even more evident that be needs to be, if he would pass for a loyal man, in full sympathy with the war. “Out of tbe abundance of the heut tbc month apcakcih.” Copoer fountains will betray their contents if the slightest vent is given. SNAirCOIKG TIOTOBV FROUTHfi JAWS OF HfcFBlT, We h r ve published fragmentary and ab breviated account* of Gen. Sheridan’s great victory at Cedar Creek on the lOih insk, but this morning we insert a graphic detailed description of how “victory tvaa snatched from the jaws ol defeat” on that eventful ‘day by tbe will and genius of one mao. It was tbe most remarkable engagement of the war.. Indeed, modem history famishes no parallel to it. Some writers draw a compari son between Sheridan sod the French Mar shal Defeats, who saved Napoleon from rout anddeetructlos at Marengo. Bnt there is no parallel in tbe two battles. Beesatx came upon the field with a reinforcement of 10,000 veterans; he found Napoleon whipped and his tom and disordered- columns retreating before the victorious Austrians. He hurled his fresh troops upon the exultant foe, broke tbc Austrian line, and converted a bad defeat into a crushing victory. But Sheridan brought from Winchester no corps dermte behind whom his broken and scattered regi ments could rally and form. But he cid bring wbat was worth more—“ the brains of a General and the heart of a hero.” It was the magnetism of his own presence that stopped tbe flight of his soldiers. He rode down the lines mlth hit In hand, from right to left, calling on his men to re-form, and which they obeyed with alacrity, cheering their beloved commander to the echo. Be soon put a new lace on affairs; the advance of the rebels was speedily checked; a grand charge of the whole force was ordered, cav alry on tte wings, infantry and artillery in the center, and glorious Phil.' Sheridan at the head ol the whole. The bugles sounded the charge, and forwaid went that liae of glltteriog bayonets and uplifted swords. The rush was resistless; tte “gray backs” broke in dismay and fled Id contusion, with the Federal cavalry slashing at their backs. The victory was complete. The fruits were 60 pieces of artillery, 13 battle flags, S,OOO killed and wounded, and 7,000 prisoners. Is not Gen. Grant right in declaring that “Sheridan Is one of the ablest generals.” Bnt the battle of Cedar Creek is not tbe first instance where Sheridan has rallied a broken and retreating column. He exhibited the came magnetic power over his men on two farmer occasions* A cotemporaxy re calls the fact that “he commanded a divis ion in General McCook's corps at tbe battle of Stone Elver; McCook’s corps, our readers will remember, was on the right, and was exuaebed up on the first d»y. Sheridan’s di vision of that corps was rallied by hla exer tions and a large part of it went through the whole three daya of the battle, while the other two divisions never fetopped till they got to Nashville, It was the same at Chick amauga. ilcCcok’s corps was broken, and only cue of Its divisions was kept together. That cue, of course, was Phil Sheridan’s.” TflE ffIARKETS TESTER DA Y-A Panic. These who bet against Uncle Sam had a sorry time of it yesterday. Gold rose in the early part of the day to2lß>f, and in the ai tcrno'B suddenly dropped to 213. This state of. afisin produced a reaction in the wheat market. Before ’Change hours, No. 2 spring wheat rose to $1.73 per bushel, but in the afternoon o panic took place, and It fell to $lO3, at which price It closed—a decline of 10c pi r bushel within eight hours. tST~ There is ranch «ald relative to “Sons of Libert?” and other orders 41 Lottie to the sovetn. menu” It may ormayvotbe true thil they exist bn% la* ary ca»c. »U hlftory shows that secret aol Utica* orgoziizatlosa only flourish where the ad. mtoiftratlun of the government-isa despotism.— Btcuh Tima. [Special Di-patch to the Chicago Tribune.] St. Lome, Tuesday, Oct. 23. It is believed that Price's army bos escaped. The fight on Sunday, south of Kansas City, w&s designed to give time to the wagons in advance to get a good start. There la no continuation at headquarters, ol Pleasanton's capture ol three guns at Independence or routing of the rebels on Sunday, as tele graphed from Kansas City. _ Guerillas are reported near Warrensburg, though that place Is now held by a garrison commanded by CoL Moore, of the S3d Illinois. Col. G. Harry Stone arrived in this city this morning, with tbe papers, &c., found on the body ol Major Wilson, who was mur dered by tbe rebels, after he was taken prisoner by them at the battle of Pilot Knob. The papers, which consist of orders Irom Gen. Esine, telegraph dispatches and private letters, were banded over to General Ewing, and are now in his possession. No doubt, therefore, remains as to the terrible futt ol the gallant Major WiL-on. It appeared that he was shot through the body several times, but the papers In his possession leli undisturbed. The bodies of six men who were captured with Major Wilson, were also found at the same time The hostages held tor Wilson at Alton will probably be shot on' Mu-day. We learn that three companies of the 11th Missouri regiment, stationed at Washington mutinied. Lonis. The reasons alleged were various, Among others, that the 7th regiment had been sent home and they were entitled n like privilege: that General Pike was a rebel, «fcc. As there were no other troops at Washington Col. Stone was pow erless to quell the .mutiny, and seemingly acquiesced to the proposition of the muti neers to return to Bt. Louis. He according' ly procured as extra train and they started for St. Louis. Immediately after their de parture, however, CoL Stone telegraphed to tbe military authorities at Franklin, and on arrival at that station, they were all marched' to the guard house. They numbered in all about two hundred and twenty, and by their inconsiderate action, will probably be com pelled to serve another month, either on the tortiflcatiocs or In military prison. St, Lons, October 25.—A dispatch from Washington, Mo., says the dead bodies ot Major Wilson, of the 3d Missouri militia, and six oi his men, captured by tbe rebels at Pilot Knob, have been found In the woods In Franklin county. Major Wilson was shot through tbe body several times. He was identified by papers found on his body, and there seems to bo no. doubt that he and his men w ere murdered by their captors. When it was ascertained that these men had been turned over to a band of guerillas to be exe cuted, the Provost Marshal ot this Depart ment, by order of Gen. Rosecrans, sent a rebel M jor and sis privates In irons to Al'on, tu be held until the fate of Major Wilson 6honld.be known. When it is d-rfi, nluly learned that Wilson and his men'were tilled by the rebels, these Confederate hos- taces will be shot in retaliation.. When the rebels leit Richmond, Ray county, they carried away aboutslo, ooo worth ot goods stolen from stores there. A Chattanooga correspondent of the Jour not, Oct ibtb, says; 'Where Hood will stand is a matter of sap position only; but-the collection of large supplies fit Talladega, Ala., would give tbe Impression that he *UI plant himself on the Macon and Montgomery Rrilway, near the Chattahoochee, to contest Sherman’s ad vance on Montgomery ana Mobile. He stated that in the speech referred to he had avoided tbe use of tbe words slave, slavery or slave holder, knowing bow liable he was to be misunderstood by ‘some who were particu larly susceptible on; the subject of the ne gro. What he did say was this: That admit ting that tbe Democratic party was en tirely governed- by -political policy Ir respective of all the considerations of patriotism, still the world .had tbe surest guarantee that the Democrats could never consent to a dismemberment of tbs Union. A dissolution of the Union once effected, aid the Democrats ot the North would be left at the mercy of the Republicans. Where as, if peace were established with a pre served Union, the people of the South would more naturally affiliate with the Northern Democrats, rather than with the Republi cans of the North. He had further said that the same political considerations influencing the Rcpnblican party, would lead them to prefer a dismemberment of the Union, un less they could first abolltionlze the South. The War Democrats have arisen; The effort to save the name and fame of the Dem? ocralic party of the days of Jackson is about to be made. It is decreed that it shall not be dissociated from all that is patriotic and .manly. Hence a Convention of “all the Democratic faith*’ is called at the Cooper Institute, New Tort, for Tuesday. Novem ber Ist, to consider the proper course to pursue in the present exigencies of public aliblis, and of preserving the honor and In tegrity of our. country. The names identi fies with the call for this convention are of leading Dtmocrata in all the loyal States of the Union. The first meeting will be at twelve o'clock, noon, and after the organi zation, the convention will proceed to dis cuss the issues of the day. In the evening. Francis B. Cotting, will preside. Maj.Gen. John A. Dix, will read an address to the De mocracy ot the Union, and speeches will-be made by the Hon. Ed wards Pierrepoint, Son. Henry G, Stebblns, and other eminent men. We knew that the miserable Copperhead faction which raised Us voice against the nation, and which adopted the treasonable platform at the Chicago Convention, was not the Democratic party, and here comes the testimony from Democrats themselves —long tried Democrats at that. The men who are engoged in this movement are not old politics! hacks wfco have ‘gravitated to Copptrheadiem, but veterans In the Demo-, cratic faith, men who believe m the princi ple and practice of True Democracy—who oesfre that the Democratic party shall be Democratic in practice as well as in name— and above all that in the hour of our coun try's trial it shall be true to freedom, to the Constitution, the laws and the Union. The names of the gentlemen engaged in this movement are such as to command re spect. and we extract them from the calk Dtmocrata from all parts of the Union are It-vited to attend the Convention. P. [Special Corremondence of the Chicago Tribune.] 7 XNCSXSTXB, Scott Co Oct. 23,156 L THE MASS MEETING Wilch came off at this place on lost Thurs day, Is point of numbers and personnel, was a grand alia if. Notwithstanding the inclem* eccy of the weather, the irrepressible crino line v tre out in unrivalled loveliness and Eurpaesicg^numbers. To the patriot heartit was a scene well calculated to inspire emo tions of the loftiest enthusiasm and pride, as an evidence of the moral and patriotic ener gy of this country—as another proof of that wondtrinl courage and fortitude of onr peo ple, who, inthe midet of a long, bloody and protracted civil war, the mostteirible the world has ever seen, nave shown themselves superior to every adversity and danger, and who ate now gathering themselveshp fer one last great effort to crush out armed treason at the South, and to overawe, cverwhelmand forever eilence moral treason at the North. .Price, To a. spectator witnessing this large living panorama; the serges ol life that tilled the public square, aid radiated outward in every direction through the principal streets; theiong processions of men armed with banners, and coaming ladies and sweet little girls decked In tbe glorious tri colored emblem of their country’s honor and majesty, it would have been a very pardona ble stretch of Lis imagination if for the once he had forgotten where he was, and imagin ed himself suddenly transported; into the center of the intelligent unlveres; and that somehow the men and angels had got mixed up together in promiscuous concourse, and were celebrating some grand festival.ln which both and all of them had some com mon and absorbing interests. And his im agination in many respects would not have gone far wrong. But to return to dry facts and figures. It yras a big thing—the biggest that ever took place in Winchester. It was a giant that could have put the two previous mass meet* lugs here of the Peace Sneaks and Copper heads into Us two breeches pockets, aod then had plenty ol room in its capacious coat tail for the next one. It was big enough to make the knees of Copperheads smite together like the lordly Befatuzrer when he saw the handwriting on the wall, or like the L haughty Macbeth when he saw ‘‘Blmam wood jnorch down to Dan slcare," on the shoulders of the sturdy. Scots, who were marching down to over whelm him and his fool conspiracy. To attempt to speak of the innumerable .banners, devices and mottoes that enlivened the precessions, would be preposterous. It was literally Ixmrured all ever. It was filled with devices, mottoes, and sentiments, the natural and spontaneous outgushlngs of the popular and patriotic-heart iu response to the utterances cf treason and trakors In oar midst. But cannot help noticing the car which was filled up with the little girls all dressed In the national colors. They looked like a white cloud of jourg angels. The procession' of biantlfal and Bewitching young iadies who represented the States, and who, despite the ruin, were out in* fall regalia, presented u display cf artistic taste creditable to their patriotic heads and hearts. The immense crowd at the grove was ad dressed by Col. For, of Jacksonville, with happy effect. At night, notwithstanding the rain, there was a splendid display of fire works. Major Knapp made an able address to the crowd in ILc Court HouseT He was followed by another speaker who addressed the meet* leg until the magnificent torchlight proces* e!on moved oil down the street,-when there was a general rush made to look at that. .Altogether the day was a grand success, and will tell heavily on the resnlt in No vember. Judge Norton at Naperville* (Editors of the Chicago Tribune.] The Hon. Jesse O. Norton, of Joliet, spoke betc re our Union club at Naperville last evening, to a very large audience, in Union Hall. r T 1 The Judge has many very.w&ra Mends in this county, in both partis*, and a| very re spectable number of the Democracy of this place were present to bear him. The JudgeVspcech was a most telling one. It was eloquent, argumentative, convincing, and beyond contradiction. He said that he should not undertake to prove that the rebels commenced this rebellion by firing the flrst gun at Fort Sumter. But the origin of this rcbilllon date further back in the history of onr country. That there had been but four acquitltione of territory to this Government since the time of its formation. That these acquisitions had been brought about by the slave Slates forthe sole object of establish ing, ixtenolng and perfecting slavery there in: That in no instance, until Kansas was admitted, had th(re been a free State admit ted Into the Union, hot the slave States required the- admission of a slave State which had always been‘done. Thdr object was to keep the balance of Sower in their hands. In Congress. The udge then examined the Chicago platform, and found In it nothing but rotten plank, that would bllstertbefeet of any patriot who stepped upon it. He then turned bis atten tion to old Buchanan’s Administration and policy. Andif the old man could have hoard ibis part of the Judge’s argument, ho would have derived but very little satisfaction for bis imbecile and traitorous conduct. The Judge then remarked, you have observed l have said nothing about McClellan.. Indeed. I do dot know as I could say anything about him. Ido not think anything could.be said about him one way or the other. We have Lad a good many converts to the Ur lon party In our county, and still they are erzniog. World.] HranQUABTaES Army or the Shenandoah, I .OctoberT9, ISM. j Jnst before daj break this morning, Early began hla movement. An impenetrable fog enveloped the whole region, favoring his designs. The three Divisions with which he began his assault, and which were massed at the point on our left before alluded, to, tbe previous night, were disencumbered of every accoutrement except their arms and ammu nition.; The men were not oven permitted to carry their canteens, lest clinking should advise ws of their approach!: .Just as the first gleam of day began to mingle with the dim moonlight, the advance of Lee’s Di vision was preceded and covered by aa unim portant and feint attack on bur extreme right. As this attack began, the sentinels of the enemy, along our whole front, fired sig nal muskets fx om right to left. Immediately aiterwurfi the three rebel Divisions, under Fegram, Ramstur, and Gordon, advanced in scud columns without and as saulted Geu. Crook’s position m front and flank. Tbe warning given by our pickets was not, it seemed, timely enough to secure an adequate manning of tbe breastworks. The result was that the reoela, firing rapid and terrific volley sot musketry, swept over tbe work* almost without opposition. Geu. Crook’s whole line gradually giving Way, the artillery In the breastworks (two batteries, B, First Pennsylvania, D, Filth regular,) was so posted that it Was next to impossicle to prevent its capture. By su perhuman efforts all tne guns but one of bat tery D were got away, Tho remaining gun, together with battery B. First Pennsylvania, cmlie—seven guns in all—lell into the.bonds o! tie enemy. .The latter came trooping on like so many devils, yelling and keeping no an unduninisbedfire of musketry, which con fused Gin. Crock's soldiers still more, and gave them little or no opportunity to form and meet the onset. The fog was a disad vantage which placed both officers and men in the predicament of not kno wing, where to turn in making a combined resistance to tae assault. Nearly all the encampments of the command were overrun by the enemy, num ber>|of our soldiers being taken prisoners while not yet arisen from slumber. Shelter 'tents'were .in some instances palled from soldiers' lying In their blankets. Toe camp equipage in great part became the spoil of the foe. General Crook and his. division commanders did their best, under the cir cumstances, to meet the shock, and con stantly opposed* half organized front against the enuny. The latter, pushingj up beyond and around our left,’ entered the camps of the provisional division under Col. Kiichln, routing it also, ana driving those and Geu. Crook’s troops on toward me pike.
